Art Garfunkel sings this one. Generally it was Paul Simon taking the lead vocal a bit more often. Art Garfunkel basically sung, and had a very sweet high voice for songs like this and for harmonies. Paul Simon was the writer.

This is why completely blind reactions simply don't work. You need to do at least do basic research before you react. Paul Simon wrote the songs, and Art Garfunkel sang most of them with Simon providing Harmony. Although not intentional, asking "what did Garfunkel contribute?", is actually an insult. Again, unintentional. Garfunkel is the angelic voice in this song. Paul Simon's harmony kicks in at the third verse, and the combination is majestic. It's only my opinion but blind reactions are fine as long as you at least get some background on the names of the performers. You did the same thing with ABBA.
Garfunkel sang. Paul Simon wrote the song and played keyboard. Paul Simon wrote many hit songs. And went on to have a strong solo career after he and Art broke up. Yes, I am old enough to remember that! Lol

Scarborough Fair/Canticle. SF is a traditional English folk song from the Middle Ages. In the background Paul sings Canticle, which uses reworked lyrics from an anti war song he wrote previously, with a new melody mostly composed by Art. I grew up listening to this song and only recently learned that Canticle was a separate song in the background. I can only pick up on the lyrics when they continue after a line of SF has ended. I still have my original LP of Bridge Over Troubled Water (and my 70s Technics direct drive turntable set up). The entire album is wonderful. A movie was made in 2017, it referenced The Only Living Boy In New Yotk (a song from this album) as the film title. Another song title off this album that became a film title was Baby Driver.
This song was released in 1970 when the Vietnam War was in full gear. This song speaks of friendship so strong they would lay down their life (the bridge) for the other.Even though Simon and Garfunkel had never been to war, they had a friend like one who would lay down their life for each other. In 1993 I went to D.C., my uncle who had been in the war asked me to please go to the Vietnam War Wall Memorial to trace on paper the name of one of his best friends who had died in that war. When I gave him the traced paper with his friend's name on it, he choked up and couldn't even hardly speak. They were that close of friends. I was blessed to have five best friends in my life who I know each of us would have died for the other. We were there together during the worst and best times in our lives. I pray everyone has at least one real friend like my uncle and five like I have in their lives, because my friends have been there for me and unless I was in the hospital, I was there for them. I remember waking up after a 7-hour long surgery to find 22 people in my room! It was 3 of those best friends, my family, and their families!
Working with Larry Knechtel on the piano part, Paul Simon said he wanted a gospel feel. He's Jewish, but like so many Jewish composers, he appreciated the wealth of expression in Christian music.
@@AP-gb3ehGarfunkel was also the writer. Sound of Silence being most known. Once you listen to them enough, you'll know just by the style of the song who wrote what:)

No doubt one of the most beautiful pop songs every written. If you are not moved by this music, you are not listening. Art Garfunkel's voice is heaven sent.
A lot of people have covered this but no one filled it with emotional dynamics quite like Elvis when he performed it live in Vegas back in the 70s. Worth checking out.
Paul Simon said he conceived of the song as a kind of ode to compassion, in the gospel style. Art Garfunkel's pure, gentle voice was the perfect vehicle to deliver Simon's timeless lyrics. The song is still played regularly in churches and at funerals. In the end, the most important thing we have is compassion.
What I like about your reaction vids, is that you showcase the songs and artists that I grew up with. I'm 73, imagine all of these artists and their music debuting not just in your life, but the first time the World ever heard them. ---> The music has held its own and endured the test of time. Much of this music has only been heard by older and forgotten generations, and, for the most part, have been relegated to the annals of musical history. These Reaction videos reconnected me to feelings and experiences that exist mainly in the minds of an aging and disappearing population. ---> You brought back memories of laughter, and loving, with tears of sadness and joy, fleeting treasures that I thought I'd never know again. It really elevates my soul when your reactions and mine combine in a shared experience, and I see the music touch your heart the same way it touched mine. ---> It seems entirely inadequate to just say thank you, but, from the depths of my soul, THANK YOU!
Garfunkel co-wrote and sang. Paul Simon went on to have a great solo career! I DO know that Garfunkel was "Darkness" in "hello Darkness, my old friend!" He had a blind friend that he vowed to help get through college so he would show up every day and his friend would greet him that way! Paul Simon has always been phenomenal!!! REAL Folk music is more Peter, Paul and Mary .... Puff the Magic Dragon is my favorite. Also The Seekers did a lot of folk music!!!
I was 15 years old in 1983 and the first concert I ever attended was the reunion of Simon and Garfunkel. Hundreds of concerts since but this one sticks in my mind.
Art Garfunkel is singing the entire song. Paul Simon's voice comes in on the harmonies. Paul, perhaps one of the greatest poets of a generation, wrote the lyrics. This came out in the late 60s, and today we live in a world where this is an oldie, but back then when it was brand new, and people had never heard this melody line, it grabbed people and shook them, as it meandered its way through the story. Amazing song, from the text, the lead vocal, the harmonies, the instrumental arrangement, even the studio production with the _gravitas_ tone, the percussion sounding like distant artillery fire. Everything about it said here was a song that had an arc, from a quiet angelic voice, to an epic anthem!
‘Cecilia,’ is another song you’ve probably heard. “Celia. You’re breaking my heart. You’re shaking my confidence, baby. Oh Cecilia, I’m down on my knees. I’m begging you please, to come home. Come on home.” Paul Simon wrote the songs, and though Art Garfunkel is credited as the lead singer, I’d argue that they were a perfect blend of harmonies and melodies; making them both lead singer. I have sung first, second, and lyrical soprano. Each has its challenges. I’ve always enjoyed singing second and lyrical, best, but second is most challenging. So I know that Simon’s vocals are quite good. Harmony is the hardest part to hear, and get right. IMO. I believe they both had perfect pitch, and could play by ear too. Just when you think this song can’t get more ethereal, beautiful, and awe-inspiring, Paul joins in, and sends you soaring higher. Fun fact, Paul Simon was once married to Carrie Fischer. Princess Leia, herself!
Simon wrote but Art definitely sang it. Also, Sounds of Silence was written by Art about his friend Sandy Greenberg who is blind. The story of their friendship and the song will hit your heart deep. This song always makes me cry because it came out at a time in my life when as a teenager I was navigating the search for true friends. It makes me cry now as I see those true friends die one by one.
It's bitter sweet because it's about self-sacrifice. "Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay ME down" ~to get you through this.~ and later to "Ease your mind" Makes a perfect wedding song.
Paul Simon is the composer and lyricist. He is the shorter of the 2 and sings the lower register. Art Garfunkel just sings. He sings the higher register. Paul Simon has a very deep catalog of lyrically rich songs. Try these: The Sparrow, At The Zoo, A Poem on the Underground Wall, Richard Cory, A Most Peculiar Man and Dangling Conversation. If you are into profound lyrics then be prepared for an orgasmic experience when you listen.
Such a beautiful song. They made an amazing pair. Art Garfunkel is singing this one. I saw this video when they were live at Madison Square Garden during one of their reunion tours. Breathtaking!
Art Garfunkel sang the lead here, with Paul Simon on the harmonies. Session musicans did the instrumentals. The song was used by George McGovern during the 1972 Presidential election.
Heard it when it was newly released when I was a teenager. Thanks guys for rediscovering some of the greatest music ever! Haven't heard it for an incredible many many decades. The beauty power and majesty brought tears to my eyes like never before. I remember our choir playing this ,but nothing compares to ART GARFUNKEL'S vocal performance!
Art sings, Paul writes, sings and plays guitar. They came out of the Greenwich folk revival along with Bob Dylan, Joanie Mitchell, Peter, Paul and Mary, et al where everyone wrote and sang their own stuff in intimate little clubs, often with only a guitar as accompaniment. In this song, Art has the first verse, Paul the second and they join together for the third.
Paul's hair is Art's moustache. Now you'll never un-see it. Paul Simon did the songwriting and the arrangements. He played guitar when they were live. Art Garfunkel carried the beautiful high notes like an angel. He didn't do anything but sing, but he had the prettiest voice ever, so he didn't have to. Simon & Garfunkel were huge in the 60's. This was probably their 3rd biggest hit, after "The Sound of Silence" and "Mrs. Robinson." Also check out "Scarborough Fair" and "The Boxer." But even further, all of their deep cuts are worth a listen at least. Later in the 80's, Paul had a respectable solo revival career, bringing in "world music" (aka African harmonies) to mainstream American music. You'll get around to that eventually, but that's for later on.
Paul Simon played the guitar and wrote basically all the songs...you'll never see Garfunkle play an instrument...react to their live concert in Central Park....500,000 people showed up for just them !!!!
He didn’t write Scarborough Fair is and English folk song from the late 1600s the melody Paul uses was written by Mark Anderson in 1947 who gave it to Matin Carthy … we were singing the version Paul used in school in 1961…
And those 500,000 people went silent when they started singing. The cheering and noise was limited to in between songs or after certain New York lines.
They say people no longer read poetry. They say there are no poets. But every generation has their poets, and the poets are in their music. This was our poetry, and Paul Simon was one of the greatest poets in decades. Listen to the music. Poetry blooms from our songs, even in songs starting back to the 60s and 70s, but Paul Simon rises above them all, otherwise, this music, his poetry, wouldn’t have touched your heart today. Hugs, dear friends.
Honestly I never cared about this song until I saw a video of Elvis singing this live in Vegas 1970. Its a must see. I was barely getting into RUclips and I started to check out Elvis performances that I had never seen before and everything was more than I could've imagined. Nothing against Simon & Garfunkel. I just love the way Elvis sings this song.
Art Garfunkel sings the lead on this song. Paul Simon does the harmonies. Paul Simon pretty much wrote all of their lyrics and music and he wrote and devised all of the orchestration and instrumentation.
There is such an incredible power to playing sweet, soft, and gentle, and there are few who were sweeter than Art. Man, he just stops you cold. Can't help but get pulled right in. They took us all to church with this #1.
Larry Knechtel played piano. Simon wrote and produced the song. Simon insisted that Art sing it, but later regretted giving it to Garfunkel. Bridge over Troubled Water was his baby. Although "Graceland" was his favorite. Garfunkel was the voice. Paul had a very successful SOLO career.
Paul was once asked why he chose to team up with Art, and he replied, "Have you ever heard an angel sing?"

Art Garfunkel is lead singer on this song but not all of their songs. Paul Simon wrote this song and most of their songs.
All the songs , Garfunkel said so in a documentary. Simon wrote the lyrics and music
@@AP-gb3eh Songwriters for Scarborough Fair: Arthur Garfunkel / Dp / Frank Peterson / Paul Simon
@@AP-gb3ehGarfunkel was also the writer. Sound of Silence being most known. Once you listen to them enough, you'll know just by the style of the song who wrote what:)
The whole LP is worth a listen. The competition between artist in the 60’s & 70’s required LP’s not just hits.
dawg, these two dudes have some of the best harmonies in the business. BOTH are atomical vocalists.
One of my FAVORITE DUOS of ALL TIME!! SO, SO GOOD!!! You oughta check out Scarborough Fair / Canticle.....LOVE IT!!! ENJOY, FELLAS!! THANKS for the REACTIONS!!
Check out Elvis singing this from Las Vegas. Paul Simon was there and said how are we supposed to top that
They also did Sound of Silence. Then Disturbed did a cover and got a billion views on youtube.
Elvis did a beautiful version of this song as well...
The version from Elvis on Tour is my absolute favorite 🎉❤
My mom loved Simon & Garfunkle. I'll never forget her singing these songs.
No doubt one of the most beautiful pop songs every written. If you are not moved by this music, you are not listening. Art Garfunkel's voice is heaven sent.
This and Sound of Silence, gets me every time.
The orchestral part , sublime . The vocals superb. Put these two parts together , unbelievably good.
A lot of people have covered this but no one filled it with emotional dynamics quite like Elvis when he performed it live in Vegas back in the 70s. Worth checking out.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Love this generation reacting to music that meant something. Thank you 👍
A classic song to this day.
Thanks for sharing.
Art Garfunkel’s angelic voice is leading on this song. Check out the live version in Central Park. Very good!
That's Art singing 🔥
The Harmonies 😊 Elvis does a great rendition of this too.Cecelia is a fun song by them. Great reaction and Peace out guys 🙏✌️☮️
One of the best duet's ever.
This vocal IS Art Garfunkel's angelic voice.
I absolutely love this song! Makes me cry every time! My late husband sang it to both of our children when they were infants... I miss him so much 😢
What I like about your reaction vids, is that you showcase the songs and artists that I grew up with.
You have to do “The Boxer”. It’s a must. ❤❤❤ And folk music!! There’s so much to explore.
Garfunkel is the beautiful voice you hear, angelic. Simon & Garfunkel are best live! A beautiful thing to watch. I highly recommend “THE BOXER”.
Didn’t write it … its a cover …it’s an old English folk song from the 1600s… the melody Paul uses was written by Mark Anderson 1947…
It's bitter sweet because it's about self-sacrifice. "Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay ME down" ~to get you through this.~ and later to "Ease your mind" Makes a perfect wedding song.
My dad used to play this for me so I always thought it was a father speaking to his daughter. “Sail on Silver Girl, I’m sailing right behind…”❤
@@tammyford2357 Another excellent applicable situation.. Better even if I dare say..
If u like this one i think you'd enjoy Kathy s song. My favourite. And Homeward Bound, close second. Also Paul Simon s My Little Town 😘
One of the greatest albums ever, every song is musically and lyrically genius
1972
Don't think this song had been released yet in 1872. 😁
Fixed.
10:47: "Perfectly put together!" There follows a splendid and sensitive bit of analysis. Well done.
You talk Classic
This IS CLASSIC. THIS IS BEAUTIFUL
You guys make a great team! Enjoyed this very much! Btw, Art Garfunkel does most of the singing.
Number one song of 1970. Garfunkel (tall one) sang this one. Beautiful!! My mom had the album. It was great.
Omg the moustache 😂😂😂😂❤
Yup. Elvis makes you FEEL the lyrics.
These were the icons of the time. I would lock myself in my room and play this album over and over again. Thanks for making remember. Peace ❤!
This song was released by Simon & Garfunkel in 1970 and won 6 Grammy in 1971. Aretha Franklin did cover and changed up this song in 1971.
There is a video of this song performed live. Art Garfunkel has a fabulous voice. One of a kind.
Once saw a beautiful soft ballet dance to this .. lends itself so well.
To me, it's gospel as sung by an angel. 🙏
Art sang this one, and frankly, if it's the song of your career, you had a good career.
Music takes your on journey's, trips in your mind and emotions, it's a wonderful adventure and something you can share with others.
I Love the quote by Basquiat, Jean-Michel: Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time.
Music can take you back to special memories.
