This song is a perfect example as to why the '80s were so connected by music. There were no barriers, there were no categories you HAD to fall into, there were no walls to hold you in. If you had the guts to do what you wanted, you were 100% free to do it.

Hucknall, born at Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, on 8 June 1960 was an only child. His mother abandoned the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years", which would become one of Simply Red's biggest and best-known hits. He was brought up in Denton[7] by his father, Reginald (1935-2009) a barber in Stockport.According to Hucknall he had a happy childhood until the age of 10, when he began to clash with his father "because there was no woman to act as referee"

Soul comes from the heart, the gut, not the color of the skin. I'm sure you know the term 'blue-eyed soul.'
Sure, it might be easy for a singer to really project an emotion or mood while going through hard times because they're feeling it at the moment. But to be able to pull that soul up months or years later, or night after night, that's the drive, the dedication, the professionalism all feeding the soul. This is an amazing performance.

I thought no one could sing this like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes - then I heard Mick Hucknall. This man is insane good.

I love that you go in blind. A lot of the music you are reacting to it the way we all reacted to it when we first heard it. We didn’t have the internet to go find the history of it. We just fell in love with a lot of these songs because it spoke to us and said what we couldn’t always say ourselves. Or it just made us feel.

I adored him and used to play his songs at night and fall asleep listening to Simply Red.

This song is just so SMOOTH…like silk and velvet… This was a very popular choice for slow dancing. They’re simply great.

    Whaaaaaat WHAT!!!!
Soul is from the heart, and this band had it. I remember me and my brother would play songs on our cd player and turn the TV Volume down and put on a channel and just pretend the lyrics from the song were going with the images on the tv, like a music video and the results usually were hysterical, especially when the tv show/movie that was on had a bunch of dialogue.
We once played this song over the John Carpenter movie with Roddy Piper, They Live. Oh how we laughed

I totally agree with you 99% of the time. I cannot stand for a reactor to have pre listened. I love music. And I enjoy the reaction of especially a younger generation. It let's me know why I live in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and some 90s grunge. Keep up the good work. Would love to visit with you. I am almost 61 years old. I could tell you some things. Peace

I have always loved the message of this song. Either you can trust your lover or you can't. If you can't & if you can't, move on.

I saw them live in the late 80’s early 90’s…. OMG they were FANBLOODYTASTIC!!!! That ginger ninja was like a pocket rocket, like an eveready battery bunny jumping, singing and moving all over the stage. 3 hours later he was still moving, singing and dancing. He is a true performer and such an engaging entertainer. His voice is totally amazing on a soul level.
