Paul Simon wrote these iconic lyrics and he and Art Garfunkel released it in 1964. It was meant as a protest against society’s disconnect from human interaction in favor of technology. The message holds even more true today in my opinion. We ‘talk’ without speaking…I.e. text; we hear without listening…we don’t converse, we simply jabber at each other without pausing to understand. The lyrics are pure, timeless poetry. Disturbed stepped completely outside their comfort zone and gave us a raw, emotional interpretation of a classic. The frustration, anger, sadness, and eventual hope (represented by the boat crossing the gulf and the sunrise) that people can reconnect and rebuild. If the original was a warning, Disturbed has handed us a wake up call. This will always be one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite groups.

@@6Haunted-Days it actually was on some level. It was harking to the fact that television was taking over the American home dynamic. This was because tv screens emitted the same sort of glow as neon signs (the neon God THEY made), plus, at that time in US culture, neon signs were on the rise for advertising and consumer culture and were everywhere.
The opening line, "Hello darkness, my old friend," came from Simon's time as a boy when he would sing in the bathroom with the lights out.
Paul Simon has also said about the original that it means what it means to you, and, that all interpretations of the song are deeply personal to the interpreter.

Paul Simon was reported to have stated that Disturbed "Have made Sounds of silence their own', as you guys said. On the live version, David Draiman the lead singer was as sick as a dog and that is why he sang seated. He had to be helped off the stage in the end, his illness gave the song an added dimension. When Disturbed was touring with Alter Bridge, David Draiman (Disturbed) and Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge) performed The Sound of Silence as a duet. It is amazing.

David's voice is amazing. I could listen to him read the phone book. I recently saw them in concert and this song gave me goose bumps. He had given a tribute fallen colleagues right before they preformed it. It was so touching.

Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like a rollercoaster ride, slowly brings you to the top, then crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction guys!!

I was hoping for a comment on the video itself. Oh, well. Glad to know we have some Disturbed fans here. Definitely watch the Conan appearance, it's great. Another live version is when David Draiman (Paul Simon) brings on Myles Kennedy (Art Garfunkel) and they sing harmony. Powerful. If Myles is not on your radar he should be. This duet would be a good segue. 🤘 Great reaction, guys. Looking forward to more Disturbed between the two of you.

Allot of people dont know that David was classically vocally trained. His control, and vibrato are absofuqinlootly amazeballs. I have seen them twice live, once when they were just starting out at OzzFest. That was pre 2000 and their debut album the Sickness! I saw them on the side stage and told my sister that they were going to be amazing! Saw them this summer with Breaking Benjamin and Jinjer....what an amazing concert that was!

Nice, that's me and Ozzy!! He used to do a thing called Ozzfest at a local outdoor venue and it was amazing. Would be him either with or without the OG members Black Sabbath and like 15 to 20 other bands! We went every year from 97 to 2008 when Ozzy stopped touring. Go look up that lineup, man I got to see SOOO many bands, many before they hit it big! @@juliehackett1025

David’s parents Jewish parents sent him to orthodox schools for him to train to become a Rabbi. Although he doesn’t practice his faith, he is a trained Cantor. He is a well trained vocalist and knows how to protect his voice. When Disturbed was on that late night show, David was sick with a fever so he wasn’t 100% so it’s a good thing that y’all watched the video from Disturbed.

I guess after the live performance the he did on SNL, I think, Paul Simon actually tweeted his admiration for his effort...really cool...(OK, it was Conan and the message was on Facebook)“In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of The Sound of Silence on Conan this week. The S&G cover also appears on Disturbed’s latest album, Immortalized.”

The sound you’re talking about with him and Chester is synonymous with this genre, then breaking Benjamin Chevelle, that genre used a vocal fry.. it’s not a “scream” that you hear in metal per se, they can do that too, but that sound of grit when still singing clean notes is vocal frying and it’s really hard to do and sound good but they do it really well.. two of the best that you named!!

He brought the meaning out, he emphasized with great care the meaning. Every time I hear David sing The Sound of Silence, it makes my hair raise. Fantastic version for sure.
