I have a friend who just happened to be in that audience that night. He said that people who were backstage came out to see who was singing. The audience gave the band a 10 minute standing ovation. I believe this performance is one of the top 10 live tv performances of all time. It’s almost unworldly.

That's a great story. I ran across it several days later on the internet. I had never heard anything by Disturbed before, and then I watched that video probably 50 times and showed it to everyone I knew.

    • @Qmocean
      @Qmocean 9 месяцев назад +18

The "sick" myth is a lil overblown. He wasn't sick and had no fever. He essentially had a vocal cord injury that required surgery in the end. He had been putting it off because he was afraid the surgery would ruin his singing voice (a legit possibility), but not long after this performance he gave in.

David Draiman is classically trained, and in his younger years, he was classically trained as a cantor, who is someone that sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue. But after being expelled from three different yeshivas and blowing up his high school rabbi's van, Draiman wasn't cut out for the seminary, and the rest is heavy metal history 😎

@dalehammers4425 No doubt. That is one thing I loved about the Conan show. He was not afraid to feature music guests that other late night programs passed on. I'm not sure why but I missed this episode. Conan is just not the same now without Max Weinberg and the original studio band. Anyway 😮. Yes this arrangement with the different piano has a much bigger haunting sound to it. I'm glad I found this.

When Disturbed was on that late night show, David was sick with a fever so he wasn’t 100%.
David’s parents Jewish parents sent him to orthodox schools for him to train to become a Rabbi. Although he doesn’t practice his faith, he is a trained Cantor. He is a well trained vocalist and knows how to protect his voice.

That he performed this beautifully while seated and sick to boot speaks volumes about his training and ability. Being seated always diminishes a part of the breath control, in some singers more than others . I was a rock singer in my youth, and I found it more difficult to sing well while seated. I believe Disturbed was awarded a Grammy for this live performance. Such artistry!

This live version of the song by Disturbed is my favorite of all other versions. Including Disturbed's music video and the original song from back in the day. Obviously, that had to exist for this to exist, so obvious mad props given to the writer or writers of the song. This live version is just so very powerful to me with the orchestra in the back, and honestly, I think the fact that he was sick and losing his voice actually contributed to the growliness of his voice at some points which I think made it sound even better than the music video.

He was high when he recorded the song. The day he recorded the song he didn't think he was going to do any vocals that day so he had indulged in the thing he does. It took about 3 hours for him to record this song because they didn't know how they wanted to do this song. The only instrument that was already recorded was the piano. He cried when he heard the finished song for the first time. He hadn't heard himself sing in that tone since he was a teenager.
David is a trained Canter. He did the training as a teenager.

This is much better then the record, or at least the video, the music isn't drowning out the vocals.

    What reputation?
Don't know that you have much of a reputation to put on the line... But it's safe because the live version is 100% better

If you want an artist that consistently is better live. React to Dave Mathew’s Band Live.

I just watched an interview with David and he actually had a bleeding lesion on his vocal cord. Which in my opinion is hella more impressive than if he had the flu. Don’t know where the rumor started that he was sick, maybe from them.

That is the level of a properly trained vocalist. He is classically trained as both a singer and a cantor. You cannot beat that!. Autotune is the bane of the music industry. It allows mediocre voices to sound good.

I'm absolutely nuts over this performance!!! Brought tears to my eyes, even though I've watched it a hundred times. Guess it's been awhile😊 I like the live better as well.
Really appreciate your reaction to this💜

I've seen Disturbed live lots of times, they put on an amazing show. David has trained his voice, I don't remember how far his voice training went. I feel the big difference between your basic bands and great bands is amount of training and practice.

He is a trained Jewish cantor. That is why his voice is so clear, loud, resonating, and perfect! I can't believe how excellent he sounds having the flu as bad as he did. Bravo! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Lots of people out there think that metal singers are not talented, in fact they are typically more talented that the run of the mill artist

This song, written by Paul Simon, started out as a folk song that went nowhere. Paul Simon was in England trying to make a career for himself when the record company took the recording, upped the tempo and added the backing band. It became a major hit and Simon and Garfunkel became big stars. But at 72 years old, I love this version. It has so much more character and feeling than the original. Thanks. Nice job, BTW.

I've heard you say you are spiritual. There is a Christian band called ApologetiX that does biblical parodies of popular songs. Their take on this one is called Sounds of Sirens. I highly recommend them.
