If you want to bring audio like phone calls from your phone (iPhone or Android) and then send your good microphones and/or additional audio back to the caller, you can use an iRIG2 for a high-quality connection with complete control over your audio.
To do this setup, you need to create a mix-minus. Here's how to do that • How to Setup a Mix Minus
This will allow you to send all the audio connected to your audio mixer to your smartphone so that the caller can hear your good microphones and any additional audio clips you want to play for them. If you did this without a mix-minus, you would also be sending their own audio back into the phone, creating an annoying loop of their own voice. The mix-minus prevents this issue because you can control which audio gets sent to the phone and which audio does not.
When connecting a mixer to a smartphone, you need some level of attenuation of the signal because you are sending line-level (very loud) audio into an input (the microphone input of the phone) that is looking for a low level sound. The iRIG2 will provide the necessary attenuation for connecting the two pieces of gear.

Thank you Ray! Simple and straight forward. Better yet, it works!
I did this set up this week to record videos for my music page. Works like a charm. Thanks for the information.
Thanks a lot Ray. I been wanting to get this right for a while. Finally got it right.
What if i buy irig 1 and record live stream on RUclips with my Iphone 8 plus,
Please suggest irig 1 is best or irig 2 or any other for good recording with live video with the help of mixer
does this work in the reverse, sending phone audio to line in mixer
Ray was a HUGE help! Just to make everyone aware, NOT ALL LIGHTENING ADAPTERS ARE CREATED EQUAL!!!! I had purchased a few 3rd party lightening adapters that would allow me to charge my phone and listen to headphones at the same time and these DID NOT work in this setup. I was getting 0 audio from ANY call source. the iPhone phone app, Skype, FB Messenger.... none of them would send audio to the headset via my 3rd party lightening adapter. When I used test apps like RUclips, Games on my phone, or a Music player the 3rd party adapter sent audio to my recorder just fine. I emailed RAY, and he was SUPER FAST to help me understand where my issue probably was, and it turns out he was correct. I purchased a few of the official APPLE lightening adapters and BOOM! Works like a champ. I would also like to add, as it's a little unclear in this video.... that the official apple lightening headphone adapter is both an INPUT and an OUTPUT. It's able to take audio from the phone and send it to your recorder, but it's also able to take audio from your recorder and send it BACK to your caller. (Input)... this is where the irig2 and the mix minus setup comes in handy. If you are just trying to get audio off of the phone and have it recorded, a simple 1/8" male cable to 1/4" male cable into your mixer or recorder will work just fine. YOU ONLY need the irig2 if you want a mix minus setup. To clarify, the Mix minus is where you take all of the audio into your mixer from all sources, and then you user your mixer to MINUS out the callers audio so you can SEND BACK all of the audio EXCEPT the caller... back to the caller. This allows the caller to get your CRYSTAL CLEAR audio from the mixer, without their own voice. It will prevent a feedback loop from occurring, as well as allow the caller to hear you form your microphone instead of using the microphone on the phone itself. It will yield a much clearer result for the caller, and for $40 you can't go wrong. I got mine in stock at a local guitar center for the same price that amazon had it without having to wait for it to ship. If you don't want a mix minus setup, and you just want to straight cable your phone to your recorder you can absolutely do that too. As a fellow podcaster... I like having multiple options for recording. I always order double the cables I need, and I love having a fall back plan for wiring just in case my original plan fails me. In the video, you will see RAY wire his mixer back to the iRig2 and run it into the 1/4" port with the guitar icon on it. THIS IS THE MIX MINUS FEED BACK TO THE CALLER. This video is confusing if you don't realize that the headphone jack on your smartphone is both an input and an output. This is also why those cheap headphones with a microphone wired into them work. You can talk into them (INPUT) as well as hear the caller (OUTPUT). This is also why you need a lightening adapter that supports both INPUT/OUTPUT and the 3rd party one I purchased was just an OUTPUT. there really is no good way to tell, so the best way is to just buy the official apple lightening adapter and you won't have any issues. I can't tell you how much time and money and effort was wasted figuring this out. I hope the info helps some others! And thanks again RAY for helping me get to the bottom of it super fast.
Super glad it all worked out, Donald. Thanks for the kind words, have fun podcasting!
Awesome, you gave the info that nobody mentioned and pointed out clearly anywhere essoecially that irig2 is meant to work with iphones. I am having the same issue on iphone 11. Tried 2 adaptors but no sound goes out from iphone so I guess my adaptors are not original. Will buy an original and see if it will work...thanks!
@@RayOrtega Hi there , what is your email address pls so I can ask you a quick question of help help help 😀😅
Only one man in the planet to show that irig 2 is working with iPhone 7...am gonna buy the irig 2 with iPhone 3.5 adapter...thanks for proving...great work
Thanks, Dinesh.
Does the irig2 do all of the effects with the Apple adapter? Like, will it do effect on an app to an amp like it would if it were a 3.5mm jack?
I saw the irig 2 plugged into an amp using a 1/4 inch and you could use your phone as an effects pedal. Does this setup work for the new iPhone/iPads that don’t have headphone jack?
@@TheCoryAyers Sorry can't say, I don't use it that way. I have plugged in my bass and got effects through the Amplitude app. Basically you are just putting an analog signal into digital, any FX that happen, happen in an app so it should work for most things as long as the amp recognizes the input.
Best video. Thank you for simplifying it!
Yes, almost bought the iRig HD-2 (im a guitar player), now getting this "cheaper" option :--) Thanks !
Hi. My question is, how can I record a video and audio from the jammer together. Look, I bought the same things, to no avail. Should the last connection be stereo or mono? Thank you
Amazing! Thanks for the simple explanation
Finally! Thanks!!!
Hello Friend!
I have a simple question to ask and I would like you to answer me kindly.
Is it possible to send a stereo audio from a mixer to IRig 2 and the sound comes in stereo on the iphone? I've tried to do this using stereo cabling but I can't.
I think an ideal device would be the IRig Stream, correct?
This is all perfect. I’m trying to stream Facebook live utilizing this setup, yet I want to be able to charge my iPhone X at the same time without any interference to the audio. Would a splitter work for this by plugging this setup to a the splitter where it has the iRig 2 into the headphone jack and a power source going into the lighting port and then the splitter adapter going into the iPhone X? Do you have a recommendation for that where the audio would stay clean while charging the phone? Thank you sir!
How come I can't hear my signal through my headphones when plugged into irig2
How do you use an android phone to do live recording with the iRIG2
What was the name of the recording app you use?
Hi there. Thanks for the vid.. A question. Do you prefer connecting the aux via the lighting or via a jack adapter so that it will go directly into the headphone entrance of the phone?
Cool beans … thank you. I really appreciate you making this video. Very helpful 🎉😂😅😊
I have an ipad 2 which I use to produce music. But the headphone jack is broken now. Do you think what would work?
Nice work dude!
Great vid.
Thanks, Rob.
Hey ray I bought the Yamaha MH10XU ; it’s a usb mixer. Is the irig2 compatible ?
Second question, if i plug the phone into the mixer, will I be able to record a podcast on my computer while simultaneously go live on fb as well ... or will I have to choose between the two options in an “either or” scenario ?
I've watched this like 18,000 times. that's what the view count is so high.. Thank you - correct cables coming soon.
Ha, thanks for the views...all of them! ;)
@@RayOrtega I did get it working - last question, does the gain on the irig2 control the internal or external volume?
Hello Ray, I have the behringer 802( you have it in one of your vids). I have the Irig2, the IMic and A TO OF CORDS. I have tried all of your suggestions and still nothing. If I plug my phone into one of the inputs I can hear music. The issue I have is I can’t get my microphone sound out to my iPhone X. The Irig2 doesn’t help either. I called music tribe and after being on hold for 47 minutes, I was told the the lowest level mixer that they had capable of taking phones calls is the 2200 and that mine was not close to that. Can you help me? PLEASE 🙏
How do I stop insane frequency’s
Hi there , I still don’t get how to use this Irig for my podcast to receive calls with my usb mixer . I’m not studio savvy I’m afraid . Can you help pls ?
Hi sir I saw other video they used 25db fentronix to connect irig2 to mixer wat is the different?
Great vid, so I have ddj sx3 out into guitar symbol of irig2 then into my android device, what android app do you recommend for the sound to playout to obs stream ?
Is there a certain apk we use to get the audio into the phone. I’m using an iPhone X but I’m still getting the phone inbuilt microphone. Kindly assist
Hello, will it record into phone in stereo?
How would you set this up, using the Samson QH4, in conjunction with the mixer and IRig2? I'm trying to setup a live video stream using Switcher Studio and need the caller's audio to go out the the Ipad that Switcher Studio is running off of as well as sending it back to the phone.
With iRig2 I have latency on my android phone (totaly absent on my iPad). I was wondering if connecting the iRig2 through the usb C of my phone would lower the latency
You just saved me $60 bucks!!!!!
Really helpful, thank you.
Can you monitor the audio being input into the iPhone with wireless ear buds?
Hi,sir if i just want to record everything playing from the phone to the mixer inside the phone itself & monitor directly in the mixer using headphones it does work right? Meaning i just connect the cable from aux send(mixer) to the guitar logo on the irig? Thats it right?
I have the I rig to that I wanna use at my church for Facebook live streaming what exactly would I need is a mixer necessary and if so which one and how do I do that can you help me thanks so much
This guy is amazing!
Thanks, Raffaele!
Sir, just want to know if l needto turn off the Irig2 effects to work well oon my mixer? Thanks a lot?
tysm helped me out!
Does the first iRig device work on iPhone X with the lightning to jack adapter?
I use a Carlsborg mixer very similar to yours, but I've been unable to get a clean audio to live stream in my studio, Pls confirm I'll be using the FX send option and recommended cable
Tony, can I hook the iRig 2 directly into the line input port of a 2012 mac Book Pro? I take a mono signal out of my Mackie mixer, line level, into the iRig2. I see the mixer outputs , but do not hear anything in the iRig2 before hooking it up to the Mac Book Pro.
Can I use a microphone and a headset with out the mixer on my phone. For podcast?
How to get audio am using basic I rig connected with I phone via lightning while using 1202 beheringr mixer, m confused please help
Does this work for tik too with adding reverb to ur vocals?
What about if you need to charge you iPhone when you doing live. Streaming I buy. Many splitters but don’t work becouse splitter don’t. Support Trrs this splitter are made only to Charge and listening maybe you Can recommend something
Im trying to send every input(vocals and music instruments ) in my mixer out to my phone for online video broadcast. Can this iRig help me to accomplish it and how? if so, will you please do a detailed video on how to plug it up and get it up and running?
how do you connect two phono rca to the irig which adaptor goes from two phono input to 1 quarter inch jack for the irig
What you’ve shared is interesting. But how can I get good music audio onto a conference call line so my telephone listeners can experience decent audio? Thank you in advance. I’ll be looking out for your response. Regards.
What's the best way to take a call and run it through my scarlet 4i4 and record it into my software along with the audio I am recording with my mic.I want it to function as a third mic essentially. Is this impossible?
Okay Ray I can hear the phone call in my headphones on one side but the caller cannot hear me talking to them on the microphone, if I put them on speakerphone they can hear me of course. Any explanation as to why they can only hear me that way? Also their audio is being recorded in Auditions.
Hey so what cables do I need to connect on to a mixer with the iRig? I dont want to be left with only audio on either the left or right side.
Start with the phone - if you have a phone with a 1/8” 3.5mm female jack, plug in the male 1/8” [3.5mm] on the iRig to the female plug on the phone. If the phone just has a Lightning jack, you’ll need a Lightning male to 3.5mm female adapter.
Next, you’ll need two 1/4” stereo male cables (male at both ends, two rings on the tip).
For the headphone 1/4” female Jack, plug in one 1/4” male stereo cable, with the other end going to the FX Send 1/4” female Jack on your mixer.
For the “guitar” side of the iRig, plug in the other 1/4” male stereo cable to that 1/4” female Jack on the iRig and put the other end of the cable (also 1/4” male stereo) in the line-in 1/4 female slot of whatever channel you want to use, to bring in that sound. For my podcast, I’m on Channel 1, so I put my iRig on Channel 2.
If/when I’m talking to someone on an interview, I want every element of the program to go into their hearing via the phone EXCEPT their voice…hence the “mix-minus Ray talked about. The caller gets the mix, minus their own voice…so on that channel (2, for this example), FX send is completely off.
So, those two cables plus, if necessary, an adapter for the phone, and those connections, and you’re set. Always do a soundcheck with your caller and if they hear THEIR voice on a delay, you’ll need “mix minus”. Hope this helps.
Wanting to use this for a small band set up to facebook live. Bass, acoustic, one mic and a cahon. Using UI24r mixer. Any thoughts?
Can this work by recording your self with this in line
Does the Irig2 setup you described also work with the Behringer 502 Mixer to android?
Will the mix still come through if you record a video ?
Question: When I plug in the iRig2 per the video and hit record in my app, what gets recorded is still the live sound in the room v. the mixed sound from mixer. Have tried coming out of the main outs as well as the headphone jack out on mixer. Will it only work via aux send? Seems like it shouldn't matter... Have tried Bossjock app as well as Spire and same issue... Any trouble shooting thoughts? Thanks,
Would you pls answer ,can I use Irig 2 for live performance on the android through the mixer ?
Thank you for this video. I am using a streaming app for my podcast. I need some sort of wire that allows me use the irig for two headphones. What do you recommend?
a stereo headphone splitter will work and are pretty easy to find
Hey guys, does anyone know how to convert the Mono AMP output at the top into a pair of stereo speakers? I want to listen to what im mixing while I DJ But its only coming out of 1 speaker. Im not using a mixer. Your help would be amazing thank you!
Where on the mixer do I connect the 1/4 in cord from the iRig2? Is it the Aux In or Aux Out?
Hi Ray, thanks for the informative vide..would you say lightning cable option improves audio quality, compared to 3.5mm jack?
Can't say for sure but my instinct is that it won't make a difference to the quality.
Hello, i bought an adapter with two slots for earphone and charger. But it records on my earphone’s mic and not with my instrument. I tried removing the earphones but still does bot record directly from the instrument using irig. My irig works with my iphone 6 without using an adapter. What’s wrong here?
Would it not work better to patch the Monitor Send to the I Rig2 instead of the FX Send? That way you still have the FX Send free for Effects if you want them. I use a Reverb FX on my voice on my Mackie Mixer, so I don't really want to lose that. Monitor Send sounds like a more logical choice.
Hey I need help. I record my videos using irig2 from my drum module into my 2019 ipad and use the video camera (mainly for budget and convenience). I usually connect to the headphone jack but now the headphone jack isn't working. I tried connecting via lightning adapter but no audio is recorded from my module. I just get audio from the standard ipad microphone. I tried messing with the mono settings on the ipad and switching the FX on setting on the irig, still not working. Please help. What am I doing wrong? I know it's a simple cheap setup but I don't have the time or budget to change it up. Thanks
It's not much help but I experienced the same with an iPhone 5S and then a 1stGen SE. Worked for a bit at first then just no signal coming in. Currently trying with an iPhone 8 and adapter, but can't get it working either. It's maddening...
Is it work with live streaming or gaming pubg for example or i have to use only one app to get high quality? I hope u understand me
Ray, great video. After much debate (with myself) I bought a ProFx8v2 yesterday. This replaced a gen1 2i2. I was amazed at the better power/amps delivered to monitors/HPs, but the noise floor in audition is around 36db. I can cleanup in post, but are you getting that kind of noise? Overall, are you happy with the mixer and are you using it with the 2i4? I see that's on your desk too. Thanks for any feedback!
Sean, I have the V1 ProFX and it does a pretty good job. The 2i4 does a really great job cause it can push my SM7B at almost full preamp and it's as clean as if I connect a Fethead to it.
Is there a way to this but wireless? I want to do live stream and be able to walk around with out tripping over the cables.
do you need to have a mixer for this to work?
How about connecting iRig2 to the new iPad Pro 11”?
I have a behringer umc404hd interface. How could I hook up the irig 2 to record phone calls?
Why is my iPhone always shut down while playing guitar on irig ?
Thank you
Do you maybe know, can I use it with Huawei P30 Pro? Thanks
Hi ray I do have a question. I have a tc helicon go vocal but used to use it on my iPhone 6s but now I own a iPhone se 2020. I bought a lighting adapter a few months back and decided to use it. Well I plugged the lighting adapter in and hooked the other end from my tc helicon into the 3.5 end of the lighting cable well. I turn it on and the mic doesn’t work but the headphones do that are plugged into the tc helicon. Do you think it might be a cheap lighting chord that doesn’t allow this cause may the inside female piece that plugs into the back end of the lighting chord doesn’t support the type of plug that’s come from my tc helicon? But also the external mic turns on from the phone?
Are you familiar with the iRig Stream? If I understand correctly this device will do the mix minus directly to my iPhone from the mixer. I’m a piano teacher giving live online piano lessons through my iPhone 11 Pro Max (Using video chat like Zoom, Google Duo, Webex, etc) and am trying to provide better sound by having a mic in my grand piano and another in a headset mic for my voice instruction. These would connect to a mixer that then connects to the iRig. Is the iRig 2 or iRig Stream better to use?
I want to record keyboard play video with my iphonex - but the sound shall come directly from the keyboard (line), not the iphone x mic. How do I do that?
Hiya. When using it for live streaming i.e DJ set into the phone, is it supposed to be able to live monitor from the headphone socket (from focusrite into irig2, into phone)? The one I have I can't hear anything from the headphone output live but when I play it back it's recorded the sounds etc? For now I'm planning on testing it before hand, then keeping that level on the gain and live monitoring from my focusrite soundcard for when I go live. But I'm wondering if my one is faulty or that it can't live monitor when live streaming and only live monitors via the apps? Hopefully this question makes sense. Thanks in advance.
I use irig 1 with lightning adapter to connect iphone 8+ but it isn't work , please help me know why , tks so much
Can I use my original IRig to record from my mixer?
Hi Ray. Would u be available for 5 minute zoom call. I am trying to figure this issue out for my online radio show but am still running into issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hope all is well.
Can you use the irig recorder 3 app the same way?
Can I do this same setup with the scarlet 2i2 without using a mixer? I have a RODECaster pro at home I use for mix minus, but my podcast cohost has a Scarlett 2i2 & the Irig2 & j iPhone 11 Pro Max & I’m wanting him to be able to call me with is audio coming through his Scarlett & I record it all from my house on my RODECaster
Where can i buy light adaper ?
If i buy that light adaprer and a standard jack 3,5 and i Connect the jack from adaper to an output of audio board or other Aux out , still ti works ?
I added the adapter to my Kit kit.com/rayortega/mix-minus-to-smartphone but if you are looking to make this work without the iRig2 the issue you run into is the line level coming out of the mixer which is too hot for the input (mic level) of the phone and will distort the audio.
I try to my note 9, it seems it's not working in my FB live , can you help me.?
whats the difference between plugging the iRig to the Monitors Out on the mixer as opposed to plugging to the Aux Send? I am using the iRig Pro I/O but that should not matter. I am not taking and receiving calls, I am just streaming music out to the iPhone.
Hi Ray, I can no longer find the iRig 2. Do you think the Rode SC6-L would work?
Hi Ray, How would you apply this process using a Zoom H5 recorder, an iPhone 8 plus, and the gear you suggest? Would the chain go: iphone to iRig2 - Irig2 to H5 via (mini to remote in on H5 or mini to xlr mono splitter on H5?). How do you monitor the call (via headphones?) and how does the caller hear your voice - is the phone's mic disconneted in this chain? I want to be able to record interviews. Thanks in advance. -- Follow-up. To keep it simple, I now use a fee service at Recordator.com. They record the call and send me an mp3 file almost immediatly - and a transcipt upon request. I know it's nice to see the levels and the red light, but this method sure makes it easy.
For recording Skype via an H5, you have to go with a setup like this ruclips.net/video/LoswJ5Vawas/видео.html This iRIG setup won't really work because the H5 does not have an aux send to send only your audio and not the person's audio back to themselves. Your mix and their audio both come into the H5 but you can't send both back or else you'd get that feedback loop. Also see the link below that video to go back to my site and read more about that setup for podcasting.
Thank you Ray for the videos you produce. I still have a lot to learn about audio. Question, in place plugging the iRig2 into the Apple dongle could you plug the iRIG2 into the new Rode SC6-L?
Thanks. I haven't tried that setup but it seems like it should work. Are you trying to also plug in something else with it at the same time, is that why the SC6?
Mike, you may want to check out this article on the SC6-L www.provideocoalition.com/9-reasons-why-the-rode-sc6-l-is-radically-different-from-the-sc6/
I think the SC6-L is mainly about inputting TRRS mic sources into iOS devices whereas the iRig 2 is about line-level analog sources into the iOS device. The SC6-L has a DAC (AD/DA converter) whereas the iRig 2 has no DAC.
Ray Ortega does it work on irig 1
Whats the difference from the Irig 1 and Irig 2
Hi Ray. I'd like to have a skype conversation using my condenser microphone. I've connected my scarlett 2i2 to my iphone using the lightning to camera usb adapter and my microphone to audio interface. However I notice when I do my skype call, I can't hear the other person on the other line. Will using iRig 2 solve this problem and allow 2 way audio between just the iphone and the focusrite (which I connect my monitoring headphones to)? And if so, will I be able to record this conversation?
Does this improve the quality on Instagram live
How do I connect a GM 280 soundcard to my iPhone 6

Will all of this work the same for GarageBand?
Hello Ray, I work as a sales person and I make a lot of calls in from of my PC. I would like to use my microphone and my headset connected to my PC to make my call using my smartphone. With this iRig2 probably I will be able to to something like this but I will probably need a mixer table right?
What suggestion you have? I have a nice microphone and phone connected to my pc. I want to use the same headset and microphone to call. How can I do it?
I have the same mixer. Can i set irig up with my phone to do better quality audio in videos. I have been doing some online shows since i can't gig at bars right now. Just me my voice and acoustic guitar. I have a samsung galaxy s 9
Hi Ray, I’m thinking of picking one up for my nephew who’s just getting into guitar. He has an iPad Pro (that doesn’t have a headphone jack) do you know if the iOS effects will send it through to an amp if he’s using a lighter adapter?
Yes it should. I used the amp app with my bass via the connector
Any particular special cables I should use for my Mackie Pro12 mixer?
All listed in the description or here kit.com/rayortega/mix-minus-to-smartphone
I have an electronic drum set. I am looking to wear headphones so I can hear the drums and music when I record onto my iPhone. I also want to be able to talk and sing while I play. I need to keep the room silent but record it all onto my phone. If you can, please let me know how to do that. I really need some help. Thank you.
You'd likely need to run everything drums and microphone into a mixer then out to the iRig and into your phone.
@@RayOrtega thank you
Hello mate, I'm from the UK so purchasing prices will be different.
Can you tell me exactly what cables I need to go from my Samsung s20 to a traktor s2mk3.
I have the I RIG2 but need to know what cables I need
