From Wikipedia: Hucknall's mother left the family when he was three: the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write the song. According to Hucknall, he did not realise what the song was about until it was finished: he characterized it as a song "about that moment where you know you have to leave home and make your mark, but the outside world is scary. So you’re holding back the years". He said that the line "strangled by the wishes of pater" was inspired by arguments he had with his father: according to Hucknall, the two clashed often during his teenage years "because there was no woman to act as referee"
It’s an original song by Mick. Most artists wrote their own material back then. “ strangled by the wishes of Pater” ( father) “ wishing for the arms of Mater ( mother) “
@@rexoid0800 Apologies for getting in your way, R. Still, you probably get to see this beautiful seaside town more than I ever will so you are several strides of luck ahead of me!
@@mary-y8x8h I was just excited as i had never seen the video but recognized it straight away so was shocked to see someone mention it, which i was really glad about. Its a really nice place with a great history and they have an annual goth weekend where its basically full of vampires lol
Mick’s mum left him and his dad alone when he was young. He often talked in interviews about it over the years. He’s still singing just as well. I’ve seen them a couple of times. I think you’re probably thinking of ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now.’ As the cover he did. Original by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
He wrote this song about his mother abandoning him and his father when he was just a young boy; heartbreaking. “Wasted all of those years, wasted all of those tears”; waiting for his Mother to return 🥲
This guy is so phenomenal live that it’s unbelievable, saw him in concert ( which i get dragged along to reluctantly) and he was mind blowing my, unbelievably good and the band were also on another planet. In short, walked out at the end dumbstruck.
Thank you for reacting to this. My mother used to play their albums while i was growing up. Since she has passed, music like this really makes me feel closer to her.
Simply Red was cool when I was in 7th grade just before NSX (I was in10th grade when NSX was sooooooooooooo huge). Sooooooooooooo many great bands my entire school was in tuned to.🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴
@Krizz Kaliko Im embarrassed to say I had never heard your music, Went to listen to your music and your voice is amazing!! Music brings people together!!
“Strangled by the wishes of Pater” (father) - overbearing father. “Wishing for the arms of Mater” (mother) - for comfort. He wrote this when he was 17, a time in his life when he had to stop being a child and start facing the world and leave home. A crossroads that brought him fear and anxiety.
“Simply Red, right? That album was the bomb man” Miles Davis - talking to Mick Hucknall after bumping into him by chance at a recording studio. You should dive into that album - it caught the attention of one of the greatest musicians in history! Start with “Come To My Aid”
Video shot in Whitby a seaside town north yourshire coast of England. The ruins at the cliff top is where the book and then film Dracula lived. Spooky 😉
Holding on to a relationship between a child and a mother [who abandoned that child/family]. Holding on to something that just wasn't there for this singer. But you can hold on to hopes and dreams. The teacher portrays the desire for a mother figure.
For some reason Mick Hucknell is laughed at by many in the UK. My friend used to managed The Underworld in Camden and Mick would regularly get on the piano in the bar. My friend told me he was a regular patron but I still couldn't believe it until he walked in. He didn't need a mic as his voice was so powerful. Good memories of mine from 30yrs ago
Great reaction of this classic.. thank-you for sharing! BTW - they’re still singing/touring - and he (Mick). sounds exactly the same! As others have likely said.. Mick wrote this song when he was just 17 yrs old.
Talk about holding the mic out to the crowd, In the video of Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now (Symphonica In Rosso) Mick Hucknall walks out, the orchestra begins the song...Hucknall just says "Sing it now" The audience sings the first few lined of the song. It gave me goosies.
The video for this song is filmed in Whitby in North Yorkshire in northern England. Beautiful seaside town with stunning old ruins and fantastic fish and chips. Been there many times. Original song by Simply Red, not a cover. Teacher played by a beautiful British actress called Maggie O’Neill
Great great reaction but you're 100% correct you need to check out a live verson so I have two options for you:- Mick grew up around the corner from me in Denton, Manchester, UK. He wrote this at 17 about the struggles he had with his mother abandoning him and his father when Mick was very very young, and then the clashes he had with his father when he was growing up on the poverty line. Live versions can be found when Mick was in his beloved home Town (Manchester) playing at the "Theatre of Dreams" which is Manchester United's football team's stadium. Mick was an avid "RED" "Simply Red" !!! (the term of endearment to Manchester United) and had been watching them from a young age. He even had a 100% clear Ruby embedded in one of his front teeth, but replaced this with a Diamond at the beginning of the Millenium. The name also signifies his red hair which he was never ever embarrassed about, despite many at the beginning of his career to get rid of and die it. Anyway in 1996 Sir Alex Ferguson the infamous Manager of Man United introduced him at Old Trafford where he did a sell out concert. All his hits are in this concert but if you want to hear just an acoustic version of this song with just Heitor Pereira (a well known composer, musician and songwriter - he played with Simply Red for years and years) and Mick singing this song LIVE it is from about 41 minutes in or there is another version (again with Heitor) at the Montreux Festival back in the day. Apparently Heitor and Mick wrote the song together. They're both on RUclips but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do.
Used to play vhs, of his music videos constantly, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Annie Lennox, George Michael, Queen also did top videos as like, little movies, imo.
“The group's frontman Mick Hucknall wrote the song when he was 17, while living at his father's house. In a 2018 interview, Hucknall said the song was inspired by a member of the teaching staff at Manchester School of Art, where Hucknall was a fine-art student: the lecturer suggested the greatest paintings are produced when the artist is working in a stream of consciousness, which Hucknall then tried to apply to songwriting - "Holding Back the Years" was the second song he wrote using this method.” Wikipedia
If Video's take your attention away from the song, just listen to the audio the way music was always meant to be heard before video...... just listening lets everyone use their own imagination!
I am sure you'd appreciate this guy LIVE! He is the ultimate performer live. PLEASE check out at least one live performance, I personally would recommend the opening of a concert Simply Red, Live at OLD TRAFFORD, in the UK. It shows his and the entire bands talent.
frontman Mick Hucknall wrote this song, while his former Frantic Elevators bandmate Neil Moss also has a songwriting credit. Mick first started writing it when he was just 17 while living at his father's house, but it took several more years before he added the famous chorus.
New subscriber. I just found you guys and love truthful comments. He covered an Aretha Franklin song called Angel and he had the Fugees appear on it and it was on the soundtrack of Set It Off..He also appeared with them on the American Music Awards. I don`t know if that`s the one you are thinking of or not🙂
Mick named the group simply red from his love of Manchester United who wears a red football (soccer) kit, and he’s from Manchester and a regular at old Trafford the home of Manchester United
