“What a fool believes, no wise man has the power to reason away”. He’s just saying that a fool will always believe his delusions, no matter what wiser men say to convince him otherwise. The fool will chase his lost love into oblivion
I think it’s saying that no matter how wise you are, you will always be blinded by love. You will never see the truth of the relationship because your love blinds you. Even wise men will become fools when blinded by love.

So lovely seeing someone watching so enjoyable the music I love. “What a fool believes, he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away” and “ What seems to be is always better than nothing” means “ There’s no point trying to reason with a deluded fool. He sees what he wants to see and you’ll never convince him that he is wrong. But maybe he is happier with his delusion. For a lonely fool, a fantasy love maybe better than no love at all” love this song.
Agreed. I was looking for someone to explain this. I'd only remove the first comma: “What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.” Also, I imagine a scene where the former lovers are meeting somewhere publicly, and she has decided to leave, therefore he "rises to her apology," that is, he gets up as she makes her excuse to bail. This is what the song indicates where a reasonable observer sees that he is "watching her go," meaning that she is going away from him forever. It is a beautiful song about his love and hope and the self-delusion to sustain that in the face of what otherwise is the crushing reality of her lost love. He can't even realize that he never made her think twice. She clearly saw that it was over. Nothing he could say or do could convince her to reconsider. Once she made the decision, she made an excuse to leave, which he accepted as if it were true, as if she had an important engagement elsewhere, as if this was just a normal thing and he would see her again. It's so hard to acknowledge the truth in such a devastating circumstance.

Actually, they are singing; "No wise man has the power." This is one of history's all-time greatest broken heart songs. It talks of a man that meets and ex he is still in love with. Yet, she has moved on and no matter what he says she isn't interested in giving him another chance. But, her love for her is so great, he can't see the truth. Truly a classic worth putting in a time capsule and opening in the next million years.
Almost. They had a brief encounter that was special to him and meaningless to her. In her mind they were never together and to him she is the one that got away.
Ace Degenerate Strange. I saw an interview with MM where he explained that they were casual acquaintances and he felt that there was more. If you analyze the first verse “ He came from somewhere back in her long ago The sentimental fool don't see Trying hard to recreate What had yet to be created once in her life.” “Somewhere” implying she does not even place him initially and in his mind they had a thing but in her’s “it never really was.” I inferred them to be at a bar or table and her apologizing (blowing him off and getting up to leave) as he rises politely to not realizing “anybody else would surely know he’s watching her go.”
Meisy G. Ever so often my friends and I go karaoking me and my buddy will go up and vocalize on tin man and Ventura highway, listen to another classic of theirs that nobody really hears called Amber Cascades this too was written by the same man who wrote Tin Man and Ventura Highway from America, Dewey Bunnell
I can't say this enough I am so absolutely thrilled that the younger generation especially the black community has gotten into the Vault of the 70s music... so much talent so much gifting it'll never be created again but I'm glad you all are resurrecting it
The chorus lyrics are: "But what a fool believes he sees./No wise man has the power/To reason away/What seems to be/Is always better than nothing/Than nothing at all."
Bradley McFadin you might as well hear the original with Harold Melville and the blue Notes with Teddy Pendgrass singing. THAT Simply Red, can not hold a tune too and the emotion Teddy puts in it. That’s why ladies threw their things on stage to him!
I always understood it to be without the comma, but it's even more interesting, and true, with it. Our beliefs color the "reality" we (think) we see. Thanks!
Thanks for the mention. "On My Own". Michael did a TON of background vocals too. Christopher Cross "Ride Like The Wind". You'll probably recognize it. Have an great evening.
I'm 51 and it took me decades to realize what was truly said and each time I listen I get more. There's never been a moment that I've heard the song and didn't enjoy it. You hear a combination of blues, rock, and pop melded into a masterpiece of manual instruments, electrical instruments, and vocals. To me, I feel a bittersweetness that encapsulates folly of life when love overrides reason in the face of love breaking up. Others see the folly, yet the man is caught in the web of delusion that the love is still going to come back to him.
Im smiling and grinning- it gives me joy when someone younger than me appreciates music that I grew up on . I totally remember my parents letting us play by the shores of a lake while they sat on the hood of the car “smoking “ ya know ... Doobie brothers blasting on the car radio , and us enjoying our happy meals ... simple - good times ...
Soul and funk are my favorite musical genres and there's so much soul in this song. Like you've said, music transcends race, creed, culture and background. It's all love.
I'm in the UK and white, i just love your reaction to these white guys with soul, there's loads of us out here, thanks for spreading the sounds of some of my favourite bands, not forgetting Bob, Stevie, Marvin, Sam , Aretha, Whitney , too many to list here .
This is absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time. The chord progressions, the groove - THE SONG! As a kid, I had no idea what the song was about, but if it came on at a skating rink, we were GROOVING!!! HOW in the WORLD did I miss the actual song penned on top of the music? "As he rises to her apology, anybody else would surely know...he's watching her go. But what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." - WOOOW!!! Such an incredibly powerful and sad song written over a dance groove threw me for a loop as an adult when I finally listened to the lyrics! McDonald's and Loggins KILLED the writing on this record! The music breathes and pulses without any of the instrumentation fighting for sonic space - I mean...I could write a novel about the greatness of this song! As a fellow musician and songwriter, everything about the song is pure ear candy!
Really? I don't take it that way at all. I don't even think it's all that sad if you Think about it in a Wise Man Way. He doesn't think she'll ever Leave, kind of like, She's Still on this Earth, she didn't Die, she's Not somewhere, where she's Never able to go back. His Door is Always Open for when she Does come back, and is Prepared to Make a Live as a Couple or Family. It doesn't Necessarily mean that she Doesn't Love him, she's just Not ready for Commitment just Yet.
My mom played this while she was cleaning the house (always seemed to be on the light FM station she found). Always makes me think about being a little kid and hearing this on sick days or holidays. Thanks!
He came from somewhere back in her long ago The sentimental fool don't see Tryin' hard to recreate What had yet to be created once in her life She musters a smile for his nostalgic tale Never coming near what he wanted to say Only to realize it never really was [Pre-Chorus] She had a place in his life He never made her think twice As he rises to her apology Anybody else would surely know He's watching her go [Chorus] But what a fool believes, he sees No wise man has the power to reason away What seems to be Is always better than nothing Than nothing at all [Verse 2] Keeps sending him somewhere back in her long ago Where he can still believe there's a place in her life Someday, somewhere She will return
Emotionally packed Feel-good Music; Sent directly from the past, with Love, to all the next Gens. Thanks soooo much for appreciating Classic Rock 'n Roll as we did. 💖🤗😍 Rock On! Classic GOLD . . . is timeless.

I was 13 when this album debuted. This song is my favorite Doobie song of all time. I fell in love with Michael then and still love him now. See if you can get a vinyl copy. It has all the lyrics for all the songs on the liner.
Very sad lyric. “She had a place in his life. He never made her think twice.....what seems to be is always better than nothing, and nothing at all keeps sending him somewhere back in her long ago where he can still believe there’s a place in her life. Someday somehow...”
You mixing up that pre chorus She had a place in his life, He never made her think twice, As he rises to her apology, anybody else would surely know, he’s watching her go.
terry fonz Thanks. I was simply highlighting what I’ve always considered the saddest parts of it. The whole piece is a study on cognitive dissonance: spiffy, catchy track set against a pathetic scene. Brilliant.
@@BamaScorpio69 I know what you are saying but I think the guy in the song isn't meant to be perceived as the stalker type. It's not about an obsessive guy it's just highlighting that there are those times in people's lives when someone meant so much to you but in reality you were not such a big deal to them. The lyrics do a great job showing that dynamic and I think a lot of us have been on both sides of the dynamic at least once.
The tremendous hooks and irresistible vibe of this song are akin to the sheer euphoria felt by a fat kid turned loose in a candy store...pure joy and sweetness. Feel the goodness.

“ He came from somewhere back in her long ago The sentimental fool don't see
Trying hard to recreate What had yet to be created once in her life.” “Somewhere” implying she does not even place him initially and in his mind they had a thing but in her’s “it never really was.” I inferred them to be at a bar or table and her apologizing (blowing him off and getting up to leave) as he rises politely to not realizing “anybody else would surely know he’s watching her go.”
Ace Degenerate very close but she’s the one rising to the apology!
M Dollar As “he” rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
DA Hannah where are you getting that from? Use your common sense. How could he rise to her apology?
Must react, please... America, "Tin Man", "Horse with No Name" and "Ventura Highway". Timeless and Classic 😘🤗
Meisy G. Love Tin Man, When I was in a band I sang this one always, great harmonies 👍🏼
@@hardlines4 Timeless and Classic 👏🎶
@@hardlines4 Nice, must be fun.😉
"You can do magic" is a great one too
I can't say this enough I am so absolutely thrilled that the younger generation especially the black community has gotten into the Vault of the 70s music... so much talent so much gifting it'll never be created again but I'm glad you all are resurrecting it
Soul has no color..... I love that!
The chorus lyrics are: "But what a fool believes he sees./No wise man has the power/To reason away/What seems to be/Is always better than nothing/Than nothing at all."
Simply Red. Holding Back the Years or If You Don’t Know me by Now
F*CK
YEAH!!!
Bradley McFadin you might as well hear the original with Harold Melville and the blue Notes with Teddy Pendgrass singing. THAT Simply Red, can not hold a tune too and the emotion Teddy puts in it. That’s why ladies threw their things on stage to him!
Stars as well
@@johnraymondflores But "Holding Back the Years" is unreal.
@@vladimirk9584 "Stars" is a great tune, as well. That whole album is solid. Biggest-selling album of 1991 in the UK, in fact.
This was one of my Dads favorite songs.
I was four when it came out. RIP in Peace Dad.
❤😢
"What A Fool Believes, He Sees" how true is that :)
The guy on the bottom left of the album cover is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who was also in Steely Dan. This another band you need to know about.
Michael McDonald was also with Steely Dan.
Skunk Baxter is also some kind of munitions expert.
And Michael McDonald performed the background vocals on, Peg, by Steely Dan.
@@christinel5486 it's so interesting how many of these acts were intertwined
He has done many Steely Dan reactions. Look 'em up!
Me too
Love your reactions to these old songs. I was 21 in 1979 and I remember it well. 😊 you missed a great era.
Michael McDonald with the Doobies...never better. This is probably one of their best songs ever.
I’ve been a musician for over fifty years and so much of these tunes you react to I’ve played hundreds of times. Love you, brother.
"Taking It to the Streets" has got to be next.
Great bass line in that one.
Hell yeah!
Great choice!!!
That song is badass!!!! Please review it Jamel!!
Listen to the music!
You might enjoy "I Can't Go For That" by Hall & Oates as well.
Not enjoy. Love.
Noooo-oo - Nawwww - NO CAN DO!
Oh no....Sara Smile is the one
"Shes Gone" absolute masterpiece.
Oh yeah, he would love hall & oats.
I always enjoy the "I heard this at work" face
This song is painful when you listen and realize you're the fool he's singing about. We've all been there, right?
Been there
Yes we have 🙏🏻💕
Facts though. I think I'm the fool as w speak :(
FACTS!!! Tear Jerking when it hits home like that! Yes, we’ve all been there 😅
My son is 46 you are about his age he always loved listening to the music of my days growing up . I’m glad he has the love for music ❤
My mom played this while she was cleaning the house (always seemed to be on the light FM station she found). Always makes me think about being a little kid and hearing this on sick days or holidays. Thanks!
I saw Michael in concert the summer of 2019. He’s still amazing
I’m envious.
Wowwww!!! Your blessed to have gotten that opportunity, Man.
Golden voice, never ages.
"If love can come, and love can go, then why can't love return once more..." ~ great lyrics!!
I feel the same way. This song makes me close my eyes and dance and cry all at the same time. The groove is just so f'ing deep and pure.
😆“To pay respect - I should be knowing the damn song instead of humming it”👊
There's also "You Belong to Me", which McDonald co-wrote with Carly Simon. Both The Doobies and Carly recorded versions of it.
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool don't see
Tryin' hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life
She musters a smile for his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize it never really was
[Pre-Chorus]
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
[Chorus]
But what a fool believes, he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
Than nothing at all
[Verse 2]
Keeps sending him somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
Someday, somewhere
She will return
thanks!
Yes! Thank you!
Your Reactions are sooooo needed. Don't you ever stop! Thank you a trillion times.
Check out “It Keeps You Runnin” another Doobies classic jam with Michael McDonald on lead vocals. A cold jam for sure!
Travis Finnerty, It keeps you Runnin' is chilling with McDonald's vocals. Chills /tears here
YES, I was going to see if he covered that one
I LOVE that song!
I don’t think he’s done it yet, he left off on Takin It To The Streets
I'd never heard it until Forrest Gump. Loved it ever since
I love the fact that u love all kinds of music and love ur little dance moves!
He’s saying ‘what a fool believes, he sees. The wise man has the power to reason away’
"No wise man has the power..."
@@eggnogfrog The power is the ability,to reason, Do not believe everything you see,and only half of what you hear.
@@eggnogfrog I always thought it was "the wise man...' , but "no wise man..." Makes more sense to the rest of the song. Thanx for sharing.
Robert Ferguson Right on 👍
@t beaton What a fool believes he sees. No wise man has the power to reason away.
Flat earth believers are a prime example of this fact.
You cannot listen to this song and not be moved, physically AND musically! Love it!
Emotionally packed Feel-good Music; Sent directly from the past, with Love, to all the next Gens. Thanks soooo much for appreciating Classic Rock 'n Roll as we did. 💖🤗😍 Rock On!
Classic GOLD . . . is timeless.
I had a coworker that was addicted to these guys,he got tickets for their farewell tour and it was all he talked about. I can understand why, they were great.
Enlightenment is a beautiful thing. I get the same experience from Earth, Wind and Fire. Thank you, brother.
I love it when you try to hit those high notes. 🤣 Believe me we ALL try to remember the words Michael sings LOL!!! 🎶 Love this forever. 💝
I was 13 when this album debuted. This song is my favorite Doobie song of all time. I fell in love with Michael then and still love him now. See if you can get a vinyl copy. It has all the lyrics for all the songs on the liner.
Feelin it too bruh- "No wise man has the power to reason away"
I've been in love with this song since it first came out, and it's on my playlist. Also saw them in concert way back when. Great band.
Sharing songs from our youth and seeing such reactions is like blowing kisses from the hand. Just enjoy and be happy, mankind.... Dave.
Very sad lyric. “She had a place in his life. He never made her think twice.....what seems to be is always better than nothing, and nothing at all keeps sending him somewhere back in her long ago where he can still believe there’s a place in her life. Someday somehow...”
You mixing up that pre chorus
She had a place in his life,
He never made her think twice,
As he rises to her apology,
anybody else would surely know, he’s watching her go.
terry fonz Thanks. I was simply highlighting what I’ve always considered the saddest parts of it. The whole piece is a study on cognitive dissonance: spiffy, catchy track set against a pathetic scene. Brilliant.
Oh this is definitely a sad song if you're the guy. If you're the girl you're like, "Dude was a stalker!!!" Lol
I love these lyrics!
These songs takes me back to my childhood in the 70s when both of my parents were still around.
The tremendous hooks and irresistible vibe of this song are akin to the sheer euphoria felt by a fat kid turned loose in a candy store...pure joy and sweetness. Feel the goodness.
Nice analogy haha
"If love can come and love can go why can't love return once more?"
"It's so catchy" Damn straight. This song's more catchy than the coronavirus! LOL (We can all come back and look at these comments, years from now, and reminisce: "We were there! We lived it!")
My Brother Rob....you are killin 'me...BWAAAHHH!! Testify, my brother.....keep the faith!
@jaime herrera Is this the actual Jaime Herrera, the politician?
No coronavirus jokes please
Robert Zeurunkl well said!
LOL, too soon
God bless you for wanting to keep this music on everyone's radar!
When this came out in '79, i was so into Hard Rock (Rush, Zeppelin, Sabbath...Etc.) But the Doobies always had a special place in my listening vocabulary. Love it!!
Same here. I was always into hard rock and heavy metal, but Doobie Brothers and Fleetwood Mac were my softer bands I liked.
