That's great to hear. Ff13 is one, if not the most divisive game in the franchise. It's a love or hate game.
Im on the love side. Not my fave, but i still like the game as a whole. What's funny is that almost all of the things people hate abt the game is what i loved abt it. The confusion at the start, the bombardment of info and terms, even the linearity of the maps.

This video is great. I actually restarted the trilogy earlier this week and I’m still progressing through XIII. This game was actually my entry Final Fantasy title and I actually didn’t like it. I moved on years just disliking it until I picked it up years after a few titles. I played it, then went on to XIII-2 (my favorite) and the third. I ended up actually enjoying it and appreciating the game way more. It has a great soundtrack, great character design, and a beautiful environment. It’s underrated and I wish more fans would pay attention to the game and see the good rather than the bad. For a game that released 12 years ago, it still holds up amazingly well. The same applies to XIII-2 and Lightning Returns. Got my fingers crossed for a hopeful re-release of the 3 in future consoles.

I really enjoy linear games nowadays because if well done those games feel more focused & on the ball in terms of action and pacing. Alot of open world games have an open world just for the sake of bragging about it rather than actually having an open world that feels alive & with a purpose. I don't care about walking around a huge open world that has nothing to do in it except for a bunch of pointless & grindy fetch/loot battle quests.
A focused story oriented linear game keeps you properly engaged & excited about the game.

Creaty. While I enjoy choice-based games like Mass Effect and open-world games like Skyrim on occasion, I too find it relaxing when a game is just trying to tell you a linear story rather then make you get lost in its world. I love FF13's story and how it gradually unfolds over time; contrast that with games like Skyrim where you're just running around like a chicken with its head cut off and by the time you complete a mission you've picked up a dozen more and got sidetracked so many times you've probably forgotten what it was all about, so the impact is totally lost. FF13 has a great story and it's visually the most beautiful game I've ever laid eyes on.

      @japanorbust 3 года назад +44

I feel like a lot of people who hate on this game don't realize that many of the characters' main traits are MEANT to be unlikable at first. Snow is a douchey wannabe hero whose blind optimism gets people killed. Lightning is a cold jerk who thinks she can handle everything without anyone's help and that nothing is her fault. Vanille is annoyingly cloying and coy. Hope is emo, whiny, annoying, weak and psycho, wanting to murder Snow.
But that's just the setup. Snow eventually realizes his heroism lacked proper planning and got people killed. Lightning eventually realizes she is shutting everyone out that she's trying to help and that she needs their help as much, and that a lot of the situation is her fault. It's eventually revealed that Vanille's bubbly personality was a ruse to throw people off of who she really is and the "sins" she is guilty of. She confesses it and stops lying to everyone. Hope eventually realizes he was consumed by his trauma, fear, and hatred and grows past it. These characters are intricately crafted. Even Sahz and Fang have their big "reveal" moments, despite those are the two I'd say are fairly likable personalities from the start. They all change and grow together, and help each other through their weaknesses and toxic personality paradigms. It's very inspiring and I feel like if more people understood it, and how closely it resembles how a lot of real people are, they'd appreciate how much real-world meaning the game's story has.

Hes loud, obnoxious, and stupid but his actions and rationale make sense. He has a job to do, protect the princess. His animosity toward Zidane is 100% justified. He cant just let this horned up monkey boy kidnap Garnet. It doesnt even matter that she wants to be kidnapped, shes the princess. She cant just run off on her own, shes putting herself in danger and hes doing his job to try to get her back to Alexandria. Then of course, things change and he develops as a character. @@deity4919 For most FF games difficulty is going to vary greatly from person to person because of different builds and how much grinding one decides to do. The reason why 13 is one of the ones with a better difficulty curve is because the linearity and level gating prevents people from breaking the game in half with power grinding and stat manipulation like in a lot of the other games. So while not a hard game it has an actual difficulty curve, whereas the other games are typically only hard at the beginning and then the stat manipulation mechanics kick in and allow people to break the game which usually results in a sort of reverse difficulty curve, hardest at the start but gets easier as it goes on. My first FF was 6 BTW.

@@deity4919 Well yeah but that's the decisive majority of the playerbase that doesn't go for those, ergo when talking about difficulty curves superbosses and the like are usually excluded because they are supposed to be difficulty spikes distinct from the curve of the main story. I think completionists make up about 1 in 5 players at the best of times and even out of that it's an even smaller minority that actually see it through/pull it off, most stop partway through attempting to complete most games so the real number is significantly lower.

Thank you. This was my first FF that I played all the way to completion by myself. It had always surprised me and made me sad to hear how little people liked it, considering the place it holds in my heart. Ironically a lot of what some OG rpg fans dislike about 13, were some of the same things that felt so inviting to me. I'm the type to get overwhelmed by having too much to explore, and the complexity and sheer number of terms never felt out of place t me because I had a ton of fun reading the datalogs, it felt like I got to experience the world through that, which catered to me very well (whereas how you mentioned, its more traditional to do that by interacting with NPCs). Obviously that's just an opinion, but the loneliness f the world also felt right in this game, since our party was a bunch of loners put together by accident, who simultaneously became symbols of fear and hate. (Again, its definitely feasible to say, "well not everyone knew they were l'cie", but I think it matches the tone is all). And I couldn't agree more with you about the battle system. I know it gets a lot of flack for the heavy emphasis on "auto" since you control one character and even that control is generally defaulted to "auto", but the boss fights just gave me chills from adrenaline every time, especially on repeat play throughs were I specifically level less and less pushing the limits. I appreciate you balancing mentioning the faults of the game with the things you enjoyed about it, that is something that not a lot of people who talk about it do. I could talk about this game for forever probably, so I'll leave it there, but once again, thank you for appreciating FF13.

Final Fantasy XIII is simply beautiful. You can tell they spent a lot of effort/budget on this game, everything but maybe the gameplay itself. It would've been an amazing movie.
I love the characters and designs (especially Lightning in this first game). Beautiful characters, CGs, and graphics for its time. An actually interesting and beautiful environments (specifically Cocoon). Beautiful trailer (definitely watch the trailers) with a song I still listen to. And ofc a beautiful soundtrack. And most importantly a beautiful Final Fantasy world and story full of lore, with a beautiful ending.
I admit, I didn't play all of it but I did watch the whole trilogy like long movies. Especially enjoyed the first game's story because of the story and the interesting setting of Cocoon. I actually really like how linear the game is, as well as the fact that there aren't any classic towns, I think it really plays into the themes of the game, the path is linear because the characters feel like they are being forced down a path that they can't escape, no matter what they try, and the level design reflects this. It's the same with no traditional towns or npc interactions, as you yourself said "anything or anyone is your enemy." This means no towns would take you in, and no npc's would want to interact with you. The game forces you to feel lonely, because the characters themselves are alone against cacoon.

I do like both games, but you have to see them on a whole. Ff10 told its story directly, ff13 almost requires reading datalogs to fully grasp. Ff10s cast is made to be lovable, ff13 is to be flawed. Ff10 had overall more content, while ff13 had its missions and that's about it. (I will say though, FF13-2 is WAY better than ff10-2 IMHO. ff13 is one of my favorite games. i loved the atmosphere every local has, never felt like i was playing a boring location. the enemies were varied and had nice designs. The Music is god-tier!!!!! and the characters are nice imo. It took me several playthroughs to understand everything and feel for the story but was able to follow it pretty easily. The combat was a big change for me since i had only played ff10 before this game but in short time i found myself speedrunning battles once i knew how to use paradigms better. the crystarium allows an open exploration of skills and strengths, granted in the late game it allows it. The summons are for sure a let down in terms of combat ability, they're not super powerful but i do love the story-line battles involving them and making them a trial for each character to defeat to continue in their story. The story is mostly linear and the last parts of the game where it opens up in pulse are more for xp, character growth, and to lengthen the game time.
The form of upgrading gear was ok but in late game it got terrible, takes hours to get enough gil to get materials for gear, and then you'll have to grind for more gear. So i think that needed a more open system and a more forgiving gil system. But MY biggest issue is what many agree with, the linear storyline and environments. After many many times i have played this game and the more times i will play in the future i can't stop thinking of what it would be like if each chapter had a expanded location, where you can do to multiple places, explore way more, maybe find lore information that way, special enemies or items etc... Even use a larger map to help explore each character's qualities and how they feel. I think it was limited because of the game's size. i had it on xbox 360 and it has 3 cds meaning it was too much to fit on one disc i think. ps3 had it on one but i'm not sure what to make of that. If they did a remaster of the game the creators needs to 100% revamp the maps to allow for exploration, give a more human side of things in terms of enemies, fix the equipment leveling up mechanic, free up the crystarium for all players more early on. But keep the glorious soundtrack and visuals, honestly that is what makes me come back so often, i can't get enough of looking at the game and listening to it all.
    yeah i love this game😂

As an adult, I recently also revisited it and yeah there were some odd parts here and there but overall I thought it was a very fun game to play. The combat system was a lot of fun and I actually grew to love all the characters over time. So I would say it is def a good FF that doesnt deserve all the hate it gets.

This was the first FF game I played through to the end. Some comments:
    - The lore is amazing even though you have to go through the text boxes (dislike how they did that but it's fascinating to read)
    - I kinda liked how each new battle with minions felt like a challenge. I've never encountered normal enemy encounters that kicked my ass as hard as these ones in a JRPG before.
    - it's a game that has a lot of amazing and interesting concepts but they're not executed that well at times or told through an accessible way that didn't rely on the player doing most of the leg work.
    Lastly, Fang and Lighting...bruh 😍

I loved jumping between them to keep raging on the game. And the lines of snow and Vanille are failures in translation. And of all the soundtracks, I think this was the best. Any time I heard someone complain about how linear this game is, I always would approach them with "Gee, you must have hated FFX then huh?" Oh, it was one of your favorites? That's weird, it's equally as linear, so you are just letting other peoples opinions cloud your judgement. Either way, nice video.

    • @PacketWrangler
      @PacketWrangler 3 года назад +7

Now it sounds like you're letting other people's justifications leak in to what you're saying because I hear that a lot. Final Fantasy X had environments that were larger and well-designed. It had towns to visit and branching paths to explore. The storytelling was also much more fluid, so it was easier to care about the characters. Final Fantasy XIII isn't just linear; it plays like a hallway simulator. I'm fine with linear, but make the environments more interesting and give me characters to care about.

    • @VAlucard46
      @VAlucard46 3 года назад +14

@@PacketWrangler Not really, outside of the Sunken Cave which housed Yojimbo at the end, it was just as equally a "hallway simulator". Yes, FFX had towns to visit, but their only purpose (which isn't a bad thing, and may be what people feel was missing from FFXIII) was to further the story and confuse the player over if the Summoner's Pilgrimage is a good thing or a bad thing.
The main difference with FFXIII however that people seem to forget when mentioning the lack of towns is, for the entirety of the game, the party as a whole are wanted fugitives. It only makes sense to avoid places where people gather in massive numbers, even more so with their faces plastered everywhere. The few times that they do wind up going into a town (or amusement park) it doesn't pan out very well for the would be heroes.
Also, saying that the environments weren't interesting is disingenuous. Most of the environments were stunning to look around and at times even gave me shivers at the amount of detail put into them. Though I suppose if you played it like a "hallway simulator" and only kept the camera facing forward, I see how you could come to that conclusion.

@Rich1285 you are just the type of player that @VAlucard46 was referring lol. FFX is as a hallway as xiii. Even FF7R is as a hallway as XIII.
Also, saying that the XIII environments are not interested... that's a blatant lie. Bersha lake or the archylte steppe is amazing and astonishing. Also, there is a bit of emergent narrative, things that you can learn about the world only by looking at the environment.
I'm not saying that you must like XIII only because I like it. The opposite, your enjoyment shouldn't be directed by anyone. But, I mean, you shouldn't use the same argument that you read/heard on webs or RUclips videos without giving a try, you know? Sometimes, and this is one, things are exaggerated or are direct lies. Clickbait and stuff exists.

@@xxjlgmgljxx "you are just the type of player that @VAlucard46 was referring lol. FFX is as a hallway as xiii. Even FF7R is as a hallway as XIII."
      No.
It's important to move the discussion not on the concept of linearity, but on level-design, which is where FFXIII is dramatically inferior to both FFX and FFVIIR. @Rich1285 is absolutely correct when talking about design and all one has to do is to put a map of something like the Mi'ihen Highroad, arguably one of the most straight-forward locations in FFX, and put that same map next to just about any location in FFXIII and the differences are about as dramatic as it gets. Again: Were talking about level-design. It's the illusion of exploration. For example, in the game Half-life you are essentially going from point A to point B, but you don't have that sense of linearity.
Why? Because of verticality. Because of area's that are made to give cosmetically the illusion of space. The addition of side-paths. Area's that require mechanics. General push and pull sequences. That Mi'ihen Highroad has a Chocobo you can ride, another path with items that are completely separate, a side-boss you can engage that has story significance later.
Final Fantasy XIII has a road. Or a corridor. Or enemies.
They look fantastic. The art direction is on point, but these areas are never given the time for exploration or interactivity like FFX or FFVIIR. It's not just a lack of mini-games, or side-paths, side-quests, towns, or NPCs. It's the combination of all that, *on-top* of a world that wont let you have the time of day to interact with it, so you can experience it and understand it with story direction that's more complex from "RUN THROUGH HERE". On the most basic level it's a pacing problem. It also affects the core story that the other games don't have.
Like, let's look at the most obvious homage FFXIII has to FFVII. FFXIII like FFVII opens without context with a high action sequence that both using trains just for the fun of it. In FFVII and FFVIIR, the characters talk to each-other and while you're doing the bombing mission so you can learn the context of the world and story while accomplishing your mission. The objective, the context of the world and the story are on the same path. You are learning about the world and the plight though the act of what you're doing. Furthermore, the reactor is a series of corridors, a train station that requires you to go up a flight of stairs, and outside warehouse to finally the catwalks of the reactor itself. *Verticality*.
FFXIII has, a highway and tries to do storytelling of the situation between Sahz and Lightning before jumping around to Hope, and then Snow. It's a bit all over-the-place. You're directions are never defined outside of "Run this way" or "We gotta save those people!" Why? Who are these people? Where is the story sequence or gameplay beat where we get to learn this.
If we flip the script, if FFVIIR was designed the same way as FFXIII: It might not have had the train ride after the bombing mission. Or the extended time in 7th Heaven to interact with the characters to learn about stuff like what Solider exactly is, or why Shinra sucks, how the society functions and people general motivations. Or the two side-dungeons that showcase the need for the neighborhood watch. These all stack-up, and without the pacing, and the gameplay to facilitate those story beats, most of FFXIII's very important world building is regulated to an encyclopedia.
Now the defense of this is that the story cant compensate for you to breathe it all-in. That you're constantly on the run. And that- is correct... In that you being on the run is what the story is about.
But that's not an excuse that we can't explain things or interact with the world. FFVI had whole sequences, like FFXIII, that you were on the run. You even had the party split-up like the beginning of XIII. And yet why did not it require an encyclopedia to explain who the Returners are? There's even moments in FFXIII where you're clearly not on the run, and you get small snippets of how the world functions but it's just not enough. At some-point you have to acknowledge that the combination of the pacing, the level design, the writing, there's too many problematic elements that other entries of the series simply don't have.
Or have a bit of, and I'm looking at you FFXV.
I don't say all of this entirely out of spite. Own the soundtrack. Got the PS3 and 360 versions with a Platinum trophy and all-the-gamerscore. Actually love the characters and I wish XIII's combat would be given another chance with a game that was better designed, written and paced...
...A game like FFX and FFVIIR.

@@nickblomgren Well thought out and well worded, I don't think I have an argument to any point you made here. Namely because as you stated, the level design was lacking in FFXIII. My opinion sits at FFX most definitely had better level design (if you ignore the cloisters lol), but FFXIII had better environments. FFX was more engaging, FFXIII did a better job at showing the size and beauty of the world. I think I even agree with what you are saying about pacing. I think if they would have inserted a few "let's make camp here" sections to dive a bit deeper into character development, it would have gone a long way to better story telling in general.

I call it the "Final Fantasy Cycle". Zelda also seems to go through a similar cycle, but less severe. It all started with FF8, but I think it really became prevalent with FFX. X was met with a lot of praise about the graphics but tons of criticism of the voice acting, the linearity, and the cast. When XII was released, a lot of the flaws of X were overlooked and people lauded it as one of the best in the series. XII was the new ire of the community. Everyone hated the DTB, the new battle system, which essentially melds turned-based and action into one. Everyone hated the political nature of the game and called it "boring". Then XIII was released. Suddenly, everyone loved XII and hated XIII for its new battle system, linearity, and cast. When XV was released, suddenly everyone loves XIII now and doesn't "understand the hate," yet they are quick to criticize XV. It's just the FF Cycle. XV will be remembered fondly once XVI gets released, and XVI will be the new target of undue vitriol. Mark my words.

Right. I think now, and after more years XIII will look positively in the eyes of the public. Just like VIII and XII.
Its weird, i remember the hate tbh, but I really liked the characters, just didnt like the how linear it was and how difficult it got. Now that I am older, I enjoy str8 forward games more and games tend to be easier than difficult. So if I replay this, I would probably feel more positives.
Whats crazy is that despite this game not being one of my favorites. I still remember all the boss fights I fought, the soundtrack, the trainers, names of everything basically, and the polarizing battle system. Like despite the controversy, this game definitely made a mark on the FF fans.
I think this game will see a very positive light on a remaster ala Zodiac age. And I will be right there to buy it!

FFXIII released on my birthday and was also my very first FF. I love everything about it, even the linear aspect of it because I'm trying to fight in battles and witness a story; Not get lost wandering all the time. I highly enjoy the characters with my favorites being Vanille, Sahz, and Snow. I love that Vanille is a kind and cheery girl who's actually doing everything she can not to have a breakdown, Sahz is a wise man who cares for his son while being the voice of reason (and comic relief sometimes), and Snow's overwhelming optimism and positivity despite everything making his life a literal living hell. I know much of the fanbase dislikes XIII but i feel XIII is where the new generation started in the series (like how Persona 5 brought in alot of new people for example). This game is dear to my heart and remains my favorite FF game to this day.

I loved this game so so much when I was a teen. I replayed it during the pandemic and it blew me out of the water again. The characters, the voice acting? Just so damn grand. Up to this day there is no game for me that managed to make me care of six people so immensely. Never understood why this game got so much hate or was considered a 'failure' even? Sure it has its flaws but come on

theres a lot of reasons the game was hated back then, but tbh i remember the release as a huge ff fan, and the fact that actually most main characters are girls played a part of it. It just didnt "fit" the aesthetic most ff fans liked, and if you top about the expectations, people litterally didnt even give it a chance. The game was linear and everyone was expecting a gigantic open world, but im almost positive it would have gotten a better reception without a main strong girl cast (all the male characters are somewhat secondary and only the girls have a significant role in the story), which says a lot about society back then. I believe thats why they did the complete opposite with ffxv. The game aged incredibly well tho and feels actually very fresh today, while ffxv boys band aesthetic feels so cringe imo.

I've played almost every single Final Fantasy game, dating back to the original on the 8 bit NES system, I played it in 1987 - yeah I am old. Of course everybody remembers the big ones, FF2 (US), FF3 (US), and then we were swept away by FF7, and I think FF10 was pure magic and the best turn based battle system in the series. All of that being said, FF13 was an amazing game! I feel sorry for the fans who let this one slip by either because of negative reviews, or just a quick sample of the game and then decided to turn it off (I admit I did that with FF15). The characters, music, battles, hard to kill bosses, all make FF13 one of the best adventures. Is it linear? Sure, but who cares? The battle system took a lot of heat from folks, but it really shines when you have played through and learn the roles/paradigm possibilities! I place FF13 up there with FF7, FF10, and Chrono Trigger as top RPGs.

But it was far too linear though. I hope it gets a remaster where they add more complexity to the map as well as more to do in the gameplay loop. It would go a long way to making this more of a masterpiece. It's a great game in some important ways!

I haven't played this game in years, but I loved it enough to platinum it twice. I agree with most everything you said. The excess of information in the first half led to a confusing story and the paradigm system that I skipped over learning bit me about half way through. However, after restarting the game and really learning what it was all about it really is a great story (though a lot of dialog in the first 2/3 of the game is super cheesy). The linearity didn't bother me and it opens up after chapter 9. Once you really learn the battle system you can basically wipe the floor with EVERY enemy in the game. The soundtrack is one of my favorites of all time. The levels design is creative, vast and colorful. The characters develop slowly, which I love, but like you said sometimes parts of the game can be just following a long path and clearing enemies which can be draining.

What does anyone else think? Any way having a cracking good day! Chow man! love your vid
