What's Wrong With the Behringer Q802USB Mixer and How to Fix It

  • Опубликовано: 7 авг 2024
  • When using the USB as your input and output, you can't hear audio in both directions. Let's fix it! ► All gear linked below*.
The good news is I found a few ways to use this mixer to monitor both the incoming and the outgoing audio. Despite this limitation, it's still possible to monitor both sides!
    Option 1 - Mix-Minus
The first solution would be to remove the USB from the audio chain. One of the nice features of the Q802USB is that it provides you with an auxiliary channel (labeled FX Send). Using the mixer in a classic mix-minus setup enables you to monitor the audio in both directions because you are not relying on the USB connection.
Audio from the computer is being sent into an available channel on the mixer and audio from the mixer is being sent out the FX Send, minus the channel that has the computer audio on it. To understand how this works and to setup a mix-minus for yourself, see my complete guide and video.
There is another nice advantage of going with a mix-minus setup that actually brings the USB back into play. because you are not using the USB for Skype or other VOIP software, you can record all the audio from your mixer into audio recording software (Audition, Audacity, etc.) using the USB connection. This is great option for recording your interviews, podcasts, etc., on the very same computer that you are using Skype on.
Option 2 - Splitting the Headphones
The next option is sort of a hack but I was very happy that it worked. If you still want to use the USB as your input and output for Skype, you can monitor both directions by using a Y-cable to split the 1/8" connection of your headphones to 2 1/4" leads that will pull audio from the phones (Skype) while at the same time send your own audio into your headphones via the Main Out.
The Main Out on the Q802USB always receives all analog inputs. Therefore, by plugging one lead of your headphones into the Main Out, you will be able to hear yourself. At first it may feel strange to have yourself in one ear and your guest in the other but with time you may actually come to prefer monitoring the audio this way. You can more easily pick out which side contains any audio issues.
To create this split headphones setup, you'll need a female to female adapter that fits the size of your cabling. In my case, my headphones have a 1/8" male lead and the Y-cable has the same. The adapter allows me to make the connection between the headphones and the Y-cable.
Once you've created your split headphone cabling, place one 1/4" lead into the Phones output and one into the left side Main Out.
In the USB routing section, leave both buttons in the up position if you want to also use the USB to record into software.
    Option 3 - Splitting to a Recorder
Another option is much like the last except in this setup, you don't need the female to female adapter.
Use a Y-cable like before, plugged into the mixer the same way (one lead into Phones, one into Main Out) and plug the 1/8" lead of the Y-cable into an audio recorder.
From there you would monitor the audio on the recorder itself which is receiving both sides of the audio.
    Option 4 - Software Monitoring
The final option is the least favorable. If you are using Skype recording software that allows you to monitor the incoming audio such as Audio Hijack, you monitor both sides of the Skype call.
When you enable monitoring in Audio Hijack, it sends back your own audio albeit with some latency.

    Hello Ray, Thanks for the video, after reading almost all comments down, the video inspired me and As an amateur user, I also would like to share my observations and experiences for other friends ;
I bought it 3 years ago for the it's price and little size. Before I had same but 12 channels one.
This little mixer is sound quality wise quite good , almost zero hiss or distortion and very capable for both recording and small gigs/ rehearsals. Note: if you have any noise , firstly please check the empty input channels' gain knobs.
    a) For music recording ( up to my knowledge and experience)
it is only 6 channels , 2 balanced mic input and 2 +2 quarter inch stereo inputs which can be used for electric piano or drum or any other electric instrument.
2-TRACK RCA IN and OUT stereo connections have no use for recording thru USB!.
First of all , the USB link between the computer and mixer is only directional. With the USB , it is very easy to connect these 6 channels as stereo 2 channels to your laptop-any S/W .If you are using windows you will need Asio4all s/w , With Asio4 connection is absolutely zero latency ( I worked with both win7 and Win10 without any problem ).MacBook is even easier.
And most tricky part of this mixer is " USB/2-TRACK" buttons.
When the "TO MAIN MIX" is UP signal transfer is from mixer to laptop direction.
When "TO MAIN MIX" button is down , sound signal is "only" comes from laptop to mixer, now you can listen from mixer (thru main or monitor) only what you play from your laptop.I think Behringer designed it in this way for the musicians , first record and monitor than listen what you have recorded to see the result.
Second button called "PHONES /CTRL RM" , if it is DOWN , you can monitor what you are sending from 6 channels to your laptop, this button doesn't effect on signal transfer from mixer to laptop.
If you use it for little gigs or rehearsal , it is 6+2 channels , those two RCA 2-Tracks can be used as extra input (without gain control) , you will here them thru MAIN MIX-OUT.
48 volts phantom power works perfectly, I have Studio Project B1 , it works w/o problem.
I am using it for 3 years , there is no over-heat problem even s/t I forget it as plugged over 24 hours.
Negative point, the AC adaptor is an hassle for me, but it is not a big issue . I wished Behringer would put it in the mixer.
There are also 2 extra functions I never used and I have no clue about them,.as "Stereo Aux Return" and " FX Send".
Summary , For the usage for limited purposes above mentioned , it is very nice product, very practical, small, easy to handle.
Of course there are limitations as control room outputs and phones level are controlled thru same knob but TBH even I never needed monitors , I use phones.
Note: Please correct my comments if I am wrong . Regards to all.

Cannot thank you enough for this effort / video. I recently bought the same mixer, but was lucky to find this video which helped me understand this particular mixer well and also led me to see your other video on having a mix minus setup which works perfectly for me. This video has certainly helped many people like me who are new to mixing. Thanks for this noble video. Great work.

Five years on and this is still relevant! I've had the Xenyx Q1002USB for 6+ years and only just bumped into the issue of the USB not accepting two-way traffic! (How had I never noticed?!) Fortunately I had a UCA222 lying around that added into the chain and I've now rigged the mixer for mix-minus - I like the bonus of having two audio inputs for the computer. Thanks for saving me from tearing hair out for too long!

The easiest Way to monitor your input as well as getting audio from your PC is to plug in an RCA cable into both 2 track in and out, and pressing the USB / 2TR to phones / control room button down. That way, you can monitor everything you're putting into the mixer, as well as what's coming back from the computer via USB.

Re my comment below. Just found a cable among my cables that splits the signal and...it works :) So I could record my second part while monitoring...how great! The split signal is a mono signal but that doesn't matter when the point was to be able to hear what I was recording while listening to the playback. So, my Q802USB was not a waste of money and, once again, a huge thank you for taking the time to make this video.

  • @rongerman1

Thanks Ray. Just watched your video and it has answered my problem about the exact point you shared. I don't understand much about mixers but I bought this entry level Q802USB to get myself started started recording to my laptop. But I was wondering what I was doing wrong when I couldn't hear the playback when I wanted to record a second part. Frustrated because I simply don't know enough to work out how to get to where you took us. I haven't tried your solution yet as I have only just watched your video but it has been a great relief for a pensioner on a budget to find a solution and to have people like yourself sharing your knowledge with us. Perhaps it would have helped a little more to show the actual split cables clearly as you mentioned splitting the cables but I haven't grasped this just yet. Thanks once again and best wishes.

Great video Ray. I have been using the q802usb for voice recording and did not have exactly the same problem but when you reviewed some of the fixes you used that got me thinking and I was able to solve the problem. I had developed a low sub 80Hz hum that apparently is common and was able to correct that by turning off the output / monitoring which apparently was causing some type of internal feedback. Had I not watched your video would not have figured that out so thanks.

I had a similar problem, but it wasn't a USB mixer: I have a Eurorack 802, and for the interface I re-purposed a UFO 202 that I bought to rip vinyl.
I was struggling with latency while monitoring through my DAW of choice, so I actually incorporated another mixer (Xenyx 502) as a "headphone-mixer".
The interface inputs come from the 802 tape-out, through the ufo202 and out to the 502 tape-in. Then the master out L/R of the 802 goes to one of the stereo channels of the 502.
This allows for great vocal monitoring while adding tracks without any latency issues.
I'm sure there's a mixer out there that does this, but I had all this Behringer gear, and came up with this solution -however in-elegant!

I thought Iwent grazy and maybe had to download a driver for my MacBook Pro to solve the issue but when I saw this video I knew that wouldn’t solve the problem. I hope I can return the Behringer XENYX Q1002USB mixer and buy a iRig Stream instead of it. That new product of IK Media (just came out after Namm 2020) does it all: sending stereo out from my mixer/recorder to the iRig Stream, led controle on it for the gain of the iRig Stream and monitor audio from the other person when using zoom.us Through the iRig Stream l can monitor what I send into it and monitor the audio from the one on the other side through the headphones out on the iRig Stream + you can talk back through a lavelier mic or monitor and talk back at the same time with such a gamer headset (phones and mic). An iPhone or iPad can be used as a webcam. Robin from Molten Music Technology has uploaded a great review and tested with succes which I want to use it for. All the best.

@ted smith if you are setting up the mix-minus like in this video, you need to have a line-in input that will take the 1/8" connection. You don't use the USB for mix-minus but you can record the whole thing on the same computer using the USB.
So for a mix-minus, the output of the computer would be set to the headphone output and you would connect that to a channel on the mixer. The mixer connects to the line-in input and only gets your microphone channel via the FX or Aux send. Then you can hear what is going out of the mixer as well as coming.

Hi, I just connected this to my Mac, and in the button config in this video the inputs indeed do show up in the usb codec input and are metered in the sound app. One thing I tried was to connect my speakers to the control room jacks. In this config you do not hear the mixer inputs through the speakers, but you do get the pc audio. So I have achieved the Teams audio out through the mixer, and use the mics plugged into jacks 1 & 2 in my case, as the ins, so it’s operating as a 2 in 2 out sound card in this mode!

I left my psychotic narcissist photographer behind, so unfortunately I had to walk away from some 5Dmkiiis to a humble Canon EOS-M, but I honestly enjoy the midrange quality and not sorting through shutter blasting. It also fits in my front pocket.

Great video! Quick question for you. In regards to in house speakers/sound set-up.
I currently have my mini-mac hooked directly up to a TV/Monitor (built in speakers) and this xenyx q802 usb to my Mac. What sort of solid sound yet light on the budget type of speaker(s) would you recommend that plug directly into mixer? My Mac in and out are taken up completely.

  • @jskenley73

As you have indicated regarding the mix-minus option, there is the inherent compromise resulting from the mono signal of the fx/aux send. For my purposes, this is absolutely unacceptable. I've ironed out some of the issues I mentioned in a previous post, but I could benefit from a mix-minus setup even if it was the mono split to both ears (or however I should state that).
I've come across some tutorials on RUclips in which the mix-minus setup is covered employing the use of a Behringer USB interface. You are likely familiar with them. They have RCA stereo in and out. Of course this would involve 1/4" male to RCA stereo split from fx/aux send to the interface, then RCA stereo out of USB interface back into mixer as an input. Of the several tutorials I've come across, there has been no mention of the issue where you would only receive in one ear.
I trust your knowledge and experience much more than mine, and honestly would rather hear your input than the guys that made those tutorials. Maybe it will contribute something to this discussion as well. I probably should note that I tried the mix-minus with Skype running on a secondary computer and had the issue with sound from each end in only one ear (not using the interface). I managed to get Skype working perfectly in some other manner, but I am still having issues with some VoIP applications, hence the interest in mix-minus.
So, basically my question; is it possible for this sort of interface to split the mono fx/aux out to where the mono source is heard through both cans? I've tried several other convoluted attempts to no avail. My knowledge is very limited here, so I can't help but be a bit skeptical. The $30 for the interface isn't so much that I mind giving it a try with no answer to my question, but thought I'd run this by you for some input, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks in advance for any response, informative or not.
Edit: I watched back through the video and took note of what you pointed out about the audio input/output selections within Skype. Using a device such as the Behringer USB interface that I've mentioned, this gives an additional option in Skype. I am referring to it as a USB interface, but it's technically a USB sound card. With two sound cards, you will get a second option in Skype. It is a cheap device, but this isn't all bad if someone has interest in testing this out, then upgrade to something higher quality if you feel that it would benefit you.

I have a question, asking for doing research for a friend. In a Live streaming set up. Could you plug the computer from the stereo out of a motherboard and plug it into the Line-in on the mixer, then on the Mixer output, do a stereo out to the Line-in of the Motherboard and hit the ctrl/phones and be able to hear your mic, and your PC in the headphones, see the volume in the LED lights and have the PC still hear everything your sending into the Line-in?

    Hi,
Ive been trying to connect two M5 Rode condenser microphones via the left mono line in 2/3 and 3/4 on the q502usb preamp for a stereo sound. Recording a piano.
Ive tried for hours to get it to work on a portable, with no success.
Ive looked into every drivers, recorders software, tested up down to main mix, etc.
I see on a picture of the q502usb preamp, to plug a guitar in the mono lines, i would need a DI100. Is it the same with little micro condensers? The vendor did tell me to just plug them there with the XLR to 1/4 L mono and that would work.
    Ok thanks for any insights.

I'm considering pairing this with a Heil PR40 dynamic mic. Being you have a dynamic mic I heard that you have the gain about 90%. Do you feel this would supply enough gain for a Heil PR40 without having to use a Cloud Lifter or Fethead pre amp with it? Also do you notice any latency when using headphones to monitor your voice in real time as you record? Thanks!

The mixer has two mono inputs and two stereo inputs (potential six output channels total) through USB can you send out all individual channels. So for example if I have a keyboard plugged into Channel 3's stereo inputs, a bass guitar direct box coming in on channel 2, a vocal mic on channel 1 and an acoustic guitar on channel 4. Counting the L/R split on the keyboard, that's 5 inputs. If in Pro Tools I want to send each of those inputs to their own dedicated track, can I do that with this mixer?

I bought it second hand, and it seems loose / and my audio (from PC) cuts in and out, also the phones control room volume control adjustment does the same thing, should I replace it? Hi Ray, thanks for your useful tips.
I have a question for you: I am sending in channel 1and 2 the stereo output of a Roland TD17KVX drum module and in channel 3 and 4 the audio from an iPod. I want to do two things with these inputs: 1) I want a specific mix o the Roland module AND the iPod music to hear through the headphones output [ a bit more Roland and a bit less music] for monitoring when I am playing - 2) I want another specific mix of the Roland and iPod inputs to go to the pc, in this case the DAW is Audacity [a bit more music and a bit less Roland] to record the drums I am playng + the audio track.
I can't find a configuration on the Xenyx 12022USB that allows me to set two different outputs at the same time.
Do you have a solution to my problem?
    Thanks!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  3 года назад

Hi, Kamarillo. Sounds like you want to get different levels for each output. Try setting up your mix for how you want it to sound in your headphones (more drum less music) and then try to get two separate channels into Audacity so that in post production you can set the levels how you want for that mix. You'll need to pan the channels hard left and hard right so that you can get a stereo channel in Audacity that you can later break out into mono parts (left for drum, right for music) and set you level. Or if stereo is an issue, just record channel 1/2 into Audacity and add the music track after.

This may have been brought up before, but browsing RUclips comments is the pits.
Is there a reason not to achieve this by going out of the FX Send and into the 2 Track In? I got my mixer in yesterday and that was the simplest solution for me. I'm able to hear the audio from the PC and monitor myself perfectly through this method.

    Hello,
I'm running 4 mics through a ZEDi 10 mixer, out through USB into Audition. Everything seems to be great but I can't figure out why my waveforms are so small in multitrack.
The recording is there, I hear it easily on playback, I can see teeny-tiny wavefroms, but nothing that I'd be able to effectively edit.
Any idea what I've gotten wrong here?

What would you recommend for a mixer with similar specs to the Q802 but without this dual monitoring issue?
Going to be mixing audio from a mic over XLR, a PC via 1/4'' jacks, and a PC via USB, would like to be able to hear the final output over my headphones with the ability to toggle off monitoring the mic if I need to (not a necessity but would be nice in case I start to hate my own voice again) and send it to a PC via USB at the same time. I'm a complete novice when it comes to audio and mixing so searching out as much help as I can get!

I have a question about this mixer (well actually the 1202 modell, but its pretty much the same, just more channels). I am in a Band, and we have parts of music that we have to play through the Notebook, due to the lack of a keyboarder, so its a Wav-File. This has to be send to the PA, that also is connected to the singer. But we got our Drummer some In-Ear-Monitoring device, so he can hear a click for the metronome in addition to the Pre-Recorded Wav-File, the Singer, and the Guitar/Bass. But we got a big Problem: When we plug in The Guitar and Bass, we get the Guitar/Base sound also put out to our PA. Also we get the Click. Is it possible to set up this thing, so that we can have a dedicated Track for our Drummer, and another one without the click for use running at the same time?
