When Rose walks into a room, you know she is going to come ready with one of her famous St. Olaf Story- even if it doesn't necessarily seem like it is going to relate to what is happening- she always comes through at the end with a lesson we didn't know we needed. Rue and Bea broke character laughing so hard during the great herring war story. In an interview Rue said she and Bea looked at each other and finally they couldn't contain themselves and just broke out in laughter. You can see Rue and Bea covering their faces trying to hide their laughs. When Bea asks if they ever shot a herring out of a cannon that was it.

She had her own comedy show back in, um... the '50s, I think? Earlier black-and-white era. She was in comedy for something like 70 years. Such a talent. I don't know if anybody will ever surpass her.

Wasn't there a rumor that, because one angle was just Betty, the other, the other three girls, that, they would shoot the St. Olaf story then film Bea, Rue and Estelle separate, so they didn't have to hear the story...they couldn't keep a straight face or not laugh.

I wonder if we'll ever have a generation of talent like we did with those in the 70s 80s and 90s sitcoms. Larry David is getting up there and I don't watch enough of current tv to know who's up and coming. If comedy is like today's pop music, it seems mediocrity is rewarded instead of being told to practice more or maybe better yet, find another endeavor. The everybody's a winner concept sounded good in theory and it had good intentions, but everybody doesn't deserve a prize. Sorry but that's how I believe.
What amazed me whta that the companions could keep straight faces as long as they did before they cracked up, too.I wonder how many times they had to rehearse to get the lines straight.

It's a common misconceptions she was ad lib, but that was all scripted. Recently ba former script supervisor even realized their scripts to show it

I have often wondered if some of it was improvisation. She was that talented.
@@DanielSanchez-og4ox I would have to say that first one is/was. Neither Rue nor Bea could get through it. You could see something brewing inside Bea's mind and then, she couldn't even say what she was thinking.

It's not an adlib or improvise by Betty, it's really in the script the Great Herring War. The giggle is not in the script.
This is why The Golden Girls lasted so long, the genius of the writers and true talent of the actresses.
I’m convinced: Rose is the only other character in TV history that could tell a story about tying an onion to her belt.

I heard it took 9 hours to film one show. Now I see why it took so long. I would have loved to see the show being filmed. Another scene I like was the show they were putting on and Blanche's fake breasts burst when Biff the drifter gives her a big hug. Dorothy says my ties have less pressure.

That night butter was spelled R O S E ❤ What was just as phenomenal as their talent was that each of the ladies consistently gave all of the credit to the writers. They were right -even a great actor can’t save a bad script. Needless to say, Golden Girls scripts were some of the greatest in all of television history.

She was a little yet fierce "Triple Threat," a force with which to be reckoned. With a career that spanned 4 forms of entertainment at their respective heights (vaudeville, film, radio, infant television) and over 25 years experience, Gracie was the ultimate doll. Perhaps, I will someday be like her.

Soon after they married, my stepdad and I were watching the show while my mom had dozed off against him. Rose said something funny and he looked at me looking startled and said, “Your mother is Rose”! He became my “dad” at that moment.

I'm going to check Barnes & Noble and see if I can buy them at one of their stores. I bought the first season DVDs there and they play fine. Some of the Amazon sellers aren't too reputable.

Betty White was born with a 'poker face'..I bet she would be amazing at poker playing as well! But notice how she & Rowan Atkinson was able to not laugh in the face of comedy? That's enormous self-control..it takes years to train for that.. 😊!

That first story actually has behind-the-scenes history on it.
The take they used was from the dress rehearsal. When they tried to film it again for the actual episode, they found that the genuine laughter from Betty, Bea, and Rue made it sink in that, despite their differences, they were good roommates for each other and decided to keep the original, guffaws and all.
So Bea and Rue's hysterical shrieks of laughter.... that was all them.

The thing for me is when I finish the work. I work in a hotel betwen a lake, and sometimes I watch over the window and say to myself: "God, why this lake don't have some piranha in it? I am vegetarian so I will be like a salat with meat for them, a full happy meal."
