  • @jasonkraley

“you are my angel” speaks volumes in “Angel” w/each band member appears in the group following the bassist.. his guardian angels turned out to be in a rush to keep up w/him.. “Protection” has a spattering of “situations” that each individual goes through at any given time amidst other situations.. its ending is one that has always “made me go hmmm”.. the empty baby chair in the back of the car: were we witness to a father deciding to abandon the situation he was in? guest singer Tracy Thorn was a giftedly haunting vocal addition.. “Risingson” is 1 of my favorites:the video did not disappoint.. again all group members present.. “Unfinished Sympathy” is literally an “oldie but goodie” that graced our airwaves in ‘91.. if i recall, there were more “members” in the collective of Massive Attack (at the time first called “The Wild Bunch”), but many of them made subtle appearances in the video following behind her (Shara Nelson).. the string arrangement is still their most triumphant in their discography.. i would recommend 3 additional videos of theirs that truly stand out: “Karmacoma” (from “Protection”), “Inertia Creeps” (from “Mezzanine”) & “Butterfly Caught” (from “100th Window”).. they are additionally/equally diverse yet amongst the videography styles of the 4 you reviewed.. as the most recent album, i would also add the video for “Atlas Air”.. a fascinating split screen impression of the past & the present using airports, “airline & airflight attendants” comparative imagery from pre-9/11 w/post-9/11.. it was a highly unexpected, bold (yet subtle) artistic statement in video i had never expected to see as a graphic designer & videographer.. thank you for taking the time to review these brilliant videos in 1 commentary presentation!

Massive Attack really brings me to my happy place. As someone who’s also very lyrically driven when it comes to music, it’s surprising how much their music effects me since it’s usually the music that hits more. If you’re interested, you may want to check out another act that worked with them named Tricky. He’s got a similar style but a bit darker. Very cool.

Blue Lines (1991), Protection (1994) and Mezzanine (1998), are among the greatest records of the entire decade of the 90's. The videos you watched are tied to those. The record "100th Window" released in 2003 is amazing depressing music. Perfectionism deliberately leaving the 90's behind.

Protection used to make me cry, and the switch of "I'm a girl and you're a boy" with "you're a girl and I'm a boy" always seemed nice to me, making it kind of universal... but that was years ago and I've since finally accepted what I knew for ages - that I'm trans... and have transitioned... and now it feels nicer, yet less emotional (like, I'm settled and comfortable in my feelings now, perhaps). Anyway, definitely a great track.

Karma Coma was and still is to this day my chill vibe, but Rising Son is extreme close second.
It’s almost impossible to not chill and love Massive Attack.

*Massive Attack* hail from Bristol UK (it's also where i currently reside) home of *Banksy* (you may of heard of him) and another band not far from here that you should *really* check out (they were alongside *Massive Attack* and a few other bands labelled as 'trip hop' artists -don't ever call them that though, as it's despised) anyway *Portishead* (the band not the place, it's just outside Bristol) Oh, *Massive Attack* had to change their name in the states to just *Massive* (as they became popular just after 911). Attack was seen as being a bit too soon (i think it lost them popularity over there) anyway check out *Portishead* mate.👊

I love the dub in massive attack…some of their songs or bits in songs are old Horace Andy

One of my favourite bands. All the videos match the cool of the band. They just know their craft.

if you believe in rumours, Banksy is in this band, and these are strong enough to be true

when your track has feel.. movement.. space and concept... then the video can become very strong and almost cinematic... the 90's was the best era for the music video

If you like Tracy Thorn’s voice, check out her band Everything But the Girl, and they had a hit with a song called ‘Missing’. Also, Massive Attack’s song ‘Teardrop’ with Cocteau Twins singer Elizabeth Fraser is phenomenal. EDIT: Just got to the but where you said you reacted to it. Will look it up :D 🫶

Black Milk and Group Four are two of my favorite, they feature Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins fame. Unfortunately they didn’t make music videos for those songs...
