The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. They had so many great songs such as "Listen To The Music", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Black Water", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "It Keeps You Runnin'", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.
Tons of great songs by the Doobie Brothers.
Michael McDonald wrote hundreds of songs for different artists. Lot of Motown. His voice is one of the most recognizable in musical history. 😊
They were my 1st concert back in 1979 when I was 14 yrs old!!❤️
That's a memory!
LUCKY!❤
They were my first concert as well. It was the "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" tour. They had the purple smoke on stage like the album cover. They smashed ALL their instruments after the last song and had a pie fight with the band members on stage at the end. One guy from the audience got on stage with them, they through a pie in this face and pushed him back off stage. It was epic!
Best Year
There are two different sides of the Doobie Brothers, before Michael and after he came on board after their 5th album. Tom Johnson guitarist was their main vocalist until he had heath issues. I personally prefer the Tom era of music.
Iconic song. "No wise man has the power, to reason away what a fool believes." Facts.
"Long Train Running" is a must on a Doobie Brothers journey, it's such a fun/funky tune!!🙃The official music video, which is a compilation of live performances and backstage shenanigans is super fun and will give u a better idea of who the Doobs were! Oh and btw, the type of "doobie" you said you know is EXACTLY what the Doobie Brothers are named after!! They were always getting stoned!!😜
Anyway, very early in their career they were hanging out and smoking weed while trying to come up with a name for the band (which none of them could agree on the same name😉). A friend was hanging with them during the argument/debate over a name and was getting frustrated with their argument. So he lit another joint and just simply said "why don't you just call yourself the "doobie" brothers?? That was the end of the argument over a name... they laughed and became ""The Doobie Brothers" forever!!!🤣😂🤣 Love your reactions guys!!❤
Great tune, but here's some context: Michael McDonald did not join the Doobie Brother until the band had been touring and recording for five years (1970-75), he did so because Tom Johnston, the the original lead singer, writer and guitarist, was forced to stop touring because of ill health, including stomach ulcers, but those first five years under Johnston produced some of the best hits of that era and a sound quite different than that when McDonald took over.
Suggest you hit the original band next, led by Johnston, and while there are many great tracks to chose from, my favorite is "Long Train Running." Make sure you pick the original studio release (3:27) and not a later, extended dance version that remove a lot of what made the original a treasure. Here's a link to the original: ruclips.net/video/CVsLEI-hCXw/видео.html
Many, many hits from The Doobies. I suggest "Listen to the Music", this was an early hit before Michael McDonald joined the band.
Speaking of great harmonies & absolutely beautiful MUST HEAR classics,, America "A Horse With No Name" & many many more.
It's interesting to see young people's reactions to music that some of us witnessed back when. Also, there's a bit of unwarranted shock when youth say they've never heard of acts that wrote sections of our formative pasts. In this song's case, bring a fool for someone is relatable to many, and the talent in conveying that is bare, unshielded and unaided by invasive modern technology.
I'm glad you enjoyed this classic, and look forward to more immersion in what's to come from them. (Minute By Minute wouldn't be a terrible next choice.🤷♂️)
Have a great day!
Yes minute by minute or Takin it to the streets
Thanks! Great comment!
The Doobie Brothers were a great band without Michael McDonald. They were a very different band, but still great with him. What a Fool Believes IMO is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. I believe it won the Grammy for Song of the Year.
Another great Michael McDonald-led Doobie Bros song that's still smooth but a bit more rocking is "Takin' It To The Street." It would make for a really good reaction video.
Early Doobies was great. Michael McDonald era is fantabulous
The Doobie Brothers are golden with every song they did
Takin it to the Streets ( not live).... China Grove.. and Black Water
To me this is one of their weakest efforts. Good but not great like almost every other song of theirs. China Grove, Listen to the Music, Black Water, Takin' it to the Streets, all fantastic. I'd start w Black Water.
Have y'all reacted to the studio version? This one's fine, but studio beats it. As it usually does.
Listen to the music of their best song IMO
A friend of the band and fellow musician is the one who suggested the name The Doobie Brothers, as the word “doobie” is a nickname for a marijuana joint that the bandmates often indulged in. They thought the name would be temporary.
I prefer the studio cut but even live this song is magic 👍
Studio version is the best one. But not bad for a live version. Not bad at all.
I think y'all would like
Takin it to the streets
Should have went with the studio version
Pat Johnson was always my favorite Doobie brother even after Michael Macdonald joined the band. They have so many good songs. China Grove, taking it to the streets, Jesus is just alright and, of course, Black Water. There is some great harmonies in Black water.
Yeah, doobie meant the same thing back then.
They did song called China Grove, which is a town 10 minutes away from where I was raised and in song was talking about a teacher that was my economic teacher
This is my favourite song from The Doobie Brothers as Michael McDowell was the lead singer & just sensational in my eyes!! His voice is incredible as are the band too. They were all superb!!
Michael McDonald
@@DanielFrost21 Oops sorry! 🙄
My silly mistake!! Michael McDonald 🙄
I enjoy your reactions. "I Keep Forgetting" is an old favorite of mine, since it describes a marriage that I was in at the time.
They sound great, but all reactions should be the studio version...
Omygosh The Doobie Brothers are legendary. One of my favorite groups of all time. NEXT ONE: LONG TRAIN RUNNING… ❤😊
Great reaction Sam and Phil! The Doobies had a long list of hits when popular. Black Water was one in particular that I liked.
Great Reaction BARS & BARBELLS! Now that you know what Michael McDonald sounds like don’t be surprised if you hear him in other Rock/Pop songs he did backup vocals for a lot artists!🎶🎸🙏🏻
As I understand it, what you were thinking is exactly what the name means. They had a string of hits without Michael McDonald as well. Great group live. I've seen them half a dozen or so times. Always amazing.
They got their name playing in a Hell's Angel's bar, and smoking pot. Hence, The Doobie Brothers.
It's the 70s... They're musicians... What do you think Doobie means? 😂
Original group lead was Tom Johnson I believe he recently passed away.
Tom isn’t dead
ICONIC song❤ Pls react to Ace "How long", also has beautiful harmonies, you will guaranteed love it✌️
Thank you for another great video reaction!🌷🌷🌷🌷
Michael McDonald is great. But I personally prefer the Tom Johnston era of the Doobies.
Please do pre-Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers. These are some of their very best hits in no particular order: 'Long Train Runnin", 'Black Water', 'Listen to the Music' (my all time DB favorite), 'China Grove', 'Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me)'. and you can't go wrong with "Jesus Is Just Alright".
Michael McDonald is great, but he is not original Doobie Brothers’s. The Doobie’s were a different, and some would say, a better band pre Michael McDonald.
Yeah, so The Doobie Brothers are one of the most pleasing bands to listen to. Combination of funk, soul and disco, with exceptional songwriting and harmonies. Your Bee Gees reference is very apt. :)
Michael does my favorite cover of "Heard it Through the Grapevine." His voice and Motown - ear candy! ruclips.net/video/J7sBoJye_yg/видео.html
Hey Bars & Barbells, Love your reactions but am surprised no one has asked you to react to any of Steely Dans' amazing and much-praised songs, such as Aja. Also, have a play of Al Stewart's wonderful Year of The Cat. (And, one day, choose some of the band Genesis' popular songs. Would very much enjoy seeing that in your portfolio!
If you havent caught it already, McDonald and Patti Labelle "On My Own' is imo a top 20 video.
Jeff Skunk Baxter looking cool seated playing guitar laughing away, you look at this you wouldnt realize his high government position today
This song won the Grammy for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1980.. one of my favs ! x
Try an overlooked song by them "South City Midnight Lady" its a good one!!
In that era doobie, was a joint (a marijuana cigarette), at least while we were passing them back & forth
I know thia is a different artist, butbyou should listen to Trisha Yearwood sing There Goes My Baby.
Quite good live version, but I still prefer the studio version that became a #1 hit. They were the first concert I ever saw, it was for this tour. I was about 16 and my mom was a fan and took me. 😄
Awww dang. My senior year high school breakup song. The intense sting of teenage romance then heartbreak still hurts me every time I hear this song. Every single time. Class of 1980.
Doobies we’re much better before McDonald.
They where good there whole career .need to check them out completely.there best music happened before Micheal McDonald
They where good there whole career .need to check them out completely.there best music happened before Micheal McDonald
Back when this song came out I was missing the story, but digging the sound. Finally found out the poor dude's situation. The AM car radio through an 8" speaker was a far cry from headphones. : )
Michael McDonald's concept for the lyric was a scenario where two people meet in a restaurant - two people who had a passionate relationship long ago. To the man, the affair was the best thing in his life; to the woman, it was fun, but it was time to move on. In the conversation, the man makes a complete fool of himself. When the woman excuses herself to leave, he doesn't get the message, believing he still has a shot and that their affair was much more meaningful than it actually was. Love makes a man a fool, and even a wise one can't reason it away. Peace out.
Never fails in the reaction videos. They always have to pause and run their mouth. Just once I would like to find someone that listens to the song and give us their thoughts when it is finished. Guess people cannot remember what they think for maybe four minutes.
UUUH..When the Samantha says something Skywalker or not..... don't be disputing it!!!!!...or else im gonna pull up on ya! lol
Doobie means exactly what you think it means.
Check out some original Doobie Brothers! Black Water is one of their best songs.
Tom Johnson was the original lead singer of the Doobie Brothers and they had several big hits in the early to mid 70's like Listen To The Music, Long Train Running, Black Water, China Grove etc, Michael Mcdonald joined around 76' when Johnson became ill. Although later Doobies were good the earlier Doobies with Johnson, in my opinion, were much better, much more funky.
Next react. Putri Ariani recieve GOLDEN BUZZER from Simon Cowell. AGT 2023 . Thanks...
Coming soon!
Are we gonna pretend like there isn't a guy jamming out in a recliner?
BEST backing vocals ever. I love a stron male backing vocal.
Micheal McDonald was not an original member of The Doobie Bros.(1972) He was asked to the Band around 19 77 I think. He also was a studio musician, and played keyboards and sang fon different Band's albums, such as Steely Dan. He later went solo and became a star.
Those Harmonies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of the best ever. This is a bouncy happy tune, but it tells a very sad story.
Yeah very much one of those deceiving songs where the story told is accompanied by an opposite sounding melody
No matter where he goes, Michael voice is instantly recognizable!!! LOVE HIS SOUND...❤
Micheal McDonald is a fantastic singer, but I prefer the original lineup. They were much more concerned with their arrangements and musicianship, whereas Micheal is much more the focus of their later works like this one.
deep dive into lyrics suggested
Looks like it's stink face good.
It amases me when americans here this for the first time.😂
What does it mean? Pass me that doobie brother.
how to you get this effen clueless?
Oh yeah, they were stoners .🤘🏼😜
Michael McDonald the man. Great live! ❤️❤️❤️
You guys need to try some Steely Dan. In some ways a similar sound to the Dobbie Brothers. Here's one of their hits Reelin in the Years: ruclips.net/video/GaH25Sghoqc/видео.html For some extra fun do some research to find out how they got their band name. Kind of funny.
Mate, FUN FACT: In 1973 Michael McDonald joined Steely Dan’s touring band, and sang both lead and back up vocals…including on their song, Reelin’ in the Years…The funny way they sound similar is that Michael is singing for both bands…Good Luck Jjh
Can't go wrong with the Doobie Brothers
The doobie Brothers are on tour right now go see them if they come to your area i will be seeing them again in october when they come to my state
I like their sound with the original lead singer Tom Johnson
They were always a great band, but they became more commercial with McDonald.
I don't know about that. China Grove, Black Water, Long Train Runnin', Listen to the Music. They were all pretty successful commercially.
memories
You will love the Early Doobie Brothers…South City Midnight Lady, Black Water, Living on the Fault Line,
Everything you need to know can be found in the documentary "The Doobie Brothers: Let The Music Play". Enjoy!!!
"Doobie doobie do" (Frank Sinatra line from an old song) Doobie was a common skatting phrase in big band music. leading to "Doo Wop" from the Philadelphia area in the 1950s.
Great Reaction as Always. Lucky enough to have seen them in Concert a few times back in the day. Blackwater by them is a Must 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
PS. You want to check out an Amazing Voice & Guitarist, React to “Lie To Me” by Johnny Lang. Dude was 16 when the Song & Official Video were released. You will not believe the Voice that comes out of that Baby Faced Teenager and that Guitar. Johnny’s Talent is Undeniable. Enjoy
🇨🇦 Dagmars is right ! One of my absolute favourite bands for decades ! Make a note of that list of songs, and know that you will NOT be able to find a bad one ! My preference, start with official video version of "Long Train Running" !
Despite zero engineering training, a college degree, or even a remote interest in ballistics, Skunk Baxter is a current year high level military consultant, with expertise in new use of old tech. A guy who got his nickname for smelling like weed, is among the most respected analyst who came up with many usages of drones, missiles, and other top secret technology.
They still blow me away. And this is live. The vocals back then in general were so real, no gimmicks/autotune. So glad performances like this were preserved.
I am fairly certain that Michael McDonald could sing "Ring Around the Rosie" and it would be a hit. He has such a smooth, easy to listen to voice. Joining an already great band in the Doobie Brothers was near genius.
This tune won Grammy's for the record of the year and song of the year in 1980.
Bongos are the small "hand drums" that you hold between your knees. The larger ones (like in this video) that are held in stands are called "congas".
There's a genius in the musicality of this song- the keyboards and percussion playing off one another and yet integrating together. Always loved this song; always makes you feel something.
I was living in San Jose, Ca which is where the Doobie Brothers are from also. This track got a ton of air time on all the local readio stations. I was going to college and one of the Doobies was in one of my classes. It was a great time for sure.
Doobie Brothers are legendary I know I use the word legendary a lot but their legendary
The who. won’t be fooled again, live brilliant 🇬🇧👍
It means what you think. Also this is one of the most outstanding songs of my teenage life. I had it on a 45. Gorgeous. Unrequited love
One of the saddest songs ever written. It still moves me after all these many years.
Pure blue eyed soul in MM’s voice! ♥️🎶
the storys in their songs are unmatched
The Doobie Brothers "takin it to the streets".
