I'll never forget when my brother first played FFXIII. His wife came in and asked him what he was doing:
    "Playing Final Fantasy XIII."
"Oh, really? I could have sworn you were watching a movie."
That pretty much explains it right there.

    FFXIII Problems (with Solutions)
Linearity: discourages exploration and deviation from the set path, but linearity can work in entire games/specific levels where the story has a sense of urgency and the mechanics are fun and addictive enough that you don’t mind just going in one direction (see ff7r). The hallways we run through should've been booty-smacking us with lore (and a safe word) and secrets and mysteries, because the longest levels were in places that didn't matter, while the more interesting places lasted 2 seconds. How long did we spend in that junkyard in Cocoon? or the "Ark" which was literally another junkyard full of monsters to make l'cie stronger (I wanted more lore behind that, like there's a history there that living people kind of remember where l'cie trained in dungeons for some reason), or the damn Gapra Whitewood (pointless place, amazing soundtrack), or that mine under Gran Pulse? This wouldn't have felt so bad if we could've gotten more attached to other parts of the setting besides like three places on Pulse that you can revisit. It's the most futuristic setting ever shown in the franchise and I wanted to see more.
Cast: composed mostly of strangers to each other, they lack chemistry from the get go. Conflict amongst the main characters isn’t a bad thing, just look at Barret and Cloud butting heads or even Lulu and Kimahri’s chilly reception to Tidus’s induction into the party, but there has to be something, and the l’cie spend too much time apart in the first half. Cast chemistry isn't about them liking each other, it's about them ****ing each other asdjkfhaksjdgh ok I'm done laughing, but really it's them "verb"ing in some way. If they're strangers, there's no foundation for them to feel anything but annoyance at having been forced around each other! I think Lightning and Sazh should've started off as former comrades (she's the ground trooper and he's the pilot) who were never really friends until she included him on her plan to bust the purge evacuation since they have shared motivations, and also to not make Sazh comic relief. If you start off the game with at least 3 characters already familiar with each other (Lightning, Snow, Sazh) at least there's room there! And Snow needed a whole rewrite from the ground up. I clearly love a lot of Japanese media but some of this characterization needed that primetime Emmy-winning American TV writer touch, a little less cringe and a little more grounding.
Gameplay: Part 2 made the gameplay so much better with the tiniest of changes (changing the party leader during battle, speeding up paradigm shifts, etc.), and the original game actually does have solid game mechanics, if a little sparse (there isn’t a lot of meta for example, I think the only thing I can think of is when you paradigm shift right at the end of a character’s combo animation it resets your ATB gauge to start off full). They also waited too late to give us the whole gameplay, given how little of it is there.
Story: they really didn’t take advantage of one of the most interesting video game settings I’ve seen. Much of the story could’ve been revised to include more perspectives and set pieces that paint a bigger picture of what Cocoon is like. VII, X, and XII at different points of the story give us a main cast who have to lay low from government authorities and still manage to let us explore towns, talk to people, experience the fictional cultures of their worlds. The Cavalry should’ve been introduced in the game sooner, Cid should’ve gotten more development, and we should’ve gotten one city in Cocoon that sheltered the rebellion that would’ve acted as a hub point between Cocoon and Gran Pulse-quite frankly this game’s story feels so much shorter than its predecessors. XII on its own is a pretty long story, easily 60 hours minimum compared to XIII’s 25. All those damn Cieth Stone quests could’ve been missions relayed to the party from the Cavalry in an attempt to figure out their Focus. I could write a revised outline right now but nobody wants to read that lol.
Content: the Cieth Stone missions were really the only content outside the main story, and some were very difficult but also unsatisfying, it’s hard to explain. Given that this is the only game where the fal’cie are omnipresent, it’s a shame we only fight two of them. TWO. First time I played it, I was like “oh maybe it’s because they’re saving some for the sequel” but the end of the game like… cancels fal’cie forever. All of them fall asleep after the first game so we might as well have had opportunities to fight some during the story! A damn shame we literally look at Bismark and instead walk past him. We perform the "Titan trials" and don't fight Titan. Instead, we get one optional super boss, and that's a random Cieth called Wlaudislaus, who has no backstory or explanation of being.
I know, long comment on a 4-year-old video. But I’m making a practice of providing possible solutions whenever I criticize a work to sharpen my own creative skills. And it’s fun af!! And the "New Bodhum -Aggressive Mix-" makes me NUTT, that track is so good. "Will to Fight" is so good. "Dust to Dust"??? "Almighty Bhunivelze"???

Very well done. More people need to actually put effort into their critiques of the game like you do, there's a whole host of things to learn from XIII both good and bad but it all gets lost in the din of people just kinda bandwagon hating on the game and fans feeling the need to just gush uncritically to defend against them, and I applaud your effort. Interesting thing about the Titan Boss idea is that actually was planned but the had difficulty getting it to work due to his size, they actually did eventually implement the idea in 13-2 with that boss who is basically a reskin of Titan, you may recall.

      They explain is pretty well.
Essentially, if you change the future then the past changes so that the future you've now made will happen without time traveling interference.
Basically, by changing the future you create a new timeline where whatever you changed is always what happened. The past is adjusted to make this possible.

    • @Jack_80
      @Jack_80 4 года назад +11

I played this trilogy recently after having put it on hold for the longest time. I didn't regret playing it, I really enjoyed XIII as a stand-alone story and I did like Lightning returns as you would a spin-off to a series you like. As for XIII-2, was the game really necessary in the greater scheme of things? I mean it seems to just have been an explanation for how and why Lightning is the Saviour in the final game.

    • @Jack_80
      @Jack_80 4 года назад +7

xiii-2 was still a really good game though and the ending boss fight and the music during that fight are amazing. lightning returns is my favorite though, i've beaten it like 5 or 6 times and just can't seem to get tired of it. not sure why everyone whines about the time limit, that's one of my favorite parts of the game. they give you more than enough time to do and explore everything. this is why so many modern games feel the same, few want to risk trying something different in fear of the onslaught of whining from modern gamers who want games to hold their hands.

Anirudh Viswanathan though some of the lore IS in the codex, the character arcs and plot all happen within the game itself and are wrapped up within XIII. The only thing out of the left field is them all surviving becoming C'ieth at the end, which XIII-2 (messily) explains. FFXV relies HUGELY on timeskips and fleshes out absolutely NO ONE and NONE of the story unless you pay extra for the DLC (which is still weak and surface-level) and the movie (which is terrible). You can play XIII through and still have a satisfying experience because of the character development and plot actually happening onscreen. It feels finished. They don't skip huge sections of time and development.
Also, the XIII sequels existed to bring Square Enix back into the black after XIV failed catastrophically. XV was then churned out cheaply and shittily with a focus on it looking pretty and appealing to Westerners - and people hate XIII so much that they brainlessly defend XV, which is a hundred times more braindead and weak.

I love XIII, mostly because I liked the story, dont know why. But i skipped playing XIII-2 because of the time travel. Lightning Returns was so satisfying toward the end when I got the extra day and beat the last floor boss and story final boss after multiple tries. I actually read the reason Lightning has all the skimpy outfits was part of a deal with the team that made Lightning Returns and Nomura. Nomura said he would draw all the skimpy outfits for lightning they wanted as long as they didnt move 15 to mobile

I really like defending XIII series because I feel most of the criticism is unfair but let's be honest it was a generation behind. It's the growing pains of company that focused too much on graphics over engaging gameplay, in a time when traditional JRPG combat systems won't work anymore. It would take until LR for them to fix the combat and even then not completely. Of course it doesn't help LR makes very controversial design choices. Mainly clock and end game timers, end game timers are equivalent to permadeath. Very annoying to deal with for most people. But honestly I love end game timers because fuck you if you think the world is gonna wait for you Dragonborn. XIII-2 may end up being everyone's favorite because simply put it is the most polished when it comes to gameplay and even story. Caius, Yeul and Noel are so compelling. But LR on the other hand shows the same problem XIII had troubled development but this time with a shorter time span. They had to make it a semi open world and they had to redo the combat so you don't see much polish with it. Some costumes suck. Sazh's plot thread is surprisingly bare.
But still I liked almost all the gameplay aspects of LR. I liked the extinction number and how it discouraged farming all the time as enemies would drop higher level skills later in the day. I love melding and special abilities from it. I loved the customization though some costumes are big offenders like Amazon, but Sacred Knight and Dark Knight looks so bad ass. It reminded me of why I fell in love with Final Fantasy. I love how there's two sidequest involving the music of XIII and XIII-2, like literally the music of it. That was the fanservice I love. I love how bosses get stronger later in the days. What is this Romancing Saga 2? But in the end I was still disappointed by no party members most of the time. Which btw is why it is called Lighting Returns Final Fantasy XIII just like Crisis Core. Or how a lot of the enemies had to be scaled down in literal size. I wanted to fight a turtle god dammit. I also was disappointed at how none of the DLC bosses made it. But the combat itself was great and I consider that the best FF combat to date. Fuck off XV you're just KHBBS wannabe with barely any hitstun and even then that game wasn't that good. In LR you can juggle dragons and giants. I'm disappointed that SE never visited this again because if anything it's the foundation of a good game. How I wish XIII was the games they would remake into one series.
I understand why a lot won't like it. Scrubs don't like end game timers that's why Dead Rising removed it. It's easily a make or break for some people which is sad because I think it created importance in managing your time and treating time as a precious resource. Some sidequests are also very interesting there's one involving a girl who sells her tears and falls in love with an older man except he's not an older man because they don't age but she has the mind of an adult but she sees him as a child even after all these years. This sounds like it's straight up from a sci fi novel. They do make the premise of a world where nobody ages interesting. They even break the rule once without explaining it to tell a story of two people being separated by time. Oh my god do you know how long I've waited to see lovers separated by the flow of time in a video game. It's not well told, the production values are less than ideal but the idea of being the only one who ages in a world where no one does is intriguing and a great inversion of being the only one who doesn't age.But again I get it, you have to show up four times on consecutive days to pass the Luka quest. Do you know how hard it is for people to show up on time? This isn't a joke. I'm saying it is hard for people to show up on time. Because you have to consciously think about showing up on time there. You have to do a lot of running around for most quests. And I guess perhaps the most damning thing is that you need to do sidequests to get stronger. It makes sidequests more important but you wonder if it was too important and I get what they're going for. It's about Lightning helping people in the world that's not gone to hell but is in limbo. That's why sidequests are important but again. If you are not that type of player, you will hate it. LR just tugged on so many of the right strings in my heart in what I look for in a game like this.
In the end I think we didn't need to have 2 sequels but I'm glad we did get them. It did delay XV but clearly that needed to be delayed. Plus I think LR was a necessary experiment in open world design for XV to happen. And while I'm glad XV is heading in the right direction I can't help but look back at what is being left behind.

the time management was one of my favorite parts of lightning returns. with the chronostasis ability it almost becomes a non issue and by the end of the game you have time to do and explore everything with days left over at the end with nothing to do. i never understood how people made such a big deal about it, it's similar to ocarina of time but better and everyone loved that game. most people just agree with the early popular opinion rather than forming their own opinions. look at comments about this series, watch dogs, or dark souls 2 and most of them sound like they are reading from an identical script. people are so easily influenced by the opinions of others and they don't even realize it. many people would have very different opinions of things if they were unable to view and copy the opinions of others and formed their own opinions absent outside influence. of course they would never admit this because who wants to admit they are so easily manipulated by others.

I loved the FFXIII trilogy. I took the time to platinum all 3 of them. The music was amazing, combat was engaging, and the story was as deep as you wanted it to be, time travel aside. For those that don't understand what I mean, there was an encyclopedia that literally explained everything. Also, to those that complain about that, talk to any Dark Souls fan sometime about this. They'll tell you how a rock, branch, or bloody cloth has a profound impact on the story's lore.
Anyways, the games were great. I've played every Final Fantasy there is and would say the trilogy as a whole ranks in my top 5 (probably 5).

When FF13 came out I literally hated it. Last year I gave the game a chance (I sold my PS3 version of it, but bought it then on Steam again) and I learned to addapt to its new game design. In the end I loved everything about it, which is funny odd, since 6 years ago I couldn't stand it because of the same reasons. However, although the story of FF13-3 was great, especially the ending, I disliked how the gameplay was. It felt like an offline mmo with its sidequest and 'lazy' game-design. Overall I have to say that I love the trilogy as well. Very good games.

i mean i played most of the FF series excluding earlier titles cus i aint got any old consoles so FF7 onwards, but LLR:FFXIII is pretty fun if you just play it, you really dont have to turbo through the whole game despite the time limit. Most side missions actually shows a side of Lightning that we never really see in the previous games, and we can see her humanity side returning to her every time she completes one. But you can still just focus on the main missions and then skip ahead to the end date if that is what you like. In the end, the gameplay can vary depending on how you wish to play.

SuperButterBuns Oh, I didn't say that you did. I'm talking about the people in the comments mostly, especially those who misunderstand the point you made in the video.
I'm not awefully concerned though. Square Enix is a marketing genius, and not many people realise this. Most other companies would have died out following a economic failure that the fabula nova crystallis turned out to be. Yet, SE managed to not only salvage the wreck but also turn it into one of their most potentially profitable investments in the longrun, with merchandise that is still selling well (which includes toys, books, etc.), the games being released on all platforms and generating a tidy profit and even that deal between SE and Luis Vuitton, feat. Lightning.
I swear, FF 15 could just be "Atari ET and the Bubsy trilogy combined" bad and SE would still be able to convince people that it's the second coming of christ...

I think the main issue with 13 (and 15) is that they presented awesome trailers and did not materialize it. Otherwise, if se upfront mentioned that 13 will have a very unconventional type of storytelling, one with the players be as clueless and confused as the characters they play and will run on a linear path just as how the gods designed it, it will not have the same backlash from fans who are used to other ff series.
I think it boils down to se's honesty in trailers and giving certain expectations to players.

      Oh yes.
40 hours into Final Fantasy XIII, you reach Gran Pulse, and the game "opens up". And all of the sidequest become available.
Yes, "sidequest"-- singular. That game has one sidequest: monster hunting. You run around Gran Pulse and talk to cieth stones that tell you to go kill X monster in Y place, which gives you an item and activates the next vending machine which dispenses the next monster.
That is the entirety of Final Fantasy XIII's lone sidequest. Running around on Gran Pulse and killing special monster recolors. Hell, it's not even unique to that game. The whole thing was lifted directly from Final Fantasy XII's Hunts.
Hey, remember when doing sidequests in a Final Fantasy game used to take you to unexplored areas and reveal new information about the the plot and characters?
Or how in Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI, sidequests were a means of filling in gaps and expanding on the story?
      Those were good times...

Most people that actually HATE it, are just nostalgia whores that can't beat the feelings of the first time they played 7 as an edgy pre-teen. I enjoy 13, as it has a pretty decent story (at least the first entry) as long as you're not an idiot that needs everything spelled out in front of you and the combat is pretty good unless you're a moron that only uses auto attack. Yes it had flaws but they're not as bad as people make it out to be. Also the complaints about it being a hall way kill me, remember FFX? Remember how it's just one long road walking you from point A to point B? I sure do and yet nobody has an issue with that. 13 is a good game, now is it a "good Final Fantasy game"? I'm not to sure on that, but had they not put FF in the title and just called it "Fabula Nove Crystallis" everyone would probably be pretty accepting to the game.

The reason why I hated XIII is because IT GAVE ME NO REASON TO CARE. The first 20 hours of the game felt like a conversation that I had just walked in on halfway through. Why should I care about saving Cocoon when Cocoon is not fleshed out in any way as to incentivize me to do so? Why am I fighting off this evil authority and what exactly are they doing that makes them so "evil"? The motivations of both the heroes and the villains were never clear to me until at least halfway through the narrative, at which point I was thoroughly bored and frustrated because how can I be entertained when I am given no reason to be invested? (Yes, I know that there's a "grimoire" in the game that gradually explains things to you if you take the time to read it, but that is OBJECTIVELY bad storytelling for a visual medium. You're supposed to write exposition into the pacing and narrative; not hand the audience a glossary when they walk into the theatre.)
The whole narrative fell even further apart when I finally figured out what was going on however, as so much of the contrivances simply do not make sense when you start to think about them. Why is the Sanctum purging entire cities just to eliminate the few people who have become l'Cie when they could easily just round everyone up and identify them by the l'Cie brands on their bodies? Why does Lightning only use her Gravity manipulation powers twice in the entire game? Why are they even necessary when characters are repeatedly shown to be capable of surviving falls and crashes from incredible heights (except for Hope's mom, because reasons)? How does Sazh survive a supposed gunshot wound to the head? How is being permanently frozen in crystal stasis any better than being turned into a robot zombie? Why are Lightning and everyone else still trying to kill Barthandalus when in fact that's exactly what he wants in order to destroy Cocoon? I know that they needed to do so to save themselves from becoming C'ieth, but why didn't they plan ahead so as to ensure that Cocoon will be saved before going to killing Barthandalus? Why does the game never explicitly state that the Fal'Cie are only branding humans simply because they hate them and want them to suffer? Without the game bothering to simply say "because he's a dick", Barthandalus' plan comes across as thoroughly pointless and nonsensical.
Don't get me wrong. I can see why some consider the story of XIII to be interesting, and there IS potential within it, but the execution is terrible in terms of pacing and most importantly, exposition. According to developer interviews, the game suffered from a troubled production with one of the main problems being the lack of a coherent vision, and it shows. Unlike say, FFVIII, FFXIII's story lacks a basic OVERARCHING premise for all of the more complicated details to REVOLVE AROUND. Because of this, my first impression of the game was thoroughly terrible, and I was not invested in the slightest. You have to know the entire story beforehand and play through the game a second time just to be able to enjoy it, which should never be the case with ANY medium.

While I agree on some accounts a few of your questions are answered in-game?
*Why is the Sanctum purging entire cities just to eliminate the few people who have become l'Cie when they could easily just round everyone up and identify them by the l'Cie brands on their bodies?* -- It is explained by some characters a number of times, that merely being _near_ those "affected" by Pulse, or being in close proximity to anything Pulse-related, automatically makes them "contaminated" and they must be purged from Cocoon_ .
*How does Sazh survive a supposed gunshot wound to the head?*
Shown in a flashback: turns out, Sazh couldn't go through with it, and pointed the gun upward just before he fired. So, he missed.
*Why does the game never explicitly state that the Fal'Cie are only branding humans simply because they hate them and want them to suffer?* -- Err...they _don't_ hate them. Their whole intention was to take care of humanity for as long as needed, and then, one day, find the perfect tools to fulfill the one desire Fal'Cie cannot do themselves: summon the Maker, which in turn, would require the deaths of millions to enact.
So yeah, while it is ultimately for mass homicide, Fal'Cie never actually hated them.
Otherwise, agreed: the sequels sucked and ruined the first game in every way, reviving old storylines and effectively making the first game obsolete.

The most damning part of the Final Fantasy XIII storyline to me was... none of it felt *real*. None of the characters acted like real human beings, the world didn't feel like a real place that could really exist. The sci-fi designs clashed with common sense. Plot elements would get introduced, and my mind immediately went, "Boy! That's sure convenient for the plot." The characters never grow or change as people, even across games. Seriously, each character has the exact same motivation across the three games. The whole thing just feels like a masterclass on "how not to write a story 101".

I mean, isn't that most FF games anyway? Don't get me wrong, I adore the FF universe but I think the appeal of FF lies within the philosophical concepts and conflicts within the stories and the aesthetics not necessarily the characters perse. Besides real people don't have "character arches" or "character motivations" so it's a bit weird to demand characters to "act like humans would". People are difficult and messy and non-liniar, characters aren't.

The biggest problems with the XIII franchise (specifically XIII and XIII-2 since I never played LR) is that the "gameplay" requires almost NO player input.
The reason you don't want to play the third game is why I don't want to play ANY of them.
The soundtracks sound like Sonic OST mixed with telephone hold music. So, not good for Final Fantasy.

I consider the decision to make it a trilogy to be a mistake because it didn't need to be a trilogy. As for the first game, which I have played, I consider it to be disappointing. The graphics were nice, the music was pleasant, and the concept for the story (characters forced to act out a task given to them by god) is intriguing. but I couldn't stand the characters, the combat bored me, and the fact that the main antagonist could be stopped by the characters not doing anything. also the argument "it gets good 20 hours in" isn't a positive thing in my book.

It was a neccessary painful evolution for Square Enix. In the same way we have a God of War 2018 reboot, we have a FF7 remake (reboot) and an also amazing Resident Evil 2 remake. These games couldn't have happened without the problems and in some cases failures of their predecessors. So while FF13 was not what we originally expected, things like the stagger guage were essential for FF7's insane combat engine.

I disagree with most of the outrage directed at XIII. The original game at least, the sequels I totally get but the first game is breathtaking. The story is epic and the characters are so grounded in reality that these seem like real breathing HUMANS rather than pretty pixels on a screen. The combat is super strategic in nature and just pressing x with no gameplan WILL kill you.
The linearity is an interesting topic. though. It doesn't bother me at ALL because You actually do get to experience so much of the world. The group splits itself up quite a few times throughout the story so you get to see pretty much every major area of cocoon through the eyes of certain characters. The actual walkable area's may be pretty straightforward but it's no different than a huge overworld just without airshipping over huge stretches of NOTHING EXPLORABLE like in a lot of other FF games.
Like I said, the sequels are a different story but the original game is something special and truly an experience. I can't wrap my head around the response to it.

+guitarheroziplock I agree with you. Once you get past the linear aspects of the game, it really is an overall beautiful game. The characters actually have more to them than just being fighters, the stories and them being so different from one another makes the game more fun to enjoy. Plus, when you begin to get to the sidequest stuff in chapter 11 you can see how it becomes a little less linear in nature because you do have to travel for mission marks. I would have died a million more times than I already did if I just button mashed xD

I will have to greatly disagree with almost all your points. Story is epic? more like epic confusing, the story made no sense at all, and almost all the characters were either boring or just god damn annoying (Hope, Snow, Vanille) and real humans? Like the annoying type?
What world? ts just hallways that looked pretty and you can't do nothing at all, not even minigames or sidequest (and don't tell me about chapter 11, you have to get to hours of nothing to get to that part of the game). Least in past games the world is huge and there's actually a lot of secrets for you to discover, and its a change of pace instead of going into a straight line.

Diego Alegre Annoying? So what? Most humans are annoying. Confusing if you don't read the datalog, FF X was extremely linear and is praized to this day.All FF dungeons are linear with maybe the exception of FF 12. FF 13 is an amazing game with beatiful locations, awesome battle system (even better later on the game with harder enemies) , realistic characters, fantastic story if you take the time and use your brain to understand and heartwarming soundtrack. I've finished it twice and got all achievements.

I like the FF13 trilogy and not just because of Lightning's butt. I also like Vanille's butt. Nah but seriously, I have a love/hate relationship with FF games. I never liked the "wait till the gauge gets full before making a move" mechanic. It just felt dumb to me at the time because i always thought that if I had a weapon I should be able to use it freely or at least dodge or move. This was waay before I became a dedicated gamer. I decided to give FF13 a chance, yes mainly because Lightning is just...perfect. Her bitchy but caring attitude, her badass fighting skills, her beautifully sculpted bo...er, point is, I'm enjoying the gameplay and the story. FF13( i'm not done with the first one BTW, and i've yet to try the other two.) is one of the few rpgs where I don't hate any of the characters and progression feels alright, I haven't had the need to grind or anything. It just continues to impress me. I get the hate. Its not classic FF or whatever. So its fine if people don't like these games but they're not bad games at all. Here, the FF13 trilogy is the equivalent of Resident Evil 4,5,and 6. People don't like them because of the characters or gameplay is different but they're fun as heck to play.

It's weird. I loved the shit out of XIII (still do) and was hyped for the sequel, but XIII-2 was so messy and different tone-wise that I felt really let down on my first playthrough. Then LR turned out even MORE different. Although I did enjoy playing both XIII-2 and LR, in retrospect there was absolutely no need for THESE sequels cause they ruined the ending and the original mood of XIII by shoehorning time-travel, new mythology, "savior" stuff, and other contrivances that shouldn't have been there. XV looks like a better sequel to XIII than its actual sequels.

13s combat lacked identity, it felt so homogeneous, everyone could do everything, nothing had an impact, look at ff7 for example, you cast ultima and it burst your ear drums, it hit you like a brick, now look at 13 the spells just happily float through the air and land with a puff

    • @HyouVizer

      "everyone could do everything"
FF10 & FF12 had the same issue with that too, i mean each character would start off in a different spot of the skill tree but really it boiled down to having OP clones of party members for the best synergy build........
as for FF7 honestly the only thing that made any of the character unique battle wise were their Limit Breaks, as all them could use the same materia/spells to change their stats as see fit
so three other FF games right there that lack character battle identity

The plot of XIII-3 can be explained thusly: Lightning takes a 500 year nap and wakes up to find out she only has two weeks to save the entire world so she decides to kill god instead.

    I like the soundtrack.
I like most of the characters (except Hope).
    I like the themes.
    I hated the combat.
I hated the not-actually-a-spheregrid upgrade system.
I hate time management in general (unless it's done really well-see Persona 4).

Just played this year and I loved ff13. I didn’t mind the linearity because it was convenient for me who had to work a job and I tend to prefer narrative over gameplay. It’s why I mostly skipped over x-2 because I hate pet farming shticks(though I did watch the cutscenes)

Well to be fair Lightning was just a nickname and not her real name. Her real name is Claire Farron. Also there are people with the names Hope and Snow in the real world. I will give you Fang though, it is a weird name, especially for a girl.

    • @itsgray4210
      @itsgray4210 8 лет назад +1

I know about her real name. Who doesn't, really? And yes there are Snows and Hopes irl but do Square really have to dump every simple name in a game? They can at least derive em like how they did with Vanille.
But Fang, yeah. Pretty blunt name.It is simply and object, that's what bothers me.
I don't think it's weird for it to be a girl's name. It could be a unisex name. Like Flynn, Dylan, Sam, Alex.

I agree, because I think the character design (when it comes to their look) is terrible. It's the first FF game where the protagonist makes me want to cry. That's not a good sign, however, the game will still be great, I am sure.

i'm just glad i held onto my ps3 and still have all 3 games. despite all the hate they get i find myself coming back to them more than most games. with all the hate they got i wouldn't get your hopes up for a remaster. honestly they ruined every ff remaster they've done for me. ffx remake they changed the shape of the faces for the worse and i had audio glitches with speech cutting out pretty frequently. ffxii was one of my favorites because of how challenging it was and in zodiac age they took it from hard mode to very easy with no option to play the game at the original difficulty. 2 games i liked a lot and couldn't even bring myself to play the remasters they've ruined them so bad. i never played the remasters for 8 & 9 but i hear they made some stupid pointless changes for the worse in those as well. i'll just stick to the originals because these guys can't even make a remaster as good as the original was imo.

me too. yeah i missed the large world map to explore from the ps1 ffs but it was amazing in different ways. i had way more fun with the xiii trilogy than i did with 10. 10 was nearly as linear as xiii yet nobody whined about that for some reason. xiii had way better voice acting and the story and characters kept me far more interested than in 10. i swear the majority of people have a hive mind and just latch onto popular opinion. watch 10 reviews of these games and it'll sound like at least 9 of those reviewers are reading from an identical script rather than forming their own opinions. of course multiple people could come to some of the same opinions but when they all have an identical list of flaws from top to bottom, that's no coincidence.

The only real prominent problem is that the game is so *pushy.* That's what gets it from being "meh" to being hated. Like, Lightning was pushed *so hard*- they wanted her to be another Cloud, and they made her the most importantest and premier figure in all of Final Fantasy ever.

The worst of it is SE trying to make everybody accept Lightning. They keep shoving her on the spinoff games like she was a great character. Dissidia 012 she is put as the main of the second wave of characters and on FFBE we had 3 FFXIII events already. They also made her very strong on FFBE to make everybody want her.

  • @A203D

As far as I can see FF13's linearity was not the problem. The problem was the story, the characters and the wishy washy plot direction. All of games before FF11 were generally linear RPGs, and they were all wonderful in their own ways. The linearity never hurt those games. FF13's linearity could have been a great asset had the gameplay been much better:
    1. Why the hell have we got non-random battles. FF12 was a semi open world RPG, hence it makes sense that enemies populate the field. Theres no need to transition to a seperate battle screen because we have enough space and the gameplay functions by felling enemy after enemy after enemy.
FF13 is a linear dungeon with enemies you see in the field view. Whats the point? We know we have to engage these enemies to level up and enjoy the battles. Whats the point of populating enemies on a linear field if we know we have to fight them anyway.
    2. The battle system is below average. Its not an action RPG its not a turn based RPG. Even if you take out autobattle you still have a system where you set the Paradigm and the computer selects what it will do without your input. Thats what made the game so boring, you were removed from selecting atacks, relegated to watching chatacters perform attacks you would have selected.
Final Fantasy needs to slow down the battle system, it dosen't need to play like your watching Advent Children. It needs to slow down so the player isn't relegated to watching the game play itself from the sidelines. This is why I feel the series has waned of late. FF13 had some good moments, but it became a banality to play a game where you run through hallways and watch the AI defeat enemies with minimal input. Depsite that I still think it was an okay game but could've been so much more had Sqaure got it right.

FF13 part 1 was an outstanding game. Once you fully understand the paradigm system you really get to appreciate it. I just don't understand why it was necessary to add a part 2 and 3. There was never a need for it really. The story just got beyond confusing. I agree that it was all about square trying to milk this story which I don't think really worked in their favor. It's like a good TV series that goes to shit but they keep adding to it. Just finish it while you're ahead like breaking bad did!

"The existence of the sequels wasn't from a place of ambition but from a company milking a game to death".
The XIII series is one of the best examples of a series born out of sheer ambition and indulgence. Some people may not have liked it and you can tell some of the design choices they've made were influenced by feedback but all 3 games showcased a team trying to do its own thing and nothing more. You can tell they had their vision and stuck to it despite Square Enix cutting the budget significantly with each entry. You really can't say this is corporate garbage because the corporate side of this never worked outside Japan, unlike virtually every other entry in the franchise.
If anything, they could've made a whole separate series with the XIII universe, given its expansive lore.

I enjoyed the XIII series, but let's be real: it's flawed. So much so that it for the most part it counters what was good about it. When I get down to it, it's biggest flaw is just how egotistical the attitude behind it was. Motomu Toriyama pretty much masterminded this series, and I promise you, almost every bad decision related to it can be traced back to him in some way. Proof? He also handled X-2.
Unnecessary blaming aside, I agree this series should not be dismissed. This is especially true if you consider it a mistake. At the very least, Square can't afford to; doing so would mean the same thing as not learning for their mistakes. Therefore, they won't t be forgetting about it any time soon. That in turn means that we'll definitely be seeing references to this series every now and again , so good luck forgetting about it.
But the XIII series does have it's strong points, including its music, and these strong points should be acknowledged when they arise. Trust me; it makes swallowing the series that much eadier.
