    So I figured out that Massive Attack song that I had heard before -- Girl I Love You. And yes, now I know it doesn't have a female singer😅. But my only previous experience with it was hearing it 2-3 times a days, every day through department store speakers so I wasn't getting the best listening experience for it.

      It's not a female voice, that's Andy Horace, a reggae performer from Jamaica.

      Late reply, but if you want some massive attack songs with pretty creepy female vocals, 'Black Milk' and 'Group Four' from the 'Mezzanine' album are actually incredible songs. Group Four in particular really hits those crescendos you might have felt were missing from 'Risingson'.

    Welcome to trip hop. Totally laid back and chill. These guys are the masters of the genre in my opinion. Countless times in a "smokey" room or nights driving with windows down and just feeling the vibe. This song plays better when listened in the context of the whole album, but it's actually my favorite track by them. A good change of pace from the usual intense and heavy things I listen to.

    Mezzanine is a 10/10 album, which you may be doing yourself a disservice having started with Risingson. Being track two, you're missing the punch from Angel (track 1) and the release you were looking for in Teardrop (track 3), which is a song about and dedicated to the passing of the late Jeff Buckley. This is one of those LPs that begs for front to end listening. Such a lasting impact, and many musicians even name-drop MA as one of their favorite acts which I can guarantee is because of this album.
    They're also a revolving door of musicians. Their LP, Heligoland, features a handful of tracks from the vocalist of Elbow, and Damon Albarn of Blur/Gorillaz, among others. Earlier LPs featured Tricky, another great trip-hop artist. Mezzanine in particular has at least 3 different vocalists throughout its length.

    • @Darrenski
      @Darrenski 4 месяца назад

      No it didn't feature Tricky. Tricky was a full time member of MA who just went solo. I think he kinda had a falling out with them as well. Don't know the details. But I do know the remaining 3 members had a very bad falling out with another member. There were 4, then there were 3. So I'd guess that you don't need to look too far for the culprit.

    Trip hop genre doesn’t really have riffs like you would have in any other genres. It’s a chill mood kind of genre (and not everyone’s cup of tea)... from the lads from Bristol.
    That just shows you music is subjective just like eating sashimi (or miso)... you either like to eat raw fish or you don’t.

    Love Massive Attack and Portishead. Listening to them with good headphones or good speakers/subwoofer is quite the experience. Spent a good month or so obsessed with them. Wish there was more music out there like them, but most other trip-hop I've heard just doesn't have the same vibe. As other have said, that combination of tension and chill delivery is strangely hypnotic: I call it Anxiety Groove, and nobody does it quite like Massive Attack. Portishead can be just as atmospherically engrossing but in a different way. If they were soundtracks I think Portishead would be like sci-fi noir, while Massive Attack is more psychological thriller/horror.

    This was *so* weird hearing a single track from the "Mezzanine" album out of context!... this is truly an album which is worth setting aside an hour to listen thru *as an album* ,& that's something I still do on the regular. There are precious few albums from 20-odd years ago which I still regularly listen straight thru, so that's high praise. I've spent more money than I can really justify on proper HiFi kit over the years, but this is one of the stand-out pieces which gives said HiFi a healthy workout! I thoroughly recommend a dimly lit room with no distractions, relaxing with maybe a glass of red in hand, & letting this album wash over you.... it can be *quite* the transcendent experience. ;)

    Love my 90's trip hop as well as metal and alternative. I agree with the others who have said that the song you can't remember is probably Teardrop - in my opinion their best tune. It'd be interesting if you checked out some Portishead too if you're not already familiar. Maybe 'Roads' or 'Over'. If you were in the UK it'd be virtually impossible not to have heard some Massive Attack or especially Portishead, as they both still get used on TV quite regularly, despite being 25 year old tunes. Or if you feel like venturing even further from your channel's usual music into '90's electronica, some of the early Prodigy such as 'Voodoo People' , 'Break and Enter', or 'Wind it Up'.

    I see this as actually slow rolling unification of writing and production started off by guys like Brian Wilson but really it's been happening since the advent of music recording technology. You really can't understate how important dub and dancehall was for this either but Artists like Massive Attack, my personal favorite The Prodigy and other early 90s electronic and hip hop acts are where they became totally indistinguishable from each other. What really happened was the ability to do this became available technologically at the everyman price point.

    I feel like you missed this one, failing to approach the song on its own terms but rather expecting something else entirely and something quite specific by the sound of it. Not a criticism, just an observation. I'm really fascinated by the review actually, it made me think about all the stuff I've dismissed on first listen and never returned to. Yeah most of massive attack songs that I've heard were really moody listens with very little to no dynamic work... and I think that's a good thing! The album from which this song comes from is often dubbed as a prime example of a nightwalk/drive music. Very atmospheric, tense, it always keeps you on your toes. This "sitting in a bubble" serves a purpose of not loosing the set mood. Really good stuff imo, but probably not for everyone.
    That one Massive Attack song you're talking about is Teardrop, I think. It has a creepy music video with a female lead (I believe it's a singer of Cocteau Twins actually). It's probably their most popular song.

    There's a lot of people saying the song you know from Massive Attack, but can't recall the name, is this that or the other thing. In reality, female vocals with a creepy atmosphere is like 50% of their songs. The song you're thinking of could just as likely be from the album Heligoland which had Hope Sandoval, of Mazzy Star fame, as well as the amazing Martina Topley-Bird providing vocals, amongst others.
    Should you decide to revisit this album, I'd recommend Group Four. Has a great groove, like Risingson, but will also provide the release you were looking for.
    And, if you made it this far, a request- Eggdog by Beak. Beak features Geoff Barrows, from Portishead, and does moody, experimental electronic-rock stuff. This song, Eggdog, has some of my favorite drumming, ever. The "Live on KEXP" might be the best version for first time listeners.
