Lyrics:
Only came outside to watch the nightfall with the rain
I heard you making patterns rhyme
Like some new romantic looking for the TV sound
You'll see I'm right some other time
Look now, look all around, there's no sign of life
Voices, another sound, can you hear me now?
This is planet earth you're looking at planet earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop this is planet earth
My head is stuck on something precious, let me know
If you're coming down to land
Is there anybody out there trying to get through?
My eyes are so cloudy I can't see you
Look now, look all around
There's no sign of life
Voices, another sound
Can you hear me now?
This is planet earth, you're looking at planet earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop this is planet earth
Look now, look all around
There's no sign of life
Voices, another sound
Can you hear me now?
This is planet earth, you're looking at planet earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop this is planet earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop calling planet earth
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop looking at planet earth

1981...
2024...
Planet Earth is absolutely a different place to what it was when this song came out.
Let this track be the eternal, anthemic tribute to way, way, WAY better times!
😂
When we were merely destroying the Earth. Now it's nearly there.

@@Robil63 You said it, my friend!
No it wasn't a better time. 80s fucking sucked.
As a black teen growing up in South Los Angeles I could not let my friends know that I was an admirer of Duran Duran. Also, how they inspired me to study the keyboards AND bass guitar.
You probably were pressured to only like Eazy E and Ll Cool J. I bet you those dudes listened to Duran Duran themselves.
B.I.S.O.N.: BRISTOL SCREENWRITER NONSTUDENT Same too brother I love of these 80s but man my generation expect you to listen to these new crap rappers
B.I.S.O.N.: BRISTOL SCREENWRITER NONSTUDENT mad props for your taste of music. It shows that you had a unique taste for music, and I bet you’re doing some great things with your talents
That's funny man. :) Loved the bass for sure.
Me too. In Atlanta though. Dudes would come into my room and be like "nigga wtf are u listening to??" lol
THIS is a timeless bassline! This guy is BRILIANT!!!
Tru dat!
John Taylor is amazing.
He was mentored by Nile Rogers
@@darrylwaites7747 Wow! Makes 100% sense!!!
Completely underrated.

Planet Earth is arguably Duran Duran's best track
One of the best bass guitarists.......ever
Peter M word. He’s a freaking legend and a gentleman to boot.
Peter M you got it
ruclips.net/video/rjcbWcL6gPc/видео.html
Not many bands forefront the bass player over the guitar like these guys did, Duran Duran is a band that really makes you respect proper basslines, it was the driving force behind each of their songs.
Agreed he is magnificent so creative and talented!!
I feel sorry for those who missed the 80's.
Best of times.
I was young in the 80's but grew up with Duran Duran I remember singing this at primary school!
Dancing days , the best . Groovin to this gem
Exactly.. cannot be duplicated !
I wish I was around in these days.
@Suit guy Interesting, I don’t think it was that bad over here in Europe. I remember it as a nice and trouble free time. But of course I was still a kid in the early 80s 😉
My all-time fave Duran Duran song. Still epic to this day💜
Mine to. 1983's short lived show MV3 brung me here
💯
You know it sister!
I agree with you 😂😂🎉🎉
I think it's excellent, but I slightly prefer Girls On Film
Loved Duran Duran in the 80s and still do. This is most likely one of the best songs ever written. It is great, upbeat and feel good song. We loved it, danced to it and enjoyed it with friends. We loved all of their music, but this one stood out by far. Great and timeless sound.
I believe it’s about nuclear war
heading down to *Billy's*
Yes - Simon says "nuclear" a lot in Duran Duran songs... you're about as easy as a nuclear war. Sting did too! @@jmf3353
Not even the best Duran Duran song...? Claps and missing that "wall of sound". Do you believe in shame? Come undone. Rio. Wolf. Is there something I should know? Reflex? Notorious. Electric Barbarella. I mean - best? New Moon... New Religion... Wild Boys... View to a Kill even... HUH!! ???
The bass player carries this band. Love them!!
John Taylor is one of the most underrated bass players of all time in my opinion
John Taylor is great!
Said they didnt know how to play thier instruments on first lp!
One of his influences is bernard edwards from chic
It's rare to have bass guitar do that generally it's the lead guitar Taylor is an exception to the rule!!
Proper bass line
the very song that captured me with Duran Duran 1982 - a year after release. 42 years later...
2023 anybody? I absolutely love this tune when I was younger and still do day by day!❤
Yes, I'm here. Loved them then and now. 🔥
me too!(I’m 57 now)
60' in 2024. Got this in Duran Duran and Planet Earth folder. LoL
I'm going to be in an old folks' home, still listening to Duran Duran
Same here!!!! 😸
woooo
Haha. I'll be listening to it forever, but no fucking chance in hell I'm going into one of those places. I have a cliff picked out over the Atlantic.
No DOUBT!!!
Lmao u so funny and me to
that bassline 😍
That shit does gallop 🙂
The song that announced Duran Duran to the world
THAT BASS WHAT CARRIES THIS SONG ALL THE WAY TO 2021 and it s still on 🔥
John is absolutely stunning in this video ❤️❤️
The amazing thing about this song is that it sounds futuristic, despite the fact that it was written 35 years ago. It's difficult to understate how much of an achievement that is.
A D&D song like many others that's is pure brilliance - PROUD MASTERPIECE.❤
John Taylor is a highly underrated musician, he was so good looking no one cared how talented he was
Please enlighten us as to how you determined he is underrated. Have you interviewed any bassists since the 80s who may or may not have been inspired by his playing? How many albums has Duran Duran sold?
@@jimlovesgina easy buddy, it's just an opinion.
@@jimlovesgina do you not hear how good his bass is in this song
@@melialove6549 you're seriously talking out of your arse.
I seem to recall John getting a bass player of the year award in the 80's, maybe twice. He's certainly not underrated by any stretch of the imagination.
John Taylor is a very underestimated bass player. His work on tracks like "Rio", "Girls on Film" and specially on this one is simply amazing. Try and pay attention. He should be on almost every "Best" list.
I never picked up on him back in the eighties. I don't know why. I guess that I just didn't take synth-pop seriously. He is a damn good bass player.
Truth be told Duran Duran hits were based mostly on his bass skills. But it was so synth rich that it was hard to tell.
Yuri Teixeira He is. And he got me into bass.
@@jackdonith very true. All dd's hits are because of john's talent and skill
He's very underrated.
After all these years, I never realized what an absolutely sick bass line this song has!
JT is one of the best bassists in the business.
+Tracie Holladay flea and fieldy
Yes they are amazing too
certainly is the band duran duran new romantic icon
seth716 The thing that made this song so appealing was the bassline.
The bassist is brilliant.
Duran Duran was-and still is-unlike any other group to emerge from the burgeoning "new wave" or "synth-pop" boom of the late 70's and early 80's. For one, they were all solid writers, as this song proves. Two, instead of being a vocalist and a synth player, they were an ACTUAL band. Three, each instrument could be heard clearly throughout the big production; each instrument filled a role in the sonic picture instead of simply filling holes and wasting time. There's a lot of rather complex interplay between the guitars, bass and keyboards that lends itself very well to repeat listens and holds up to excessive playing. Very well done.
True
Agreed it was actually a revolutionary time for mainstream pop/ rock/punk. New wave punk such as The clash etc.. really came out of their shell so to speak. Bands that were trying to break thru into mainstream finally had a conduit to do so. New wave also emerged with bands like Eurythmics, flock of seagulls and of course Duran Duran and as a result the new romantic scene also branched out too. To this day its roots can still be heard in dance music. Was a great time for a music lover like myself. I went the way of metal but learned the significance of these genres later in life and as a result i enjoy them in my 50s to this day.
good points. the thing about image - duran duran started as a band, playing live. they did not know or intend to be pin ups. they wanted to be the biggest band in the world and did achieve that status. however their management realised this video got strong reactions from younger girls, as well as everyone else. so they they had a new curve to their marketing and placing focus on looks in addition to the music. in theory sounded great - but some people were put off by pretty boy image - as if you cant look that good and be a real band. Incredibly, they were. and here were are 2023 42 years later...
immense talent, vision, and courage. in the first 10 years played over 1000 live shows.
rock and roll hall of fame 2022. i was so happy for them to get that recognition - as i was ridiculed for liking duran duran. there was a stigma of sorts - but as time passed that stigma eroded, and by early 2000s duran duran were now percieved as something of a pop music heavy weight with the utmost respect by all. i always knew duran duran were amazingly diverse with style and composition, and leaving out guitars or only synth with some songs, or only using guitars with others, and reliant on melody and lyrics and vocals (which simon le bon has bettter than almost all of the singers out there) .
anyway, my points from scotland and vive la duran duran
Oh man John Taylor's bass line here us badass. What a groover.
Too right the bass is exceptional!
And think that 3, 4 years before realising that album, John had no clue how to play a guitar... He learnt everything by his own! A total genius! 😍😍😍
Actually... That was Nick Rodes that couldn't play much on the Keys. HE Is Self taught! Well...
Actually I think all of them were pretty much self taught.
And sings great harmonies with Simon!
@@j.s.connolly8579 John is self-taught, too. (Source: his auto-biography 😁)

Duran Duran are incredibly talented and their music is legendary !!! ❤🎉🌟
I love watching Simon dancing!!!! What a doll. 😘

I don't know why I'm so mesmerized by the way John Taylor turns around at 2:56 😍😍
He's GREAT here but the Reflex video OMG THUD :)
Sexy man. Period!

Check out his bass playing in Rio; the whole album is a bass masterclass.
My daughter is going to her first gig tonight. It got me thinking about going to my first one. Which brought me here. Edinburgh Playhouse 1988. Thanks lads, it was a great night.
Best post punk song!
That bassline
Another example of John Taylor's exemplary bass.
Black 80’s baby from the Netherlands here, I grew up with friends who listened to hiphop, I liked hiphop too but I had really had a love for the 80’s new wave sounds as well, I still listen to it a lot and when people find out they are in disbelief 😂
Opening Shot of Roger Taylor STILL gives me Butterflies in my Tummy!! 7th & 8th grade was a blast for Durannies Everywhere....JT rockin that Bass and Blowin my mind. God I LOVED THEM

Maybe we just have different opinions to you. It happens!
Iconic video, stylish, unique, nothing like it. Iconic band. What's more to say, and still going strong. So pleased they finally got into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so well deserved. Kate Bush this year hopefully, another well deserved one that's waited far too long.
The 80's were a blast! I feel so blessed to have experienced those years! Duran Duran's music is timeless!
Mee too!
Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants, Euryrhmics, Pet Shop Boys etc etc....😃👋
@@IronMan-fz4ot Count me in as well.😀 It was literally a flood of bands and songs. Sure, some of the songs were terrible, however, the creativity was off the charts. The '80s and even the early '90s had great music. I believe that people listen more so to music because they weren't immersed in their phones and the internet, as they are today.
Great music, great times. Youth foot loose, fancy free, hanging with our buddies having a time of our lives. Forever in our hearts. Hi from Queensland, Australia ❤🙏🖐
There it is. The dance that defines the 80s. Horrifically awesome
Nearly as bad as Rick Ashley...😂
Wouldn't that be the Moonwalk?
Did Simon inspire "The Carlton" with those moves?
ugh there's so much to love about this song, this mv. Obviously john is drop dead gorgeous and a god on bass but I love how attention is given to ALL the members here. Roger's smile is golden, Andy's and Nick's fits are on point, and I will forever be obsessed with Simon's white girl dancing lmaooo
This is one of my favorite songs by Duran Duran. I just love these guys!!! Been a fan from day one.
Great bass player 👌 the bass line is amazing on this track.
John taylor is an amazing bassist 🖤
John Taylor 😍MEOW!!!!
I was into heavy metal as a kid when this came out and had no time for DD. Well now I’m 55-still into heavy metal, but now love DD. Matured a bit, expanded my musical tastes big style n appreciate a band full of talented musicians-plus learning bass with Johns tutorials!
Ha, I'm 53, started out loving DD as a pre-teen and then moved into metal. Still love DD to this day!
Duran Duran was real alternative music in the beginning, and they never sold out their sound, but adapted to the times, yet still holding on to that very version of alternative music. It was our generation who knew alternative music, nothing compares, to this day..
I was 11, I loved Simon Le Bon and this Album. 39 years later nothing has changed 😍
Lord have mercy!!!! I miss the eighties!!!! This group here was my favorite of all time.....next to Kraftwerk!!!!
good taste
Marva I loved the 80's too! One of the best band ever!!!
Glad to see someone else enjoys craftwerk
Mine too. I used to take my cassette recorder to the playground and get 'high' on the swings listening to kraftwerk.
Marva Jones-McMullin They were Goth Pop
Always remember seeing this band as a support act at Sheffield Polytechnic one Saturday night in the early 80’s s4and they were something very special, a brilliant band live. They introduced this song as their first single to be released during the next week and the rest is history!
Wow. How cool
We will never have song artists as good as they were back in the 80s but we will always be blessed with there music for as long as life on earth exists.
Brilliant 👌🎉
Can't beat the 80s
I absolutely love the bass guitar on this!

Sara Rodrigues I really had a mad crush on John Taylor!!! He was the finest man in the group.....He still looks good!!!😍💖😘💖
Duran Duran's best song. Too bad those times are gone forever. It sucks immensely.
Duran Duran hyvä Artisti?.
Modern music is a cancer that only cares about money.
@@pearljam619 your wrong about that! They care about being horrible too!
Tonio Miklo I agree but at least we have the song forever and i never tire of it. Today’s music is utter garbage and doesn’t come close to it and never will.
Music meant MORE than music in the Eighties: Fashion, life-style, art.......
This video sparked an 11yo San Diego kid's love of music. Duran are my band. Always was, always will be.
Nick Rhodes never fucked around on keys and how John Taylor introduced funk bass into new wave is still gold to this day. Great stuff.
Duran Duran was NOT really a Pop band, but a funk band. Listen to that bass, especially in the chorus. Chic approved this message.
The 80s: _Lived 'em. Loved 'em. Miss 'em._
You sir are totally correct!
Don’t make excuses, they were just a great band that gave so much joy to millions of us.
They expertly filtered a good mix of sounds. Disco, pop, funk, punk.
Yeah. They are cursed by getting too much radio play (though good for them financially). People hear their songs played all the time so they tune them out and dismiss them as mainstream corporate rock for the masses. Had they not become so popular, they would be more appreciated in the way the Cure is now. They have similar roots in post-punk, with many of those bands being influenced by funk and disco.
Well Talor says he syncopated his bass tracks. You may be on to something...
great bass line, owns the song
God I remember hearing this once as a little kid on MTV and vaguely remembering the song, but couldn’t place it. Then I find this and it snapped back into my mind so clearly. Weird. I remembered the chorus and it hit like a truck finally remembering this again !!!
Love to Tipton missing you all I hope the oak is doing good 👍
Back when MTV actually had something to do with music and showed anything other than Ridiculousness 24/7...

One of the BEST songs of the 1980’s...or ever! 😍😃
The "new romantics" sums up the look and sound they were going for. I'd have to say they nailed it 👍😉
Love the galloping base on this track!
Dat bass 😍
Wow, this is a new wave classic. I was a big fan of Duran Duran in the 80's but I haven't listened to them in years. Oddly, my 9 year old son is obsessed with them at the moment. He had me break out all the CD's and has me watching all the videos - thanks to video games and cartoon shows featuring 80's music. Hilarious.
They were so woefully underrated in the early 80's (and for most of their career frankly) with critics relegating them to teeny bop status. But they were amazing. Pioneers of new wave, and specifically the new romantic movement, fashion trend setters (Miami Vice copied them) and talented musicians:
Simon Le Bon with his eccentric lyrics and unique voice, Nick Rhodes with his innovative and ethereal synth sounds, John Taylor with his groove-laden driving bass lines, Andy Taylor with his funky and technically flawless rhythm guitar and Roger Taylor with his insane percussive speed and understated brilliance. Genius I say!
Spot on 👍😁
your son has good taste. that's encouraging.
Not eccentric, esoteric.
No, I meant eccentric as in unusual, peculiar, irregular not esoteric as in unable to be understood. You're not supposed to try to figure out what he means but interpret them according to your reality. It means different things to different people. And that is intended according to Simon.
Their fame notwithstanding, they were critically underrated and even ridiculed. People would argue that their popularity was due to their looks and not their music. Even bands that came to be highly respected and revered, like Depeche Mode, were ridiculed in the early years. If you read the liner notes of a lot of the albums from these bands, they include nasty yet hilarious negative comments from countless critics.

People were too high on coke to care about anything back then.
ah yes, the good old times.. of 2009.
Not everyone was happy. What a myth. People just have more access to say what they feel now. We had like 5 national tv stations in the 70s, and until cable and the internet happened only a limited narrative existed.
I've read SO MANY Comments on John's Bass work on this song... Listen to the ENTIRE Album ESPECIALLY Songs like,

This video / song / clothes / the sound is the very definition of "new romantic" 1980-1983
As well as the vacant eyed MTV stare. Blue Steel, to be precise.
Yes it was a great time, lots of fun, the music still sounds great today! My kids definately dont agree but it was an original sound and though I like todays music I am always drawn back to this time, perhaps because I was 17-18 when this came out, good memories :)
