7:30 I think what you’re getting at here is that modern hip-hop production has evolved to include a lot of the elements present on this and similar albums. Both trip-hop and witch house have had such a tremendous impact on producers in hip-hop and pop that modern audiences don’t even realize that it is because of the influence of these other genres.
Side note - clams casino came out of the witch house scene, which has a lot in common with trip-hop

Blue Lines has a bit less “vagueness” with the genre influences, the mixed bag of late 80’s hip-hop rhymes (3D / Daddy G who remain to this day, and Tricky who went solo during the first 2 records onwards), soul vocals on some tracks, reggae/dub from ya boy Horace Andy (I think he features on every album aside from the Ritual Spirit EP), it still feels cohesive and it’s just a vibey chill party vibe throughout.
Their second record Protection started blurring the lines more like Mezzanine did with the ethereal, dark vibes, Tricky more present than Daddy G on the vocals and another Trip-Hop vocalist royalty Tracy Thorn from Everything But The Girl (there’s another lady on some tracks but my mind’s blanking on her name)
Both albums are so worth checking, I love Heligoland and Ritual Spirit EP too but 100th Window hasn’t clicked with me yet, it was quite a different vibe.

Trip Hop has hip hop elements but comes from the UK dance/techno culture. The "trip" element is regarding the moody downtempo beats, the heavy prominance of the bass and a lot of reverb on the drums and samples. Unlike american hip-hop that was more uotempo and crisp at the time and popular with urban radio stations/BET, Trip hop was more popular in dance and rave culture, but can include rapping or singing or just instramental.

Interesting i think « Hip Hop » nowadays includes a lot of electronic elements, but the hip hop from the 90’s was really classic hip hop if that makes sense, what characterises trip hop is a combination of eerie/dreamy production, samples/electro elements, kinda trippy, the more you listen to it the more you’ll get it

P.S: They hate the term trip hop just so you know. They have always deemed it hip hop too as you suggest. Trip hop was a term the uk music media coined just for their own weird purposes.

Just wanted to throw out there that I am Thoroughly enjoying this channel, even though music review content is treacherous and notoriously cringy, you pull it off somehow. I love the format and how you take the time to edit this in a way we don’t have to listen to the full album, but also can enjoy all the key moments. Thank you dude. I really wanted to recommend a couple things, as I love the things that you are loving and really am excited at the prospect of seeing you experience a few of these. First of all I have to ask if you’ve heard the album Psyence Fiction by UNKLE? I saw the video where you said you wish you wouldve record a reaction to Entroducing.. well this is a lesser know album that was primarily DJ Shadows doing and was made immediately after finishing entroducing. With lots of featured artist tracks ranging from thom York of Radiohead to Mike d from the beastie boys this record plays like a moody trip hoppy brooding cousin of a classic gorillas album. It has its imperfections but it’s an absolute essential in my book. Also has all the ingredients for a great reaction vid. Secondly, I wanted to recommend Mad Blunted Jazz by DJ cam. This one is more subdued kind of a homework beats in the vein of selected ambient Works, I’m leaning more towards volume 1 for what it sounds like. And lastly, speaking of Aphex, I really think you should give Black Box life recorder his newest offering a listen on here, it’s only like 15 minutes from beginning to end and it’s incredible. Maybe my favorite thing he did, and my other favorites would be the selected ambient Works albums. Also, his album cheetah is an amazing accompaniment to Chase that with. Could be a good double feature as it is also short. Unlike this message, which is very long, I will leave you to it but please if you don’t on this channel, give this a listen if you haven’t heard them in your personal time, at least! Have a good one bud!

I think the best way to think of trip hop is that a lot of it is hip hop heavy, but its done in a trippy way. And yep, its kinda that simple. Most of massive attack were born out of the bristol hip hop scene. 3D for example was a graffiti artist (hence why some ppl believe hes Banksy) and they were like a sound system who put on parties and promoted hip hop and the whole culture. Thats back in the 80s. Portishead and massive attack are the gold standard for the genre. But i also recommended the other albums of Portishead. Dummy is probably their masterpiece but their other work is exceptional as well. Same with MA. Their earlier work was just as good.

I think the ‘triphop’ bands were very experimental with different genres(including hiphop), sampling, electronics and production. They all came from the UK where hiphop was doing simular things in the US. The label triphop was just thrown on it to define this sound that was later copied by more mainstream artists. The spoken lyrics are like rap in hiphop. I think the comparison with hiphop comes from this (and the hop in both names)😅

i’ve been TRYING to find an album that has better mixing than MEZZANINE. does anybody have ideas about albums with more divine mix work??
    😈
yo! what’s crazy about this album is that the 3 producers HATED EACH OTHER WHILE MAKING IT. Mushroom, the youngest member-a brit who spent time soaking up early 1980s hip hop culture-dropped out after they finished touring for the project. he felt like the songs were not embracing enough hiphop/r&b/soul/reggae/urban elements, like their first 2 albums. he famously yelled, “ARE WE A FUCKKNG PUNK BAND NOW??” 🎸(you did live all the guitar on this album haha!). Mushroom wanted ANGEL 👼🏼 to be sung by a r&b/soul singer (i think that’s code for a black woman with some gospel in her singing DNA, like the singer that used on their first album). Mushroom was so pissed about the other 2 wanting to use the woman from Cocteau Twins, HE SENT THE DEMO VERSION TO MADONNA’s MANAGER TO PROVE A POINT!
her manager loved replied saying Madonna was down to do use ANGEL for her own album. lmao#toxicworkenvironment
each producer used the studio WITHOUT the other 2 members present (a non-member engineer was the common denominator, he’s spoken about what it was like to watch one guy peace out bc his “bandmate” was on the way to get some work in lmao).

whats special about the title is a mezzanine in a hotel is that “half floor”: you can still see the lobby, but you’re like, standing in the lobby’s “balcony.” this album does well to illustrate what being in more than one place/state of mind, at once, can feel like. whether when we deal with intimacy, other people in the city, or even your friends (since making this broke up the band!). concluding, Horace Andy sings about how we deal with 2 or more parts of each man: you see the face, but don’t know the heart, or the mind.
they made such unique vibes here, 3D & Daddy G could never reach these levels again. Daddy G has since dropped out too. change is the only thing in life that lasts

One of the best-sounding albums production-wise. Not much like it.
