I assume that Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean Mortensen) had bipolar disorder, changing the mood from very happy to very deep depressed. In a deep depression episode patients can't move out, a lot of anxiety against people until they recover. In a very deep depression episode they can commit suicide. Bipolar patients should not stay alone a long time or should have pets, so have an animal to care for! Sometimes for patients with bipolar disorder other human confrontation could be very painfull for them!
I could listen to Shelly for hours. She is very intelligent, analytical and so real. I'm sorry Marilyn had to be so alone.

What I love about Shelly Winters is she is so open and down to earth. I also love that she grew old gracefully. She knew she was very beautiful back in the day, but she looks fine here. She is like an Aunt. I wouldn't mind sitting down with her and talking. She is fun. Honest.

Omg so very true. I miss my 31 yr.old son who died 18 months ago and have been in a bad way. If/when I go out and there re many many people there I am so alone. It is truly the worst feeling. Still feel this way. I think of MM's deeply sad upbringing and her early demise. As Shelley said she was more of a cover model maybe should have stayed that way and was anxious in front of the camera. A puppet for so many to manipulate people in Hollywood
This was so much better than the version with Jane Russell. Shelley Winters had such a deeper understanding of Marilyn Monroe and shows a great deal more compassion for her. She just knew her better.

@Jason Strom I don't get that vibe at all. I find Shelley Winters is being honest and sensitive to who Marilyn truly was. I agree with her that Marilyn could not have played older characters parts. As Shelley said, Marilyn had very poor self-esteem and what self-esteem she had came from being beautiful and desirable to ALL men. At 36, Marilyn was already in a panic about her looks; her face, her wrinkles, her breasts, her weight, her loss of youthfulness. Shelley adored Marilyn. You only have to see photos of her and Marilyn at an awards event, (shown @6:32), to see the true affection that these two talented women had for each other.

I met Shelly's older sister in 1989 and she was a wonderful person very lively and cheerful and spoke highly of Shirley. Very loving and devoted.

A novel thing to hear stories about Marilyn as a person and not just the blonde bombshell. She was, by all intents an intelligent, savvy and talented person. ❤❤

@@tommoclement She had a truly heinous childhood, her Mother had a serious mental illness and was eventually institutionalized, Marilyn was S-xually Assaulted as a child and got pushed into a marriage when she was 16. If she DIDN"T tmake bad choices, it would be surprising.

Will M not abusive I say but while married yes, but after the divorce he stopped the alcohol, went to therapy and they reconnected staying good friends. after her death he sent roses to her grave for 20 years( I read that somewhere). He loved her. Joe didn’t remarry after Marilyn. And last but not really sure if it’s true DiMaggio last words and thoughts were about Marilyn and how he is going to see her again.❤️

MM had a sister, but she lived in Michigan and later down the East Coast. Before their mother died, taken care in a Florida sanatorium to where MM flew to visit her whenever having a week free, her sister moved to Florida to be near her, after her husband died. But MM was already dead by then too. Her sister became the real left alone sister after her 2 siblings died, their brother at 12 and Norma Jeane at 36
Shelley Winters was a great actress. And such a likeable person.

Shelley was an amazing actress and mentor. She taught for many years. I was blessed to be her neighbor in her later years. In fact this was her home, where this interview takes place. I was there many times.

It should also be said that Shelley Winters was one of the most underrated actresses ever.

She played in the movie with Robert Mitchum, Night of the Hunter directed by Charles Laughton. It was terrific. I never saw a movie like that, to bad Charles Laughton never made another film. Film Noir. Excellent. Watch it if you can.

Dne End, I really would not say Shelley Winters was underrated - Hollywood did award her with two Oscars, along with two additional nominations. Back in the early-to-mid1970's (as a young teen), I would be allowed to stay up late (on a "school night") whenever Shelley was scheduled to appear on the Carson show (another legend!) She could be incredibly brilliant and funny in the most off-handed way. One example, which I can still recall and laugh at - Shelley was relating to Johnny that she spent 100,000 dollars (a huge bundle of money then, and a good sum now) on psychiatric help to determine the reason for her attraction to "Latin men." The studio audience grew very quiet, and after a couple of seconds, Johnny asked her if she "ever found out the reason." Shelley, now fixing her dress, said (in her loud voice) "Yes, it was because I LIKED THEM!" Needless to say, the audience roared with laughter. This was no audience laugh against Shelley, the crowd was fully with her. Johnny Carson absolutely loved her and she was a special guest dozens of times over his 30 year run on late-night TV.
Both ladies are/were very smart and Shelly was obviously a very good friend. That's a blessing.

Her story about Marilyn's death is extremely interesting! Everything she says about her is interesting! In just 11 minutes she has told the story of Marilyn Monroe so beautifully detailed and interesting when documentaries and films that are 1:30 hours cannot quite do it. She is wonderful.!

One Sunday morning, long ago, my husband, his son and I went to Schwabs for breakfast. We had to wait in line because it was so busy, and my stepson was really young and bored and wiggling around as kids do, when all of a sudden this woman trips over his foot and starts to fall! I grabbed her arm and her companion grabbed the other so at least she didn't fall all the way to the ground. I kept saying that we were so sorry, that he didn't mean to trip her, etc. and when I started to let go of her arm and saw her face, I saw that it was Shelley Winters!!! I was so embarrassed, but she was so sweet and said not to worry about it. She was so kind and we almost made her fall! Thank you so much for this great compilation, I really enjoyed it :)
Jenny Q: Farley Granger lived for decades in the New York apartment above Shelley's. He said she was his great love (although he was in an out of the closet long term love partnership with the man he lived with...) and if he had ever gone into a straight marriage it would have been with Shelley. He said they were inseparable. They called each other back and forth all day. Farley Granger was a delight. One of our under rated greats.

Just looking at her made me smile. (In those days they didn’t have homophobia in public so it was acceptable for both sexes to be attracted to her without recourse if you know what I mean....I’m old as dirt. Lol
Every time I hear stories about Marilyn I get tears in my eyes. She was so talented and beautiful but was mistreated terribly and had no one to support her. I want to go back in time and give her a big hug.
Elvis and Monroe met only once. He was entering a building and she was leaving. Those spoke a few moments in that lobby of the building and they never saw each other again. Imagine watching that moment take place. It does not get more iconic than that moment.

You obviously don't get the irony. Monroe had smarts, but she also had an image thrust upon her that she was fearful of reversing in her career at that time. She was vulnerable and abused by the studios. I think a good friend would tell like it is.
I've always liked Shelley Winters. Great actress and I trust her judgment on people she seems like a very decent honest person and She was there to tell the story of how things really were in those days...

The movie Poseidon Adventure was her best performance. She did the swimming herself, no double was used.

I really enjoyed Shelley’s two autobiographies, “Shelley: Also Known as Shirley,” and “Shelley II.” For anyone interested in more of her fab stories about Marilyn & other Hollywoodites she knew,I’d recommend reading both. Probably available for cheap in paperback online. One of my fave stories of hers was about how Liz Taylor wasn’t terribly bright; one day, while making the movie “A Place In the Sun,” they were in their room together and Shelley asked Liz what the date was. Liz replied she did ‘t know, and Shelley pointed out that there was a newspaper right next to Liz. To which Liz replied, “Oh, that’s no good. That’s yesterday’s paper!” 😄😄😄

I remember a another story about a young Liz Taylor. All the stars got a per diem. A fellow actor came by to get Liz and she was frantically opening up shopping boxes that had been delivered. When questioned, she blurted out that she wasn't quite done spending her per diem for that day. This actor explained that it would roll over to the next day and accrue. You didn't have to spend the allotment each day.

Shelley really spoke of Marilyn Monroe in the sincerest way like a real friend would. Jeanne Carmen claims she was Marilyn Monroe’s friend but it was only a to get her attention and none of her stories were sincere, let alone true. I love listening to Shelley Winters
When I hear Shelly Winters talk about Marilyn Monroe, it was like I was there too watching them have fun, living life to the fullest, because when they were living together as up and coming actors, dreaming about being famous were their golden and most precious years. They were so young, talented and ambtious, yet vulnerable, beautiful and sensitive and only hoping they'd be happy and fulfilled. It breaks my heart that Marilyn's fate would take a dark path, darker than we could have ever imagined and Shelly Winters would live to tell us all in RUclips. She was the closest one could ever be to Marilyn when she was just a simple girl with huge goals yet unsure of her future. Marilyn was so precious.

in hollywood at that time, 36 was more or less considered 46,56,,, especially for a woman known for her beauty and sex appeal..
You will be surprised that even till this day some people have that mentality that by 30 is over and that you are stop being desirable at the age of 30.

I have known of Ms. Monroe's caring side and support for civil rights, so good to see more of her colleagues discussing this generous and loving side of Marilyn.
Marilyn Monroe is gorgeous!!! Usually women from those days aren’t viewed as gorgeous today but Marilyn Monroe stood the test of time and she’s probably one of them most gorgeous women to ever grace Hollywood
Her look and persona was manufactured by Hollywood just like they all were back then; Bleached hair, a nose and chin job, had her teeth fixed, eventually drugs, and made to act a certain way.
For as beautiful as she was what we see is mostly Hollywood.

The image of her cleaning each lettuce leaf individually because she wanted so desperately to impress that writer she looked up to sticks out to me. Her need for approval that she’d been looking for all her life is what I believe was the death of her. But it created so much magic while she was around, everywhere she went. He had to have felt the love they put into that meal.

I always love the stories Shelley Winters told about Marilyn. One of the very few who said good things about Marilyn, others talked about her as Actress and being late on stage etc. Jane Russell, also said good things about her however did not keep in touch with her after their successful movie (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes).
Shelley said that Mariyln did not have any family, however she did. She found out when she was 12yrs old that she had a sister and a brother (who died at 15) and her sister was I believe 19yrs old. They looked so much alike and you could see what Mariyln would have looked like if she lived to 100yrs old. Maryilyn did keep in contact with her sister and they were finally able to meet up right before she became famous (when she was about 19yrs old). Marilyn, I believe also met her mother too.
I have been crazy about Shelley Winters for what seems like forever. The first person I fell in love with looked a lot like Shelley Winters. She is funny and I could listen to her talk for hours.

Frankly, I would have enjoyed removing her clothes and showering with her.... Brushing teeth & mouth wash before and after the shower... LOL!
Actually, Marilyn got pregnant with Tony Curtis' baby while filming "Some like it Hot". He may have been married at the time, but did NOT want her to have a baby! Maybe he thought it was somebody else's? Who knows? So because she resisted getting an abortion, he disliked her. So there were hard feelings between them. Not many people know about this. Certainly Shelley would not reveal this after her death. So I wouldn't put much into what Tony Curtis' said. He liked trying the goods but didn't want to buy them! So much for him. He was bisexual and didn't want his style cramped. She would not have gone for that. He knew it. In the famous scene with Tony and Lawrence Olivier in Kubrick's 'Spartacus' in the spa (That was really true between them, the tryst) although it wasn't real obvious at the time in the movies. I believe Shelley knew Marilyn in the early days, and they were friends. But later on, Shelley wasn't in Marilyn's league, and she was a bit envious of all her attention. It is not true that Marilyn suicided. She was murdered. Shelley did not extend into Marilyn's life in her later years, but you can see her trying to get alot of attention by talking about what she did know about her. That is not to say that Shelley wasn't a good actress. I am not taking that part away from her. It's just that they did not run in the same circles like the Rat Pack which Marilyn did, add of course her affair with JFK and RFK. I have read MANY books about Marilyn and the unfortunate thing is Marilyn kept a red diary about all her liason's, and that Pres. Jack had told her about UFO's. The CIA was worried that may get out, the mob used her for their " club events" at Frank's Cal Neva resort, and she was tired of being used and abused. She threatened to expose them all, and Peter Lawford (Pat Kennedy's gay husband at the time) managed to convince her psychaiatrist that she would rat on him too, so after the mob tried to shut her up unsuccessfully, Dr. Greenson DID. In front of the EMT going out the door to the ambulance! It was all on audio tape thanks to Hoover from the FBI trying to scandalize the Kennedy's, who had threatened to expose the fact (he was gay). And Mrs. Murray the housekeeper was a spy for Lawford and Dr. Greenson.

I had the pleasure to meet Tony Curtis many times I was his favorite waitress and he used to tip me $100 for one round of drinks . He would tell me fabulous old Hollywood stories and talk about Marilyn . His gf at the time looked like a clone of her . They were awesome

Aw, I love Shelley! I read her auto-biographies (yes, she had two) back in the day, and fully enjoyed them. Always bright, honest, and never at a loss for words - a wonderful woman. When I read her first book, I was delighted to learn that we shared the same birthday - August 18th. Cheers to Shelley Winters, and of course, Marilyn.

Shelley told a great story on herself when she was out hawking her bio. She said she was going down a stairway and passed a man who said, "Hi Shelley." She looked at him and he could tell she didn't recognize him. He said, You don't remember me, do you?" and she said, "No." He said, I'm Tony Franciosa, your third husband."

What beautiful interviews! Shelley told the truth about her and Marilyn! The comparisons of men and being happy for each other! I could picture them, back in the day being just like, "Cagney & Lacey" Sometimes we have to keep our friends close and check on them! Marilyn, should have had someone watching over her! She really had no one! 💔

When i was first seeing Marilyn in film ,on re-runs in the 1970's as a preteen ... i only saw and knew of her dizzy blonde personality ... i really grew to like her , NOW 2019 AT AGE 51, after seeing docu's showing her REAL SIDE ... THE REAL HER!!! Very nice person, thinking , kind ..... but as usual .... evil people took advantage of and USED her. Very sad ... still SMFH !!!! VERY VERY SAD. But i am very glad i grew up first b4 seeing the real HER, as living and learning in life ... i could appreciate her soul ... as it should BE ........ R.I.P BEAUTIFUL. PEACE.
Shelley Winters was quite an interesting woman. I grew up watching her in the Poseidon Adventure, it great to see her interviews. I'm glad that Marilyn had her for a friend.

Loved Shelley winters so much intelligence humour and was very beautiful as a young woman but underrated as an actress I think . She seems kind too and so right from what we read about Marilyn . Both amazing women .
Marilyn Monroe had so many personal issues including abandonment issues which was hard for her to stay alone. She felt in her life she couldn't stay by herself and needed a man to keep her company. It is sad she couldn't be strong by herself because this is how so many men took advantage of her.
When you look back a lot of those that claimed to be friends especially Peter Lawford who pimped Marilyn to Kennedy and then his brother Robert. When they call the "Rat Pack" I believe most of them were "rats" except for Dean and Joey Bishop. The rests were users and vulgar men no matter how professional they seem to be these guys were jerks!
@@angelacarleton9575 Yes I agree but you neglected to state the fact that a noted satanic worshiper in that group was part of Anton LaVey's cult. Lawford and the Kennedy's killed her. The evidence is astounding for murder but even if it was not murder it was them who pushed her to that point. I think she was MUCH stronger than we think or give her credit for and the media has destroyed the true person she was. She survived so much and someone who wants to kill themselves is usually not telling people she is in fear for her life the SAME day she was found died. She would have not cared. She did have people who loved her sadly though she had others who used her and likely estranged those relationships like her current dr/psychiatrist the one who "found" her dead.
