    Marcus Mariota was one of the most highly touted prospects coming out of the 2015 NFL Draft, so it was no surprise when he was taken number 2 overall by the Tennessee Titans who were in desperate need of turning their sinking franchise around. But here in 2019, 5 years following Mariota's NFL debut, he finds himself watching from the sidelines after being benched in week 6. So what happened to create this difficult situation and who is to blame for him failing to reach his ceiling, and what does his future look like in the NFL? This video follows his journey from draft, to face of the Titans, to an uncertain path forward.

    Went to an organization that didn’t care... they tried to change him to a Tom Brady type of quarterback... look at how good Lamar Jackson is right now because of how they built that offense around his strengths... Same. He's not blameless, as he's often too conservative with the ball, holding onto it too long and not being willing to take shots down the field, but he's been fighting an uphill battle. He's had 3 different head coaches and 4 different OCs, and after his second season, his strengths were never played to, especially after Vrabel showed up. It doesn't help that he's never had a reliable line in front of him, either.

    Coming from a Titans fan:
    I will always be a fan of Mariota, he helped bring this franchise at least some relevancy and made (at least for me anyways) being a Titans fan fun again, even though the franchise set him up to fail from the beginning. Think his biggest turning point in his career was the knee injury he sustained against the Jags in 2016.Like you mentioned in the video it was his best year as a Titan and he was never the same after that. Constant coaching changes and scheme also played a factor. I think this is without a doubt his last year in Tennessee, and I hope he goes somewhere where he will finally be utilized.

    I'll maintain till the day I die that WE (The Titans Franchise) failed him. He didn't progress as he should've (and would've somewhere else) but that's because this team has proven to be COMPLETELY inept at building a young QB. There's a reason why this team hasn't had a real QB since McNair. There's a reason why Jake Locker said he lost his love for the sport. As a Titans fan I'm more than happy to admit that the leadership and coaching is joke and I feel sorry for the next poor bastard that gets drafted by them.

    • @zachkuykendall5388
      @zachkuykendall5388 5 лет назад +15

      Vince Young, Jake Locker, and now Marcus Mariota all ruined by Tennessee. Now I'm wishing we accepted that trade from the Eagles a few years ago, Mariota could have been so much better with Chip Kelly than he is with any coach he has had in Tennessee. That fibula injury he suffered a few years ago feels like that hurt his career, and he just doesn't have confidence in himself to take off to run it anymore. Our organization has never capitalized on Marcus's talent and what he is good at doing, instead they force him into a pocket passer scheme where they're making him throw the ball. A spread style of offense is what he needs, even though he hasn't played in that in a long time its what plays to his strengths. A lot of people were blaming it all on Marcus, but as time rolls along I think everyone is now starting to realize how bad our organization is as well. Honestly I would have been much more happy if Lafleur was our head coach last year, but still we didn't have much playmakers on our offense sadly. Even if we are getting ready to move on from Marcus that next QB coming in is gonna be in for a bumpy ride. Horrible O Line play, terrible play calling, and to much inconsistency. I know Joe Burrow has been talked about being the possible #1 pick this year, but just imagine if he slipped to our team. A lot of people have him as the next Tom Brady, but god damn will Tennessee ruin his career if that's the case. As time goes on I fear this team will be stuck in mediocre for a long time, and Houston and Indianapolis will always be the top dogs of our division.

    In the NFL however I don't know where I think his biggest flaw comes from, holding onto the ball and taking a sack. Maybe that's where the play calling/coaching comes in because I don't recognize that player. There are also the injuries which at this level he seems prone to.
    I would like to see him in LA (Chargers) next year waiting on Rivers in terms of starting or in Seattle or Baltimore (both situations being a Hill in Nola situation) as back up.

    The decline was caused by MM being constantly battered physically and mentally by coaches who never looked at his skill set and insisted on forcing him to be something he would never be, a pocket passer. Look at his stats in his 2nd year, and that was done trying to make Marcus the next Peyton Manning. Then the sacks and injuries started, yet the next 2 coaches and 3 offensive coordinators still didn't have a clue. He was a shell by the 5th year and they rewarded him by kicking him to the curb. Not once did Marcus ever complain. Hopefully there's something left in the gas tank, and hopefully he proves everyone wrong in Atlanta.

      fo fopple Na man Tannehill shows that the problem was always Mariota. His deep ball is genuinely abysmal, a mix of he has a noodle arm and is just too scared to throw a ball more than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. Its not like Arthur Smith magically became a competent play caller the moment Tannehill started. Tannehill gave him intangible things that Mariota doesn't and will never have. Tannehill gets alot of shit but he was alot better in Miami than ppl give him credit for and overcame one of the worst coaches in the league in adam gase to put up some solid years but also struggled with injury. Im not a Titans fan but I have a friend whos a Titans fan and I was legit telling him since like week 4 that the titans should bench mariota for tannehill and he laughed at me. I mean if you look at Eli Manning's posteason performances you too can lump him with Joe Flaccid as an elite QB. But Eli clearly has his flaws and in some cases, its harder to hide it when the rest of the team needs improvement from the ground up.

    • @markboston9303
      @markboston9303 5 лет назад

      @Liu Kang I know this shit is long but that play was a bit dirty and when they had lost key players on offense, Flacco would be trying to get those PI calls at least 2-3 times a game. I'm telling you, Torrey Smith is probably the all-time leader in PI calls.
      Its not like it's a foolproof play that anyone can do and get away with. Well maybe the top QBs. Under throwing can lead to ball getting picked off, WR possibly messing up the route and then having to protect it or play D. Offensive pass INT if refs kinda see what's going on. (Flacco played Patriots in 13 or 14 and he did that tacky play and there was a no call).
      But Flacco weaponized this play and won a few games off it too. It like it made up portion of his deep attack, and considering the aging talent on that team, that they picked up, he relied on it too much and I think teams got wind of this tactic. I can't prove really that it stopped working league wide but I did notice watching him recently that I hadn't seen that play in a while. Maybe he only did it with Smtih but I dont think he was that great of a QB. I think be was okay but that gimmick won him a lot of games and I remember him using that shit on his SB run.
      It's not cheating, I just think its tacky so that's how I feel about dude

      @@masterrace4005 exactly what I was going to say. Mariota wouldn't even do good in a Lamar Jackson system he just isn't that good. Especially with no team around him the first 2 seasons but they added players on both sides to help he just isn't any good.

      @@mirxcles1914 You're wylin. I watched every throw of Mariota's NFL career. He really isn't that accurate. Even on wide open throws his timing would be off and end up causing the receiver to adjust and that in it'self would prevent touchdowns. He also isn't as good of a runner as people think. He bullied the Pac 12 defensive players because Pac 12 is notorious for having bad defensive prospects but He has never been elusive or strong enough to break tackles at the NFL level. He literally sacks himself because he runs into lineman and goes down.

    I love how this channel addresses more interesting players and match ups, and as far as Mariota is concerned its a bit disappointing. He will get another chance someday and if he has an awesome offensive coach or some awesome O-coordinator will earn a spot and be a backup for 2 years.

      Watched him play, titans fan here. Slow release, inconsistent. I have seen him make stunning passes, and miss ones that are too easy. I like Mariota, but he can't stay healthy. Running him in a read option isn't a good idea as he seems to have islander ankles like tua. Good luck, class act and I want to see him succeed. New Orleans would be great for him
