I’m 67 and a huge fan of The Doobie Brothers and even though this is my favorite song of theirs if I had number 2 through number 10 favorite of theirs they were all early Doobie Brothers prior to Michael McDonald. Go down that early Doobie Brothers rabbit hole. China Grove, Listen To The Music, Clear As A Driven Snow etc etc etc. It’s all great. The Hell’s Angels of all things loved this band. A California thing I reckon.

exactly.: he is choosing to "play the fool" and reason away any logic that tells him to accept the truth (that there was never anything between them), lest he experience the emotional devastation of realizing he'd been believing in a fantasy his whole life. Better to go on pretending because what seems to be (his fantasy) is better than noting at all.
