And one can only hope that the next generation appreciates the impact of their predecessors. There’s no way younger people can understand something that happened decades before they were born. A different world that they grew up in, the aftermath of these pivotal moments. Me included! I have no understanding of what it was like to grow up during the great depression or WWII. I’m a baby of the 70’s. But I appreciate the journey of those before me because I listened to their stories.
I was in high school for some of those guest host duties and my friends and I would get together to watch her monologues. I liked Johnny Carson but Joan did such great crowd work, and rapid fire jokes.

I worked with Joan for 12 years. You miss the glamour, the excitement, the crowds, the defiance, the wages. More, you miss the friend who valued the gift of intimacy, and gave it. Most of all, you miss the person who, out of all on earth, most and loudest made you laugh. We fenced jokes, like this. (Invariably, she'd win: of course she did. ) I never imagined she could have had an equal. But now I do. Betty White! The speed, the dexterity, the parry and the lunge! Mesmeric, and heartbreaking.

Joan's comedy often went over my head when I was a young man, but watching reruns and new performances makes me realize that she was more clever and creative than Carson and less boring than Letterman. She didn't have to appear on TV every night, but when she guest hosted or appeared, she was a barrage of jokes--much like Robin Williams.
@@swingersonian You're right. There was a reason Carson chose her to do more hosting on his show than any other and Joan should have succeeded Johnny, not Leno. Leno was pretty good, but not as good as Joan. There is no telling how much better the Tonight Show would have been. I think it would have been epic.
Comparing them, though, is apples and oranges. Joan was a comedian. Truly. She did stand-up. Betty White, whom I adored, was just a funny lady. Big difference. Both were great. Betty held a special place in my heart because she did so much for animals. They were her first love, I think, as they are mine. Doris Day was another, who adored animals. She died in May of 2019. Two great ladies for animals. Such a loss. Doris Day was another funny lady. She did a lot of movies in the 60s. Some with Rock Hudson. They were so funny.

Betty White gave Rue McClanahan (Blanche) a lovely compliment when discussing the character of Blanche in The Golden Girls "Rue took her into orbit a place I never would have gone". Betty was initially thought to play Blanche. Those two ladies were wonderful.
You can see how much Joan loves to laugh and loves to make others laugh. I love her voice! And Betty is very sweet but a real bruiser with her comedic jabs! Great stuff!

Those two ladies were blessed with great minds, a great comedic timing. Just a joy to watch & listen to. Betty White's facial expressions in the Golden Girls were priceless. She could do confused, embarrassed & surprised in a matter of split seconds when playing Rose Nyland. Joan was sharp, sharp, sharp. She learned of famous people in all of the English speaking countries she visited, who's in & who's out. She never missed a trick. She made you laugh whether you were in the UK or New Zealand, what a fabulous fantastic brain.
Betty White was evil to the core. She drank adrenochrome that's how she lived so long. Be careful who you idolize Hollywood is filled with demons that are evil as hell. these 2 are both transgenders just like most of Hollywood is. They were born male. shut off your tv's and do some research.

Some of her greatest lines were delivered with an absolutely rock-solid straight face, leaving her co-stars in stitches. Pure genius. How lucky we are to have been so entertained. imo The all around best two person interviews where both the host and the guest fed off each others talent and wit were CRAIG FERGUSON interviewing ROBIN WILLIAMS If you haven't yet watched those shows (The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson) I highly recommend you do. 😄😄😄😄
Maybe not. Betty White is probably busy with Allen Luddin (spelling???) while Rivers is off behind a group of angels whispering mean sarcasms and gossiping trying to start a rumor about Gabriel.
My god this is amazing. Two absolute icons with so much natural comedic chemistry just feeding off of each other’s energy. All I can do is smile and giggle like a school girl. I miss them both so much.
So many mixed emotions watching this. We have lost the great ones and we have lost the great times. Having all these magnificent people on tv was the best times of our lives!
This is a prime example of a master of her craft. Betty was 60 when this interview took place and she has the sharp, quick wit of a person a quarter of her age.

2 of the most genuinely honest and open icons of the entire entertainment world and can rip on each other like 2 sailors at the end of a trip across the cold blue seas yet still show the love and respect for each other like 2 sisters with a bond that couldn't be broken with all the fight of raging bulls. @@DDumbrille almost all humans have elements of self deception. Even you. Even me...though I've worked at mining my own psyche for sure. She was often very honest about her struggles and insecurities. Many people cannot admit those. All you can do is be radically honest with yourself. If it's so important to call others out for it. Dig down beyond all the defenses, the illusions, the ego protections, the cognitive distortions and the biases...it's a warriors job. To be that wholly brave to look at oneself, unedited, holding space, and fully accepting...that is very, very rare. It's too scary a proposition for most. Your statement incredibly shared something about you. That you must be pretty hard on yourself, and project it outwards...that you likely have an unaddressed core wound of shame. We can not have empathy if we see ourselves and others through a lens of shame...therefore we readily try to shame others, simply for being human. I hope you can heal.

Perhaps I was projecting that forward, but I still say that Rivers was full of self-hatred which SHE projected on everyone. Unlike Don Rickles, who would always end his bits by acknowledging he's just kidding, that these are jokes, etc., Rivers never did that. In the documentary that followed her around -- she bitched about 'having to' play vegas, or play some small town -- when it was HER CHOICE to do so. She could've retired 10-15 years before her death, but kept going back for the 'love' of applause. Very sad. Hopefully others (including myself) have learned lessons from her sad life.
@@DDumbrille my heart goes out to you. Being a human can, at times, be a tough endeavor. I too agree that Rivers seemed to have so much self loathing. It's heartbreaking. We abuse ourselves more than almost anyone else does.. her dismissing her own value, invalidating herself through various means...especially the self mutilation and suffering, of cosmetic surgeries. That screams "I'm not enough". If she'd loved, valued, honored herself, had her own back...she would never have decided to do all that. It's sad when people buy into the lies of society, their definitions of beauty, value etc. If each human thought they were enough, didn't live in shame...there would be no market for cosmetics, elective plastic surgery, and a plethora of other services/products, we are sold. Advertisers prey on humans need to belong...by targeting their weakness. Suggesting that if we alter things we might be loved, adored, validated, etc. Accepting oneself is the protection against it all. Takes work, but it's possible 💛
This was such an incredible interview. It was so shocking to me to find an interview from the early 80s where these two women could be so raunchy (yet hilarious) on television and I loved every minute of it!!!
40 years and 4 days ago, as I write this....Betty and Joan were two of the very best! So quick, clever and, of course, funny needling each other. A couple of the barbs were so sharp and smoothly delivered the audience missed them. RIP to these 2 greats...
The 80's were awesome compared to today. I was a high school senior when this aired. The future, at the time, only looked bright. Like the song of the day said "the future's so bright I gotta wear shades." Who would have thought what MY generation inherited we would ruin in just 20 short years.

His "trickle down economics" was the beginning of the loss of our middle class and his illegal wars destroyed Latin America. The Reagan/Bush administration was the most corrupt in American history.

When Bill Clinton took office he also sold Americans jobs away with NAFTA & deregulated banks by repealing with the Glass Steagall Act of 1999. Wave goodbye. He did balance the budget that way, but Bush Jr. spent it immediately after stealing the election, by sending all Americans a $300. check his first 3 months in office. That depleted all the cash on hand; so when he took us to war, there was no $ or plan to pay for it. They just keep printing cash for perpetual wars and giving our money to rich corporations or lobbies and definitely the war machine. The most important thing your generation did was to stage the Occupy Wall St protests. Other than that, I've seen nothing but apathy.

The 'thousand points of light' speech was what he gave at the GOP convention when he was nominated for president. But, like you, I can't STAND any of the Bush family. And even though I'm a republican, I never voted for one. Reagan, on the other hand, was AWESOME! Reagan restored pride back in America after the turbulence and upheavals of the late 1960's (kind of like we are going through now) and the Nixon years. He made us the envy of the world and put the crack in the wall that brought down the Soviet Union. He restored pride in being an American. The 'occupy Wall Street' movement was the millennials. Hardly MY generation as I'm a boomer! (although just barely). But you're right about Clinton and Bush junior. And what were THEY? Yep! BOOMERS! I saw the downfall begin in the mid 1990's. The younger boomers and gen xers made it worse. We currently run the country. But I was more referring to social and moral attitudes rather than economic. Long gone are the values of the lost, greatest and silent generations. My generation and the one below mine can best be described as greedy, self centered, apathetic (YOU called THAT one) and totally devoid of empathy if it doesn't involve one of their own. As for personal habits, long gone is patriotism. And great ladies like Betty White are fast becoming a thing of the past as they are replaced by foul mouthed karens in stretch pants, tee/sweat shirts, hair like rats nests, no makeup and both men AND women looking like they just stepped off an 8 hour shift on a garbage truck. No one knows their neighbors anymore it seems. Or helps them in time of need. The attitude of the generations that went though the depression and World War II of 'we're all in it together' was replaced by the "ME" generations of the 1990's. And when personal appearance/pride goes down the crapper, so does work and the economy.
There are very few people out there who have the quality that makes them look wonderful and shine a light on anyone with them, too. Betty White definitely had it. It sounds a bit rude to say she makes Joan look even better, but their beauty, charm, wit and humour shines so much brighter with them together because Betty just has that quality.
Joan looked especially beautiful...her hair is gorgeous. Betty.....well, Betty is just herself...a natural down-to-earth beauty! Great icons who are truly missed!
Her Allen had only been gone for a year at this point. She had 40 more years to live! What a beautiful and strong woman. This was a year before Mama's Family, and 3 years before Golden Girls. The game show she's promoting here won her one of her Emmys.

She should have told him, I signed a contract with Fox to have my own show ! Then there wouldn't have been such a big deal by hiding this fact from him she hurt his feelings immensely !! Carson's Egp was always contained and never fragile or even flagrant. He was very respectful to all people, especially the common and senior citizens. I just double-checked the date that was posted here. It's funny that she is so bright and cheery, Joan teasing Betty about her show and getting back into "the market" (Dating Scene). As some would know already, Betty's husband, Allan, had passed away less than 2 years before (1980-1981). She had been married to him for 20 years. She never did remarry in her remaining 40 years but you wouldn't have known she was a widow. Simply remarkable and inspiring. #RIPBettyWhite #RIPJoanRivers #legends
Awe these women were just adorable, it's very bittersweet to watch this, so full of life and I'm in awe of Betty, her resilience to keep going is truly inspiring - she'd only lost her husband Allan less than a year before this was aired, she could keep it together and with such humility, kindness and dignity. @1:17 Never noticed a comedic similarity until now, but right here, Betty reminded me so much of Norm Macdonald. The way she says "let's straighten up and fly right" and acts like she's about to get serious, but then goes off on some crazy, silly story. Feel like I've watched Norm do that so many times.

I'm so grateful to have met both, and they were just as funny and sincere as you would have expected. I met Betty at her book signing of her memoirs, at Beverly Center (back when there was a bookstore... think it was B Dalton's?). She was pleasant and friendly. Still have the book in my bookcase, signed to me and my 2 former cats! 🤗😻😻 I met Joan at Spago, on the Sunset Strip, after celebrating my "graduation from college" dinner. She was with her husband Edgar and another couple. Was nervous, but told her I enjoyed watching her late night show. Also told her had tickets to see the show in a couple of weeks. She gave me name of contact once I went there. Long story short... was able to get 2nd row aisle seat about 10 feet from her, when she did her monolog with the audience. I also was on TV just above her shoulder, as the camera turned towards the audience! Next day had about 1/2 dozen people say they saw me on TV! 😎🤣 Then few years later I went to an open house in Bel Air, that turned out to be Joan & Edgar's mansion, where Melissa grew up! Later was purchased by Janet Jackson! When Joan passed, it hit me hard, as I truly felt I had a personal connection with her, and when Betty passed, it felt like losing my grandmother again! I miss both of them! 😢

My grandmother (God rest her soul) raised St. Bernards, was friends with Betty back in the early-mid 1960s. Such great women. I remember Doris Day going to animal rescues when I was a teen. Both missed :-(

Betty White gave Rue McClanahan (Blanche) a lovely compliment when discussing the character of Blanche in The Golden Girls "Rue took her into orbit a place I never would have gone". Betty was initially thought to play Blanche. Those two ladies were wonderful.
Growing up I remember Betty as Sue Ann on the Mary Tyler Moore show and from Match Game...iconic TV shows and she killed it on both of them.
You can see how much Joan loves to laugh and loves to make others laugh. I love her voice! And Betty is very sweet but a real bruiser with her comedic jabs! Great stuff!

Those two ladies were blessed with great minds, a great comedic timing. Just a joy to watch & listen to. Betty White's facial expressions in the Golden Girls were priceless. She could do confused, embarrassed & surprised in a matter of split seconds when playing Rose Nyland. Joan was sharp, sharp, sharp. She learned of famous people in all of the English speaking countries she visited, who's in & who's out. She never missed a trick. She made you laugh whether you were in the UK or New Zealand, what a fabulous fantastic brain.
Betty White was evil to the core. She drank adrenochrome that's how she lived so long. Be careful who you idolize Hollywood is filled with demons that are evil as hell. these 2 are both transgenders just like most of Hollywood is. They were born male. shut off your tv's and do some research.

Some of her greatest lines were delivered with an absolutely rock-solid straight face, leaving her co-stars in stitches. Pure genius. How lucky we are to have been so entertained. And she spoke, beautifully, for the women's movement, without ever losing her comedic edge! Wonderful woman. And she was very happily married to Allen Ludden as was he to her!

This is a prime example of a master of her craft. Betty was 60 when this interview took place and she has the sharp, quick wit of a person a quarter of her age.

She was often very honest about her struggles and insecurities. Many people cannot admit those.
All you can do is be radically honest with yourself. If it's so important to call others out for it.
Dig down beyond all the defenses, the illusions, the ego protections, the cognitive distortions and the biases...it's a warriors job. To be that wholly brave to look at oneself, unedited, holding space, and fully accepting...that is very, very rare.
It's too scary a proposition for most.
Your statement incredibly shared something about you. That you must be pretty hard on yourself, and project it outwards...that you likely have an unaddressed core wound of shame.
We can not have empathy if we see ourselves and others through a lens of shame...therefore we readily try to shame others, simply for being human.

Perhaps I was projecting that forward, but I still say that Rivers was full of self-hatred which SHE projected on everyone. Unlike Don Rickles, who would always end his bits by acknowledging he's just kidding, that these are jokes, etc., Rivers never did that. In the documentary that followed her around -- she bitched about 'having to' play vegas, or play some small town -- when it was HER CHOICE to do so. She could've retired 10-15 years before her death, but kept going back for the 'love' of applause. Very sad. Hopefully others (including myself) have learned lessons from her sad life.

I too agree that Rivers seemed to have so much self loathing. It's heartbreaking. We abuse ourselves more than almost anyone else does.. her dismissing her own value, invalidating herself through various means...especially the self mutilation and suffering, of cosmetic surgeries. That screams "I'm not enough". If she'd loved, valued, honored herself, had her own back...she would never have decided to do all that. It's sad when people buy into the lies of society, their definitions of beauty, value etc.
If each human thought they were enough, didn't live in shame...there would be no market for cosmetics, elective plastic surgery, and a plethora of other services/products, we are sold. Advertisers prey on humans need to belong...by targeting their weakness. Suggesting that if we alter things we might be loved, adored, validated, etc.
Accepting oneself is the protection against it all. Takes work, but it's possible 💛
This was such an incredible interview. It was so shocking to me to find an interview from the early 80s where these two women could be so raunchy (yet hilarious) on television and I loved every minute of it!!!

The 80's were awesome compared to today. I was a high school senior when this aired. The future, at the time, only looked bright. Like the song of the day said "the future's so bright I gotta wear shades." Who would have thought what MY generation inherited we would ruin in just 20 short years.

His "trickle down economics" was the beginning of the loss of our middle class and his illegal wars destroyed Latin America. The Reagan/Bush administration was the most corrupt in American history.

The Bush crime family is responsible for much of the terrorism that happened in this country. When Bill Clinton took office he also sold Americans jobs away with NAFTA & deregulated banks by repealing with the Glass Steagall Act of 1999. Wave goodbye. He did balance the budget that way, but Bush Jr. spent it immediately after stealing the election, by sending all Americans a $300. check his first 3 months in office. That depleted all the cash on hand; so when he took us to war, there was no $ or plan to pay for it. They just keep printing cash for perpetual wars and giving our money to rich corporations or lobbies and definitely the war machine. The most important thing your generation did was to stage the Occupy Wall St protests. Other than that, I've seen nothing but apathy.
@@anael55 I think you have your speeches confused. Bush actually said "new world order" not one world government and it was said during a joint session of Congress after the start of the Gulf War. The 'thousand points of light' speech was what he gave at the GOP convention when he was nominated for president. But, like you, I can't STAND any of the Bush family. And even though I'm a republican, I never voted for one. Reagan, on the other hand, was AWESOME! Reagan restored pride back in America after the turbulence and upheavals of the late 1960's (kind of like we are going through now) and the Nixon years. He made us the envy of the world and put the crack in the wall that brought down the Soviet Union. He restored pride in being an American. The 'occupy Wall Street' movement was the millennials. Hardly MY generation as I'm a boomer! (although just barely).
But you're right about Clinton and Bush junior. And what were THEY? Yep! BOOMERS! I saw the downfall begin in the mid 1990's. The younger boomers and gen xers made it worse. We currently run the country.
But I was more referring to social and moral attitudes rather than economic. Long gone are the values of the lost, greatest and silent generations. My generation and the one below mine can best be described as greedy, self centered, apathetic (YOU called THAT one) and totally devoid of empathy if it doesn't involve one of their own. As for personal habits, long gone is patriotism. And great ladies like Betty White are fast becoming a thing of the past as they are replaced by foul mouthed karens in stretch pants, tee/sweat shirts, hair like rats nests, no makeup and both men AND women looking like they just stepped off an 8 hour shift on a garbage truck. No one knows their neighbors anymore it seems. Or helps them in time of need. The attitude of the generations that went though the depression and World War II of 'we're all in it together' was replaced by the "ME" generations of the 1990's. And when personal appearance/pride goes down the crapper, so does work and the economy.
This was almost 12 minutes long, late night guests now might have two or three minutes interview time. Betty and Joan were classics in their field.
Joan was always a great fill in for Johnny!! And Betty can make anyone look good!! She’s so damn funny and sweet!

There are very few people out there who have the quality that makes them look wonderful and shine a light on anyone with them, too. Betty White definitely had it. It sounds a bit rude to say she makes Joan look even better, but their beauty, charm, wit and humour shines so much brighter with them together because Betty just has that quality.

She should have told him, I signed a contract with Fox to have my own show ! Then there wouldn't have been such a big deal by hiding this fact from him she hurt his feelings immensely !!
Carson's Egp was always contained and never fragile or even flagrant. He was very respectful to all people, especially the common and senior citizens. I really admire that !! 💓
We all make mistakes, and Joan did a doozy ! Yet, she has The Gift of Gab and she was well loved on her day talk show. She's a very sensitive & kind human being, as was Johnny.

I just double-checked the date that was posted here. It's funny that she is so bright and cheery, Joan teasing Betty about her show and getting back into "the market" (Dating Scene). As some would know already, Betty's husband, Allan, had passed away less than 2 years before (1980-1981). She had been married to him for 20 years. She never did remarry in her remaining 40 years but you wouldn't have known she was a widow. Simply remarkable and inspiring. #RIPBettyWhite #RIPJoanRivers #legends

The way she says "let's straighten up and fly right" and acts like she's about to get serious, but then goes off on some crazy, silly story. Feel like I've watched Norm do that so many times.

I met Betty at her book signing of her memoirs, at Beverly Center (back when there was a bookstore... think it was B Dalton's?). She was pleasant and friendly. Still have the book in my bookcase, signed to me and my 2 former cats!

I met Joan at Spago, on the Sunset Strip, after celebrating my "graduation from college" dinner. She was with her husband Edgar and another couple. Was nervous, but told her I enjoyed watching her late night show. Also told her had tickets to see the show in a couple of weeks. She gave me name of contact once I went there. Long story short... was able to get 2nd row aisle seat about 10 feet from her, when she did her monolog with the audience. I also was on TV just above her shoulder, as the camera turned towards the audience! Next day had about 1/2 dozen people say they saw me on TV! 😎🤣
Then few years later I went to an open house in Bel Air, that turned out to be Joan & Edgar's mansion, where Melissa grew up! Later was purchased by Janet Jackson!
When Joan passed, it hit me hard, as I truly felt I had a personal connection with her, and when Betty passed, it felt like losing my grandmother again!
I miss both of them! 😢
