    He was ripped that year for sure. He looks like the best of today's classic physique guys but with more mass. Still hard to beat even today. While his legs weren't huge by today's standards, his calves would blow away many top competitors today.

    He never gets enough credit for his back. Of the few photos and bits of footage available, it always looks phenomenal, fully developed lower lats, big traps, thickness and width with a great Christmas tree.

      Gaz Corn yeah his back was great for that era. Thy why he was and still is the king. Fuck Phil.

    • @TheLusianPopa
      @TheLusianPopa 5 лет назад +1

      he had a great back ON PAPER
      Great attachment, good thickness and detail from top to bottom
      Problem is he lacked width and v taper, his front and rear lat spread were very bang average because f that, especially compared to guys like sergio oliva or franco
      there is a darn good reason there are hardly any pics with him on a rear lat spread, and the front version he also very rarely hit it.He simply avoided hitting them because he knew they werent strong poses for him
      Just because someone has a great bodypart doesnt mean he will look amazing in poses that showcase that bodypart
      example?dorian yates and side triceps
      levrone and side chest, levrones chest was very shapely but not particularly thick or wide or striated and it attached high on his torso unlike say arnold or coleman, yet his side chest is top 3 ever
      Phil heath has some of the best arms of all time , but hs front double biceps especially in recent years has sucked balls

    • @TheLusianPopa
      @TheLusianPopa 5 лет назад +12

      amazing legs?id call them decent but not amazing
      tom platz had AMAZING legs
      a bodypart to be considered great, at least IMO, has to have size, shape and separation( and symmetry between left and right but thats another matter).Arnold has great separation but no shape( zero sweep) and not enough size.He fails in 2./3.
      Cold truth
      His biceps have all 3 for example, same for his chest....but the legs were kinda average

    The dude is just the definition of perfection (no homo). Built like a freakin' Greek God and doesn't look abnormal in any way, shape or form. I mean has any human EVER had a more perfect looking body than 1970's Arnold? Looking at pics of Arnold from this time period and looking at pics of the Mr Olympia winners of today is just astounding. Body building went from building the most beautifully perfect muscular body imaginable to building the most freakish, cartoonishly-muscled body you could imagine. It's disgusting to see what the sport has turned into over the last 40-50 years.

  • @jgamez5023

    I believe between 72 and 73 Arnold tore up his knee pretty bad, required surgery etc. I was listening to him talk about it in an interview. Once the doctor cleared him, he said he worked his lower body like a madman and it shows!

  • @metalzen3480
    @metalzen3480 6 лет назад +39

    Bigger doesn't mean better and neither does being so vascual you look like a circulatory system chart. The bodybuilders of Arnold's era were just much more appealing than todays open class bodybuilders. Arnold will always be the standard for that balance of size, symmetry and conditioning. So glad this asthetic is making a comeback with classic physique.

    Excellent revisit of 1973 and Arnold's shredded conditioning as he was also developing more mass getting to his thickest, most massive in '74. He was more ripped than Nubret this year and had pretty well rebuilt his leg that had gotten hurt a year earlier. Striations and definitions are awesome on Arnold with that unique sweep like no other!

  • @TheBlondeOak
    @TheBlondeOak 5 лет назад +2

    Arnold definitely looked great in '73. The biggest surprise (to me) is that he was able to get his quads looking that good in time for the Olympia. They might not have been BIG, but considering the fact that he had a leg/knee injury in late 1972 (and his quads were VERY small at the beginning of 1973) --- he really accomplished something amazing.

    I agree and have been saying the same thing for years. You can flip a coin between his best year, 1973 or 74. I would choose 73 since I think he looked really well conditioned. The pose at 1:30 is really neat, the cuts in the front thigh, the narrow waist, the V taper. The next year, he added some mass. But I think he lost some sharpness. I think this was his best.

Sibil competed in bodybuilding I believe throughout her 30’s and began training Roelly in the mid 2000’s when she was around 60 years old. Interesting story and there’s hardly any informational content on this topic so it would make for a cool video.

    Arnold came shredded in 1973 because he didn't win quite as easily in 1972 and the judges told him they wanted to see him leaner, so in 1973, that's what he focused on. I actually think his 1974 body was most impressive though. He was slightly less conditioned, but he was freaking huge, and he was at his most impressive, imo.

    The difference between a juiced Arnold and the guy that came off the PED's in between competitions is remarkable. Goes to show how potent the roids are. He actually didn't look like a BB when the chemicals had left his body, he was left with a quite slim yet athletic physique when he came off the juice - NO where close to the jacked and big muscular body he had when the syringes were filled with testosterone, decca and winstrol. People tend to forget that Arnie was a product of PED's just like champs like Lance Armstrong. The latter guy was crucified for it. Arnold was glorified. Roids ain't fair.

    @3:08 '73 was a financially troublesome year for Weider and the IFBB. It was unfortunate for the competitors that the Olympia was held in September, the very month Joe was late on his car note.

    Nick, have you ever thought about doing a video on Brian Whitacre? Imo, the greatest drug free bodybuilder ever. Top notch conditioning. He isn’t well known because he doesn’t like to subscribe to the quick-attention IG culture, and he’s probably pretty busy being a professor to care.
