From Wikipedia: Hucknall's mother left the family when he was three: the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write the song. According to Hucknall, he did not realise what the song was about until it was finished: he characterized it as a song "about that moment where you know you have to leave home and make your mark, but the outside world is scary. So you’re holding back the years". He said that the line "strangled by the wishes of pater" was inspired by arguments he had with his father: according to Hucknall, the two clashed often during his teenage years "because there was no woman to act as referee"
“Strangled by the wishes of Pater, wishing for the arms of Mater” brilliant lyirics many can relate to.
For those of you who don't understand - Pater is Father, Mater is Mother. :)
So beautifully said. His voice is everything 😍
Holding on to a relationship between a child and a mother [who abandoned that child/family]. Holding on to something that just wasn't there for this singer. But you can hold on to hopes and dreams. The teacher portrays the desire for a mother figure.
You have to watch a LIVE performance. He is amazing and the band is outstanding
This guy is so phenomenal live that it’s unbelievable, saw him in concert ( which i get dragged along to reluctantly) and he was mind blowing my, unbelievably good and the band were also on another planet. In short, walked out at the end dumbstruck.
Talk about holding the mic out to the crowd, In the video of Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now (Symphonica In Rosso) Mick Hucknall walks out, the orchestra begins the song...Hucknall just says "Sing it now" The audience sings the first few lined of the song. It gave me goosies.
Hey guys. I remember this song so well. Check out “Angel” filmed by Simply Red in Harlem. Sending love from Florida🇺🇸🎷
with Wyclef :)
Mick wrote it himself when he was 17. Added the chorus later when they recorded it for their first album.
If You Don't Know Me by Now is another banger by Simply Red.😊
Great reaction. Filmed in Whitby the old abbey in the video was written about and inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula that beach was where Dracula came ashore off the ship
His... If You Don't Know Me By Now is great.
The ruins at the beginning of the video are of Whitby Abbey, the setting of the original Dracula novel.
Video shot in Whitby a seaside town north yourshire coast of England. The ruins at the cliff top is where the book and then film Dracula lived. Spooky 😉
If you want to see them live I recommend you watch the show in Sydney Opera House. Amazing.
Mick’s mum left him and his dad alone when he was young. He often talked in interviews about it over the years.
He’s still singing just as well. I’ve seen them a couple of times.
I think you’re probably thinking of ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now.’ As the cover he did.
Original by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
listen to 'Money's too tight to mention' and 'Come to my aid' also from their first album - Picture Book from 1985
“The group's frontman Mick Hucknall wrote the song when he was 17, while living at his father's house. In a 2018 interview, Hucknall said the song was inspired by a member of the teaching staff at Manchester School of Art, where Hucknall was a fine-art student: the lecturer suggested the greatest paintings are produced when the artist is working in a stream of consciousness, which Hucknall then tried to apply to songwriting - "Holding Back the Years" was the second song he wrote using this method.” Wikipedia
If You Don't Know Me is the other song you are thinking of, I think.
Great one fellas!!!
I reckon you both would love Lisa Stansfield “All Around the World” live at the Apollo
Actually surprised 😅 this was a hit when I was a little kid..... I play this when I'm drunk and emotional 😂😂😂❤
😅😂 same
@@sandranettles4833 🤣🤣💯❤️
Sungplenty iftimes live, sounds just as good, and yup…holding out the Mike for the audience. 1991 is a great version of him singing it live, but even still to this day….its definitely a classic.
The live concert in Hamburg, Germany for the A Starry Night tour (1992) will impress you!
Just pick any song from that concert.
Videos destroyed music. Close your eyes if you love the sound , if you’re touched then watch the video. Music is a auditory experience, musical film is something else
Mick named the group simply red from his love of Manchester United who wears a red football (soccer) kit, and he’s from Manchester and a regular at old Trafford the home of Manchester United
Viktus - Time (Live)
God Can Use a Broken Man - Jason Crabb, featuring Zach Williams and Trace Adkins
Good tunes!
Will try to see you in Evansville In when you come.
You guys simply (pun not intended) must react to their mindblowing version of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "If You Don't Know Me By Now).
His vocals just hit the soul. Who says A ginger has no soul 😂 If you don't know me by now is another amazing song he does. Please check out April Wine..Roller. Great reaction and Peace out guys 🙏 ✌️ ☮️
He covered an Aretha Franklin song called Angel and he had the Fugees appear on it and it was on the soundtrack of Set It Off..He also appeared with them on the American Music Awards. I don`t know if that`s the one you are thinking of or not🙂
SUNRISE By Simply Red is 🔥🔥🔥
Mick is brilliant
😂😂😂 teacher getting the ruler a full 6 inches 😮
Man how you guys can say it and keep it clean buggers me
Here we'd say teacher getting tapped to keep it clean
Love his voice! Also enjoyed your Trump impression lol😆👍
Hmm, my English teacher was really cute... Have not thought about him in years :-D

Money s too tight
This is about his mother
Gettin' closer to the Caucasians. It's real out here for a "ganster", whatever the fuck that is.
One of my favorite songs. Try Rod Stewart Maggie May (live, unplugged)...Ron Wood on acoustic guitar(Rolling Stones & Faces) 🔥You can't read the song your reacting to, because of the platinum intro...can you put the award stuff somewhere else, so we can see what your reacting to?
