A lot of times it seems like some guys are so physically gifted, they’ve never had to work at football very hard. Then they get to the NFL.....and the work ethic they never developed, is hard to come by. Its like a really smart kid, who never had to study, but then gets to grad school and has no idea how to prepare for a test, because they’ve never needed to. I feel bad for most draft busts, because really they are just kids and their failure is on the front page and will be talked about for years to come. I’m kind of shocked that teams investing their future in so much uncertainty, don’t have some kind of mentoring program. An assistant coach or retired player who gets payed a decent salary, just to make sure that the million dollar kid is keeping it together and getting tucked in at bed time. If anything, paying more attention to the psychological and emotional struggle that a young kid who is given tens of millions of dollars suddenly, would seem worth while. Its impossible for a 21 year old to realize that their NFL career will be over in the blink of an eye.
That's why having a good front office and coaching staff is also very important for a young player's successes. A good example would be Brett Favre. Prior to being traded to the Packers and training/learning under Mike Holmgren (who already had an impressive resume coaching/mentaring Joe Montana and Steve Young for the Niners), he was on his way of becoming another NFL bust with the Falcons.
I've wondered this same thing. I think some - not all but some - players would even be receptive to the idea. Josh Gordon was on like chance number six of trying to keep out of off-field trouble and seems a reasonable guy, he knew what he was and what he was liable to do. You can't tell me hiring a babysitter for another 90K a year wasn't worth a try.
Everybody needs guidance in life as a 20-24 year old. I know I did, and I come from a good family. I know some teams have hired “chaperones” for players with off the field troubles, but I just think especially the young guys, would benefit from somebody reminding them that the goal isn’t to just get in the league, but to be able to sign two near-max contracts later in your career. That and each team should have a player’s financial planner to help them set themselves up for life. So many talented players have been lost due to immaturity.
The stories of busts are always fascinating, particularly when you gain an understanding of why they were overhyped and why they failed, but I really love stories about the guys who were overlooked and rejected, fought their way onto a team and ended up in the HOF. Dick Lane. Deacon Jones. Marion Motley. Kurt Warner. Johnny Unitas. Bart Starr. Warren Moon. Tom Brady. The list goes on and on of great players who were overlooked or cast aside, but who eventually succeeded. You could do a whole series on them. I'd watch them over and over and over.

Anyone who really scouted "The Legend of Johnny Football" knew his reputation nonstop partying, sloppy hero-ball style of play, and the large possibility he wouldn't make it without having Mike Evans to throw to.
And to add insult injury to the Cleveland Browns. Teddy Bridgewater was in that draft last two quarterback and all their data suggested that Bridgewater on paper was the better quarterback. But no they decide to go with Johnny Menzel because they thought he would help sell tickets.

OUCH!!! that last clip with no running from Seattle really hurt!!!I will live with that one for ever. I guess, as you said, failure is the foundation of greatness. Hope the Seahawks understand how thick and strong the foundation it's right now....
Bad teams, these guys were serviceable backups at best, and teams with bad culture and negative fan bases are going to have an impact on confidence and motivation
To fair to the Mahomes/Watson folks, I personally think that the Bears are sooooo inherently incapable of drafting and developing QB's that Mahomes and/or Watson would have failed in Chicago as well. So I think that Mahomes, instead of showing the Bears he knows how to count with his fingers whenever he faces off against them, should be eternally grateful that the Bears didn't draft him and make him another in a loooong line of Chicago QB Draft Busts.
Tim Couch had his health destroyed by the lack of a decent O-line his first few years, but he's still the only QB to take the expansion Browns to the playoffs (though another injury prevented him from playing once they got there).
@@MHNK77 He had such a weird career. Was a top 10 draft pick, brought us to 2 championship games, his most memorable play is the butt fumble and almost lost his job to Tim Tebow.lolll. Always rooted for the dude but he was carried by the defense and always had great running backs. Definitely on the fence calling him a bust just expect more from a high draft pick.
@@AndreNoStacks They were all second rounders I believe but definitely all heart breakers. I really thought we got the steal of the draft with Geno, when he slipped I was so happy. Lmao. I totally forgot about Devin Smith that dude totally disappeared after his injury. Sad.
@@McBurgerDeluxe I wasn't being sarcastic, if that's what it looked like. I agree he is a bust, definitely. But man, 2 trips to the AFC championship is a hell of an achievement for a bust. Definitely a weird career.
In 1962, the Cleveland Browns traded Bobby Mitchell (HOF) to move up to the #1 spot in the draft. They used it to draft Ernie Davis. Unfortunately, Davis got leukemia and died without taking even 1 NFL snap.
Manziel is 28 now, while Brady is 43. PS: Manning and Leaf were said to be the top two picks, but the Colts picked Manning first, hence the Chargers picked Leaf second because Manning was already picked. So can you blame them?! The Colt had the first choice, thus leaving the Chargers actual with no choice considering the circumstances. The next QB who was drafted was Charlie Batch as pick 60 (served mostly as back up for the Steelers) Brian Griese can be called the most overlooked QB of this draft. Round 3, pick 91. I can't tell how much he was on the radar back then. So there weren't that many franchise QBs in the draft to pick from.
As a teacher, the key thing I try to drill into kids heads is that hard work will always exceed pure talent. You look at Manziel who was gifted never worked to better himself. Fast forward to the present and you have Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, and Pat Mahomes who have all held positions as starters and could most likely be franchise qbs. They have all had bad games, but the difference is they try to be better than they were the day before.
I don't know if you watched the 2014 NFL Draft, but Johnny Manziel was *not* overdrafted. Football heads had him as high as #3 and no lower as #16 to the Cowboys because "Jerry Jones could not pass up the opportunity of a lifetime."
The draft bust hierarchy: Tier 0 (God-tier bust): Ryan Leaf Tier 1 (Talented, could've been HOFers if they commited themselves to the game): Jamarcus Russell, Johnny Manziel Tier 2 (Failed because of two of 3 factors: injuries, poor play, and off the field issues): Lawrence Phillips, Art Schlichter Tier 3 (Never deserved the hype): Brian Bosworth, Tony Mandarich Tier 4 (Failed because of the injury bug): Ki-Jana Carter, Steve Emtman Tier 5 (Simply isn't NFL material): Blair Thomas, Matt Leinart Tier 6 (Failed because they were immediately thrusted into the spotlight): Akili Smith, Heath Shuler Tier 7 (Average to above-average players who are always being compared to HOFers/future HOFers): Ken O'Brien, Jadeveon Clowney Tier 8 (Players who were drafted into the wrong system/wrong team): David Carr, Tim Couch Tier 9 (Players who didn't live up to the hype but still have long productive careers): Jim Plunkett, George Rogers
I still feel bad for David Carr I think in a good team/system with an o line he would not have been a bust. I mean, his little brother got dealt a better hand and it shows. I remember even John Madden talked about how good he was in the early years.
@@koalanate5549 Manziel could've been a HOFer, but like I said before, he never made football his priority. Had he focused on improving his game, who knows how good he can be.
I really enjoy your channel. I've decided to limit the people I watch and the pandemic made it easier. Your channel is top shelf for me. Very well presented, researched and interesting without being a sell out. Keep it up
Do people forget about Justin Blackmon? Had a solid rookie season for the Jags in 2012, then a series of DUI's and suspensions later and he hasn't played a down since 2013. Yet, he's still on the active roster.
I think that the pressure for success is so intense in the NFL that some players try to psychologically 'defuse' it by acting like they don't care. It's a self-protective mechanism, BUT it rarely works.
Manziel was overhyped by the (ESPN) media. Watching the film from his college days he was about a 6th - undrafted prospect due to inaccuracy, poor decision making, poor pocket awareness, poor footwork, average arm. Most of his college success came from reading his first progression before scrambling inexperienced defenses by scrambling around for 5 seconds then tossing one to a wide open receiver in the middle of the field. He did have a few impressive deep throws in the pocket, but they were few.
The Browns have the worst front office. They will waste the talent they have now, until they get an authority figure that can discipline a very undisciplined team.
Manziel would have failed in every organization, Cleveland was just stupid and drafted him. He had bad habits on the field, relied on his athleticism too much, didn't study the game and was way more interested in the fame behind being a football player than actually being a football player.
To the person reading this: I know times a rough and seem bleak like a tunnel that seems endless but there’s always light at the end. Like the dark days that make the bright days seem even brighter. I just want to let everyone know you’re beautiful. You are an amazing person and someone loves and appreciate you being here. So don’t give up because we all rooting for you even if you can’t see us. So you have an amazing day and god bless you and your family.
Whenever I hear that the Cleveland Browns drafted Manziel with their 22nd pick and Manziel turned out to be a bust, I always wonder how. How in the world is it possible that Cleveland only picked at 22? The rest of the story checks out, but how in the world was that possible? Then I remember it was a trade and the world makes sense again.

Yo STE the self-depreceation joke at the start was kinda funny but I do wanna say speaking as just a sub you don't fall short of my expectations, you consistently make solid videos so dont be actually hard on yourself :)
Love your content
Who doesn't?
OUCH!!! that last clip with no running from Seattle really hurt!!!I will live with that one for ever. I guess, as you said, failure is the foundation of greatness. Hope the Seahawks understand how thick and strong the foundation it's right now....
The moral of the story: Don't use steroids like Mandarich, use HGH like Manning!
Did you really have to put that clip at 16:41 😪😅
in a video about draft busts it makes zero sense at all.
That's because we STILL can't believe they didn't run the ball.
Stop reminding us :(
Here’s a fun question should a QBs like David Carr, and Tim Couch be considered busts or are they just products of really bad teams?
Bad teams, these guys were serviceable backups at best, and teams with bad culture and negative fan bases are going to have an impact on confidence and motivation
I remember Manziel’s debut. My Cincinnati Bengals shut that guy down. What a cathartic game
As a bears fan... I’ll just show myself the door
We'll drink down the pain together, man
Y'all took trubisky over Watson lol
Matthew Arnold mahomes*
@@Theonlyatoz mahomes obviously is better but he wasn't a day one starter like watson was.
You make some of the best Football related videos on yt in my opinion 👍🏼
My goodness, could you imagine if Green Bay would have took Barry Sanders.
Yeah, almost any team except the Lions.
Tim Couch had his health destroyed by the lack of a decent O-line his first few years, but he's still the only QB to take the expansion Browns to the playoffs (though another injury prevented him from playing once they got there).
Vernon Gholston broke my heart, then there's Dee Milliner , Calvin Pryor, even Mark Sanchez. Being a Jets fan has not been fun.lmao
As a fellow jets fan, I feel your pain. Let's not forget the great stephen hill and geno smith....along with devin smith
Mark Sanchez has to be the most accomplished bust of all time.
3:18 is when the video starts.
You’ve been killing it lately with your last few vids. Really good stuff!
My Favorite Channel! I have watched every video!
The next QB who was drafted was Charlie Batch as pick 60 (served mostly as back up for the Steelers)
Brian Griese can be called the most overlooked QB of this draft. Round 3, pick 91. I can't tell how much he was on the radar back then.
So there weren't that many franchise QBs in the draft to pick from.
12:50 who was leaf throwing to? There wasn’t a receiver within 10 yards of that pass
He was imagining being drafted by the Colts as the first overall pick.
He was real bad. And he carried Washington State on his back in the Rose bowl
Love STE
The thumbnail had Manziel, but we all knew the biggest star of this video would be Leaf.
*The art of being a bad franchise video pleaseeeee*
I don't know if you watched the 2014 NFL Draft, but Johnny Manziel was *not* overdrafted. Football heads had him as high as #3 and no lower as #16 to the Cowboys because "Jerry Jones could not pass up the opportunity of a lifetime."
The draft bust hierarchy:
Tier 0 (God-tier bust): Ryan Leaf
Tier 1 (Talented, could've been HOFers if they commited themselves to the game): Jamarcus Russell, Johnny Manziel
Tier 2 (Failed because of two of 3 factors: injuries, poor play, and off the field issues): Lawrence Phillips, Art Schlichter
Tier 3 (Never deserved the hype): Brian Bosworth, Tony Mandarich
Tier 4 (Failed because of the injury bug): Ki-Jana Carter, Steve Emtman
Tier 5 (Simply isn't NFL material): Blair Thomas, Matt Leinart
Tier 6 (Failed because they were immediately thrusted into the spotlight): Akili Smith, Heath Shuler
Tier 7 (Average to above-average players who are always being compared to HOFers/future HOFers): Ken O'Brien, Jadeveon Clowney
Tier 8 (Players who were drafted into the wrong system/wrong team): David Carr, Tim Couch
Tier 9 (Players who didn't live up to the hype but still have long productive careers): Jim Plunkett, George Rogers
I still feel bad for David Carr I think in a good team/system with an o line he would not have been a bust. I mean, his little brother got dealt a better hand and it shows. I remember even John Madden talked about how good he was in the early years.
you’re tripping if u think manziel could of been a hofer
There should be a special category just for players unfairly destroyed by the new Browns. Couch was only the first of many.
Koala Nate no I think he COULD’VE been too if he actually could make good reads while releasing the ball on time
@@koalanate5549 Manziel could've been a HOFer, but like I said before, he never made football his priority. Had he focused on improving his game, who knows how good he can be.
Omg bro the end was thoughtful and well-put. Great videos, man.
No one cares
if u were first,
no one cares if u were last,
but most importantly,
nobody asked.
Whatever gets you likes
Darren Gordon-Hill They’re not wrong though
But at the end of the day no one above the age of 9 cares that you made this
First and someone asked and I care and someone else cares
Im the one that asked
I like how this man talks about busts and i feel hes either a bengals or browns fan and is doing these vids to cope with the disaster of picks
Watching this video wearing my Brady Quinn Browns jersey
Always liked Brady, Jimmy Clausen too.
I really enjoy your channel. I've decided to limit the people I watch and the pandemic made it easier. Your channel is top shelf for me. Very well presented, researched and interesting without being a sell out. Keep it up
Thanks for shaming us brownies again with the thumbnail 😭😭😭
There always a shame
Yup yall will probs always suck
the city of cleveland is cursed
the old browns won a sb 5 years after leaving for baltimore
Manziel will always be a case study about how to destroy your career before it ever gets started.
Yo I’m somewhat early

You certainly outperform your expectations. Great video as always

There is Hello Fresh in the UK but I'm pretty sure the code won't work outside of the US, anyway ;)
Do people forget about Justin Blackmon? Had a solid rookie season for the Jags in 2012, then a series of DUI's and suspensions later and he hasn't played a down since 2013. Yet, he's still on the active roster.
So early that theres no views and 33 likes
As messed up as it sounds, it's weirdly entertaining to see how far busts will fall, like Russell and Manziel stuff was always funny to watch.
Russell was funny but with players like josh Rosen it’s just kinda sad
For an exhaustive listing of NFL draft busts, consult the Cleveland Browns roster since 1999!
It warms my Heart that Johnny Football is the thumbnail of this video, showing the true masters of draft busts the Cleveland Browns
Jesus didn’t fail. He died so that we could live. That’s not failure . That’s victory
I think that the pressure for success is so intense in the NFL that some players try to psychologically 'defuse' it by acting like they don't care.
It's a self-protective mechanism, BUT it rarely works.
Manziel would have succeeded in most organizations, who would have helped mentor and mature him. The browns just weren’t it.
No. "STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES, SIR!" Even Forrest Gump knows better.

The Easiest way to be a bust:
Get drafted by the browns
Whenever I hear that the Cleveland Browns drafted Manziel with their 22nd pick and Manziel turned out to be a bust, I always wonder how. How in the world is it possible that Cleveland only picked at 22? The rest of the story checks out, but how in the world was that possible? Then I remember it was a trade and the world makes sense again.
