Best Way to Connect a Phone (iPhone, Android) to a Mixer.

- If you want to plug a mixer into a smartphone (iPhone or Android) this is the best way to do that. ✅ All gear linked below*.
Sometimes you want to plug your phone into your mixer and send all the audio from your mixer into your phone and get the audio from the phone back into the mixer. This could be to take Skype or cell phone calls into your podcast or perhaps you want to record into an iOS audio app.
Because the audio output of a mixer is loud (line level) a normal TRRS device used to input consumer microphones like lav mics will not work. Those adapters provide plugin power and thus boost the signal going into the phone.
What we need is something that can take the hotter signal from the line level output and attenuate it. That's where the iRig2 comes in.
The iRig 2 is the perfect device for plugging in any line level source to an iPhone or Android smartphone. The addition of a gain fader on the iRig2 gives us even more control over the audio going into the phone. This way you'll be able to work with your normal levels on your mixer and send just the right amount of audio to the person on the phone without distortion.
If you want to do a mix-minus setup where all the audio from your mixer goes into the phone minus the person on the phone (so they don't get feedback) the iRig2 lets you easily do this by using its input and output. This is a great device for taking and recording phone or Skype calls via your mixer.

watched about 6 other uploads on this .... and yours is the BEST one that gets right to the point and gives the info we need. THANK YOU !!!!!!
Wow, thanks! Appreciate it, Junior 🤘
Ray, this video is a podcast saver! I can't believe how easy the iRig2 made it to record quality phone and Skype calls. Thank you for this, your Mix Minus video also helped me dial everything in. Thank you thank you.
Awesome, thanks Brian!
Spent hours to find the correct information on other videos but thanking to you I found what I needed . BIG THANK YOU 🙏
You're welcome. Glad you found it.
It's tons of these videos, yours is the only one that was really helpful.
Thanks!
Yw Bro. You got a gift, you simplified things for us beginners. These other videos don't explain things to well.
Thanks, that helps a lot and is a great compliment!
Not sure about your issues with your Samsung but one thing to note since your profile says DJ is that this device is mono not stereo. To get a stereo input I think you have to use a digital connection.
@@RayOrtega it would be nice if you did a video how to setup adobe aduition to use mix minus
BEST description yet! Thank you.
Thanks Ray, your explanation is very clear and right to the point, thanks again for your help!!👍👍
Hi Ray, I've been using this for many tasks. It works well for recording Skype and phone calls, live stream to Instagram, Facebook and Periscope too. It solved the problem of blowing out my phone due to line level causing my phone to shut down. Best investment so far outside of my minimalist equipment... Not sure the gain has made a difference but that may be a later test... Thanks for all your great videos...
+Jeffrey Stipe awesome. Thanks for the feedback! I experienced the same crash via iOS with another device. A story I told on my podcast The Podcasters' Studio. Glad this is working for you.
Love this guy! precise, to the point, charming, and pleasant to the ears! Keep up the good work Ray, cheers!!!
Wow, thanks, Michi! Very kind.
Hi I'm in south Africa Sir I'm looking for this irig2 device for Facebook live streaming in our church, currently I'm using trs to trrs which is not reliable,,, please help me sir
Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks for the awesome vid. Your channel is growing fast! Keep posting such quality vids😊
thanks!
Just did my first Mix-Minus sessions, using the iRig2, my VO microphone, a Mackie 802 mixer, and a two channel digital recorder. Works great.
tim b awesome. Congrats!
Thank you very much, I was a little disappointed about the irig mostly because of latency while playing guitar thru those fx apps, but now I can use this to do mix minus phone calls, super, fantastic, without clicks and noise et cetera
I subscribed immediately because your presentation is so friendly. Felt like someone I knew in real life was talking to me, especially when you mentioned the autofocus of your camera. Thanks :) Will be tunning in.
Thanks, David!
Perfect instructional/informational video. Concise! Every question answered/shown. Thank you.
Thanks, Mark!
Good stuff as always, Ray. 👍 Going to be ordering one of these, so thanks for providing the link to make it easy!
+Robert Klimkiewicz, Jr. thanks! See the comments for a possible cheaper solution but I haven't tried it (Podcast Hotline) yet. Still, I like the way the iRig2 is built and some of the added features.
I saw that, but like the control of the iRig2. I was planning to buy one at some point, your video pushed me over :)
🤘
Thanks buddy! I just order it and it was the thing i was searchin for since couple of days. Sound is very nice even if i put some adapters. It works with every recording app on ios or android. Nice job dude thanks! 👌👌🔥🔥
Stellar! Thanks for letting me know.
I love how thoroughly you explained everything. Thank you🙏🏾
This provided all the info I needed and more😎
Thanks for letting me know!
Thank you Ray i've spent hours and hours trying to play music from my mixer using the Rode SC4 connector to live stream on Facebook live and its almost impossible to go from to quiet to distortion. I will now purchase the Irig2 to get the line level.
Thank you Ray . Great video. Your audio mic is excellente.
Hey buddy thank you very much for all your hard work and your videos I really appreciate your time and great work spent on your videos and the details you put into them great work.
Thanks, Jacob.
Short, clear and precise, thx.
Thanks!
Last time i couldn't make it work! I'll give a try one time to see if it works. Im using a Xenix Q802 USB Mixer and the Sam Broadcaster Software
Very clear and helpful video thank you , I'm trying to record my dj set onto the phone , can you tell me what recording app would be the best for it?? Tha k you ! 👌
Always helpful. I really appreciate your work and willingness to connect on social media - Jeremy
Your mixer has stereo output and you plugged that into mono input - very smart.
What? Aux outs are mono and you can put stereo in but your phono will only take mono so it's moot.
Thanks so much for posting this. It has really helped me.
Glad this helped, Mark!
Excellent information. I could solve my needs. Thanks
Gonna get an iRig 2 for my Clubhouse setup. Thank you!
I've been using the Tascam iXZ for the same purpose. It has a combo XLR jack and accepts XLR with or without phantom power, balanced or unbalanced 1/4" instrument or line level inputs. It requires 2 AA batteries for XLR or instrument in, but not for line level in. It has a 1/8" TRS out headphone stereo jack with a volume dial to get audio to the interface or mixer. I have it semi-permanently wired into my Scarlett for the last two years connecting an iPhone.
The 1/8" TRRS cable works with the TRRS to Lightning adapter if you have an iPhone 7.
I want to point out that the TRRS connection for IOS devices is Left, Right, Ground and Mic where for most Android and other devices, they use the older Nokia standard which swaps Ground and Mic. Not all devices and adapters work well together. The iXZ definitely works with IOS devices
!
Awesome. Thanks for the info and for watching!
This video was very helpful! I want to record video of me DJing from mixer to iPad, so I can later upload. Where can I get longer wires, and which one? Thanks in advance!
Perfect I can charge my phone and send sound to my live stream. Worth it!
How can we send it to live stream
LOVE THIS VIDEO.. THANKS
Thanks, Ricky! 🤘
Irig is a *Must Have* for any Musician or streamer.
Great video, I'm trying to record live video with a Samsung S7 while recording audio from a mixer .
Music videos in a sense. Would this work? If not, what would?
Worked perfectly thank you.
Cool! Thanks for watching.
Hi Ray, love the episode on irig ! I want to know if I can use a digital audio interface with my phones, I wish to do stereo recording to my smartphone videocam. I do have a zoom h2n, but both my windows 10 mobile (Alcatel 4S usb-C) and my android phone (Moto E5+) can only recognize the Zoom in SD mass storage mode. Do you have any tricks up your sleeve for smartphone videography dudes?
Ray great video and well explained. Have you tried this with newer iphones which come only with a single lightning connector? thanks
Thanks! Yes, you simply use the included 1/8" to lightning adapter that comes with it and start enjoying that dongle life 😂
Excellent video Thank you ❤
11/18/2020 Thank you for this information.
Can i connect audio interface (output) to the SE through the iRig 2
Great tips, thanks 😊
Hoping to use this as a sampling source from the audio in the smartphone to the Toraiz SP16's input.
Thanks! Will this work from mixer to iPhone? Trying to pick up sound via nice to my mixer to my iPhone.
Great Video! I would like to record videos on my iPhone to stream or upload online and connect the line level stereo out from my mixer to an iRig. Which iRig product will serve me best?
Is it overkill to purchase the iRig Pro Duo I/O ?
Thanks. I use the iRig 2 for this podhelp.me/iRig2Zon One of the higher end ones might work better if you are looking to get stereo into the phone but often times the phone is the limitation.
I just plugged in my audio interface (Scarlett 2i2) directly into my android through USB!! And it was recognized as an external audio source automatically, rerouting all input to what was coming through it. All it took was one of those (OTG?) USB Adapters that allows the big USB end to be plugged into a micro USB port. Didn't expect it to actually work so seamlessly: I've been having trouble for weeks, trying to get my Tascam DR-05 mic to line-in to the Phone successfully (it kept just randomly cutting out, with all the TRRS adapters I tried...) but this way, it just.. WORKS. Haha. Hope this helps someone!
Did you get mono or stereo audio? It also works here but it comes only mono.
@@CrisGuitarBR saya sudah mencobanya dengan antarmuka audio Behringer Xenyx 302USB yang saya sambungkan ke Samsung Galaxy J2 dan hasilnya memang bisa terekam stereo atau 2 track input mono.
Bought one on Amazon. Didn't work, sent back. Great QA!
Bummer, how were you trying to use it? What's the setup.
Great video as always.. Instead of a mixer is there a way for this work using a H4N Pro or H5 instead?
Thanks, Patrick. You could output the Zoom into the iRig and then bring the iRig back into the Zoom but you run into one issue..mix-minus. Those devices don't have the ability to control what goes out of the output, it would be the full mix and in that case you would be sending the audio back to the person on the phone which is no good because they will get a feedback loop of themselves. However, see this video which shows you a way to do it with those recorders. Note that it doesn't require the mic I show in the video if you don't mind sending the on-board mic of your computer or phone to the caller ruclips.net/video/LoswJ5Vawas/видео.html
What about running the H4N to the iRig then to the iphone?
Am I able to send module instruments/mixer with an 1/8 cables into the iRig? If I were to get an adapter for 1/8 to 1/4 for the audio input? Or could I just plug the 1/8 aux from the module mixer that feeds all the other modules and into the phone directly and record those sounds through my android phone with the correct recording app to save those too?
Can I use it for recording songs while playing my electric drums? I mean, I want to record the sound with my iPhone. Do I need a gadget like this or any other to be able to carry it out?
good job thank you !!
Thanks!
Thank you.
You don't need something like an iRig for high-Z guitars to go into a phone. You just need the little adapters and turn your mixer's volume down on the output you're using. If you do need to reduce the gain after the mixer, you can do it with a passive in-line headphone volume control.
Thank u for the great info can my kindal tablet work the same way?
Great post! Thanks. Can I use the phone to stream a line level audio signal from my mixer to my conference line?
Thanks, Roger. I haven't tried most systems but in theory when you use the iRig it becomes the microphone (the source plugged into) so whatever app you are using on your phone should see the iRig as its input.
Exelente video.
thanks
Nice video. Thanks.
hello Ray... i know you have a couple of videos on how to do so and a great review video of the Zedi 10... but i am still trying to learn this mixer and im still trying to understand a mix minus using this set up with this mixer... is it possible you could do a video showing how to set up a mix minus using the irig2 and the zedi 10 please? ive looked everywhere i could to find an affordable option to be able to take phone calls from my android with the Zedi 10 and have drawn blanks each time... if you can, great... if not, i completely understand... thank you in advance
Hey Ray, I want record my mixes into android Samsung A5 , what software you advice for recording ?
Thanks in advance.
Does this also.work well for live streaming if I want to perform live on FB or IG
?
If I want to play guitar or lead a guided meditation and send the Line Level from the mixer into the phone will the irig do that as well? Would I simply jack the mixer output into the Guitar input of the irig ????
Good video. Question... I want to record music videos on my iPad. I have an RME Babyface Pro interface and will TotalMix FX to mix audio. (I don't know what video maker app to use.) I bought an Apple Camera Connection Kit so that I can connect my interface to the iPad. What resource do you recommend to help me get underway here? What video maker app would you suggest? Thanks!
Hello Ray, i have a problem with my Behringer XENYX Q502USB.
It is constantly sending hiss to my computer and i have no idea how to fix it.
If set my gain as you did in youre tutorial and disabled all fx or compressor functions.
I am using the Devine BM-1000 microphone.
Thanks,
Ilse
So if I plug a Pioneer DDJ through master out in to the setup can this work for Periscope?
thanks for the great videos. Wondering if you could direct me to an answer to a problem I've got. I record Skype and Zoom calls with a Steinburg UR22Mk2 Audio interface. It works great with 2 mics but sometimes I want to add in some music by just plying an iPod or Android into the 2nd input, It doesnt matter what source volume or input gain combo I use, the music sounds aweful. ANy suggestions or videos that demonstrate a solution.
Awesome advice mate
Thanks!
I have the irig HD2. Will this device work the same?
It should. That device just connects using the lightning port instead of the older headphone jack.
Very helpful man🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
i cannot tell what cables you were using, whether mono or stereo (does it matter)...were the ends all quarter inch? or did one of the cables have a one-eighth? Your response would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
All the cables and gear are listed in the description. Thanks.
Hi Ray, loved your video but can you tell me will the I rig2 work with open camera as I make a video while singing to my backing track. I have an adaptor trrs to trs female plugged into the headphone socket of my Samsung phone and it's coming from the outs on my mixing test.
The problem is I only got 1 good recording onto my phone and now I can't get the music from my backing track to my phone at all now, you can just barely hear the music and I'm wondering would the I RIG2 solve my problem.
Dave.
great video, thanks..will the video camera on the phone use the signal from IRig2 when recording?
I think it depends on the app but most should since it's really just a TRRS input which is the same as earbud mics
@@RayOrtega Ray, I'm on the road and at the last minute was tasked to do a quick interview for a documentary. Since I don't have any of my usual gear with me, I followed the ole' USMC motto "Improvise, Adapt and Overcome". I picked up two very good quality sounding Insignia lav's ($50 a piece) at Best Buy that are designed specifically for Camera's, Go Pro's and of all things Smartphones. Since my Smartphone is all that I have, I plugged in one of the mic's to make sure that it would work just in case I could not find a quick field mixer. Called Guitar Shop and they had a Beringer MicroMix 400MX. This 4 in 1 out cigarette size mixer looked like it would do the job. I needed a 1/4" cable to route the signal out of the the mixer so I picked up an unbalanced male/male cable. At the recommendation of the GC rep, I picked up the I Rig 2 as to bring the signal from the mixer into my phone. I hopped next door to WalMart and found a 66" camera tripod that also came with a Smartphone attachment (the one at Best Buy was double the price and only 30" with NO attachments). After hooking everything up, plugging both lavs into the mixer, my ultimate goal was to just plug in the I Rig, hit video record on my Smartphone and expect this wonderful sound to be coming back when I play back a couple of test video recording. Nope! Not a sound. The video looked great but there was no audio. Checked and rechecked the switches to make sure the mic's were on, and their batteries were in correctly. After a couple more failed tests, I had to go with just one lav on the my interviewee. Any idea what could be going wrong?
@@toney5043 It doesn't sound like you got mics that work with mixers. Typically lav mics don't interface with mixers because as you suggested they are made to work with other devices, mainly ones that supply plugin power like a camera, phone, etc. You need adapters for lav mics that do not have XLR connections/run on phantom power in order to give them the proper amount of power they need, devices like these ruclips.net/video/h9NUUsBe2lU/видео.html but if you're using a smartphone and lav mics, the better solution would be to just go with dual system audio where you record the interviewee's audio separate from the camera and sync it all in post production or you can look into a device like this which is meant for an interview setup with lav mic and a smartphone however you want to consider if the cables would be long enough for your setup podhelp.me/rodesc6L-BH
Thanks Mr Ortega. Will the iRig connect a band mixer monitor output (foldback or aux output) and then let me use the phone to bluetooth stream the output to Bose headphones. Which app on the phone would I use? I want to get my monitor mix to Bose noise cancelling headphones. Will latency be a problem? Thanks, Peter
Hi! Very nice explanation, thanks!! Someone says that iRig2 only works with iPhone, which I find weird since it's just a TRRS connection..Do you confirm that it can work with any smartphone (I have huawei p10, so Android) ?
I just bought the irig pro 2 and I'm trying to use it to bake bass covers on my Android phone but I'm lost in how I'm going to get it to record everything together. I have behringer audio interface, can I use that along with the irig? I'm basically trying to record my audio and video at the same time.
excellent job.
Thanks, John!
Hi Thanks for this vidéo. I use an iRig since a long time. Do you know how to load a iPhone X and to plug an iRig at the same time ?
Thanks! Are you looking for this?? ruclips.net/video/ZiP_k55FEUs/видео.html
Great video, and I've set it up so that it works. BUT. When using the phone, I get that really horrible clicking that happens if you're too close to a speaker....I bought the mixer just to be able to make clean interviews, but this might kill it. Do you have any tips on how to get rid of it? It seems to be coming through the line, as it makes little/no difference how far from the mixer the phone is. Ideas?
It's probably the phone transmitting to cell signals. Try setting it to airplane mode and using wifi when possible.
thanks Ray! bypassing a mixer, direct line out from a Yamaha Clavinova digital piano through iRig 2 into an iPhone/iPad, will it be still in stereo ??
The iRig is mono so unfortunately no but this can also be a limitation of phones as many have mono input as well although that might be different with digital connections they now have.
Will it work if I conect to my android tablet to android phone cause on both devices I got dj pro app where I can mix songs I want to use the phone as mixer
Thanks for this great video. I'm trying to do this on an iPad with a lightning connector and couldn't get it to work as shown with the iRig 2. Do I need to do install the AmpliTube software to make this work?
You're welcome, John. I just double-checked this with my iPhone and it works great with the lightning adapter. You don't need the AmpliTube app but maybe the app you're using on the iPad is not recognizing the input. What app are you using and are you sure that you are actually getting audio out of the iRig2? Is there any other device like an audio recorder that you can plug the iRig into to confirm that you are sending audio out before you try different apps? Try that first.
Since you asked, I recorded a follow up video today where I show my test of the iRig2 to Lightning and it will be released in the next couple days. Make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications via the bell icon or the prompt so that you don't miss it.
Ray Ortega I’m trying use Facebook Live so this should be a slam dunk. I’m taking a tape recorder out from my mixing board and trying to run it directly to the iPad for better sound quality. I know there is signal coming through the cable as plug into my iPhone and record on Voice Record.
I’ll check your new video. Thanks for your advice.
Good luck, I made the video, specifically based on your question, that shows this working via the lighting cable. ruclips.net/video/ZiP_k55FEUs/видео.html
Great I need to see your video because I just tried my Irig 2 with a lightning cable adapter on my iphone X and it's not working.
So iRig2 cannot be used instead of Wirecast for proper audio for livestreaming, correct? I wasted my time trying to use OBS via my Alesis mixer to do just that. As I understand your very helpful video, the iRig2 simply facilitates the use of the iPhone for Skype in a recording, but not necessarily for live streaming?
Yeah the key is that the device is for TRRS inputs, the kind you find on smartphones. Some macs have TRRS in/output but if you have a USB mixer you'd probably just use the USB. The Alesis into OBS in theory should work, I mean the Alesis is just your audio input at that point but I haven't tested it out. If you were trying to send a mixer into a phone to live-stream via an app then this would be a good use case for the iRig2
You explain very well how to use the device and it's features, but what are you running out of the mixer? You running left/right out with a "Y" to a monoral cab to go into the guitar input on the iRig2? Or are you running a stereo 1/4" to monoral 1/4" from the aux out on the mixer to the guitar input on the iRig2? Every video on-line seems to skip this hookup tutorial.
Will this allow me to use any 3.5 mm jack earbuds to my mixer for direct audio monitoring when I talk through my mic? I have to use earbuds for certain occasions basically, or if this would not allow me would you know how I could connect it to work? I tried using the jack adaptor but the sound comes extremely distorted, I use Yamaha MG10XU mixer I am new to this and have no idea what and how to get it right. Thanks in advance
Thanks dear
At the 30 second mark, what app are you using to see levels and record?
So I'm trying to use a smartphone or tablet as a sound board to streamline my drops while podcasting... will the irig2 help do this? Also any suggestions on a soundboard app? I'm currently using ijingle pro
can you use this to hear in ear mix?
Hey Ray! So with this iRig2, I would be able to plug it into my Zoom F8 along with my microphones, and the skype caller would be able to hear us all on the mics? Cheers!
I think you can sort of hack it. If the F8 allows you to control what channels output from the 'sub out' then you can send all the microphone channels and exclude the Skype channel so that the person does not get their own audio returned to them. This would be a mix-minus with the F8.
Thanks for the vid, Ray! I just ordered an iRig. Was trying to come up with a solution. Didn't think about iRig 'cause I had guitar input stuck in my head. I have some videos on my FB under "Williamthesoundguy". I hope the next vids I post (FB Live) will sound more gooder! LOL!
Cool, hope it works well for you! Let me know.
I don't have Line In/Line out on my Touchmix 8 . I can only use the xls L/R outputs or the Phone Jack on back of mixer. Could I use the Phone out?
Great review about the iRig2. I love this simple device which enables me to record my e-drums straight into my smartphone.
However, I can't get the first two XLR channel inputs return back to the AUX / FX sent, whereas all other input channels perfectly work fine. I have a Behringer X1222USB mixer and the iRig2 connected to the MON/FX Sent, which perfectly works fine, except I can't get any output from the first two channels where my TD-50 module is connected through XRL.
Any ideas ?
Hmm that's odd, I find with those Behringers it's usually some combo of the buttons that select what goes to the output/main mix but hard to say. If it's not that, are you aux faders turned up on those channels and try and check those channels are actually working by monitoring them through the headphones and make sure you that you are powering any phantom powered mics connected to those inputs.
Ray Ortega I need to check that and figure it out by myself. It’s to find this specific information, either online or in the documentation. I guess it must be the routing from the TD-50 to the MacBook (it’s going through Superior Drummer 3 on the computer). For some reason I’m not sure if the USB interface has something to do with it or not. I do get output from the TD-50 through the headphones on the Behringer, but it’s not controllable through fist two channels on the mixer where the TD-50 is connected via XLR .
Hi! What's the app you're using? I did not understand from your other video about this iRig2... THX
Hello- I am a newbie to audio gear and am teaching fitness classes online. I am having a hard time figuring out how to get music from my iPhone into the mixer. The volume levels coming in to mixer from the phone are greatly reduced. I have narrowed it down it something in how the phone is connecting- this after trying 3 different mixers and every kind of cable/connection I can think of. Just got a tip that I need something interfacing btwn the phone (digital) to the mixer (analog). I can only find stuff online designed to input into phone from mixer vs other way around. Does the setup in your video work in reverse? (using a high quality samson mic into mixer as well, mixer output to my macbook, then main output to zoom, headphone output to a speaker for me- have all the other pieces working fine). Thank you for any advice!!
Thanks a lot.
Thanks for watching
for some reason only unbalanced plugs works going from my irig to my mixer. You recommended balanced. How am i still getting a good sound with the unbalanced plugs ?
I have a question please !! What’s the difference between this one and the I rig the first one ? Can I still connect my mixer to the first one ?
Thank you for the video. Can I use the iRIG to record a phone call capturing both sides of a convo?
I don’t have a mixer.
That's what I'm showing in this video. The iRig goes into a mixer and then you can record from the mixer into a computer or recorder.
Would the phone receive the input from the iRig as mono or stereo. Lets say you have a sound that alternates playing between left and right ear every second or something. Would that effect be lost in translation from going to the iRig to the phone?
Mono. Don't know if it will sum and stereo source but it might.
Hi Ray, will this working to do live church services using iphone and yamaha mixer? Line out on mixer at 4+ or -10? And using a RCA cable?
So I recently bought I rig 2 for my ddjsx2 controller and I'm just really lost it's working sort of the only problem is that the weird buzzing noise even when I'm not playing a track I'm trying to do Facebook live but Idk what to do
Hi, can i record a video clip from my andriod (one plus 5T) with audio from a mixer through irig 2? Please help.
Hey it help me a lot but I am still confused...can I connect irig 2 to mixture to make a musical video ...through my phone..
yes but the irig2 is mono only ..
