@@PerspectivEs Born in 97', as someone who listened to Duran Duran at least once a day in my existence, this i probably a top 15 song from them imo at least
I love the contrast between Warren’s edgy guitar and Nick’s melodic keyboard part. It gives your senses a beak while still being in the song. Great era for Duran Duran that kept them relevant and gave them much needed momentum. Thank You album is a treasure!
Thanks - I was thinking that the guitar on this song sounds so different (more complex and more of a rock sound, as opposed to pop) from their earlier hits. I didn’t realize Andy Taylor quit and they brought in a new guitarist!
History has not been kind to Duran Duran for covering this song, but I always thought the criticism has been unfair. It was a respectful cover with the participation of the original artist and a good version at that. I dug it then and do now.
It seems a poor choice for a British white band to cover this song...until you look into some Behind the Music stuff and realize how much damage cocaine did to them; almost wrecking the band, almost killing the members (J Taylor in particular). So finding the biggest "F*** You, cocaine!" song possible and covering it makes sense.
The whole Thank You album/CD was brilliant due to the fact that each cover was not just Duran Duran doing a cover but actually seeking inclusion of the original artist to sanction or collaborate. This is just one example of the greatness of this often overlooked Fab Five from England. In this case GrandMaster Melle Mel lent his impeccable voice, and they did it again with the "911 is a Joke" cover from Public Enemy, and Perfect Day from Led Zeppelin. All done with grace, style and respect for the original melodies and lyrics.
@ Thanks Garrett. The boys did a great job on that track didn't they? Great example when a band has fun. (Wait til they hear my cover ..lol) They and few other have inspired me over the years. The 2 unrelated Taylor's John (bass) Roger (drums) were heavily into jazz/soul music a lot of Motown, they've worked with Nile Rogers on and off for decades, mixed with the glam new wave David Bowie, Joy Division. Wow, I didn’t know Duran2 did a version of “White Lines”. (How did I miss this?) GMF & MM harmonizing w/SLB, even the video looks fresh & supercool today. Both bands exploded onto the scene around '83, so it's like an anthem to the decade's music & excess. If you ca get past their past perceived cheesiness you will hear some damn good music.
Hip Hop, Rock (Warren, John) Nick sinths atmosphere, always 80's Simon voice... just, an amazing song! 👍✨
Love the collab - its an epic song and Duran Duran just went off. Melle & Furious Five still killing it.
A magnificent cover ; not surprising 'cause it's Duran !
Saw them in concert last year and they did this song and it was EPIC!!
Duran Duran, still my all time favorite band!
one of my favorite DD songs ever! I really cant wait to hear it live again on May 14th! 😍
When that synth line comes in at 4:30... *goosebumps*
THANK YOU DD for this masterpiece (pun intended)
GREAT version. Actually made the original a million times better.
Didn't like it back then
Now
I greatly respect them
4 covering this!
I had no idea this existed but I am SO glad it does!
I just found this recently too! Love it!❤
What a good version it is!!🎉
An improvement even.
It's only because the original is EPIC that this is even worth 5 minutes of our time. Shows you that fame and drugs actually DO go to your head!
I absolutely love this ! Duran Duran is at the top of music with this song! ❤
hello, how are you doing it is nice meeting you here.
This song is better than the original
😂
Maybe so...
Saw them tonight when this came on the house was rocking!
This album was great, the critics were ignorant to tear it up like they did back then. These guys worked their asses off to make good albums in a time where most of the bands from the 80's were calling it a day and grunge was the thing.
I went to the paper gods tour and saw them in Brighton..they did this live....FABULOUS!!!!!!
(Also listen to Liquid Liquid "Cavern", the original, for that ethereal, funky, haunting, trippy sound of the LES NYC scene of the early '80s).
I didn't know either! Saw the documentary in the theater last evening. Boy they jammed to this tune!!! Funky!!!
One of the best covers ever!
Duran Duran, rocks!
This just shows that once again that are way ahead of their time. Damn, John's dancing is different, but soooo hot 👍
That's how you make a proper cover version ❤
One of the greatest British bands that were unfortunately so underrated. Their music is eternal.
Duran Duran "underrated?" Could you be more musically illiterate?
