Do you think you'll make a video about FF X? Perhaps X-2 as well? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. I, for one, never got into X-2. The contrast was too jarring back then, Yuna's 180 degree character shift didn't fit, and then there's the uhm... odd parts about the game. Like certain scenes with Leblanc (?), Brother's attitude towards Yuna.
Anyway, good work on these videos so far

I just replayed this game last year and having played it when it came out and a few times after it still was a different experience. It actually hit harder and i found myself getting quite emotional several times. Some nostalgia, but mostly just witnessing it with more life experience. It's a thing that actually gets better with age. Everyone should play this game.

Maybe we just disagree on what we consider backstory for a character but Vincent does get some character growth and his own side quest. You have to stumble on it but you eventually find Lucrecia's cave and you not only find out who vincent was but what drives him in optional cut scenes. Its also how you get his ultimate weapon (or LB not sure which). Most importantly you find out why he feels he needs punished

I really disagree with how you dislike the world map. That is one of the best aspects of older final fantasies. It really gives you the scale of the world. Newer titles like FF 15 and 13 and even 10 really don't give the same feeling.

Great video Prez, going through the OG for the first time recently was an amazing journey. The music, characters and story distracts from any graphical issues. It is absolutely worth the time and money to play through this game at least once ans I highly suggest people do play it if they haven't. Very excited to see part 2 and 3 of the remake, and especially excited to play Crisis Core later this year.

I played the game for the first time in 2021, so I didn't have nostalgia going for me. But I found the outdated graphics and art style charming in its own way. I imagined myself in the shoes of some kid in 1997 with a PS1 & how they would've seen it. I did use a guide (thankfully spoiler-free) to tell me how to get the powerful materia and items, and even though there was A LOT of grinding, I didn't mind. The music in the game was great, and that really helps offset the mundane grindy feelings. I got the platinum on my first playthrough, so unfortunately I can't bring myself to replay it since my mind's like "You already beat this, go play something else"

Yes, a resounding yes. I played parts of this game throughout my life, but only in 2020 at the height of the pandemic did I boot up the game and play it from start to finish. It was easy to see what countless JRPG were inspired by, and the struggles the characters went through enraptured me and distracted me from the world's mess. It's not perfect but is a watershed game that solidified its place in gaming history.

Nothing visually wrong with this game, it looks fantastic for the hardware it’s running on. So sick of people saying a game looks bad because it’s old. This game has more life in it than most “realistic” looking games today, that’s not nostalgia it’s good game design.

I’ve beat the OG FF7 about once a year since it came out in 1997. The game’s depth, its difficulty to get a perfect game, and the story still entertain me so thoroughly, and in a way no modern game can. Call it nostalgia; I call it one of the best games ever made.

I’ve replayed this game so many times. The longest I went without playing it was probably 10 years, but after I found the Xbox port I’ve played it once a year. The 3 times animation help so much with text and navigating from place to place. And the remake seems like its owning the retelling of the story with the whispers and it feels more impactful knowing what is meant to be happening vs the updated events

I played it last year and it must not be my style of game or I'm just nitpicky, because it was hit or miss for me.
I used a guide for some parts and don't think I be able to find my way around some places if I hadn't accidentally turned on the red arrows where doors are. I don't know how I turned those on. There's a bunch of little minigames that you only need to do once, which is a bit odd. The submarine part took me 15 seconds because I just drove forward mashing fire. I never bothered getting Vincent because I don't know how anyone would find him without a guide. I looked up where to find the combination to the safe, and the internet would only give me the combination, not how to figure it out. Storywise, going into Cloud's head was very strange and I don't know how [insert 2 player characters] survived their mortal wounds at [insert location in the past]. It also felt a bit weird when you're searching for a man in a black coat and then start pretending to be a soldier, playing games at the Gold Saucer, etc. I thought, "Don't we have something important to do?" Also, I managed to miss all of the materia that lets you get enemy skills, so the guide wasn't too helpful near the end.
For good parts, The animations on the overworld characters is really great, especially for Aerith. Cloud's overall story, while told in a broken-up way, is really interesting for a protagonist once you get the whole story. The music is, of course, quite good and Aerith is a sweetie. Yuffie is fun, too, but I wouldn't have been able to recruit her without the guide.

If you're someone who didn't grow up playing videogames in the 90's, you can still find things about it that you enjoy and appreciate even if the gameplay doesn't feel as fun or as engaging, and it being from the 90's makes it feel like a lot of necessary elements to a video game are missing.
Also, you'd need to be able to tolerate "grinding" experience points and materia AP, and doing lots of unguided exploring unless you have a strategy guide.
Overall, I'd recommend that someone play the Remake before playing the original. And that's coming from someone who loved the original when it was brand new. It's just a much smoother introduction to the ideas and themes found within the "Compilation of FF7" as it's referred to.

I played the original game like 4 times throughout my life - first when I was a kid, honestly, the story was too complex for my wee brain to understand but the game was still fun so I was able to finish it but forgot most if not all of what happened. Second was after I watched advent children, after watching the movie I thought Cloud was soo cool vs Sephiroth, and with the omnislash finale to boot. I just had to replay the original again, now with a more mature mind to understand context lol! A few years later Crisis core came out on the PSP, and after I played it… again I go back to the original with even MORE context (this time I went in with completionist mindset).
Years later, my life had moved on, lots of other games in between…then out of nowhere FF7 remake was announced, and I shit-you -not I bawled my eyes out. I played the game with reverence and it easily became THE Game of the year - nay - century for me. The 4th time was after the FF7 Rebirth showcase, it was just for refreshing my memory with the story beats and all that. One thing is for sure, i am definitely hyped for the FF7 re:trilogy and I will hold it close to my heart for all my life, I want my children and my children’s children to experience it!

In order to milk a franchise the games have to be mediocre to low quality surviving only on the legacy of the franchise. If the games are good then the games are good and you literally cannot milk a franchise as long as you're putting out quality content...

It was literally the perfect jrpg. I would pause the game just so I could look at the instruction manual because of all the quality that was put just into the booklet...
They just don't make games with this kind of overall quality in terms of the packaging, the CD layout with the artwork behind each disc, along with the quality in the booklet and the quality of the game itself...

I think the overworld is one of the most epic parts of the game, and still my favorite overworld, several JRPGs down the line. It's designed sort of like Breath of the Wild's open world, the terrain sort of corrals you to the next story point, but you see various points of interest in the distance, except you can't go there immediately in FF7 like you can in BOTW, so when you finally get there, you feel hyped to be there.

I actually begun with Final fantasy with this game some months ago on a laptop. It has terrible design mistakes like the criptic progression, missable content and the superbosses that only reward you for using a guide and break the immersion. But I was surprised by the quality of everything from the beggining, the ost, the fleshed out battle system and the story and characters. The more I remeber the experience, the more I can talk about it. It is a time capsule and definitely made me a fan.

    The Game.
I would also mention that there is a way to make this game much more accessable for modern gamer by using MODS for PC/Steam version. Ofc I would not call it 'true original experience' but these mods allows for many improvements that wont intervine into story or even gameplay.
Aside form that I consider even the normal FF7 very playable nowdays until gamer is aware of it's origins and time it was made.
Very early 3D, 1st FF to use prerender backgrounds, 1st to use 3D in general. World and characters that you wont find anywere except FF series.
Story, characters and it's vibe in general are still to this day huge adavantages that may overshadow even modern games/stories.
I envy anyone who is able to overcome old for today standards visuals and just try this game for fitst time.
Absolutly timeless experience that is a highlight for milions of gamers in their gaming adventure.

I LOVED FFVIIR, it's the only FF I've beaten besides X.
I played a lot of the original FFVII, but I always lose interest around the 35 hour mark. It's always been on my bucket list, especially since I want to compare it to the future Remake games, but I don't have the willpower. In fact, despite playing many FF games, I always lose interest towards the end.

This time though, I bought durning the Steam sale. I modded it just a little to clean up the images. It looks pretty good for a ps1 game.

I just beat it in 2023 and I don’t regret it. As a kid I’d watched my brother play but was too young to comprehend what was going on as I was like 5yrs old. I decided to play this before the remake because I wanted to play it through the eyes of my older brother. And completing it makes me feel so proud to have played his favorite game. I’m amazed by the amount of heart and dedication that was put into making this game. There’s so much charm, emotion, and I can genuinely say this is one of the best games I have ever played in my life. I’m so happy to have played this version. Yea the new one has voice acting, but reading the text in this version allowed me to really connect and think with my mind as if I was really with the characters. The 2d background with 3d characters was a site to look at and when playing it. Gorgeous looking game. I think of how technology is now with modern graphics, but the effort and artwork that went into this with the music and story is just unbelievable to me. To think someone could make such a masterpiece just makes me happy. And for anyone who has played or yet to play, I just would like to say you will not be disappointed! This version over the remake and I have yet to play the remake. This game came out in 1997 and there will be nothing ever like this!

Nice take on things. The other benefit is you can now comprehend the „remake“ actually being a time travel sequel and the term „remake“ is a narrative subtitle :) and the OG FFVII being canon with its story getting remade in a new timeline. Have fun with rebirth! Looking forward to it myself.

I loved Don mansion, the golden saucer and chocobo breeding, the cosmo canyon scenes, the forgotten city, chasing and defeating weapons and the characters storylines overall is brilliant. I was also obsessed with this game from 1997 - 1999. I was 11 yrs old when it first came out. I still remember the story, graphics, mature themes etc. made a huge impression that has never been surpassed for me. I didnt have internet at the time, so being stuck for days or weeks was no exception. The massive scope of the game was unlike anything I had ever seen. It made Zelda: OOT seem so childish and short to me. FF8 was such a massive disappointment that it made me turn away from the franchise. Havent played FF7 ever since the old days.

I remember watching my older brother as a youngster in 2004 play this from beginning to end, and marveling at it. It was my introduction in to the FF universe and I've played every single one since (except the MMOs...).
I recently played the original for the first time myself during COVID lockdown on our still functioning PS1, and I think you hit the nail on the head in this video. I remember spending an hour playing with my materia late game and actually just thoroughly enjoying it, the battles are just well-paced enough to not be a slog (the theme is my ringtone), and the story is probably my second favorite in the series (FF6 takes the cake, honestly). This is the game that made me not only a FF fanboy, but a Square/Square Enix fanboy. It holds a special place in my heart, as probably with most people who have played it.
If you have the time, please do pick it up and enjoy the journey. It's so worth it.

I'm not much of a gamer, but a friend told me about FF7 about a month ago and that got me hooked on the series. I watched someone's playthrough of the remake first because I was afraid I didn't have the reflexes to play. I'm so used to Pokemon mechanics, where I take things slow and methodical. I loved what I saw from Remake and I didn't want to wait around with Rebirth, so I decided to play the original about a week ago...its an experience. I have a few qualms with it; most of which are the "mini-games" that feel less like minigames and more like chores such as the button sync or the big jump (which I'm stuck at the moment) I feel like Remake did a better job with that mechanic as the minigames actually are minigames. But yeah, I'm really playing for the story because I really wanna know what happens.
