I've been to Texas jail williamson county. I had a misdemeanor, I was scared to death but honestly the inmates were nice to me. I was so depressed and dehydrated an inmate bought me a Gatorade. I was blessed in all honesty.
Yep. That's pretty much how it is. As long as you don't cause problems for yourself or others around you, the inmates in your pod start to build up a relationship with you and you look out for each other
My son is in Bexar County right now. It will be 3 years in July. He has been found incompetent and also insane at the time of the incident. He's bipolar and schizophrenic. Almost 3 years just to get a court date. Please pray for him that he receives the help he needs. His court date is April 15th. Thank you for doing this documentary Reg!! 🙏❤️

All my charges were dismissed. I went to treatment.. and the court acknowledged, my crimes were comitted in bad mental states... When i was mentally healthy, i finished a college degree, when not ..i was a drunk out of control guy... Its important to get help ... Thanks for this ... Great insight...

born and raised from san Antonio Texas i pass by this jail everyday going to work. i never imagined it being like this from the inside. this is so sad and i want to help this men alex being arrested for weed is ridiculous. in the stare of texas correct me if im wrong the law has changed and now having over an ounce of weed you get arrested.
It’s 2 ozs+ is most likely going to jail. If it’s less it’s officer discretion. I got caught with a personal grinder full and a pipe. The officer simply gave me a paraphernalia charge rather than a possession charge which was super badass of him. I’m also Hispanic lol so not white. I was just talking to him with respect, because I already knew he got me so there was no point in trying to lie or anything. Just prepared myself to take my charge on the chin like a man.
You can get a prescription for medicinal marijuana in Texas, but aside from that, most people - even law enforcement - don't care to enforce that law too much from my experience.
As someone who has been to jail before, they left out the truly worst part of county jail: Going to court. Getting woken up with hundreds of other guys at 3am, having to be handcuffed on your hands and on your ankles, getting on the bus, waiting all day to see a judge, all while wearing the shackles, and all you get to eat is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some milk or juice. Then having to go back on the bus back to the jail at night after the hellish day, and repeat this court process multiple times until you get sentenced.
Waive your appearance. They can't physically make you go. It would likely be to your detriment to do that but at least you wouldn't have to go through all that court non sense. Lol
I been in bexar county a few times in my younger days I spent about a total of a year and a half total in their and I can tell you it's hell in a cell literally. Thankfully I've changed my life since but there's days I have flashbacks and it's hard to shake them.
Same here I went to Dallas county jail, in July last year. Literally my definition of hell, it was mentally exhausting, but I’m glad I have improved and changed after that! Happy to hear you’re doing much better than before!
I was in for a misdemeanor at one point due to one of the episodes of my own mental illness, and another time for a probation violation, in which I failed to notify my probation officer of my out of state railroad employment. Both times, I was in with those who committed crimes from aggravated assault with deadly weapons, to one murderer that was only just brought in, after being discovered in a 20 plus year long investigation. All the inmates of said offences in my block were surprisingly kin like to me and as long as none of us disrespected each other and the CO's treated us with all just the same, nobody really had much of any issue on either side and I made it pretty smoothly up to my court date in which the judge thankfully saw I was trying and let me get back to work with reinstated probation. Only got one more year to go till I'm off the hook for good.
38:00 that part really got me. More than blessed to be able to be in a house with my mother and siblings and have the little things in life I forget to be grateful for. Definitely gonna start praying more.
Its actually its pretty relaxing, considering youre living with another person for a long time, when your celly goes to court or leaves it feels nice having it to yourself.
It's great getting a cell to yourself, especially here in UK jails where 2 to 5 ppl a cell in jail. I had nearly 2 weeks in jail with a cell to myself before I got a new celly, I could watch what I want on TV and pee and shi t in peace, and I even knocked 1 out watching some fit birds on TV knowing I was alone 😂 obviously a few mins after the screw , guards last few hour check was done 😂 I remember getting caught knocking 1 out in a single cell open prison in the English countryside years ago after spending a few years behind bars and on my last 6 months 😂

When I did my first time in Pima county reality hits when those doors shut, it humbles you it does man you up and it’s just you and you only rely on yourself it sucks not to show weakness or the fact you can wear your emotions on your sleeve COs look threw you and if you don’t learn from the experience your just a lost soul. My advice is to stay strong and keep your mind busy and your time will go by fast and best part of advice just stay out of jail think twice. I love documentaries like this it really opens your eyes and now it’s been 10 years since I was locked up looking at this gives you a better appreciation for your life cause you do forget what it’s like to be locked up
You ain't seen the worst jail conditions till you go to Harris County Jail (Houston). It's over crowded all of the time, takes a couple of days to be checked and get on the floor. You end up huddled in large holding rooms so tight, you can't lay down. It's loud in those rooms, everyone is steady talking, and you can't sleep if you wanted to. The worst of it all is Inmates are dying in there almost every month.
RIP RICO!!! Died in Harris county jail begging for medical treatment. Never got any. Died alone in a cell at 32 years old. Had 5 kids, a mother, a father, and little brother.

They're lucky to have control over their own light within their cell. Some prisons have their cell lights on 24/7 with no way for the inmates to shut them off.
Welcome to San Antonio, Texas! I sure hope you were able to enjoy some other food and activities here other than our Jail. Great documentary! Most of us here in San Antonio have never been in that building and are blissfully unaware of what happens and what these inmates go through. While I am proud of Texas for being harsh towards felony assault, murder, child abuse, and drunk driving, I have always thought it's a bit ridiculous that we'll lock away a 19 year old who can barely make ends meet as it is. Gainful employment is necessary for anyone to succeed and that isn't possible from behind bars. We should all be looking to our Legislature to make criminal justice reform and bail reform a top priority in Texas.
That's true. I work at a county jail in Arkansas in the intake area and sometimes the housing unit we will put people in from intake be full. Good thing more are being released and have less people coming in.
As a 17 year old i was put in bexar county for 28 days and it did result in alot of tribulations for 3 grams of mj i was left with them making me take medication and a year after of probation , its the laws here that make things this way . im 24 now and i still cant wrap my head around why going to Colorado seems like a diffrent world than my home state next door

Also currently working on completing chronic pain support counseling training. Then, I plan on helping inmates and parolee’s. Untreated pain causes many personal, societal, and monetary damages. Every little thing is beyond important to address if we want to see a turnaround in high inmate populations.

Magistrate don't have wooden benches , or do they give u toilet paper . And then processing , booking and classification takes 3 days . Lol then your locked up with a over 100 inmates . Then the best sandwiches ever with soggy cookies . And slop . Lmao then shitting and showering in front of everyone was so much fun . Let's see oh shakedown was a experience getting naked on front of everyone even male officers ( turtles ) . But bexar county is hard time the worst of tdc is the welcoming to your new home . The bus ride and shackled to another stranger and having to go to the restroom in a bus that's moving shackled to another person . But the most memorable moment getting to hobby unit ... they make 60 inmates stand against wall in lines all around the walls . Then strip and stand there naked one by one bending down opening your ass and your kitty lips lmao . Then getting powder thrown on u and taking a nasty ass cold shower . Then the fun of them yelling to get ur shit . Your cot all ur scrubs then having to carry it to ur dorm and if you let it touch the floor you have a guard in ur face screaming and making everyone go back and start all over . Then how they believe prison is rehabilitating I went in with some stupid charge and came out with a criminal degree on how to break the law even worse . Meeting new connects wow and if u want the truth the guards are the ones that bring a contraband in . And have no shame in there actions and say ur the idiot that caught cuz ur stupid . But we are the criminals . Women got raped by guards at night and basically could get away with unimaginable acts . Then the tdc does not separate the medically sick contagious inmates from gen. Population . It's fun .. so much fun .

As someone who was charged with murder as my first charge and having to spend 5 days in this jail was kind of surprising atleast you didn’t have to wait a day and a half to just finally get to your cell and the CO’s are complete shit you definitely had it very easy
Putting someone in jail for an extended period for marijuana possession is incredibly dumb. No one gets jail for possessing alcohol. Not that my own state of NC does much better. Btw, defunding public mental health has consequences.

No lenience or mercy where a dollar can be made. Also, many prisons and jails in the US are private contract corporations and they lobby for harsher sentencing on capital hill so they can hold more prisoners and make more money. There is a conflict of interest there of course but the politicians get paid big money to give the prison companies (and many others) what they want. And now even the highest court in the land is in their hands. Much of this happens on the state level of course not just in Washington.

Wow, little bit over the top with what they throw people into prison for in Texas. The19 year old kid Alex had a small amount of pot, not even for sale, just for self use and he wound up in there. I'm an Aussie who has done a few years in prisons here in my younger less wise and wild days, but even though pot/grass is illegal here I've been busted numerous times over my 60 odd years with pot/hashish, growing plants outdoors and hydro indoors and not once went to prison for any of it. I was only ever fined, even back in the 1970s when they thought pot was as dangerous as other serious drugs, they still never jailed me for it despite me having a fairly serious record and many years of prison behind me
I spent 2023 locked inside a cell over at Tarrant county correctional facility in Fort Worth Texas. You have to adapt to it or you’ll be one of the few who’s time will go by extremely slow. I seen a bit of everything while there. I was sent all over the jail due to getting in trouble. I ended up in 59A. I was locked up with nothing but murderers. I was one of the few who didn’t have a murder or capital murder charge in there. I was facing a little bit of time but nowhere near 25 to life to even life with out parole like mostly everyone else. Me knowing that I was going to go home and still live my life with out losing it to the system is what kept me going. You can’t lose your mind in there because in jail/prison your mind is all you have.

I’ve been to jail around July, got arrested in mesquite, but transferred to Dallas county jail. 1 whole month locked up in jail, was mentally exhausting. As a person who has to be moving and doing something it was literally hell for me, I cried 4 times during jail, my cell mate was the best (nicest person I’ve ever met in jail, in general everyone was nice, kinda was expecting the worst however everyone cared about others health) he was trying his best to console me and calm me down when I almost had a mental breakdown due to be locked up and it being my first time getting in trouble. It is the worst for someone who has to be busy….because you don’t do anything other than, eat, sleep, and watch tv or listen the other inmates yell.

In Australian jails we are locked down for 20hrs out for 4hrs,once we are out though our cells are locked and you cant access them also at no point can a prisoner enter another person's cell like you can there...i found it strange that you can access cells with other inmates....everything else looks the same,we had showers and toilets in our cells too so tbh....i miss my jail shower,the water pressure was phenomenal 😂

No way he just got caught with "a small amount of weed" and ended up in jail like that lol. They MIGHT hold you until you get a court date scheduled but even then, if that's all it was I doubt even that.
My son is in a Prison in Texas for a issues extending from his mental disabilities that escalated during COVID 19 timeframe. There is a lot that happened from 2018 - 2021 that aided in his instability. It started with a 6 month sentence, to a bootcamp that went to a 2 year sentence in the juvenile system, to a 2.5 year stay in an adult prison right before he turned 18. My child was all of 5'6 weighing 130 lbs at the most. The funny thing is that the inmate can refuse medication in prison but can't in a residential treatment center. They do not get to see a psychiatrist on a regular basis. For example if they are doing group session & one person don't show up, the session is cancelled for all inmates, but is listed as given a session. In the state of TX it is not your intent that gets you in jail. It is whether a person "feels" that their life was at risk. For instance you can have a fake gun & point it at someone with no intent to harm them; but because they believe their life was at risk you can get several years in prison. That is exactly what happen to my son. His deteriorating mental state & break down of his family caused him to make bad decisions & gravitate toward even worst people that landed him in juvie. Because he couldn't stop fighting in prison pushed him to adult prison. The original medical recommendation of the juvenile system for my son was that if he did not get all the mental medical help he needed by going to a residential treatment facility that could handle all his mental issues, he would continue to spiral out of control & he did but this was not weighed as proof that he should have been placed in a residential treatment facility but it was used against him to push him further in the prison system.

Smoking pot is pretty much legal all over the country, the young Mexican kid doesn’t belong in jail for smoking weed.
Marijuana is not legal in Texas. Even medical cannabis is not legal.
If you have marijuana on you, you can be charged possession.

All my charges were dismissed. I went to treatment.. and the court acknowledged, my crimes were comitted in bad mental states... When i was mentally healthy, i finished a college degree, when not ..i was a drunk out of control guy... Its important to get help ... Thanks for this ... Great insight...

It’s 2 ozs+ is most likely going to jail. If it’s less it’s officer discretion. I got caught with a personal grinder full and a pipe. The officer simply gave me a paraphernalia charge rather than a possession charge which was super badass of him. I’m also Hispanic lol so not white. I was just talking to him with respect, because I already knew he got me so there was no point in trying to lie or anything. Just prepared myself to take my charge on the chin like a man.

You can get a prescription for medicinal marijuana in Texas, but aside from that, most people - even law enforcement - don't care to enforce that law too much from my experience.

As someone who has been to jail before, they left out the truly worst part of county jail:
Going to court.
Getting woken up with hundreds of other guys at 3am, having to be handcuffed on your hands and on your ankles, getting on the bus, waiting all day to see a judge, all while wearing the shackles, and all you get to eat is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some milk or juice. Then having to go back on the bus back to the jail at night after the hellish day, and repeat this court process multiple times until you get sentenced.
Waive your appearance. They can't physically make you go. It would likely be to your detriment to do that but at least you wouldn't have to go through all that court non sense. Lol

I been in bexar county a few times in my younger days I spent about a total of a year and a half total in their and I can tell you it's hell in a cell literally. Thankfully I've changed my life since but there's days I have flashbacks and it's hard to shake them.

Same here I went to Dallas county jail, in July last year. Literally my definition of hell, it was mentally exhausting, but I’m glad I have improved and changed after that! Happy to hear you’re doing much better than before!
I was in for a misdemeanor at one point due to one of the episodes of my own mental illness, and another time for a probation violation, in which I failed to notify my probation officer of my out of state railroad employment. Both times, I was in with those who committed crimes from aggravated assault with deadly weapons, to one murderer that was only just brought in, after being discovered in a 20 plus year long investigation. All the inmates of said offences in my block were surprisingly kin like to me and as long as none of us disrespected each other and the CO's treated us with all just the same, nobody really had much of any issue on either side and I made it pretty smoothly up to my court date in which the judge thankfully saw I was trying and let me get back to work with reinstated probation. Only got one more year to go till I'm off the hook for good.

Its actually its pretty relaxing, considering youre living with another person for a long time, when your celly goes to court or leaves it feels nice having it to yourself.

It's great getting a cell to yourself, especially here in UK jails where 2 to 5 ppl a cell in jail. I had nearly 2 weeks in jail with a cell to myself before I got a new celly, I could watch what I want on TV and pee and shi t in peace, and I even knocked 1 out watching some fit birds on TV knowing I was alone 😂 obviously a few mins after the screw , guards last few hour check was done 😂 I remember getting caught knocking 1 out in a single cell open prison in the English countryside years ago after spending a few years behind bars and on my last 6 months 😂

When I did my first time in Pima county reality hits when those doors shut, it humbles you it does man you up and it’s just you and you only rely on yourself it sucks not to show weakness or the fact you can wear your emotions on your sleeve COs look threw you and if you don’t learn from the experience your just a lost soul. My advice is to stay strong and keep your mind busy and your time will go by fast and best part of advice just stay out of jail think twice. I love documentaries like this it really opens your eyes and now it’s been 10 years since I was locked up looking at this gives you a better appreciation for your life cause you do forget what it’s like to be locked up

You ain't seen the worst jail conditions till you go to Harris County Jail (Houston). It's over crowded all of the time, takes a couple of days to be checked and get on the floor. You end up huddled in large holding rooms so tight, you can't lay down. It's loud in those rooms, everyone is steady talking, and you can't sleep if you wanted to. The worst of it all is Inmates are dying in there almost every month.

They're lucky to have control over their own light within their cell. Some prisons have their cell lights on 24/7 with no way for the inmates to shut them off.

Great documentary! Most of us here in San Antonio have never been in that building and are blissfully unaware of what happens and what these inmates go through. While I am proud of Texas for being harsh towards felony assault, murder, child abuse, and drunk driving, I have always thought it's a bit ridiculous that we'll lock away a 19 year old who can barely make ends meet as it is. Gainful employment is necessary for anyone to succeed and that isn't possible from behind bars.
We should all be looking to our Legislature to make criminal justice reform and bail reform a top priority in Texas.

As a 17 year old i was put in bexar county for 28 days and it did result in alot of tribulations for 3 grams of mj i was left with them making me take medication and a year after of probation , its the laws here that make things this way . im 24 now and i still cant wrap my head around why going to Colorado seems like a diffrent world than my home state next door

Every little thing is beyond important to address if we want to see a turnaround in high inmate populations.

Magistrate don't have wooden benches , or do they give u toilet paper . And then processing , booking and classification takes 3 days . Lol then your locked up with a over 100 inmates . Then the best sandwiches ever with soggy cookies . And slop . Lmao then shitting and showering in front of everyone was so much fun . Let's see oh shakedown was a experience getting naked on front of everyone even male officers ( turtles ) . But bexar county is hard time the worst of tdc is the welcoming to your new home . The bus ride and shackled to another stranger and having to go to the restroom in a bus that's moving shackled to another person . But the most memorable moment getting to hobby unit ... they make 60 inmates stand against wall in lines all around the walls . Then strip and stand there naked one by one bending down opening your ass and your kitty lips lmao . Then getting powder thrown on u and taking a nasty ass cold shower . Then the fun of them yelling to get ur shit . Your cot all ur scrubs then having to carry it to ur dorm and if you let it touch the floor you have a guard in ur face screaming and making everyone go back and start all over . Then how they believe prison is rehabilitating I went in with some stupid charge and came out with a criminal degree on how to break the law even worse . Meeting new connects wow and if u want the truth the guards are the ones that bring a contraband in . And have no shame in there actions and say ur the idiot that caught cuz ur stupid . But we are the criminals . Women got raped by guards at night and basically could get away with unimaginable acts . Then the tdc does not separate the medically sick contagious inmates from gen. Also, many prisons and jails in the US are private contract corporations and they lobby for harsher sentencing on capital hill so they can hold more prisoners and make more money. There is a conflict of interest there of course but the politicians get paid big money to give the prison companies (and many others) what they want. And now even the highest court in the land is in their hands. Much of this happens on the state level of course not just in Washington.

I'm an Aussie who has done a few years in prisons here in my younger less wise and wild days, but even though pot/grass is illegal here I've been busted numerous times over my 60 odd years with pot/hashish, growing plants outdoors and hydro indoors and not once went to prison for any of it. I was only ever fined, even back in the 1970s when they thought pot was as dangerous as other serious drugs, they still never jailed me for it despite me having a fairly serious record and many years of prison behind me

I spent 2023 locked inside a cell over at Tarrant county correctional facility in Fort Worth Texas. You have to adapt to it or you’ll be one of the few who’s time will go by extremely slow. I seen a bit of everything while there. I was sent all over the jail due to getting in trouble. I ended up in 59A. I was locked up with nothing but murderers. I was one of the few who didn’t have a murder or capital murder charge in there. I was facing a little bit of time but nowhere near 25 to life to even life with out parole like mostly everyone else. Me knowing that I was going to go home and still live my life with out losing it to the system is what kept me going. You can’t lose your mind in there because in jail/prison your mind is all you have.
It sad to see jail is a business and they lock people up for the smallest crimes (like weed possession)

I’ve been to jail around July, got arrested in mesquite, but transferred to Dallas county jail. 1 whole month locked up in jail, was mentally exhausting. As a person who has to be moving and doing something it was literally hell for me, I cried 4 times during jail, my cell mate was the best (nicest person I’ve ever met in jail, in general everyone was nice, kinda was expecting the worst however everyone cared about others health) he was trying his best to console me and calm me down when I almost had a mental breakdown due to be locked up and it being my first time getting in trouble. It is the worst for someone who has to be busy….because you don’t do anything other than, eat, sleep, and watch tv or listen the other inmates yell.

In Australian jails we are locked down for 20hrs out for 4hrs,once we are out though our cells are locked and you cant access them also at no point can a prisoner enter another person's cell like you can there...i found it strange that you can access cells with other inmates....everything else looks the same,we had showers and toilets in our cells too so tbh....i miss my jail shower,the water pressure was phenomenal 😂

My son is in a Prison in Texas for a issues extending from his mental disabilities that escalated during COVID 19 timeframe. There is a lot that happened from 2018 - 2021 that aided in his instability. It started with a 6 month sentence, to a bootcamp that went to a 2 year sentence in the juvenile system, to a 2.5 year stay in an adult prison right before he turned 18. My child was all of 5'6 weighing 130 lbs at the most. The funny thing is that the inmate can refuse medication in prison but can't in a residential treatment center. They do not get to see a psychiatrist on a regular basis. For example if they are doing group session & one person don't show up, the session is cancelled for all inmates, but is listed as given a session. In the state of TX it is not your intent that gets you in jail. It is whether a person "feels" that their life was at risk. For instance you can have a fake gun & point it at someone with no intent to harm them; but because they believe their life was at risk you can get several years in prison. That is exactly what happen to my son. His deteriorating mental state & break down of his family caused him to make bad decisions & gravitate toward even worst people that landed him in juvie. Because he couldn't stop fighting in prison pushed him to adult prison. The original medical recommendation of the juvenile system for my son was that if he did not get all the mental medical help he needed by going to a residential treatment facility that could handle all his mental issues, he would continue to spiral out of control & he did but this was not weighed as proof that he should have been placed in a residential treatment facility but it was used against him to push him further in the prison system.
They would put u in the shower at most jails. Inmates don't play that stinky shit.
Wasnt in there that long but a week i just slept the whole time waking up to inmates bringing my food 4 am😭
