I've been to hundreds of concerts during my 60 years on planet Earth. When it came to stadium wide happy vibes nobody could touch The Doobies and The Beach Boys. Their live shows were pure joy.

He moved on to the great Steely Dan.Their first three albums were gold,and their 3rd one in my opinion is the best album of all time called “ The Captain and Me.” Every song of the 11 are or could have been hits with great order.

I grew up six miles from Alpine Valley I too saw them there along with pretty much every rock band you can think of. I always say I had the best teenage years anyone can have every weekend in the summer was a rock fest. My best friend was at the Stevie Ray concert that night
"Listen To The Music" is from their album, "Toulouse Street" which is one of their best albums imo. The 2nd single off the album "Jesus Is Just Alright" was also a big hit. There's also has a fast groovin' rocker from the album that I know you guys would like, "Rockin' Down The Highway"

It was also written and sung by Johnston, a real rocker that has been super popular on radio for more than five decades! Their most interesting and creative song, vocally, is Black Water, a must listen.
I went to school with the base player, Tyrone Porter. He was a cool guy that just hung out with everyone, I would see him from time to time because I knew his sister Jill. I listened to the Doobie Brothers, but it was just music. I found out he was in the band when our school put his picture in the yearbook and I was shocked! Even though I saw him pretty much on a daily basis before the yearbook, I never saw him again.
I saw The original Marshall Tucker and the Doobie Brothers at the Hartford Civic Center in Connecticut (does not exist anymore) I belive it was late 1970s maybe 76.. Great concert.
Still sounds as good today as it did 50 years ago. I prefer the early Doobie's over the later. This always got played at parties as another one that people would sing the chorus. Just good music. Need to check out I Cheat The Hangman.

When I think of the Doobie Brothers, there are two versions…. In the early 70’s when there was Tom Johnston as the lead singer with a stronger rock & roll vibe with songs like Listen to the Music & China Grove. Later in the 70’s Micheal McDonald became the lead singer. He had a more soulful voice like in the song What a Fool Believes.
I'd say the most notable player in this early incarnation of the Doobie Brothers is Skunk Baxter - the 2nd from the left guitarist - whom you may spot in videos playing for Steely Dan, Linda Ronstadt, and even James Brown. In the later incarnation of the band, the more jazzy version, you have front man Michael McDonald, who was showing up all over the place for a few years.
The lead singer is Tom Johnson. He was the original singer for a number of years. Unfortunately he ended up with throat issues & was replaced by Michael McDonald. In my opinion Tom was the best of the two.
"What A Fool Believes" was a later Doobies hit, with lead vocal by a star in his own right, Michael McDonald. McDonald was also a member of Steely Dan, but since had scored many self penned hits. The lead singer in this number, "Listen To The Music", is original Doobie, Tom Johnston.

The original Doobies consisted of two lead guitarists and vocalists (Tommy Johnston and Pat Simmons) along with a bass player and two drummers. First saw them in 1973? when they opened for Three Dog Night. Nobody had ever heard of them until Listen To The Music hit the radio a couple of weeks later and they started their string of hits. Years later Johnston had serious medical issues and had to leave the band. Michael McDonald replaced him and the Doobies moved to a more mellow, less rock, sound. Eventually Johnston recovered from his medical issues and rejoined the band, which moved back to a more rock sound.. More than 50 years later Simmons and Johnston are still touring with the latest version of the band.
But the Doobies have never returned to their pre-McDonald era greatness. Tom Johnston was back but the last four albums before he left were true classics and they have never been able to sort themselves out properly since then. So sad. It's like they have been in a musical twilight zone. They even brought back their original producer but the magic was gone. They can't even muster a great live version of "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman." Tom puts too many ad-lib vocals in and they don't concentrate on the great blues guitar of the original album cut. They are just not focused enough on what made them great in the first place. Sigh ... 🤷♂
The Doobies were local, so it was cool to see them get big. This clip is from a documentary about Chateau Liberte a notorious venue in the 70s and the Doobies played there frequently. For anyone not real familiar with Silicon Valley/San Jose, Santa Cruz is about 27 miles away , driving through the coastal mountain range. Roughly 1/2 way, on the old San Jose - Soquel Road, is where the Chateau is/was located.
