Definitely give Blue Lines and Protection a spin, incredible records, as is Tricky’s Maxinquaye x
Horace Andy’s “annoying voice” killed me a little, his voice is iconic. What Massive do so well is that they bring their past to their present, the influence of dub and reggae as well as hip hop and rock was one of the reasons why I love them x
Love Tricky!
It took me hearing more tracks with that vocalist/style to really appreciate Man Next Door. Mezzanine was my first massive attack album so it was just "strange" to my ears compared to others. Like eating a food you never tried before and thinking it was bad, but then a year later it somehow tastes great...
@@tommj4365 I can appreciate that and I suspect it’s the same for our gracious host. Despite growing up on a council estate in Somerset with no diversity at all, reggae was very popular which meant by the time Blue Lines landed it was already in my soul. Still enjoy all flavours today and sneak some dub frequently into my chill out show!
@@RachelRobinson44 can you imagine Kira’s reaction to Black Steel when that comes on? She’s going to love it x
Tricky 'Maxinquaye' for sure, also for a bit more fun try Moloko 'Do You Like My Tight Sweater.'
very iconic album here in the uk, still gets spun in bars and clubs to this day
You said that you preferred the female vocalist for trip-hop songs, but the one you liked so much, Angel, is actually a male vocalist. Horace Andy, a reggae vocalist from Jamaica and he also sang on (Exchange). Elizabeth Fraser is the guest female vocalist on Teardrop and Gang of Four. She was the lead singer from Cocteau Twins. Most of the female vocalist on Massive Attack songs are guest vocalist.
"teardrop" is all . 10/10
For more trip hop, DJ Shadow is a must. He helped pioneer the genre, even responsible for the name "trip hop", as a music reviewer attempted to describe his music in the early 90s. His debut album Endtroducing is quintessential and even in the Guiness Book of World Records.
He's touring in '24. Just so you know. 😊
mark farinas mushroom jazz series was something we'd sling on to chill out to after clubs.
for the record, DJ Shadow hated his music being called “trip hop” instead of ‘instrumental hiphop.’ he was literally a hiphop DJ trying to communicate thru the music rather than using vocals.
i think most of the Bristol artists felt the term was a form of segregation, as in “trip hop isnt hip hop,” or “trip hop is posh, and not urban.” they felt they were making a ‘version’ of hip hop music, and not a genre all its own. the term trip hop made it too easy for people that weren’t into rap music to overlook the cultural context the music came from. here’s Mushroom saying as much:
“When the Wild Bunch started,” Andrew ‘Mushroom’ Vowles told Mixmag in 1998, “we called it LOVER’S HIP HOP. Forget all that trip hop bullshit.”
in fact, this is a part of why he left the group: there wasn’t enough hip hop in Mezzanine for him, he felt his ideas were no longer valued
RIP Angelo Bruschini, guitarist on this album, died last October. Amazing talent, as with everyone involved on this album.
Shit, I'm sorry to hear. I met his playing through this record and loved every note he recorded on Mezzanine
The first 4 tracks are just perfection.
*all 11 tracks are perfection
The Dissolved Girl vocalist is a different person, Sarah Jay Hawley. But the the rest of the female vocal tracks are sung by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins. Up to you whether you want to save everything for "content" on youtube or not but you should probably dip into the Cocteau Twins catalogue at some point if you want to experience a little more of her ethereal voice.
For more Trip-Hop-ish recomendations, someone else in the comments mentioned Morcheeba, specifically the album Big Calm is very much from this same time period. The vocalist, Skye Edwards, has an incredible voice.
Thanks for these informations, I love Cocteau Twins and Massive Attack since 15 years now and I discovered with your comment that Elizabeth Frazier was also the singer for Cocteau Twins. So thanks a lot 🙏🏼
Keep goin gurl, u’re on the good way!!!
It is claimed that Trip Hop was birthed in Bristol, about 80 miles or so from me. One of the first road signs you see before you get off the motorway is for Portishead.
Bristol is one of the main through hubs to the North & South of the England and Wales, it is very rich with multiculturalism and is very well known for the arts and has always had a strong music scene with loads of venues.
Trip Hop shows you a melting pot of cultures all bought together through the love and communication of music. Throughout Mezzanine you can hear lots of flavours, Eastern, African, West Indies, European and it reflects that coming together of peoples.
I would say that Tricky - Maxinquaye would probably be the next one to check out in this genre, he featured on Massive Attacks first album (and a few other songs) but shone outright as a solo artist.
Trivia: Dissolved Girl plays in the introduction scene of Neo in the Matrix (1999).
For a classic Trip-Hop/Trip-Hop adjacent album you need to react to Morcheeba - Big Calm....
Also check out Zero 7 or Lamb....
This is Banksy’s best work.
You beat me to it. Great job 👏
Teardrop was the song of my late teens.. embodied how I was feeling at the time, evocative song to this day…❤
the ending of group four is so satisfying, yes.
In my opinion this album is the pinnacle of TripHop. Although ‘Protection’ is probably their best album. Saw them live on this tour and it was transcendent.
I prefer Blue Lines/Protection over this ngl
Man Next Door is one of the best tracks of this amazing album. The vibe and Horace’s voice are incredible.
I agree with Kira on that one, it's the one song I always skip. As for Andy, I disagree with her, obviously he is not so much a singer and more coming from a hip hop angle of performing and his voice really suits the songs he does, but his songs do have a very different vibe from the female song vibe. I like both vibes, I like to mix my fruits.
@@voiceover2191 Horace Andy doesn't come from a hip-hop angle, he's a reggae singer.
@@voiceover2191i think of Horace Andy’s voice to be androgynous. he has a beautiful voice that doesnt feel masculine or feminine. there are many male reggae vocalists who do a lot of “lover’s rock”-romantic reggae music with ‘sweet’ voices (thas how sugar minott got his name im told)
@@voiceover2191 literally what makes man next door a skip??
Tricky Maxinquaye is a must if this is your bag, even the self titled authority NME magazine had it as their Album of the year 1995 (a good year) & Trickys cover of Public Enemys Black Steel will make u wanna smash down walls n stuff 😁
Some of these tracks are growers. Like Man Next Door, after listening to this album since it came out, I really love all tracks now pretty equally
it has one of the most recognizable straightforward stories on the album yet just as haunting if not more.
One of my favorite albums ever! Never gets old
this album has been in my life forever and you can easily tell cause I have it on tape, vinyl, cd and mp3 😂😅
This album was basically handed out with every successful University appication back in the day! So good 😍 Trip-Hop is soooooooo cinematic. I love it.
ya dude, i mean if ur not imagining a neo-noir thriller with black-clad individuals walking in slow motion, then ur not listening to trip hop correctly.
Elizabeth Fraser dated Jeff Bucket after Cocteau Twins broke up. Her first UK hit was a cover of his dad Tim Buckley's SONG TO THE SIREN. Elizabeth heard Jeff Buckley was missing and presumed dead in the Mississippi River as she arrived to write and record TEARDROP. Her emotion for her missing ex filled the song with sadness
Well all the two girls are guests, so it’s his sound despite him not being very good at singing. It’s more about that dark sparse sound once the white “rapper” took over. Also, apart from Dissolved Girl, she is the Cocteau Twins singer (not sure the Dissolved Girl singer ever did anything else). Thanks for reacting to a life long fav album and check out Heligoland!
Next stop - Maxinquaye by Tricky, THE trip-hop album!
Great to know that you're getting more into Trip Hop!! It's a cool genre, I recommend to you two albums called "Sea" and "Eco" by Jorge Drexler, they're not that well known so you might want to check them out for yourself, not necessarily make a reaction video. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing!!!
up next on Trip-Hop land: TRICKY - Maxinquaye
great reaction!
I was recomended to your channel and I just had to check it because you reacted to one of my favorite albuns of all times. I''m glad the new generation have the opportunity to get it. There's a lot of good things more to experience. Enjoy the ride!
Omg can't wait to watch this... Incredible album.
Man Next Door is a '60s Jamaican reggae cover by John Holt, "I've Got To Get Away"...so a different feel than the rest of the album.
“Man next door” is such a glue/transitionary track between “dissolvedgirl” and “black milk”. I always consider it the trinity tracks on the album because of how they blend from one track to another, and the themes of different perspectives etc. all that to say, I like that you see some of those themes of male and female perspectives! just an enjoyable reaction regardless! It would be interesting hearing a revisit to this album down the line after sometime settling in
Since it's release I listened countless times to this album. It's in my veins just like Portishead first album. As a hardcore reggae fan it's impossible not to like Girl Next Door with Horace Andy. 😄
Man Next Door is a cover of an old reggae track about a dude next door, fussing and fighting and making the protagonist wanna move away from the chaos. Led Zeppelin drums and guitars sampled from The Cure amongst the samples.
Excelente reaccion Kira ☺
I like so much seeing you enjoying songs, i'm just like you!!! I love it! And this is an album i listen almost every week!!! I'm brazilian! Angel and Teardrop are my favourites!
I love watching your reactions to these triphop albums, its makes me very happy seeing someone else geek out as much as my self lol. Since you seem to like the darker, mooder side of triphop definitely check out Unkle - Psyence Fiction and Tricky - Maxinquaye like others have suggested.
I love how much you love this music and how you accept each change.
You must hear Elizabeth Frazier sing on the 'Cocteau Twins' magnum opus album "Heaven or Las Vegas'. The most beautiful and ethereal album IMHO ever recorded. After 30 years of listening to it I'm still not tired of it.
You should do a Sneaker Pimps reaction.
Try Endtroducing by DJ Shadow for a different flavor of trip-hop
Not really Trip Hop whether he was coined that for a single as that. He’s a samplist turntablist producer.
even though dj shadow considers endtroducing a hip hop album, because he was a hiphop dj & producer-it’s not a bad thing to hear it as “trip hop.” it’s instrumental & moody, with many midtempo songs.
and he did a lot with MO WAX, a UK label that became known to release trip-hop.
it’s important to remember that none of the artists (that i love from that time) wanted to be called “trip hop,” which grew to mean hip hop music softened by a lack of rapping. this album, Mezzanine, is Massive Attack adding more rock ingredients to push back at the “trip hop” sterotype, as soft music for people not into rap (most trip hop producers loved rap, which is why their beats were so legit to a rap lover like me in the 90s
I felt exactly the same way about all the tracks, but as my life experience grows, I can really apprecuate all the lyrics of every song. I love the album more cohesively than I ever have.
Love this energetic reaction! As someone who holds this album in incredibly high regard it's almost frustrating to watch reactors shrug and go "oh that was cool".
If you're into music production, this album is a must! So ahead of it's time and there's so many techniques to discover.
I got into Massive Attack because of the 1997 movie, The Jackal 😅 Angel and Dissolved Girl definitely hooked me from there, enjoy the vibes!
It’s so funny that you said the guy on Man Next Door has an annoying voice… it’s literally the exact same singer as on Angel, which was your favourite.
Oh also, I feel like you think there’s just one girl and one guy singing in this album… there are five vocalists, three men and two women!
You actually just made me like Man Next Door even more than I originally did.
You should check out 'Protection' by Massive Attack, it's different in style in some ways but it's mainly female vocally lead which you should enjoy, in my opinion it's at least as good as Mezzanine and possibly better.
for me one of the best albums of all time in any genre, loved it from the moment i heard it 25+ years ago and still just as much now. also check out burial's 'untrue' if you haven't already!
UNTRUE is a good idea.
early 20's at friends apartment, the gleam a subtle yellow, not that bright white light today. This album rumbling on 3 foot tall speakers while playing Magic the Gathering. It feels like a different world now.
good job kira
group four is such a good song, gets me so hyped
its chillout music, the best really. timeless.
Yeaaah!!! Hope you will make more trip-hop reactions soon!
My top favourite trip-hop albums :
· Moloko - Do You Like My Tight Sweater? - 1995
· Ruby - Salt Peter - 1995
· Morcheeba - Who Can You Trust? - 1996
· Mulu - Smiles Like A Shark - 1997
· Portishead - Portishead - 1997
· Crustation - Bloom - 1997
· Moloko - I Am Not a Doctor - 1998
· PJ Harvey - Is This Desire? - 1998
· Frost - Bedsit Theories - 1998
· Folk & Røvere - Kaustisksoda - 1998
· The Controls - One Hundred - 1999
thx for the list, five of these recommendations i do not know and have to check out always on the search for epic breakbeat, trip hop tracks
YES! My girlfriend introduced me to Ruby's Saltpeter, real hidden gem. We'll give the other ones a spin soon, thanks.
Could you hear the similarities to some of Bjork’s music? She worked with Massive Attack’s producer Nellee Hooper and Tricky who is another artist you might want to check out. Bjork kind of brought the Massive Attack trip hop sound to the mainstream. ✌
as far as trip hop goes, my personal favorites are third by portishead and blue lines. imo both would make for great reactions imo especially with how great the performances on blue lines are and just how singular third is as a record. it has experimental and krautrock influence like its a really realyl cool album
Honestly any kind of music also sounds good out of a good surround sound system. Especially one makes the individual instruments sound like they are in different parts of the room.
my heart this album
Great album. Bought it when it was released and saw them live in 1998 at Nottingham Rock City... blew the roof off, great gig.
omg you wouldnt believe how i got here...
Such a amazing album 💿
Definitely check out "Air-Moon Safari". Another 90's trip hop gem. Love the reaction!
Dissolved Girl's beat is so filthy I need to wear gloves before pressing Play....Fav track of all time for me
masterpiece
I will admit that I haven't pulled this one out in a while, but I know what I will be listening to later tonight. 😁
Another phenomenal trip-hop record is Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By by Nathaniel Merrieweather's Lovage.
Featuring Mike Patton of FNM and Mr Bungle on vocals. It is amazing.
Noice, mate! Not a huge M.A. fan but Teardrop is one of my favorite songs of any genre; pure poetry.
Mezzanine is supposedly the quintessential trip-hop album, and is probably Massive Attacks most critically acclaimed album. I really hope you will do Heligoland at some point too, definitely my favourite album by them. The track Splitting the Atom was my introduction to the band, It was on the FIFA11 Soundtrack which generally slapped a lot harder than it had any business doing. Safe to say I was hooked immediately.
I was supposed to experience them live at a festival back in the summer of 2020. For obvious reasons, that never materialized. I was so bummed out over that at the time cuz I had been on a massive trip-hop ride in late 2019. Since then, I've waited for another opportunity to see them, so when the same festival booked them for 2024, I was mashing the buy tickets button so fast. Hopefully no world-spanning pandemic will throw a spanner in the works this time XD
Got into them during the pandemic, got tickets for their gig in the Netherlands. Hoping for Angel, Group Four and Girl I Love You which might be their most overlooked track.
@@basslightyeahGirl I Love You is so good, that bassline just driving you through the whole thing.
Group Four live is an absolute beast. goes for prob another 3-4 minutes and its just more of that build up. Faster and more intense almost DNB by the end. phenomenal.
Fun fact their leader Robert Del Naja is thought to be the artist BANKSY
nice reaction! if you like trip-hop i would listen to Lamb, Earthling, Alpha, Red Snapper or even Fever Ray's first album
Saint Trilogy of electronic music.
Blue Lines, Protection and Mezzanine.
Massive for ever.
check out Death in Vegas the Contino Sessions, you will love it.. 1999, my first car, mix tape of death in vegas, portishead, bjork, queen adreena... happy days!
Every Death in Vegas album is worth spinning in my humble opinion, amazing records x
You should listen PJ Harvey Is this desire? If you like trip hop, and try maxinquaye by tricky
Check out the song protection!!!
I get the same feel from Man Next Door but for some reason I need a Mike Patton cover of this song ;)
A good classic trip hop album to check with Roya Arab on the vocals - Archive's Londinium.
Black Milk is a banger. And Rising Son is a real grower...stick with it!
I'm shocked Kira didn't like "Risingson", it's one of my favs MA tracks!
As an old fart from the UK it's so good to see you listening to the music I grow up with. Can't agree with everything you like - prog rock leaves me cold ! As someone who mainly listened to metal and punk so many people who liked that music also really liked trip hop. Massive Attack, Portishead and Bjork are long time favourites. Keep up the good work.
Kira to follow this you should go for 'Faithless - Outrospective', it's the next logical step on from Trip Hop. 100% sure you will be bouncing. p.s. Mezzanine goes best with a big fat spliff laying in a beanbag and I think you definitely need to do a relisten of this, maybe just too different.
My favourite album of all time. It's best listened to at midnight.
You should listen to "Protection" their second album, and No Protection, the remix!
no protection ❤
One of my top albums all-time with Dredg - El Cielo, and Tool - Lateralus.
You need to hear this album on a high end stereo with subs. You get a full body massage along with chills
Radiohead my favourite band too! I can see how it feels they may have been influenced somewhat by the trip hop scene, but their later stuff only perhaps.
Radiohead was more inspired by electronic music like Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada than by Trip Hop.
This is a classic sound, first time i heard this band i was like shocked why they are not broadcasted everywhere. Just fucking changed the music
this was an amazing album esp in regards to the time. Have you looked at Air yet?
.. aaand straight from Portishead's Dummy reaction - here I am.
Thanks for doing this!
#triphopnation
Group 4 is a security company in the UK, that does cash deliveries to banks among other things, if that helps explain that track.
I'm always stunned at what people haven't heard. This one's a classic.
'Protection' is a great track, too, but given you're (naturally) amazed with Elizabeth Fraser, check out the Cocteau Twins. (Or maybe FSOL's Lifeforms EP, if you wanna go for something different)
(Oh, and if you *want* lighthearted trip hop, Morcheeba's good)
Tune
Zero 7 - Simple things is a good album
Top 10 album for me, regardless of genre.
I can rant about how much I love this album for hours at a time! Especially "Dissolved Girl" and "Black Milk. This album is a rare masterpiece!
"Let's make it quiet and quickly" A+
"Flickering I roam" yessir!
If you want the maddest trip, then listen to Octagonecologyst by Dr.Octagon. . it's not trip hop. it's trippy hip-hop. other fantastic trippy hip-hop is The Beauty & the Beats by Edan
There actually is a light and chill trip hop album, listen to anything by Morcheeba, enjoy!
I lived in Bristol (and Portishead) for a while. Daddy G was a neighbour. He shouted at me and a friend once because he thought we were the smack heads using the empty house opposite his. We went in there to clear them out but he saw us coming out and got the wrong end of the stick.😆 He blocked my mates car in with his truck one day. Got into a bit of a barny then too!
100th Window is a masterpiece and worth a focused listen
If like particularly like dark trip hop like on Mezzanine, I would say also listen to stuff by
Portishead, Tricky, ALLFLAWS
Such a great album and group. You gotta check out Daft Punk's Homework next. Another 90's banger.
Teardrop was the best 👌 track. Liz Frazier is my heroine. Ominous album.
All the years of the trip hop movement ultimately culminated on this project
Now you know what banksy sounds like
Group Four, structurally speaking, is my favorite song of all time. Not talking lyrics, just talking production and composition... there's nothing like it. You need to listen to the Maxinquaye Album track Ponderosa... so so good, and you'll likely love it.
