The most obscure in-joke with this movie was in the usage of cinematographer Ernest Haller (seen in this video). He was both Bette Davis AND Joan Crawford's prime cameraman when both were at Warner Bros., shooting, amongst others, JEZEBEL and DARK VICTORY with Bette, and MILDRED PIERCE and HUMORESQUE with Joan. He's best known as the DP on GONE WITH THE WIND.
I'm late to the party, but I'm watching it now! Lange is FLAWLESS as Crawford, and honestly now looking at older footage of Davis I'm surprised by how much Sarandon looks like Bette.
I have watched that film around 4 times. Thank U very much for this behind the scene of "Qué pasó con Baby Jane?". That car is a 1947 Lincoln Continental. Greatest film ever!
@@IanP1963 Joan went out of her way to all the actresses nominated and asked them if she could accept the award in case they couldn't make it . She was a ruthless SOB.
I never liked Crawford, but she should have been nominated too. Her performance was so restrained and even her expressions and movements are brilliant. Despite her circumstances, you still find it difficult to sympathize with her, and in the end, we learn why she didn't deserve our sympathy.
George Robbins She should have been nominated, especially her scene at the beach where she gives her dying confession to Jane. It would have been great if Crawford was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Joan was often overlooked. Just look at all the pictures at Metro where they threw their blocks of votes to Shearer and Garbo while the profits from Crawford’s films paid for the pictures of both. Outrageous.
Just saw this movie at a little art house theater last night. What a great night watching it with a crowd of other lovers of this amazing film. Bette Never ceases to amaze me in this role, how she brought so much into creating this incredible character operating on pure spite and so sinister. She deserved that Oscar. When Joan Crawford died, Bette Davis said; "One should never say anything bad about the dead. So i will say this. Joan Crawford is dead. Good."

Did the writers of the script for this behind the scenes documentary not know the name of Maidie Norman? All of the other principal actors who were shown on set were identified by name-- the stars, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, of course, as well as actors Anna Lee and Victor Buono.
@Humble Harry I hope others will read this thread acknowledging the actress, Maidie Ruth Norman, who added excitement and desperate hope to this thrilling film 👍👍👍. It baffles the mind that she is not mentioned🤦♀️. Thank you for acknowledging her terrific input 👍.
Thank you so much for that! I love Anna Lee, but she was just shown for a second…rehearsing with Victor Buono? They had no scenes together as I recall…maybe it was cut. Madie Norman was Wonderful in this film playing an important role beautifully, and I agree, deserves more credit! Marjorie Bennett was a delight as Buono’s mother. Bobs Watson who cried heartbreakingly as a boy in On Borrowed Time and played the iconic role of lovable tragic Peewee in Boy’s Town appears in “…Baby Jane” as the newspaper man who helps Jane place an add seeking a piano accompanist for her act!
I always thought this masterpiece has one major flaw ... why Blanche didn't just call down to the neighbor for HELP~! So silly really, and it made no sense. I'm too young to have seen it in the theaters, but I always imagine the audience chanting "Call for help!".
Claretta Orr That’s good to know, although personally I prefer the book. It takes me lightyears to read it as every sentence I have to google the people or locations it mentions to get a good idea of what went on. It really ignites the imagination and is a truly fascinating insight into that golden era. The money that Bette & Joan were paid even back then was a lot to today’s average standards. Have you read it? I’d thoroughly recommend it!
This is why I like TCM so much for all the classic old movies that had great story lines without gratuitous cussing and sex which that's all you see in the crap you see nowadays. Not all movies, of course, but most are filled with junk and bad acting.
Daddy bought that house for Jane. It wasn't those B rated movies of Blanche so that's why she ain't ever gonna leave it unless they end at the Beach. I wonder how the billing was. It does not say AND which would then make it look like Davis first then Crawford but it shows up at the same time with Davis on the left which in English, people read left to right vs how it is in other nations. I wonder what Joan was thinking about the billing. Two major Stars of their given times yet over age 40 which back then meant career over so they were taking these horror parts yet the two disliked each other. I give them credit for filming. It was actually a good film. A cult classic in a way. A horror but also comedy as we of today would see it. I look for other things like the acting as well as camera zooming in or out etc & am curious of what parts were cut to never be seen. Thanks for uploading this interesting video. Five Stars for the upload.
Love the movie, but instead of writing a note, crumpling it up and throwing it out her window to her nosey neighbor cutting flowers in her garden, she should have screamed, "HELP! HELP! MY CRAZY BITCH SISTER IS FEEDING ME PARAKEETS AND RATS! CALL 911!!!
