Back in the day where movie stars and performers didn’t need publicists.. they had class and knew how to present themselves. But on the other hand the media back in the day weren’t so desperate for drama to make a story that they would twist things….
It was a totally different time! I honestly think I was born in the wrong era.

The older I've gotten, the more I've read, heard and observed; I now think that Christina was full of 🐂💩. I think it was a pathetic and petulant attempt for attention and fast money. I believe that Ms. Crawford was probably a stern and firm but loving mother. I believe Christina and Christopher were just butt-hurt over being financially omitted from Ms. Crawford's Will.

Joan’s eyes give her away. She holds on to her dignity so tightly and is vulnerable to an implied insult. Before the interviewer starts asking questions you can see the fear in her eyes. She seemed to fear the unknown, she wasn’t sure what was going to be asked, how she would come off. Once she hears that he sat through repeated showings of one of her moves ,she knew he was a fan, that she was in a safe space. The woman Christina her adopted daughter describes is not found here, not a trace. She has such dignity. A true legend. I agree with her the world needs Romance when they go to the movies.

Very admirable how she lived in the NOW and never thinks back of the past. A lot of us wish we could do that. She is an inspiration. What a class act. You can tell she took every single role she played, seriously. I loved how she spoke of rehersing “too much” as if one might lose that initial realness of the reactions on film. What an absolute perfections she was, and you clearly can see and feel that in her films. Her poise and praise for the newest starlets was inspiring and ones of today should take note before they “shade” their fellow peers. Her honestly is so appreciated. Not to mention her eyeliner was perfection! Thank you for sharing this fascinating interview.

I understand EXACTLY & PRECISELY what she means when she's caught herself doing or playing something that's "herself" and NOT totally in service to the character. An audience might not notice it, A Director might not even catch it, but the Actor ALWAYS does. I like how she intellectualized and contextualized that. And people might give me some crap for this, so I digress: she and Bette Davis were perfect "bookends" to each other during their competitive days in Hollywood. They actually complemented each other BECAUSE of their differences and juxtapositions. I always felt they understood and (if not respected) at least tolerated each other. In Baby Jane I always felt that undercurrent of actual respect that the two actresses had for each other because they each recognized their shared struggle in Hollywood.

Never saw Joan Crawford interviewed. She seemed pleasant enough, smart and likable. Much of what her adoptive daughter wrote about her in Mommy Dearest has been refuted by two of the siblings and people who personally knew Joan Crawford.

I was really surprised at how she has such a gentle spirit. Smiling, looking you straight in your eyes, polite, saying thank you…amazingly talented. I guess I watched so many of her scary movies I really didn’t know how sweet she could be. I was very touched with her softness as a woman, while being so successful. She could be very tough when she needed to be.

The average person was much more educated than the average person of today. They were literate and articulate with the ability to think.

Well- she mentions only having a fifth grade education, and having to look up words from her scripts in the dictionary. I’d say that more impressive than her literacy skills is her grit, because the truth is she was much less educated than the average person of today, but she did not see this as a barrier that couldn’t be overcome. It’s honestly inspiring.

@@soccermommyNPC I understood she only had a fifth grade education, which makes my point. The average person graduating from many U.S. High Schools today would not be able to compete with the literacy of a fifth grader of that generation. I guess we have different definitions of the concept of basic "education." My definition is reading, writing and verbal articulatenes. The ability to effectively communicate.

We only think she was a terrible mother because of Christina’s book and the nasty movie.
The truth is she had twin daughters also…. And they were very close to her and treated her with respect. Joan left her fortune to them because they always showed her love and respect, as a mother deserves.
The twin daughters swear she was a delightful and kind mother. And swear Christina was a liar.

Joan Crawford made some fantastic movies, they really do not make them like this anymore, can watch and enjoy time and time again. Films made today lack so much of everything that made these movies so memorable.
