    clip 1 - "The Haircut"
    This is a clip from the 1990/1991 television film, WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? starring real-life sisters Lynn & Vanessa Redgrave. It has been mostly forgotten due to the many negative comparisons of it to the original film starring Bette Davis & Joan Crawford. This film was not just a remake, but a retelling of the story. The emotions and events are very different and I believe this film is as great as the original. Lynn Redgrave's portrayal of Jane Hudson is phenomenal, as you will see from these clips. I wanted to post these in memory of her - she just passed away this week and there was nothing here on RUclips of her great performance as Baby Jane Hudson. RIP Lynn.......8 March 1943 2 May 2010

      That's your opinion as a fan. As someone who isn't a fan of Davis/Crawford and the Redgrave sisters, I think the Redgrave sisters did a better job than the first two.

    I liked BOTH versions! Appreciating them both is so much a better experience than opting out in cultish support of one over the other. Clearly there's more than one way to deservingly portray a WINNING STORY in film! Crawford's and Davis's mutual HATE captivates the audience, via blunt force trauma of their acting abilities. The Redgraves' egoless LOVE of acting shines through refreshingly in their brilliant performances. Hate or love, trained actors use their energies to better the larger work.

    It's a different take on the same material, that's all. That's like saying no one should've ever made a movie of 'Hamlet' after Lawrence Olivier. Get a frikkin' grip. I don't understand the immature need to relegate everything to a competition. Not everything is based on dividing them into opposing teams.

    the two versions are indeed very different and can be enjoyed on different levels of tragedy----you last sentence especially defines this movie very well. I think you feel the tragedy here more as the characters are more sympathtic and drawn with lighter brush strokes.

    @MartiniShelby EXACTLY! The depth of emotion in this version is what makes this my favorite. Yes, the original worked very well as a horror film. It's very dark and twisted. And the knowledge of the HATE between Davis & Crawford adds to the tension. But the Redgrave sisters ARE these characters for this film. They are so much more believable and natural, due to the emotion they put into it.

    Problem is these two people are just TOO NICE to play these parts. Crawford was a rotten person in many respects and Davis wasn't much better in certain aspects of her life. That's what made the chemistry so good. I can understand Lynn and Vanessa Redgrave wanting to play the parts because their sisters in real life just like the characters. But Lynn was to gentle a person to play such a mixed up person. The ending to this version is disturbing however.

    @jdoesmith85210 I believe it was remade by the son of the original director. It features real-life sisters, as well as setting the story in modern day AND in color, which is welcome to younger viewers. I think the psychological development of the characters is much greater as well in this version. I think of it much more as a revisioning, instead of a flat-out remake.

    Look folks. The whole reason to watch a movie like "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" is to see two actresses battle it out in a Grand Guignol frightfest. No offense to those who like the "complex sister relationship" but if I want to watch that, I'll tune in to Dr. Phil! Come on! Bette and Joan are fantastic. Let's remake "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" with real life cousins.....Yuck.

  • @alpuretim
    @alpuretim 12 лет назад +3

    I WANT to like this one. I can see, through the acting, that potentially this would have more depth and be more fun to explore HOWEVER and I say this as a Brit, the American accents are AWESOME. I'm shocked. I mean, why not just make them British sisters, I find Vanessa Redgrave's American accent particularly distracting. Awful accents. The fact she looked in the mirror accidently before pretending to see her hair for 'the first time' was another blunder.

  • @Handiman544
    @Handiman544 13 лет назад

    I do think this version has a more "natural" flow and is far more believable than the 62 version. Each version; however, brings a different perspective and point of view. Bette and Joan were more macabre. These two are more natural and you see the evolution and purpose behind their relationship more clearly

  • @mmjhcb

    Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. Is the tele-movie available in it's entirety? I remember seeing it when it originally aired and being disappointed because I was expecting just a retread of the old movie (which I love). But seeing this clip makes me appreciate the movie on it's own merits and makes me want to see the whole thing.

    I'm usually the 1st to shout out about re-makes of 'classics',but on this occasion I'd have to say that this does not come across as being a re-make in the usual sense. The Redgraves aren't particularly my favourite acting family,I happen to think they're all somewhat over-rated,but that's just me.However,in this coupling of Lynne & Vanessa I believe they 'acted their socks' off.Their often fiery relationship in 'real life' is evident in this film,which just adds to it's quality!

  • @ozboy39
    @ozboy39 13 лет назад +1

    they should always leave the classics alone- why try to redo a master piece?

  • @caitianlong
    @caitianlong 13 лет назад

    @Grinnygog1975 The choice of adapting the story to the present-day and in the medium of color film is indeed admirable, but to retain Davis' trademark thin-as-pancake make-up for Baby Jane's character is what keeps putting me off. Indeed the relationship, the intimacy, and the depth is explored quite well, and Vanessa's Blanche even bares some fangs in this scene (which can either upset the "surprise" twist revelation or perhaps build up to it, I haven't seen this version in its entirety).

  • @christianealshut1123
    @christianealshut1123 4 года назад

    I see the good acting, but this version lacks one thing as compared with the Crawford/Davis version - you don't buy the background knowledge about the two leads being enemies as part of the story, because there is no such story to sell. I guess they wanted to capitalize on this being played by real-life sisters but it does not have this "psychobiddy" feel to it that the older version has. At the end of the Davis/Crawford version, though, one of them says "You mean all of this time we could have been friends?" and in retrospective we see how the father poisoned the relationship of the sisters by exclusively focusing on Jane and dramatizing their "Daddy's darling" relationship on stage. And how the mother compounded it by suggesting that one day Blanche's time would come, which Blanche then used for payback. This version actually makes it believable that there is genuine affection between the sisters; we do not see anything of that in the Crawford/Davis version which I think was in many ways an exploitation piece.

    In the original, the acting felt real due to the feud between Bette and Joan and they are both excellent well-known actresses.
    Here, I see none of that and we don't know who's the actresses.
    So it is better to win the Oscar-nominated original instead of this.
