The entire album is brilliant - Breakfast in America
With one of the absolute greatest covers in music history.
FACT
it really is a masterwork
Still my favorite album from growing up!!
@@rebeccawolf4961 This.
Supertramp, Chicago, Queen, Steely Dan, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, we had the best music in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
yup! Im so grateful I had this incredible music in my youth
What about Bachmann Turner Overdrive?
@@hk45c62 YEP them too. Taking care of business ( the dirty version )
You're definitely forgetting the 60's, where truly it all began. There's a mountain of iconic bands that inspired those of the 70's and 80's. Possibly the best artists ever were hatched and rose to fame a decade earlier.
@@razorgee2873 , nobody's forgetting anything. Just talking about certain bands. Enhance your calm.
My youngest son is 1 year older than you. When he was 15 he came home telling me about Supertramp & asking if I had heard of them. I laughed & said, I bought the album when I was pregnant with you; it's in my bedroom. BONUS - he also found my Jimi Hendrix music.
Many years ago my teen 'discovered' Pink Floyd and couldn't wait to tell me. yeah, sweet girl, Mommy knows
🗣That's so cool. Great mom.
So jealous. I raised a metal head that loved Greenday. I tried him with Hendrix and all the greats and he shut me down.
Acually, the whole album, "Breakfast in America", is a banger. Take your time.... love Supertramp.👍
This is one of my favorite groups of the 70s, this one, Goodbye Stranger, Take the Long Way Home, Breakfast in America, Bloody Well Right... there's a bunch and the lyrics are *all fantastic on top of such great music.
Man that saxophone lays me flat every time.
Would love to see him react to all of those
Love Long Way Home!
Goodbye Stranger is my favorite Supertramp song!
Baker Street is another Iconic Sax song.
The stank face when the sax solo made this soon to be 66-year old smile, and almost laugh out loud. There are certain bands that have that effect initially, Supertramp is definitely one of them.
When the guy looks like Jesus you know it's gonna rock
Best Comment of the Day
Wasn’t the lead singer with “Yes” ?
He's definitely nailed down the song.
@@Kikatebnpagan No
@@MatthewC137 ok I’ve done some homework and it was the band Rush.. it was that they both have high pitched voice. OK ! Harsh No.. stick it up your….
Still have my Breakfast vinyl. Whole album is a masterpiece ☘️🇺🇲
Ditto…
@@xtrmfc Me too - doesn't make me any younger - lol !!
Bloody Marvelous
I don’t have an original, but I have a newer repress. I also have it on SACD. Love that whole album.
Still have mine! Love it!
one of the most underated bands of all time
yas.. every fucking word
Without a doubt !
you can't be serious
One of my favorites of all time.
Imagine using the word underrated referring to Supertramp. How does using a word wrong make you feel better?
Try “Give A Little Bit”. That will be the true test if you ever heard Supertramp at any point in time.
The song is about indoctrination being told how you should act, live and breathe as your growing up and then one day something snaps inside of you and you question who you are and the things you were taught to be.
Brilliant reaction!
One of the best bands of the 70s. Simply amazing. Try "Goodbye Stranger" or "Take the Long Way Home" next
Also In The Quietest Moment is Beautiful to me
Agreed on all things said! ❤
Goodbye Stranger is an absolute must.
I'm 62 years old and I've been hearing this song since I was in high school, but this is the first time I've "listened" to it. Wow.
I know what you mean. This right now is making me review my life since I first heard the Logical song… Pegasus, you are so good at going deep into the meaning of the song. You are so wise. And so well intentioned as a father. That is admirable, and your daughters are lucky to have you as a caring, loving dad.
62 yo also this was a time
I was also in high-school and was really into progressive rock. The message/ lyrics often resonated with me. I saw these guys, Rush, Kansas and others live at the time.
@@ricksurratt9034 Also 62 yes it was a blast
Also 62 and very confused how you chose to never listen to one of the greatest songs and bands ever. Then you told the world about it.
Supertramp has a deep catalog and they are phenomenal.
Supertramp and ELO are bands that had it all! Genius lyrics and musical composition. I loved the music from the 60's - late 90's!
I've seen Supertramp twice. They are incredible in concert. All accomplished musicians who all play multiple instruments. They run around stage trading instruments and never missing a beat. React to "Dreamer" another fantastic song. They had so many hits in the 80's
Accually most of their hits are from the 70s, the only song from the 80's (1982) that I like a lot is "It's Raining Again", whereas I like most songs off of the following three albums: "Crime of the Century" (1974), "Even in the Quietest Moments" (1977), and "Breakfast in America" (1979).
@@richardcramer1604 that's true... I guess I just listened to them more in the 80's and seen them in concert
I'm a 66 year old white retired widower fan since I found you reacting to Ren - my favorite new artist. Glad you found Supertramp - my all time favorite band. I saw them live twice in the late 70's while serving in the US Marine Corps. Epic performances both times.
66 same o same o retired widower but Ex-Navy '75 to '86
One of the best concerts I have been to. Of course this was back in the late 70's butthe concert was awesome.
Yes! My favorite Supertramp song!
Mine too
And 'Goodbye Stranger!'
For me, this song speaks to how we all typically follow the same path.... we all go to school, we all write the exams, we all are taught to play nice together, that we should pursue secondary education, that we will meet someone, create a family.... and live within the guidelines of this world that has been built to contain and conform, while giving the illusion of individuality and inspiration. The lead singer has been told who he is supposed to be for his entire life, and now as a young adult, he is sitting back and realizing that he doesn't even know who he is.
"Please tell me who I am"
Live your life, just don't live the life that your are being told to live. Create your own, and if that involves defying standards, breaking some rules, and finding your own path sometimes... you will be all the happier for it later in life.
Amen. Well said! Always been my motto.
As a great-grandmother I still attend concerts with my grandkids. This usually occurs when the concert is away. Grandkids will call & i hear "road trip grandma?" I respond with when & where?... after we hang up I book a room and wait for the day.
Let's just say I heard a comedian say "I'm a teenager trapped in a wrinkled package"
Conformity…slavery
Keith, you nailed it.
Roger Hodgson voice always came across clear as water. You could always hear every word and punctuation. Master.
Many Great songs from Supertramp or his Solo career.
Take the Long Way Home
Goodbye Stranger
Give a Little Bit
Dreamer
Bloody Well Right
My favorite... Give me Love, Give me life...
Don't listen to while driving. Your foot goes down on gas petal. 😊
SO glad you finally found SUPERTRAMP! 💚 Now you’re in for a ride!
As you go through your journey, there's no way you can possibly imagine the amount of talent that hit us, beginning with the Beatles and the British invasion. Literally every month, we were hit with new superstar bands and solo artists that went on for decades. Music from all kinds of genres exploded on the scene through radio, record stores, and live concerts. As a generation, we were peppered with innovation, creativity, and pure genius. The 60's through 80's was truly the golden age of music and will remain at the pinnacle as the greatest music of all time. Enjoy your journey of discovery. You've only scratched the surface.
That's exactly what i was going to say, word for word . How did you do that? Lol, Not really but thats what i was thinking. Not word for word though. That's impossible. heh heh
Rodger Hodgson is amazing. Supertramp killed it back in the day! The entire Breakfast in America album is a classic. Both their catalogue is massive. "School", "Even in the Quietest Moments", "Fool's Overture", "Gone Hollywood"...all amazing!
Your analysis was bloody well right!
I seen whut you done thar. 🧐 LOL
Yes more Super Tramp
We used to listen as Teens full of the typical angst.Echoed it perfectly. No one needed to speak. The song said it for us.
An overlooked Supertramp song that never fails to make me feel good is Poor Boy. They are all classically trained musicians, great lyrics, great music.
From a criminally overlooked album. (no pun)
You've got to do "Long Way Home" next. Then you will be ready for "Goodbye, Stranger". Rabbit hole of variety.
Omg Supertramp! Absolutely love this band. Music of my youth
‘SCHOOL’ has to be next.
I love Supertramp, so many great sounds and songs. “School” “Crime of the Century” “Asylum” are great songs to check out.
👍🏼
❤❤❤
When I saw that initial reaction I thought “School” should be the next listen!
Supertramp was always a musician’s band. Exceptionally skilled. The lyrics were a bonus.
The London-based progressive rock band Supertramp got their name from The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp, a 1908 novel by Welsh writer William Henry Davies.
Dive Deeper into Supertramp. One of th3 Great Super Groups of the 70's! "School, Goodbye Stranger, Dreamer, Give a Little Bit, Take the Long Way Home, It's Raining Again".
The list of top 40 Supertramp songs is huge. And most of them have become classics. Deep rabbit hole here.
There was such talent in the 70's
Oh my God! I have such wonderful memories and always loved Super tramp.
Yes please, more Supertramp. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with their discography.
Listening to this again in my mid 50s, it just makes me wish our institutionalized education system taught children HOW to think rather than WHAT to think.
I do miss the old rock that included the saxophone. Yes, it was saxy! Kids did as much air sax as air guitar.
Love being GenX! 💯
What a great group, plenty of hits to pick from the music is out of this world but then I might be biased 😁
The first song I heard by Supertramp was “School”...
I’ve been a HUGE fan ever since. That was 1974. ❤❤
Supertramp was the first concert I attended. They played Jarry Park in Montréal, summer of 1979. It was a gift for my 11th birthday. The experience has had an impact on the way I've appreciated music all through my life.
I enjoy your reactions so much. I'm a 74 y.o. mother of 4 and grandmother of 8 and your wife and little girls are blessed to have you. You sound like the type of father every child deserves.
The lyrics are brilliant!! Everyone who gets stuck in the world grind can relate to this.
Love Supertramp! Their stuff is so creative, their instrumentation is very unique, and their lyrics can cut to the quick. My favorite song of theirs is Long Way Home (with some killer harmonica), but they have so many great songs for you to discover. Thanks for sharing this one! 🙂
This is one of those songs that you hear for the first time and wonder how you went this long without having heard it before. By the time you hear it a few times though you feel like you have been enjoying listening to it your whole life.
Heh. I was eight when it hit the radio. I have literally been enjoying it all my life. And nearly 40 years later, this song still sounds fresh and relevant.
Being a child in the 70's this band cannot be left out of amazing bands! He always reminded me of Geddy from Rush!
This song is in the top five of my best of all time!
- 5:15 - You look so shook! That is the power of this song, my dude. It can hit you right between the eyes and pierce your heart at the same moment. All of the Breakfast In America album is worth exploring...brilliant work.
Supertramp is a British band. The song itself was written by the singer Roger Hodgson based on his own experience as a kid, having a carefree childhood, but then being sent to boarding school. He learned guitar and started writing songs pretty early in his teens while at boarding school. Often, his songs can be deeply personal and spiritual in their content.
God, Supertramp is my Mum's music. Haven't heard this in forever.
Your mom has good taste!
I grew up listening to this band. My older brother was a fan.I cant think of anything from them that I dislike. Crime of the Century is my favorite album of theirs and Fools Overture my favorite song.My brother is ten years old than me, so I got to hear a lot of the late 70's and early 80's music.
Take the Long Way Home should be next.
Saw them on their last ever show in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, their last track was "take the long way home"
Supertramp's album "Crime of the Century" from 1974 was their first masterpiece album. More of a progressive sound than the more commercial "Breakfast In America". Check out the songs "School", "Hide In Your Shell", and "Dreamer". Awesome!!!
So I had to analyze this song for my 12th grade AP English class. It tuned me on to a lifelong love foe Sipertramp
Supertramp doesn't seem to get near as much play time as they deserve, especially these days. Always loved their music. Glad to see you doing a reaction to them, BP. Hugs to baby girl, Brightly.
John Helliwell on sax, killed it.
Yay!!! Can’t tell you how much this song meant to me and resonated, as a teenager in the late 70’s. One of may favourite bands of all time. Please go down the Supertramp rabbit hole. You won’t be disappointed.
Also check out Roger Hodgson, the singer, who wrote and arranged this song. He’s a very humble man, with an exceptional talent.
I saw the exact moment the lyrics caught you! Your eyes got so wide, your jaw dropped, and your stunned face just froze. Thank you for the tribute to excellence.
Your kids are lucky to have you as a dad. Big time. You know you have to guide them but you have to back off enough for them to learn things on their own too.
Breakfast in America is another good Supertramp song!
You nailed this one perfectly. The end of innocence; learning to conform at the price of losing your identity and then not really understanding why.
Bro, I’m in my mid 50s. You got a great show. I grew up with this stuff!❤🎉
This was like the best album of 1979. Its still in my top tier. They had been touring for a decade and were at the top of their game when they crafted this. Albums like this are why we listened to the whole 30-40 minutes worth all at once.
Dude. I am 57, and have heard this song SO many times. I was today years old when I learned that the singer is male.
Mind…blown 😳🤯
Still just crossing songs off of my list left and right!! Lol Love Supertramp!! Take the long way home, Goodbye stranger, Give a little bit, & Dreamer are just a few of their more popular songs!! They are definitely worth a deep dive!!
I haven't heard Supertramp in a long while! One of the best light shows at a concert ever, was Supertramp performing. If you react to only one other Supertramp, let it be the song School. It's a wonderful piece of musical composition.
Crime of the century is in my top 5 as a former pro musician and listener
A pure Genius gem
My number two band after Queen and it has been that way for 50 years! Check out Dreamer next. Then follow the rabbit hole.... :)
This one always gets me in the same way it got you. We are taught to get rid of our innocence, our sense of fun, our creativity, our curiosity awe and child like wonder at the world in order to become an adult, "logical", "sensible". But We can be all of those and still be adult-like and responsible.
Breakfast in America and Dreamer are a couple of other Supertramp classics.
Hey Black P, A good friend of mine in the 80s turned me on to SUPERTRAMP ! Now life long fan!😀👌👍👍✌
Spent my teen years roller skating to Supertramp! Love, love, love their music!
This song still hits all these years later. Don’t stop believing in the magic of life as well as being practical and think for yourself, don’t buy into the bs
In a lot of cases when people are singing one can't tell their original accents, British, American, Scottish, Welsh etc. But here the British is audible.
Fantastic band, great album.
Whenever I hear this song it brings me back to being a kid in the summer of 79. This song played nonstop.
Hell Yes, Let’s Go!
Brilliance in Musicianship…We had a great variety of Rock in the 80’s!
We all owned the album - Breakfast in America.
Supertramp is one of my favorites. They are always jazzy and always make you think at least a little. The whole Breakfast in America album is a classic. The title track is also amazing!
One of the greatest albums ever produced titled "Breakfast in America (1979)" by British Rock group Supertramp. The logical Song done back (45) years ago. Is just one of the greatest tracks on that album. Brilliant!
Supertramp is the first band my little girl of 5 years fell in love with.i played it while picking her up from Kindergarden and when we arrived home she wanted to say in the bike and continue listening - the first time I ever saw her enjoy almost trance in music. It’s still her go to place when she needs some peace - and she doesn’t even speak English. She „loves the melodies“.
This is one of those songs that makes more sense the older you get.
YAY! Supertramp! One of my favorite groups of all time! They are quite the rabbit hole and almost everything they’ve produced is amazing. The Crime of the Century album is a complete masterpiece.
Supertramp's....Goodbye Stranger. Raunchy lyrics, serious banger!!
bang 'er
Dreamer, Give a Little Bit, School, Even in the Quietest Moments, Child of Vision, Goodbye Stranger, and so many more….. Supertramp are a goldmine of superbly crafted unique songs. ❤
The music from this time period,,was so good,,, I'm 56 best times,,,,,,,
One of the greatest full albums ever recorded; every single song is phenomenal! You've entered the Supertramp zone of rock and roll. It is a genre of rock all it's own; they killed it with dozens of hits over decades. They are in my top 10 favorite bands to listen to, especially while working and I need entertaining but calming music in the background.
This song, like many others of the era (particularly several Pink Floyd songs) are about the indoctrination of children rather than the education of children via school systems. I grew up in this era, and believe me, the schools back then had "certain criteria" where they told you what to believe. Fortunately, I lived across from a public library and LOVED to read... so I didn't buy into what they were selling. I actually ended up in trouble in school because of that.
Saxophones were banned by the church at one stage because they were so different when created that they were labelled as 'Devil's Horn'.
Definitely more Supertramp. As soon as I saw you hearing it I knew you would like it
The lead singer was sent off to traditional British boarding school at (I think) 12. It was a nightmare for a sensitive artist type. Actually, it can be a nightmare for most.
Roger Hodgson was sent to boarding school for ten years when he was 9 years old.
@@donnakubiski5572 Thanks for that clarification, I was going from memory.
Man, I did SO MUCH self work to change my ways so I could be the parent I didn’t have but always wanted and deserved to have. This song is that question, who am I really? And who do I want to be? The pondering place we all get to as we mature and begin to prioritize personal growth and development to become who we want to be. And for many of us, it’s parenthood that thrusts is into that headspace.
It speaks to all the stages of life. That is one thing that makes it great.
Goodbye Stranger is gold!!
My favorite Supertramp - *_"Even in the Quietest Moments"_*
Number 1 on all my play lists. Story of my life. LOL.
I think of my educational experience, and how much good it actually did me to go into debt to get my degree, and I feel like Milton in "Office Space": I was told there would be success.
There are 2 singers in this group and they both have the same voice Amazing. Listen to more of there songs, they are refreshing!
Supertramp is unique. I'd normally listen to the entire albums at each listening.
Right? Me too
This is his reflection on his time at boarding school
I literally wore “Breakfast in America” out I played it so many times.
One of the best albums ever!
Supertramp is one of my all-time favorites. I think they are the most complete band ever, so many layers to their music.
The passage of time from youthful idealism to the harsh realities of adulthood and the crippling demands of societal conformity. My mother used to say, "Even a golden cage is still a cage; live free."
