Music “Should Be” Color Blind! A child of the 70’s, I can honestly say, I never thought of color.
A good start with Doobie’s:
China Grove
Long Train Running
Black Water
Jesus is Just Alright
Taking it to The Streets (McDonald on lead vocals)
Definitely Black Water followed by China Grover
Nice recommendations
Great List Suggestions for Doobie Brothers (my college days ... ahhhhhhhhhh .... )
:D When scientists finished mapping the Human Genome they found that all human beings share 99.9% of their DNA. That being said, IMHO, the only important differences that exist between one human being and another are the quality of the thoughts that exist between their ears and the spirit of kindness that fills their heart of hearts. :) Nothing else matters.
ALL BANGERS!!! :)
Love the Blue-eyed soul of Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers!! 51 yes old and jam this with my 70 yr old parents still!!!
His eyes ❤
I grew up with the Doobies, too.... blessed to be raised in the 1970s!
My favorite was Taking it to the Streets! I wore out my cassette tape and when CDs came out played the heck out of it! Doobie Brothers and Journey Eagles what great music we had!
@@sandralybrand9425 YES have you seen the live version....it's so so good, so true today, too.
Same! 56
Michael McDonald was 27 years old here. He's 72 now and still performing this song 45 years later!
Still got a great voice. His recent RUclips Interview with Rick Beato is fantastic 😊
this song like michael defies time
Love him !!!!!!!
You might have heard: Listen To The Music, China Grove, Long Train Running, Taking It To The Streets, Blackwater. And other great hits. The Doobie Brothers are still playing 50 years later.
I’ve seen the Doobie Brothers live recently and they still sound just as great as ever!
All wonderful songs. Black water really is magical to hear at night!
Long train Running is my absolute favorite 🥰
I always imagine a skit of McDonald pitching this song to the band like it was his coming out as a singer/songwriter starting with the beep beep boop beep boop beep beep boo beep then busting out that growling whisper of a voice and them completely dogging him, then fast forwarding to them 8 deep on stage or however many just barely playing their instruments looking at each other in disbelief as McDonald does his thing with crowds eating it up. The band still in shock as McDonald takes over but provides somehow with the contrast of what the band sounded like before with the songs you mentioned above has to be one of the most extreme transitions ever. McDonald is undeniable but arguably the antithesis of the sound of the doobies previously. I refuse to look up the real story keeping my fantasy of how it went down intact.
I believe Tom Johnston was singing lead vocals on every one of those songs you mentioned. He left and Michael McDonald took over the lead vocals
In his mind they had something going on when in fact he never made her think twice. She wasn't playing him, she was unaware of him.
Exactly!
“What a Fool Believes” is about the guy’s unrequited love for a woman who never saw him as anything but someone she knew from long ago. She was his dream girl, he was just a past acquaintance to her.
The guitarist sitting down is none other than Jeff "Skunk" Baxter who really is a rocket scientist and chaired the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense in 1995. He has consulting contracts with the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. He consults for the US Department of Defense and the US intelligence community, as well as defense-oriented manufacturers such as Science Applications International Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corp., General Dynamics, and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.
Smart guy
And early guitarist for Steely Dan.
@@payleighsteele1540 and Spirit. Oddly enough he's also sitting while playing in the Spirit video I Got A Line On You. He's been a session guitarist for just about every artist you can think of, plus touring with Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, and Billy Vera and the Beaters. He's even played keyboards for several artists. LOL, he even scored a movie, The Curse of Inferno.
And he can roll a joint like no other 😂
This song is reminiscent of like a 20 yr high school reunion where a guy meets a former classmate that he had huge crush on. His memories are fantasies of the place she had in his life, when in reality she hardly knew him and barely even remembers him.
If you like Michael McDonald's voice do listen to his duet with PattiLaBelle "On My Own", it cannot be described with words. Also with James Ingram "Yamo Be There". The song is about a guy who mistook a fling for something real and he keeps hoping she will return although they never really had anything, hence the words"trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created" she just gets up and walks away because their "love story" was only ever in his daydreams.
There are 2 periods of Doobie Brothers, they started with Tom Johnston on lead vocals but he had health problems so Michael McDonald took over. Guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter knew Michael from Steely Dan before he joined the Doobie Brothers.
Michael McDonald’s voice is so distinct that I think Johnston doesn’t get enough recognition, but the older songs are some of their best!
I always felt like this song was about a guy who had a mad crush years ago, but it was one sided. They meet again and "She had a place in HIS life. He never made HER think twice."
That's what I thought, too. She apologized for not thinking of him the same way he thought of her. He's a fool who believed in something that only existed in his head.
Thank you for saying that!! There is no race in music! It transcends all earthly boundaries.
Perfect reply! Have a great weekend 😊
And it didn't matter their sexual preference. Music can touch the soul
You need to check out China Road from the Doobie (yes, the bud) bruthas
This is another voice that can NOT be duplicated! Michael McDonald is phenomenal!!!❤❤❤❤❤
The Doobie Brothers were from San Jose, Ca in 1970. Yes DB, the name is taken from the fact that they did enjoy their 'Doobies'. The name started out as a joke but hell it was the 70s.
Tom Johnson was the original lead on most songs but something happened to him. I think he had health issues for awhile. So they got Michael McDonald until Tom eventually came back.
This band has SO many hits through the 70s and 80s. Back in the day you could drop the needle anywhere on their albums and you'd be happy.
I suggest Black Water. It'll give you a totally different reaction. Seriously and Chelsea thinks so too. Lol
Tom Johnston
Long Train Running, Taking It to the Streets, Minute By Minute, Black Water, You Belong to Me, and so many more.
The Doobie Brothers are massively talented!❤
I love Blackwater! Even at age 76 I'll get up and dance to that! ❤️
@@sandralybrand9425 Dance to your hearts content! I'm the reverse of your age (67).
The Doobie Brothers are awesome! We had an abundance of great bands back in the 70s! Listen to the Music, Long Train Running, and China Grove and Black Water also big hits for the Doobies.
Won the Grammy Award in 1979 for best song of the year-it was on the air waves constantly-with good reason.-It's one of the best ever.
Some of the most soulful songs by this group are: it keeps you runnin, real love, thank you love and taking it to the streets. Please and thank you!
He has a magnificent voice. He sang with Steely Dan, then the doobie brothers and his solo career and the doobie brothers again. Great music great songs
The lead singer is Michael MacDonald from “I Keep Forgetting” (Regulate) 😊that you did the other week; did you know that!
You can't go wrong with the Doobie Brothers, they were it in the 70's, still are! HUGE!
Doobie Brothers..man those were the days 😊
I’m 61 and remember this being the album I got for my birthday one yr. I was around 12-13 . My first teen type party . We played the Doobie Brothers over and over 😊🦠💚🦠💚
Michael McDonald, who is singing on this track, convinced Barry Gordy to let him do an album called Motown, which was off the chain.
they had hits, but the beauty of the Doobies were that tey were just so incredibly consistent
Those mikes are the classis Sennheiser. They were often used for kick drums in the early days, but Michael McDonald started using them when he was singing with Steely Dan.
I think Pink Floyd used them in the Echoes performance in Pompeii as well
It's going to be hilarious when you realize how many awesome songs this group put out and how many of them you probably know but didn't know it was them
I've heard this called the happiest sad song ever.
Great reaction!
That smooth sound is sometimes called blue-eyed soul.
The song is about a guy that harbors fond memories of a romance from the past, but it's all in his head. She was nice to him, but he imagined it was more. He runs into her later in life, fondly reminiscing, but she doesn't recall it that way. She apologizes that she has to go, but he believes in the false idea he has anyway.
Awe, Man… I adore The Doobie Brothers.
“But what a fool believes, he sees.
No wise man has the power to reason away.”
Such great & true lyrics.
Michael McDonald had a successful solo career after he left THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, he sang the theme song for a GREGORY HINES and BILLY CRYSTAL movie in the 80's, "RUNNING SCARED" / SWEET FREEDOM
Tom Johnston was the lead vocals for the band from 1970 to 1975. Michael McDonald joined the band in 1975 as a keyboard player and second lead vocalist while Johnston was dealing with health problems. McDonald also played keyboards on some Steely Dan tracks. Besides having a Solo Career he sang backup for Christopher Cross “Ride like the wind,” Kenny Loggins’ “This is it.” & others. Great Duo's & although he didn’t sing on "I'll Wait", he was brought in to help finish the song.
This same taping included my favorite "It Keeps You Running" Great song and great showcase for this bands talent
This song is 45 years old and still sounds fresh.
The microphones are even older, which is why you don't recognize them.
Love you going outside your box and finding other great music. Music ( all genres) has so much to offer. Keep digging bro, none of us have heard it all. Just us old cats have heard a little more.
The Doobie Brothers was my first concert. It was July 12, 1979. The stage was covered in doobies from the fans throwing them onto the stage. One of the band members bent down, picked one up, and smoked it immediately. The whole arena was lighting up and smoking. Everywhere you looked, you could see the smoke through the lights. It was a great concert experience.
Exactly. Music is the universal language!!!!
Gah!!! I can't even begin to express how much I love that u are checking out everything I grew up listening to!! Again, I could give u a list a mile long, but some of their more popular songs are China Grove, Listen to the Music, Long Train Runnin', Black Water, Jesus is alright with me, & Takin' it to the streets! Michael Macdonald takes the lead on this song, but he has solo music as well! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, check out I Keep Forgettin! 🙏🙏🙏You will get a very nice surprise!! 😏
I definitely 2nd you checking out I Keep Forgettin!! 🙏🏼 It’s a great one w/ an even greater surprise!! ❤️🤩
@@BrookePS23I think he already did!
@@WitchelliB Yep… it was great! He checked it out after Chelsea left that comment! 🫶🏼
Love the Doobie Brothers, deep rabbit hole there to enjoy
Taking it to the Streets! ❤❤❤ gotta listen to that one.
Seen them last year, Black Water ,Jesus is just alright,China Grove, there are so many great songs. Love the Doobie Brothers ❤🎶🎶 That's Michael McDonald this was in the 70's BP.
One of my favorites is Minute by Minute. That bass line is amazing.
Not sure why, but this song is one of those that will always put you in a good mood, and for me, it's one of the best songs ever.
Long Train Running.....Listen to the Music........SO MANY GREAT SONGS BY THE DOOBIES........
Listen, I grow up dorm this time and my mother was a huge Doobies fan. This band is something special and Michael McDonald is everything.
The Doobie Brothers were featured in a 70's sitcom called "What's Happening." The three lead characters were attempting to record a bootleg of their concert and they got busted by the band.
I still listen to them. China Grove is a favorite, and Black Water. 'm 63, and share the 70's music with my grandkids in their early 20's. Great music is great in any generation. 😊
The chorus is reminiscent of Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Michael McDonald is one of my favorite artists ever. His voice is unmistakable and everybody wanted Michael on their track. So many duets and features. I've seen Michael live and it is such a fun show. We stood the entire time dancing...everyone...it's impossible to sit still. He was headlining and Chaka Khan was on after him. It was amazing! He's a legend.
No matter what DB's song you listen to, they are all hits! "China Grove" which is describing a small town in Texas that the band went through once while on tour is great song for the next reaction for sure. The Doobies are one of San Francisco's finest rock bands from back in the day..
Takin' It To The Streets is an awesome song from the Doobie Bros.
Michael McDonald....luv luv luv luv. gorgeous blue eyes amazing talent.
Written by Kenny Loggins, whose song, "I'm Alright" was the theme in the movie 'Caddy Shack". I only know the Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald because of my kids, but I liked Loggins and Messina (then just Loggins) when I was in college. "Footloose" is probably at least as recognized even by younger generations because their parents had the VHS tape when they were kids. Thank goodness for children. I'd have missed a lot of music if mine weren't blasting it on their boom boxes.
I think this song is more about the fact that the relationship was over a long time ago, but he never really let go. She means something to him, but he can't see (doesn't want to see) that he never meant much to her. He runs into her somewhere (at a party or something?) and she pretty much ghosts him, but he still thinks somehow it's still on and she'll come back into his life.
Written by both Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald.
Michael McDonald singing with Patti Labelle…. On My Own…… is such an amazing duet…
Love the Doobie Brothers ♥️ those of us who were fortunate to have our preteen & teen years in the 70s and young adulthood in the 80s with a booming economy DID have the best of all generations. We got to experience the growth of the music industry after the birth of Rock-n-Roll to what it was in the 60s, how it changed in the 70s living through Disco. And I don’t care what anyone says. I loved disco. There’s nothing better to dance to then disco. But the 70s gave us the best rock ‘n’ roll to now be known as classic rock ‘n’ roll. We had it all in music was every bit a part of it. There was something for however you were feeling. I loved the Pop, the oldies, the crooners Dean Martin Tom Jones, of course Elvis big Elvis fan😁 Big Hair Bands, we had it all. Yes, we’ve had a sweet life.
This has been my ‘happy song’ ever since it was released in 1979 and I was 13. Always puts a smile on my face and you can never go wrong with any song that features Michael McDonald aka The Silver Fox.
Another great "brothers" band is The Bellamy Brothers " Just Let your Love Flow"
"If I Said You Have A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me" "Old Hippies" "Lover's Live Longer"
Listen to the music is my favorite and one you may have heard
You just did Michael McDonald’s Solo song last week, and this is him with the Doobie Brothers.
Remember the guy with the hair and beard, singing and then he kissed the girl who sang on the song?
McDonald's solo career consists of nine studio albums and a number of singles, including the 1982 hit "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)".
Michael H. McDonald (born February 12, 1952) is an American singer, keyboardist and songwriter known for his distinctive, soulful voice and as a member of Steely Dan (1973-1974), and the Doobie Brothers (1975-1982, 1987, 2019-present). McDonald wrote and sang several hit singles with the Doobie Brothers, including "What a Fool Believes", "Minute by Minute", and "Takin' It to the Streets." McDonald has also performed as a prominent backing vocalist on numerous recordings by artists including Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, and Kenny Loggins.
The Doobie Brothers were a huge 70's band. You'll get a list of their hits from your listeners. I just wanted to comment on Mike. A good friend ran sound for him for years, so I hung quite a bit. Mike is not only a hugely talented guy, but he is a stellar human being. Also, they weren't Brothers, but the name was appropriate for the times! 😊
This song was co-written by Michael Macdonald (singer) and Kenny Loggins (they both recorded versions). It’s about a guy who gets together with an ex that he completely blew it with and is still so clueless he thinks he still has a chance when she was clear he doesn’t. Professor of Rock has a great episode where he interviews Kenny Loggins (also a legend you might want to react to) about the writing of this song. Kenny and Micheal collab on the amazing This Is It, could Kenny Loggins to start with.
Apparently, the mics are Sennheiser MD-409s
CCR, Doobies, Three Dog Night = ultra thick radio play catalogs back then, and into now.
Doobies are legend
One of my favorite bands ever. Saw their final tour in the mid 80’s. They went out with a Blaze. Onstage. 😂 Next you need “Long Train Running”, and “China Grove”. There are so maybe…🤟🏼
You do know they are still touring and have put out new albums since then right?
Blackwater is their most memorable song. It may not be their best or most popular but its the song you don't forget.
Michael Mcdonald was part of the Doobie Brothers and had a solo career after that. There's really no one like him. Amazing.
Omg the Doobies are a huge rabbit hole to go down. Takin it to the Streets!
no one ever tried to dissect what "brother" means. It was just the Doobie Brothers.
And this is a live performance, too!! When you hear the differences in the studio version after this version, and see how close both versions are, you will see how tight this band is.
This is a an awesome live version, the studio version is cleaner but this is gorgeous.
She is not lying to him. He is trying to recreate an old relationship with her and deceiving himself that she will return to his life and that it's not really over. " No wise man has the power, to reason away, "
LOVE the DOOBIES!!! ..and, again: YOU can "SPOT" Michael McDonald - ANYWHERE he sings....just such a UNIQUE VOICE... I know you enjoyed his "I Keep Forgetting", the other day!! DOOBIES have a LOT of GREAT TUNES!! ENJOY!!!
I love all Doobie songs! They put out so many amazing songs, both the old ones and the later ones.
Love the Doobie Brothers
On my own! Michael’s duet with Patty Labelle. You need to hear it!
Hey BP you just reacted to Michael McDonald "i keep forgetting" about a week ago....YES this is Michael McDonald Also!! he joined DB when one of the band mates became ill, he set the world on fire!!
They may not be related, but they Doobie brothers!!!
There are two types of mic, condenser (delicate used in studios) and dynamic (more rugged, used on stage). That mic looks a bit like a Sennheiser MD4 dynamic mic but not exactly. Who knows, you're going to have to look at historic dynamic mics from the mid 70's through mid 80's to find out for sure. And it is the second type of brother, the no relation type.
If you want to bop, there is nothing better than their Listen to the Music.
I loved the song when it came out in 1979. But it wasn’t until I looked at the lyrics recently that I realised it was about a man who mistakenly thinks that they had a connection in the past. But it turns out that even though he was in love with her, she barely remembered him.
These guys were very GOOD musicians also, some of the best in the business.
You heard the lead singer, Michael McDonald a few days ago with Don. It was his solo song, I Keep Forgetting. Michael has a very unique voice. Hard not to recognize. You won’t be disappointed by The Doobie Brothers catalogue or Michael’s. Thanx. Love, from Oklahoma 🤍
PS-Give Simply Red a go, please. Begin with I Keep Holding On. Also Bobby Caldwell, What You Won’t Do For Love.
Doobie Brothers also sing "China Grove".......check it out.........LOVE ME SOME DOOBIE BROTHERS. Saw them on May 30, 1975.... Tampa Stadium.......Along with The Eagles, Seals and Croft, Charlie Daniels Band, Linda Ronstadt.....My first concert...........

Ah, Michael and that blue-eyed soul. Facts. He was on several Steely Dan tracks on background vocals. There's a great interview with him on how difficult it was to do those backing tracks for the Dan. Apparently, it was pretty intense.
I believe the Mic's that were used, were the Sennheiser MD409 or the E409
I think you’d love Takin It to the Streets. It was the start of the second era of the Doobies. The first era was more mellow. More early 70s. Michael moved them into a more soul vibe. Both eras are amazing!
You've got to see their outdoor concert in La. It's unbelievable. Please please check it out
What a fucking grooven classic
I commented before on Long Train Running but Black Water is another one of their great songs. I am a daughter of a hippie so I am well versed of all the early 7Os music. I even have all of her original vinyl. Doobie Brothers got their name because they couldn't come up with a name for their group. Their neighbor suggested Doobie Brothers because they enjoyed smoking pot
Michael McDonald, from my hometown Ferguson Mo. , proud to say that
He's known for having pretty close to a perfect voice. There's even kind of a joke about it in the movie The 40 year old virgin. When he walks into the electronics store every single TV is playing Michael McDonald singing to demonstrate the quality of the audio products and he gets really mad and he's saying something about how much more Michael McDonald does he have to hear or something like that.
Every song on their albums were hits! Michael McDonald also sang for other groups and later solo or in duets: jazz-rock!
Ooooh! This takes me back to the roller rink! Nostalgia hurts sometimes. Michael MacDonald’s voice is ALL OVER the 70’s and 80’s like he owned them. And he did. So funky! Amazing voice!
Yes!!🔥And NYC was loving them too back in that era! Now Michael with “On My Own” duet with the legendary Patti LaBelle❤
HARMONIES❤❤❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥the real deal
My favorite Doobies song! It could go on for 10 more minutes and I would be 100% ok with it. Michael McDonald's voice is like velvet. I concur with an earlier comment suggesting his song with Patti LaBelle "On My Own" and "Yah Mo Be There" with James Ingram.
There was a TV show back in the day called "What's Happening". There was a full episode about the black kids loving the Doobies' music hearing it on the radio. They went to a concert and only found out then that the Doobies were white. I am pretty sure there are YT vids of that episode. Worth looking for them.
Michael McDonald's - I Keep Forgettin' We're Not In Love Anymore and You Belong To Me -- great songwriter and collaborator in the 70s & 80s! Keep up the good work!
BP would recognise I keep forgettin' immediately and he would shout out REGULATORS! MOUNT UP!
They have a list of hit songs as long as your arm. And they are still going today.
LONG TRAIN RUNNIN is so great!! TAKIN IT TO THE STREETS! 😊DB top of my playlist for DECADES! ❤
The lead singer is Michael McDonald! He sings. I keep forgettin, & also he has a hit with Pattie Labelle!
