I bought this album right when it came out & it completely blew me away. So much so that I sent Phil a fan letter, only one I've ever sent. He sent me a letter in return with a large watercolor painting he'd made, still on my wall all these years later. It was really fun watching a person close to the age I was then experience this record for the first time.
Was it the wind that blew you away? If so, the reason he might have hand-made it for you was that he did it as an appreciation gesture as you fulfilled his wish
There’s a track on Phil’s previous album (It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water) called “The glow,” so that’s why this album is Pt. 2. Every Microphones and Mount Eerie album is connected in a way. There are tons of tracks that reference other tracks.
Please listen to Mount Eerie, as its the sequel to this album and continues right where this album leaves off, and some people even say its better than this album.
I hadnt heard to mount eerie before this comment and i thought this was referring to continuing the concepts of glow pt 2 or it coming after the album but the first track literally goes from my warm blood
@@alphalax7747ik this was forever ago and you probably already listened to mount eerie or stopped caring but it is both a continuation of the glow pt 2 story wise and it starts with my warm blood
I'd recommend the album "What It Takes To Move Forward" by the band Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate). It's vastly different from the glow part 2 but the same in the sense that it gives a profound and deep response through musicality and words. It has themes of heartbreak, death, life, memories, etc. Really emotional music paired with very poetic lyricism. Sad to see that the band no longer exists but happy that they made this masterpiece throughout it's lifetime. Though if you want an album that is the same as this in it's acoustic atmosphere and in the same calibre then I'd recommend "Idyll Opus" from the band Adjy. I dare say that this album has the best lyricism of any album of all time. Coupled with delicate musicality and profound themes such as meaning in oneself and in life, rebirth, love, death, The will to forget and let go, etc, I can only say that this album is a treasure trove for music and literature lovers since even after all of that, it narrates a joyful yet tragic story throughout it's runtime. I could not recommend both of these enough. If you want to react to this album, I'd recommend going to genius in order to understand the incredibly complex and brilliant story and lyricsm. I could not recommend these both enough.
My favorite album of all time. I don't normally get effected by music, but the first time I put this album on I was driving home after having a rough day emotionally. As soon as the title track started playing I had to pull over because it just made me cry. To this day, the only song to ever make me cry on first listen.
An album I think you would also enjoy is yankee hotel foxtrot by the band wilco. A classic album that also came out in the early 2000s and also has themes of heartbreak in it. very poetic.
I've seen them twice, the first time when they were touring for YHF (which I agree is classic), and then just last year. It was really interesting seeing a band again after 20 years of touring and growth, I think the live show has only gotten better.
26:43 The reason the album starts with the relationship already over is because it's actually a continuation of the relationship he describes in the song "The Glow" and in other songs on his previous album, "It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water".
You’ve really gotta do the “last” classic Microphones album, “Mount Eerie”. It picks up directly where The Glow Pt. 2 leaves off, not just musically, but thematically, except it takes the story to a more complex, life after death, dark sort of trip. It’s more experimental than The Glow Pt. 2, but it really is a stunning and beautiful listening experience.
You should listen to Vespertine by Bjork. She's from Iceland like Sigur Ros, but all her songs are in English. Vespertine is my favorite from her I think you'd really like it.
Also the suspenseful noise isnt a gong, it’s a foghorn i hear them all the time living on the coast. When the har rolls in (the fog) places on the coast and islands blast that noise because people cant see the lighthouse
The Glow PT 1 and The Gleam Part 1 are both banger tracks of “It was Hot we Stayed in the Water”, also listen to “Mount Eerie” just as good if not better than glow pt 2
the anger of relating to Headless Horseman is entirely valid. listened to this album for days at a time after a big breakup. goated album, and awesome reaction.
Not sure if you noticed but the opening of the glow pt2 was the same melody as the ending of i want wind to blow and the gleam pt2 is the same melody as the first something track
Try The Decemberists (or even Tarkio), Built To Spill, Man Man, and if you like the weird noise collage aspects of this album try The Lemon of Pink by The Books.
@@matthewford5094 I'd imagine. Their first 3 albums are masterpieces, and their rest are extremely good as well. It's just nice to see a rare Man Man fan in the wild.
You’re doing some super obscure albums compared to other reaction channels. I love what you’re doing. I would suggest looking into the Portland Oregon band, Ages and Ages. Either their first or second album. They’re a cool little band. And since you did The Microphones, you might want to check out Headphones. Headphones(not The Headphones) is a side project of David Bazan, the man behind Pedro The Lion.
Not gonna lie, I was worried you were going to hate this album based on the thumbnail. I just discover this album a couple weeks ago and I can’t stop listening to it. Great vid, I enjoyed your analysis.
If your wondering why the drums just randomly faded out i think its a reflection of the lyric change and all the confusing freaky stuff on this is intetional
I know this is an older video, but if you see this comment you have got to react to "it was hot, we stayed in the water" it is the first part to this album and has "the glow" and "the gleam" which are the counterpart to this albums

The original glow is top 5 phil tracks
Yeah when the actual metaphor for what ‘the glow’ is makes sense, pt2 just becomes even better

Commenting so Smags sees this
This is my all time favorite album, haven’t watched the video yet but I’m super excited to watch this
The glow pt1 is a song on his previous album “it was hot we stayed in water”
you're like anthony fantano but enjoyable
I literally wrote: "I miss my closest friend" stfu Phill!," in my notes a few days ago and now I see this. The exact same reaction lmoa 😭😭😭
You've absolutely gotta do Mount Erie next! It's such an incredible experience

'The Mansion' sends me to another plain of existence. Love that track. Another vote for Giles Corey - Giles Corey. Another sad one though 😂
fellow giles corey fan!!
GC Gang 🔥
Huge agree with the rec, absolutely incredible album, but holy shit what a desolate one.
i listened to this album the other day again and it came into my mind that you would probably like this

Big Trucks by Pedro The Lion is a long time favorite of mine.
yo im from portland im gonna listen to it
I listend to this and i love it so much im a generally happy dude and stuff like that but i cant say i havent had these thoughts before
you should check out george clanton’s slide. truly a producer’s album
and the one with esprit. that ones so woozy and psyhedelic
that would be so cool
I'm surprised how much people love this album like its good but I wouldn't expect it to be considered one of the best ever.
The little sound in the background of some of the songs is a foghorn tape loop he released it isolated as a field recording alblum
I love this album, funny thing I found out about them through Lil Peep’s production

You’re in the honeymoon stage rn. Lucky.
Exactly how I feel, just found this album a month ago. insanely good!
this is such a good interpretation and revieW

The recurring sound is a tugboat
Please give Genesis - Selling England by the Pound a listen. I think you'd love it based on ur other vids!
nah try trick of the tale
Yeah
Oh wait, this is the album and not the song? Nice.
You really are out here
Yo of you wanna check some metal stuff out I strongly recommend Diamond Eyes or White Pony by Deftones
