The whole album is definitely worth a listen, so many good songs with a huge variety of different sounds.

Great reaction. Considering how influential TripHop was in the 90s I’m always surprised there is not more interest or reactions to Massive Attack and Portishead.

The opening track of Mezzanine. My entire body and soul responds with pure joy from that opening bass. Getting ready to take in one of the best albums ever recorded (Great bands making a "best of" album would struggle to line up "Angel", "Risingson", "Teardrop" (you did an Aurora cover, I think - edit - you mentioned it while I was reading), "Inertia Creeps" and "Exchange" (the five first tracks on this album. Having listened to these 5 songs you are touching half an hour of music listening.
It is easy to forget just how influential Mezzanine has been. Since pretty much everyone who never heard about Massive Attack has heard this music. It has been sampled the shit out of for decades.
Slap on the whole album, gentlemen. Because by the time you are 5 songs of near perfection in you have yet not heard the title track or Man Next Door or... This album is also old enough that you can feel it (while it sounds up to date). You hear the age in the songwriting patterns (they start with an intro, unlike today when all songs start with the hook - mostly to be blamed on radio-DJs). The album is also stacked traditionally. Not totally concept album-like refusing to make sense if shuffled, but the album itself follows an arc.

"Black milk" and "Dissolved Girl" are my favorite songs on the album. When I first heard it I assumed it was made in the late 2010's, which shows you how well it aged (especially for the genre)

One of, if not the, founders of the ‘trip hop’ genre in britain. It’s a great sound they have some great songs

One of the best bands in the world, I feel they are very under rated but possibly the way they like it with all their collaborations and projects!

One of my all time favourite tracks. It's more cinematic than the first 2 albums, which is why it's been used so much in film and TV. There's a great scene in West Wing where the president's daughter gets kidnapped from a nightclub with this as the soundtrack. Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky really broke new ground in the 90s. Top banana!

I agree - great song, listening to this in a car on a long drive with a lot of immersive base is a treat, and you keep on repeating this track. This was used in the film "Snatch" very effectively in a scene where Brad Pitt and his gypsy family were witnessing a gruesome event (avoiding spoilers in-case) - powerful scene.
Listen to the massive attack version of Teardrop - it's great.
It is time you seriously considered reacting to Siouxsie and the Banshees, a hugely influential British Punk / Post Punk band. Start off by "Cities in the Dust" - you won't go wrong with this one and definitely won't regret it.

Risingson is a great tune from this album too, Massive Attack were part of a cool Bristol scene at this time with the likes of Portishead & Tricky.

Massive Attach are the OG’s of the ‘Bristol’ sound, which is my home city! Make sure you also get onto Roni Size and Represent (Brown Paper Bag) and also Portishead (Dummy)

Some albums are albums, some albums are worlds. Mezzanine is definitely it's own atmosphere.

Top request and reaction, this is my favourite 90's album closely followed by Pre-millenium Tension by Tricky (former member), trip-hop never ages in my opinion and in particular Mezzanine, every track a belter especially Risingson, Inertia Creeps and Group Four.

It's an example of the brilliance that can come out of innovation on the fly due to a time constraint, as with Smoke On The Water. The big long planned thing can be a waste of time in comparison, because there's something about the creative spark that way.

Love the intensity in this track, the build etc, fantastic. But that bassline is really the heartbeat there, similar to radiohead's national anthem.
So glad you got this one.
From the previous album Unfinished sympathy was often voted one of the best tracks ever, you should definition check out more from them.
If I'm buying speakers or headphones and can't really hear the bass at the start of this, they are no good.
    ....
Horace Andy was a regular guest vocalist for them, singing on spying glass, light my fire, and Five man army (which I really like, though that's partly for the clearly out of date lyric about how easy it is to get a US visa) among others.

I actually slightly prefer Portishead's second album. Both of those albums are absolute masterpieces imho. I'm not quite as keen on their 'Third' album, although it does have some standout tracks, in particular "The Rip".

Love this song! Extremly visual and cinematic. For me the music in the same sphere as Depeche mode. The lyrics is a bit difficult to hear mostly. I don't know but it could be the mixing, sometimes the voice sounds more as a music instrument. Great friends!!
