I know the 1970s were something for another generation I wasn't in. But being born in 1971, the 80s sure were the best: good music, good movies/series (Back to the Future, Top Gun, Miami Vice and so many others).
Always looking back at this time - 2020s are a sore!

Karen Carpenter, played drums AND sang until Richard forced her out front. ( Carpenters)
Mikey Dolenz - The Monkees , took lessons to learn to play drums AFTER he got the role. So, he didnt know that it's very difficult. Ignorance is bliss, yah?
Don Henley- the Eagles- no further comment needed😮

He was originally just the drummer way back when the band Genesis first started out. At that time Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. When Peter left the band to pursue a solo career, the band started auditioning for a new lead singer. In the meantime, the plan was for Phil to temporarily take over the lead singing duties. Turned out they never hired a replacement lead singer, and it was Phil ever since. This particular song came from one of Phil's solo albums.

Not really. Much like dancing and singing, or playing piano or guitar.
Simply another motion added to what you are already doing.
Playing any instrument while singing is equally challenging.
I actually find backup and harmony singing tougher than the lead. Playing stuff off and complimentary to the lead. Interjected part lyrics often instead of the whole logical line.

Phil Collins was the drummer for the iconic rock band Genesis. Genesis, known for selling over 100 million records, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Phil Collins not only played the drums but also took over the role of lead singer after the departure of Peter Gabriel. His distinctive drumming style and soulful vocals left an indelible mark on the music world.

Its wild that a lot of people still don't know Phil is a drummer but he honestly is known mostly for his singing to mainstream audiences not deep into the stuff he has been involved with over the years. The big 80's gated snare huge drum room sound? Phil Collins and the boys literally invented it because Peter Gabriel forced him to play without using cymbals of any kind so they had to fill the drum mix with something. Dude pioneered a whole ass decade defining production technique that is still used to this day and one of the core components of the sound of the 1980's

Every aspect of this performance is perfect. The timing, the lighting effects, the camera work, his voice and his drumming all blend together perfectly in the best performance I have ever seen by any artist. And I’m 77 and have a lot to compare him to.

That is what 50 plus years of professional live musical performance experience looks like. Phil has been star of the show for a LONG time.

Life goes full circle, if you live long enough, as I saw Phil and his original Group: GENESIS play their first ever Top Of The Bill performance with 3,000 others in Croydon, South East London,England in 1972 and now 52 years have passed since...

The first time I saw it I was stressed he wasn’t going to make it to the drum kit in time because he was so nonchalant about it lol! So glad you got to experience it. Great reaction!

You just watched the performance of a lifetime. My favorite Collins song. He wears loose stuff because its cool and loose. They wear battery packs.

Didn’t he have a stroke several years ago?

TWO years ago in March. He has devastating nerve damage that makes it impossible to play drums, let alone hold the sticks, and neck surgery was no cure. He has to walk with a stick.
