The NFL Playoff format is one of the most high-pressure environments in all of professional sports, with a game that is already determined by inches in some cases now being broadcast to millions in a win-or-go-home scenario. Considering that NFL referees are already not known for their stunning accuracy, this has caused controversy on more than a few occasions to put it lightly. This video lays out some of the most infamous calls in playoff history and the waves they made in affecting the sport for years to come.
Welcome to Set the Edge, a channel dedicated to telling NFL stories the way they deserve to be told. If you enjoyed the video, please consider leaving a like and subscribing, it really goes a long way. Thanks for watching!

The megatron one was atrocious. He caught it, both feet in obviously. Went to the ground. Which means he is down in the end zone so touchdown. He drops the ball as he stands up and somehow that's ruled incomplete. A total embarrassment by NFL officiating.
tyreek hill's call with his ex is prolly worse
@@CBielski87 lmao he didn’t do anything
@@CBielski87 So, all you heard were the headlines and such right when it happened, and none of the rest of it.
As in, the part where the news station admitted they heavily edited the recording (including cutting out the part where she essentially admitted to having broken the kid's arm...or at least admitting Tyreek had nothing to do with it and admitting to being physical with him herself) because they thought that part wasn't "newsworthy".
Basically, that reporter wanted to make a name for herself as the journalist who brought down another athlete....and you swallowed it.
Not near as atrocious as the dez Bryant play lol..I knew the NFL was a money scam after that
I mean, the call was wrong but I guess I could see what they were thinking
that saints no-call is truly a textbook example of pass interference. it checks all of the boxes.
That call made me absolutely hurl. I was sickened
The second call yes the first one I could have gone either way.
And the ref was right there. A few feet away looking directly at the play. It's mind boggling.
reminds me of a tackle Kam Chancellor made that was flagged by the refs, but then literally used as an example of how the NFL wanted players to tackle later.
As a die-hard saints fan, that is just so freaking painful. I can be super happy and then someone mentions that play and I just become sad. Like really really sad.
We have the technology now where we could track the x,y,z position of a player's taint for 4 hours, but for some reason use the technology for highlights, and commercials to demonstrate how awesome those highlights were.
I hate the fact I know I'll be reminded of Superbowl 40 every time I watch a controversial calls video
Fun fact about the Tuck Rule is that the infamous 2001 game was only the third time it was ever used, the first two times being against the Patriots (both vs the Jets)
the packers and bucs game will be up here soon, as the PI calling was spotty at best and heavily favored brady
No it really won’t. They sold themeselves and thats coming from a packers fan
You need to do another one of these for recent play-offs. The NFC Championship game this year had several game changing missed calls. Not "maybe's", but objectively, unbiased missed calls.
There were missed call on both sides the Packers just didn't capitalize when they had their chances how does Aaron Rodgers only score 6 points off turnovers when Brady scored 21 off turnovers
6:54 UURRRRGGGHHH!! THAT CALL STILL ANGERS ME TO THIS DAY!!
some of the nfl rules are so dumb like you can catch the ball land with two feet in the endzone then lose the ball out of bounds and its not a td🤨🤨

One could also mention the end of the 2002 Wild Card game between the Giants and 49ers where the intended target after the botched field goal attempt was actually an eligible receiver, which if called correctly would have given the Giants a chance to win with a chip shot field goal following a pass interference. Of course, the Giants did a lot to lose the game, including breakdowns on both sides of the ball to blow a huge lead and not one, but two bad snaps cost the Giants field goal opportunities.

Like the super bowl had numerous calls give advantage to the buccs by screwing the chiefs as they got momentum, but then from the chiefs v brown game before that the same thing happened screwing over the browns. Like HOW is the reffing that bad
Bosa being held, Jimmy taking a shot to the head and late hit out of bounds. Spain without the S for us Niners fans
Wasn’t he out tho?
I'll give you Bosa being held. It was a boarder line call. Neimann's helmet didn't even touch Jimmy's and if you look at it from a different angle he was still in bounds.
Refs weren't calling anything all game. Also, offensive holding happens on almost every play. You Niners fans really need to move on.

Can we talk about the phantom roughing the passer call against the Chiefs in the 2018 AFC Championship? Or Mike Renfro getting robbed of a touchdown for the Oilers against the Steelers?
Title of the video is weird when you include the tuck rule. A bad rule called correctly can't be considered a bad call.
8:53 the tuck rule wasn't a bad call. It was the rule itself that was bad, the officially called the play correctly.
I find it absolutely hilarious that the Taints-Rams missed PI call has its own section of the video but the Falcons-49ers atrocious no-call isn't even mentioned.

TO BE FAIR, the Tuck Rule was an actual rule (albeit a shit one) which was technically called correctly.
Exactly! That’s not a shitty call, that’s how the rules worked at the time. It’s not a “technicality” that robbed the Raiders, that’s the rule. You can argue it’s a shitty rule and was rightfully removed, but can’t blame the refs for following it and making the right call.
Agreed, infact it was a great call. Shitty rule but the fact that the refs knew it and called it was a rare case of them actually doing their jobs correctly. Also some Patriots, especially Belichick, knew about it because it was called against the Pats earlier in the year when playing the Jets.
TO BE FAIR if the refs did there job and watched it frame by frame when the ball leaves Bradys hand hes not moving his arm, hes hit with his arm in a bend, not in motion.

Good video, except literally everyone outside of Detroit forgets that the wild card game between the lions and the cowboys, the game before the dez catch, the lions got screwed on a picked up pass interference call that likely would have one them that game, so the dez play wouldn't have ever had a chance to happen.
The refs probably figured they were saving Lion's fans feelings and giving them the L 1 week earlier instead of the inevitable one week later.
I like to think of the Dez catch of good old fashioned Karma. That picked up flag was BS
I think the Lions stood a good chance of beating Green Bay that year as well. We had the number two ranked defense in the league and for good reason. As for our offense? Stafford and Megatron, nuff said.
I’m convinced the NFL wanted the Rams to make the Super Bowl in 2018 because their franchise just moved to LA and built a massive new stadium so they needed to increase the cash flow

Overall, another good video, however I am a bit dissappointed in you this time, Edge. You included the Tuck Rule Game in a "worst calls" video. The tuck rule should never have existed and was completely stupid, but it was a rule at the time. So, it was only a bad call in the sense of sportsmanship and common sense, but the right call in the letter of the rule, unfortunately.
Deserves to be in there if it’s responsible for giving birth to an entire dynasty. Still the correct call though, even if it is the most retarded rule in league history...
@@u121386 so if it was the correct call you can't put it on worst calls list, even though I agree it was a stupid rule...Jets went through it too at the same year and still zero fucks given...

There must have been some other not so clever rules over the 100 years. Would be a nice idea for a video as well, I guess: The worst rules in NFL History.
@@BruceRKF Don’t get me wrong, there have been some pretty bad rules in the NFL. But what was extremely stupid about this one is that you can literally drop the ball as a passer without any consequence. I don’t know who came up with that rule or how it managed to last for more than a decade...
Every time is see the no call i remember we called three straight passes in the two minute warning in the red zone
Thats true, really for me I was rooting more for Brees to get another superbowl so he could ride off into the sunset and it was robbed from him, all hes done for the city of New Orleans and football in general thrown to the wayside by... money, trying to make the LA Rams relevant. How about the missed helmet to helmet call in the Browns v Chiefs game or the missed holding calls in the Buccaneers v Green Bay game? Refs should be held accountable for bad calls via fines, public apologies, and subject to termination.
There missed calls on both sides in the GB game
I love that the NFL is still trying to figure out what a fucking catch is. Let me clarify this for them; it is preferable for an imperfect rule to incorrectly deem some non-catches as catches than for an imperfect rule to take away legit catches. So make the rule err on the side of letting things be a catch.

the SB being talked about sounded awfully similar to the Packers Bucs NFC Championship game we just saw
Not in the slightest. That game was called consistently for both teams
Video actually starts at 2:13
the funny part about the saints vs rams call is the fact that pass was really bad and could have been picked off if the db turned around
Don’t forget in the 2013 nfc championship game, the refs also allowed the Seahawks to call a timeout 58 seconds after the last play. Since the NFL has a 40 second play clock, they should have gotten a delay of game
I thought this was a list of calls that were incorrectly made in the playoffs. Like it or not, the Tuck Rule was a rule (and one that fucked the Patriots themselves in the week 2 game that saw Bledsoe get injured) and the call was the correct one according to the rules.
Not liking a rule doesn't make it a bad call.
The "bad call" would be (A) Implementing an unnecessary and stupid rule, and (B) that particular call might have been a bad interpretation of the rule for what it was intended to do, specifically eliminating fumble calls because of errant motion towards the body on attempted passes.
Someone who remembers when the tuck rule went AGAINST the Pats! Nice
@@timothystamm3200 again, not liking a rule doesn't make it a bad call.
Tuck rule was not a bad call but a bad rule
To be fair, I think that's what he means. It's why the title includes controversies. But yeah the play fit the exact letter of the rule.
I think the biggest problem is people have twisted the narrative over time because A) they hate the Patriots and B) in all the controversy, it's they forget that wasn't the only game that season decided by that rule. Hell, the Jets won two games that year because of it. The first in the game against the Patriots (ironically) when Bledsoe went down, and then again Week 17. But the way people talk about it you'd think it was almost literally the only time it was used.

Tuck rule was the right call... bad rule but right call based on the rules
I think we all know one that will be on here in the future, much like the Tuck Rule: Browns v. Chiefs. If that rule about a fumble into the endzone going to the other team as a touchback isn't changed in the offseason, then there's going to be some serious headaches coming to the NFL refs next season, especially since it's such a dumb rule that doesn't really serve a purpose beyond fucking over the team trying to score. And I don't blame the refs on that one. It was the right call according to the rulebook. But it definitely is a rule that has no right to exist.
will never be changed. you only have to break the goal line to score a TD so it makes sense if you fumble the ball near it and it goes past that line and the other team recovers then you are shit out of luck and deserve to come away with zero points. tell Higgins to protect the ball next time instead of trying to turn a great catch into something more when it wasn't do or die with that lone play. go down inside the 5 and it's first and goal for Browns.
@@davidsnyder6527 OMG right...his odds of getting in for the TD were slim...he could have just went out of bounds and the Browns probably score on the next play anyway..he tried to be a hero at a time when it wasnt needed
Dez's "catch" was almost as technical as it gets, 2 feet + a third that secures possession, made a football move (him diving) this also secures possession. The ball never touched the ground, his arm was underneath it. Idk how this isn't a catch
He definitely caught it. But I always thought of it as karma for the PI call that got picked up against detroit just the round prior.
If karma is the reason then we can carousel around the league for decades and say well all bad calls are karma for another...The Cowboys got karma for the Detroit game. The Saints got karma for trying to maim and hospitalize Brett Favre and on and on we go....
