I’m 2 years younger than this track, and it’s been with me since birth (thanks das for a great music taste). And man does it make me feel older all of a sudden! Could’ve been released today and fit right in, so ahead of it’s time! Or Timeless
Out of left field here, but "Angel" was used in an episode of "The West Wing" in a long scene depicting an impending kidnappping, and it was a perfect choice, for the factors you mentioned -- menace, building tension. Watching the scene, you don't know what's about to happen, but because of the music, you know it's something big and dangerous.
I've been saying for awhile now I think music is digressing, but not exactly. We have plenty of bands/musicians putting out highly futuristic amazing music, it just it lacks a certain vibe that really keeps you from coming back over and over in the way a Massive Attack or Portishead song does for you.
You had me at Maynard Imagine Tool or Puscifer doing a Massive Attack'esque song? Actually if you think about there's probably some elements already in their music
My absolute dream. I was probably the only 11 year old girl in Kansas, US. that even knew who Massive Attack and Portishead were. I dreamed of seeing all of them live. If we got a time machine, I'd go on a 90s trip-hop tour and see all my favorite bands. They just dont make em like this any more. What was it like to watch them live?
to me, as a metal head, in my late teens, and being exclusive and not tolerant of any other type of music at that period in my life, when I first heard this, it just made me shut up. And I loved this whole album. Also, that first "breaking the intolerance barrier", helped me become way better musician later in life... that whole album is a masterpiece
well, I've always been a fan of metal and... electronic music, but more like that atmospheric stuff. Mezzanine just never gets old. I remember after my first listen I just listenned to it non-stop 24/7.
First time I saw Massive Attack live was on 98’ Mezzanine European Album tour in Graz, Austria. They played in an ice hockey hall and performed an extended version of the whole album from A to Z plus a few older songs at the end. When the bass kicks in at the beginning of Angel, the first song on the album, it started snowing inside the hall. It was not snow but the paint that was peeling off the ceiling of the hall because of the massive vibration of the Bassline sound. It was pure magic. ❤
This is the last track I expected to see on this channel - one of the greatest albums of all time, never mind trip hop. A seminal masterpiece. Excited for this new chapter you guys are starting! Unfinished Sympathy, one of their earlier tracks is incredible. Still sounds futuristic over 30 years after it's release.
"Still sounds futuristic over 30 years after it's release." Experimental? Yes, unquestionably. Futuristic.....sadly, no. It sounded dated in the 90s and sounds even older now. The drumbeat is a canned Clyde Stubblefield beat (something which defines the early 90s hip-hop and trip-hop sound and is heard in everything from Fresh Prince to N.W.A., Boyz II Men to En Vogue, and everything in-between), the soaring vocals are pure 90s, the synths are pure 90s synth sounds. Everything about it screams "90s" at the top of its lungs. Angel on the other hand, has none of those traits and you'd be extremely hard-pressed to say when it was released.
@@jordieg-us4ee Their album 100th Window is definitely worth checking out. It came after Mezzanine and is kind of a continuation of that sound but into an even darker direction.
One of THE GREATEST British albums of all time. Massive Attack are pioneers. An absolute stone cold classic. I have no idea how they made this so good.
You’ve stumbled across one of the greatest records ever made. I’m not exaggerating. I’d put this in the top 2 of the nineties, top 25 of all time. Mezzanine is a masterwork, full stop. Menacing, tense, dark, apocalyptic, futuristic. It’s 25 yrs old and still sounds like it’s from the future. This record deserves nothing less than a complete listen from beginning to end. As we see from your reaction, you just know immediately that you’re hearing something special. I cannot speak highly enough about it. It’s superlative by any standard.
Dissolved Girl is another good one by Massive Attack that you guys would like. Love this reaction! DJ Shadow's album Endtroducing is another legendary trip hop album. A good song to check out would be Building Steam With a Grain of Salt. 🤠
Love to see the enthusiastic reaction to Massive Attack and 1000% upvote the DJ Shadow recommendation with one qualification: I know it's the big single and all but Midnight in a Perfect World has to be the track off Entroducing to hear first, right?

Being from Bristol trip hop and Massive Attack and Portishead provided the sound of the City in 1990's. They are excellent live too so worth a reaction to them live.
The band was formed under such unique circumstances and a really solid array of session musicians over the years they are untouchable on originality. Mezzanine itself is just timeless and has aged like fine wine. It was innovative for the time on the tech front and held up. Once in a generation stuff. George and Ryan, you're in for a treat when you listen to this start to finish. A perfect listen.
Horace Andy has gotta have one of the best and most distinctive voices in all of Reggae. Fantastic track and vocal feature by him. He's an absolute legend in his own right.
Jesus.. I was trying to get you onto this for years! Such an important band, and you hit the nail on the head when you said this should be where music is now.
This song is a master class on how to build tension in a song to an absolute climax and then back to the quiet brooding tension. The official music video adds so much to the experience as well and its very worth checking it out if you havent seen it
Meanest bass line you can hear live. Unforgettable experience... It bangs on the walls and beat your guts. One of the greatest "WTF" feelings I ever had in a concert.
This song was perfectly used in the movie “Snatch” That scene with this song playing in the background was awesome!! You should check out the soundtrack from that movie.
This album is incredible. Starts with 4 straight bangers, short interlude, then 5 more absolute scorchers. Also the bass mixing and overall production on this album is some of the best I've ever heard, just insane.
the mixing is great, the mastering doesn't, it's one of the releases of their time that started to suffer the trend of the loudness war, resulting in flat dynamics and loss of impact and energy
This was unbelievable live. Was so loud and the bass was just levitating. Also, Grant (Daddy G) from Massive Attack used to come and buy fresh fish off a stall I worked on at St. Nicholas Market, Bristol. He slipped me a promo press only copy of 100th Window, on CD of course, about a week before it released and said 'don't give that to anyone else', with a wink.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that "Angel" is one of the best tracks of all time. I wish I could re-hear this song for the first time again, you guys truly are blessed! Love the vids fellas, keep 'em coming.
No way, Lads thank you so much for this one! As a Bristolian this one was fantastic, growing up listening to Bristol’s holy trinity of Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky! This album is straight up one of the best ever written! Would absolutely love to see reactions to Inertia Creeps, Risingson, Dissolved Girl and Man Next Door! Thank you
4:00 I think the reason why it sounds really great despite it being simple is the composers of "Angel" understand musical dynamics and how to build to something. It's noticeable compared to music released today where there's very little thought put into how soft or loud a note should be.
@@m-4136 it refers to the difference between loud and quiet sounds. It also has full spectrum of sound. Modern music for example has very low dynamics because all the sounds are nearly the same volume. It sounds like a brickwall and very tiring for the ears
From the first bars of the first song (ie this one) you feel something you almost never feel in music: danger. That's a big part of what makes this so interesting: engaging the listener with unease, and then completely hooking them with pure liquid fire.
This album is so special and was so innovative at the time. I think they would like all the stuff from Lamb Fear of 4's, like the whole album is NOT in 4/4 time.
Most epic reaction to this song, ever. Thank you, guys, for really appreciating this song. Very underrated, and a lot of people miss the little details you catch and love. Keep it coming!! 💯
Seeing that live is one of my alltime favorite concert moments. All live instruments - guitar, bass and drums. And man... when those drums kicked in you could just feel a slow building roar from the crowd as if everyone just had to really realize how absolutely fantastic the sound was. Crystal clear and perfectly balanced. And while sounding great the entire band just stood there in hoodies in massive backlight looking cool as fuck. It was spectacular.
They used this song for the scene in Snatch, when Brad Pitt's character looses his mom in an arson attack. The music and Brad's performance together are an awesome emotional storm. ruclips.net/video/L7b4tKZb0xE/видео.html
Beauty infused with darkness/danger. That's the secret sauce. This album finds the perfect balance and superposition between the two. The music video for this is also absolute FIRE
Ive never clicked a video so fast u should also listen to "teardrop", "come near me" and "i against i" ft mos def, all three different from each other and all three really good.
I'm from Bristol, home of Massive Attack, Portishead, Roni Size, Tricky, I'd recommend Unfinished Symphony from Massive Attack, and get on New Forms by Roni Size!
Incredible song. Incidentally, Massive Attack would agree with you about the genre name trip hop! It’s worth noting that the area of Britain they come from is very rural. Bristol is a city but not a big one. Secondly, it has a big West Indian population so there was a lot of dub and reggae around which seeps it’s way into Massive Attack’s sound. The band also have talked about liking hip hop and film soundtracks which also you can hear in their atmospheric soundscapes. Finally, fans of Luther will know the theme song is by the band. Next up try something by Tricky or Sneaker Pimps ‘6 under’ ( Nelle Hopper remix)
First time commenter and long time watcher, this is my favorite album of all time. Every song is amazing and it still feels new 25 years later. Please do more mezzanine
Such a good song. Video is amazing too. Video, dude running away from his fears and then he stops and turns around and faces them and his fears are scared of him. It's so powerful. Song is a masterpiece.
This is one of those tracks that just never gets old, I've listened to it so many times over the decades and it just sounds fresh every damn time...that build up and release? Legendary...
Massive Attack has so much "feel" in their electronic production. It's a rare trait. Normally I care more about melody and song structure, but with Massive Attack I love the window-dressings. Everything is so lush and vibey. It's the perfect late night album. It's like inner-city decaying urban environment.
This is one of the most legendary albums ever in any musical genre and was most definitely timeless and way ahead of its time. Im so glad you guys love this!
Massive Attack is easily in my top 3 of my favorite bands of all time. And I've been listening to music since the late 60s. So many amazing songs by this group.
The ultimate Massive Attack banger is "safe from harm" also in the trip hop family is DJ Shadow go for "building steam with a grain of salt" love your shit fave reactors definitely getting patron specifically for lost in vegas.
Ultimate Massive Attack banger is a tough call. Got to be Unfinished Sympathy for me, specifically the Pefecto mix, but man Safe from Harm is a banger too...
If you loved 'Glory Box' by Portishead, you probably need to listen to 'Hell is around the corner' by Tricky - both use the same sample from Isaac Hayes 'Ike's Rap II' (from the album ‘Black Moses’) in beautiful and different ways (Portishead were first to use it in '93, Tricky the following year) I'd love to hear you review One Dove's 'Morning Dove White' (especially 'Fallen'), and Lamb's 'Fear of Fours' (especially 'Bonfire') - more British trip hop type beautiful electronica
Morning Dove White is one gem that ppl seem to not know about so much. They know Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack, Air, DJ Shadow etc, but you dont often see One Dove in the comments sections
@@sticktothefacts8905 It’s a shame folk don’t remember One Dove so much. Dot Allison has the voice of an angel, and Andy Weatherall’s production is undeniable… * chef’s kiss *
Maybe my favorite of your reaction vids-the ferociousness of the track, Ryan's initial premonition, George's immediate unspoken understanding and curiosity, and well the "bid dick" analogy is just too funny! love you guys!
Angel is great. You should try out a song with one of the many amazing female vocalists that have featured on their tracks. Teardrop, Protection or Unfinished Sympathy.
@@verstarkt2192 the song that got me into them, but the early version that was used over the end credits of The Jackal. I heard it and I immediately had to go track more down.
I love the way you both present different ways of describing and interpreting the song. And I love the perspective your taking of appreciating the skill and talent that goes into making music, even when one doesn't like the genre.
This album along with Portisheads stuff, DJ Shadows Entroducing etc were the soundtrack to my late teens and early twenties. It was incredible ❤ Great reaction guys!
I love that you guys FINALLY fell upon one of my favorite bands/albums of all time! Please deepdive massive attack immediately! This album is truly an epic masterpiece.
One of my favorite band ever. I still listen to Massive Attack daily. That whole album is sick but the earlier stuff is awesome too. Karmacoma is great too.
This band / collective is fantastic. The album Mezzanine was another step in their evolution. The album was a departure from their other classic album Blue Lines. More guitars, layered production and Horace Andy being a part of their touring group. Classic old school reggae artist. You can’t go wrong with anything from those two álbums or their singles like Protection. They will be on your playlists for sure.
To me Blue Lines and Protection are amazing, i love everything about those albums, specially Protection...but Mezzanine is a masterpiece, is more cohesive as an album than the previous, is one of those albums you have to play from start to finish to enjoy.
This album is a masterpiece for sure, the best song on it is probably Inertia Creeps but my favorite song on the album is Risingson. You should also check out Tricky who was actually in Massive Attack before this album and then he started doing solo albums.
I'm primarily a hard rock fan ...... especially groovey, doom / stoner etc, some technical, some blackened etc ........ but Mezzanine is simply one of the greatest albums of all time.
Yes!! This is easily one of the greatest albums of the ‘90s. If you want to take a deeper dive then check out Tricky, who was a member of Massive Attack before going solo. He also has one of the great albums of this genre, ‘Maxinquaye’. Or check out his song ‘Christiansands’ from his follow-up album ‘Pre-Millenium Tension’.
I would love a trip hop marathon. Massive Attack alone have so many good cuts, Inertia Creeps, Man Next Door, Karmacoma and of course the other really big 2 Unfinished Sympathy and Teardrop (aka the music from House). Other stuff, Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground was iconic back in the day. Portishead are just ungodly sublime music. Tricky from Massive Attacks solo material is absolutely dope as well, Hell Is Around The Corner which uses the beat from Glory Box and the cover of Public Enemy Black Steel in The Hour of Chaos are off the chain. More recently Sevdeliza did a song that was obviously a tribute to the Bristol Trip-Hop scene called Rhodes. It was both a great tribute and banger in its own right. (Also, not to be a NARC or anything but Massive Attack are three people. There is a very credible theory that Rob, one of the three, is the secret identity of the street artist Banksy. Unconfirmed but personally, I believe it.)
i think i might be the only one who prefers Heligoland over everything else, that album is just so damn good and special. Splitting the Atom, Girl I love you, Psyche, Paradise Circus, all masterpieces that everybody should hear!
Mezzanine is an all-time album for me. Just sublime from top to bottom. It slides effortlessly from grimy claustrophobia to euphoric joy to bittersweet melancholia, and every mood it delivers is so all-enveloping that you don't want it to end.
I have never had as much chills as when I first saw Massive Attack live for the first time in '99 and this song came on. It's something about being hit by those low, rumbeling sub-bass lines you can't hear but those huge concert speakers vibrates your core.
So happy to see a reaction to Massive Attack. They are a legendary British band. Best tracks for me are: 'Unfinished Sympathy - absolute masterpiece ( needs a reaction) 'Teardrop' and my personal favourite is 'Protection' featuring beautiful vocals from Tracey Thorn.
great reaction!! Massive at their absolute sonic peak. The whole album is perfection. They absolutely mastered the use of space in their sound. I still think of these guys as totally cutting edge
Loved this reaction - thanks, guys! Mezzanine is a flawless album - everyone had a copy of it back in the day. Everyone. You'd go to parties and it would run on a loop and never get old. Highly recommend that you go see Massive Attack live if they ever tour again. The music combined with their immersive visuals is an unforgettable experience.
Been a trip hop head for over 10 years, and its great to see peoples reaction to the music. I meet a lot of people who say they've never heard the genre before, but show 'em some "Clubbed to Death" by Rob Dougan, some, "6 Underground" by Sneaker Pimps, and some, "Teardrop" by Massive Attack, and it turns out alot of people HAVE come across the genre at some point. That outta the way. You've heard Portishead, and Massive Attack (also Zero7 apparently). There's a ton of other bands/outfits, and you've heard some of the more important ones, but some of the standout ones missing are Sneaker Pimps (i suggest their songs "walking zero" or "6 underground"), and DJ Shadow (i suggest his songs "building steam with a grain of salt" or "midnight in a perfect world"). Of course i could list off dozens of others but these cover your bases.
I've been dying to see your reactions to this particular song for a long time. One thing about the Brits, their music is always about 20 years ahead of our's. Always has been with every generation. You can hear this style used almost everywhere now. Mezzanine is not only one of the greatest albums of it's kind, but it is also the swan song of the last century. Easily the best album of the 90's and a perfect way to end that place and time. Flawless in every way and a testament to a style that really can't be categorized. It is an album for fans of all music.
thanks man, but not true with punk, or rock n roll, but thanks, some of our music is way cool and groundbreaking, and Massive Attack are up there, and they helped change my musical direction
@@RichardWHardwick Maybe you could say they sometimes appreciate our culture better than we do. We hear it reflected back and it sounds new and familiar at the same time. That's definitely how it was with the blues.

the mixing is great, the mastering doesn't, it's one of the releases of their time that started to suffer the trend of the loudness war, resulting in flat dynamics and loss of impact and energy
Do you have any good album recs that sounds like Mezzanine? Please @@AvithOrtega
I was raised by Gen X teenage parents so trip hop was my soundtrack as a child. So glad to see you cover this!

Thank you
big up the Bristol crew my babs

Risingson is a must for sure!
4:00 I think the reason why it sounds really great despite it being simple is the composers of "Angel" understand musical dynamics and how to build to something. It's noticeable compared to music released today where there's very little thought put into how soft or loud a note should be.
This shit actually has dynamics, which is what is really missing from a lot of modern music IMO.
Can someone tell what is meant by dynamics? Music for dummies lol please 🙏
@@m-4136 it refers to the difference between loud and quiet sounds. It also has full spectrum of sound. Modern music for example has very low dynamics because all the sounds are nearly the same volume. It sounds like a brickwall and very tiring for the ears
@@m-4136 in crude terms, it's basically how quiet or loud music is played. Look up 'the loudness wars'

Massive attack never gets old.
This album was sonically life changing
Thanks for watching ❤ Merry Christmas congratulations dm me above 🤟 on Telegram _Got you something 🎁 🎁.......
This song has always done something to me, it takes me far away to a movie in my own mind!
In this song in particular. It's pure Tension. How it's crawling under your skin, slowly building up, to then explode and fade away.
This song is so badass in the movie Snatch, it goes so perfectly with the scene Guy Ritchie is setting.
Is it when they burned Micky's mom's caravan?

This really fit the movie Snatch, took it to the next level!

Thank you for the recognition. Massive attack is my favourite band. Mezzanine is masterpiece.
Let’s be honest here , you listen to massive attack with headphones on to truly understand and appreciate the sound and atmosphere of their music.
This song STILL brings the goosebumps and watering eyes. And with a subwoofer..... DAYUM.
the subwoofer is MANDATORY
Angel has blown out more speakers than any other song in existence
They used this song for the scene in Snatch, when Brad Pitt's character looses his mom in an arson attack. The music and Brad's performance together are an awesome emotional storm. ruclips.net/video/L7b4tKZb0xE/видео.html
Snatch soundtrack is fire
Beauty infused with darkness/danger. That's the secret sauce. This album finds the perfect balance and superposition between the two. The music video for this is also absolute FIRE
Ive never clicked a video so fast
u should also listen to "teardrop", "come near me" and "i against i" ft mos def, all three different from each other and all three really good.

Should definitely do their song Teardrop next! It’s awesome
bump bump
The José González cover of that one is great too
I'm from Bristol, home of Massive Attack, Portishead, Roni Size, Tricky, I'd recommend Unfinished Symphony from Massive Attack, and get on New Forms by Roni Size!
Absolutely
yess we need some jungle on the channel
This entire album is perfect start to finish. Music so good it feels like from another plane of existence or something
There aren't many perfect albums, but I agree, Mezzanine is a masterwork. Even 25 years later, it still brings the heat.
As is Obscura !
Aftermath would be a great one.
Portishead - Bristol as well.... #justsaying
Having Horace Andy sing with them definitely shows their respect for reggae and dub.
Every song on this album is awesome. Timeless album. My favourite song off off the album would be Dissolved Girl.
me too man !!
First time commenter and long time watcher, this is my favorite album of all time. Every song is amazing and it still feels new 25 years later. Please do more mezzanine
Angel and Teardrop, both from Mezzanine, are arguably the defining tracks of the genre.
"PROTECTION" is a track that will melt you.
Along with their biggest hit "Teardrop".
If you loved 'Glory Box' by Portishead, you probably need to listen to 'Hell is around the corner' by Tricky - both use the same sample from Isaac Hayes 'Ike's Rap II' (from the album ‘Black Moses’) in beautiful and different ways (Portishead were first to use it in '93, Tricky the following year)
I'd love to hear you review One Dove's 'Morning Dove White' (especially 'Fallen'), and Lamb's 'Fear of Fours' (especially 'Bonfire') - more British trip hop type beautiful electronica
Every track on this album is just so masterfully crafted.
Elizabeth Fraser , Tracey Thorn and Shara Nelson, that's 3 class acts right there.
You do know the leader song writer of Massive Attack is a woman?
Or Paradise Circus.
@@mattd8725 Luther would agree with that.
One of the best albums of all time. Perfect for a late night drive through a desert cityscape.
this song in particular makes driving feel so cool LOL
Perfect night dive album
This album is flawless. Group Four is possibly the finest song on the album, next to Black Milk.
Dissolved girl for me
Teardrop
Group Four is BEST!!!!
@@verstarkt2192 the song that got me into them, but the early version that was used over the end credits of The Jackal. I heard it and I immediately had to go track more down.
The end of Group Four if you've got a proper subwoofer is fucking otherworldly.
This album is truly an epic masterpiece.
the whole album is one of the greatest ever
Black Milk is one of my all times favorite songs
One of my favorite band ever. I still listen to Massive Attack daily. That whole album is sick but the earlier stuff is awesome too. Karmacoma is great too.
This made me so happy to see your reaction 😊 - literally changed your life!
This is my favourite reaction video ever. They totally get it.
...and YES - Roundabout !
Horace Andy is such a reggae legend, and suddenly then trip hop. Love it, it really is a fusion.
To me Blue Lines and Protection are amazing, i love everything about those albums, specially Protection...but Mezzanine is a masterpiece, is more cohesive as an album than the previous, is one of those albums you have to play from start to finish to enjoy.
Massive Attack and Portishead are two of the best representations of how creative the music scene is in my home city.
This album is a masterpiece for sure, the best song on it is probably Inertia Creeps but my favorite song on the album is Risingson. You should also check out Tricky who was actually in Massive Attack before this album and then he started doing solo albums.
Yess... Risingson. I'm with you. That actually is the best song on the album. It took a while, but I came round'.
They would loooove Tricky
I want them to react to Hollow by Tricky. I was mesmerized by that song.

This is thee best reaction to this song by far. One of the few I come back and watch repeatedly. Thank you guys.
UK in the 90s was Trip Hop.
The music, the art scene, the style. It was everything.
It was all about the trip hop and big beat for me. 90s UK was 🔥 🔥 🔥 for music.
I feel sorry for everyone that wasn’t there. Just halcyon days. Real music, real people.
Maxinquaye! That album is so beyond
i could use some nostalgia right now too
drink till i'm drunk and smoke till i'm senseless
Yessss Christiansands!!!!!!
How about some Portishead in there ?
@@redjakOfficial They already reacted to / know about Portishead
Tricky - Maxinquaye, seconding that! Track - Abbaon Fat Tracks; Black Steel (Public Enemy cover)
Guess you already heard it, a bit older than Rhodes, but soo good: SEVDALIZA - LIBERTINE
Hell is Round the Corner never leaves my top list. chills
i think i might be the only one who prefers Heligoland over everything else, that album is just so damn good and special. Splitting the Atom, Girl I love you, Psyche, Paradise Circus, all masterpieces that everybody should hear!
Aye. Love Black Steel
Karmacoma is a brilliant track. And fantastic use of it in the ‘Showgirls’ soundtrack!
Protection ❤️
Amazing 👍
great reaction!! Massive at their absolute sonic peak. The whole album is perfection. They absolutely mastered the use of space in their sound. I still think of these guys as totally cutting edge
I really expected you to do teardrop tbh, they’re an awesome band with a lot of iconic tracks. Teardrop is one you should definitely listen to.
I don't necessarily disagree but this is a ridiculously controversial statement.
Some outrageous work produced back in the 90s
