- Habibati! We're back with another music reaction, and this time it's Disturbed with their live rendition of 'The Sound of Silence' by Simon & Garfunkel.
What a great musical arrangement and performance. David Dreamypants really put on a vocal masterclass with this.
I hope you guys enjoy this video, and keep those recommendations coming!

Imagine going to conan show not knowing you'd see one of the greatest covers ever done by anyone.
One thing Conan’s show has always brought to the table... mind blowing musical performances 👌
No kidding. Wish I had seen it live sitting in that audience!
That would’ve been amazeballs
It's just like going to the Conan show and not knowing you are going to see Slipknot performing people=shit
This song is terrible.
He said it blew him away to see grown men cry when he performed this live. The emotion he conveys through his vocals can definitely do that, for sure.
John: Im 42 and I cry hard. Why? Because we all tend to judge forgetting its Gods work and choice. These lyrics fit perfect to Us who think we should demand respect from God and we feed God with sins🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧
everytime I hear this version
I cry every time
The original version was sad because they saw what was coming but still hopeful that humanity could change. Disturbed was sad, frustrated and mad that humanity has ignored that warning.
Yeah, I read somewhere else that what Simon and Garfunkel had written was a warning: David Draiman sang what happens when the warning was ignored.
Wow! Very poignant comment, Jody. 👏
@@robertholte2716 Exactly
@@robertholte2716 yeah I've read this same exact comment about a thousand times lol
Nailed it. That's the exact vibes I get from both versions.
I've heard this version of The Sound of Silence over and over and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes
Makes me tearful too
Same here, amd goosebumps.
This song is timeless... a CLASSIC but his rendition is so powerful, profound and poignant all at the same time!!! All I can say is EPIC!!!
Timeless it is... I felt the vibes of this song in the sixties and now, after half a century, feel it again listening to this rendition by Disturbed. It somehow makes me timeless too :)
Sadly there will be another version. Probably long after we are dust and it will be much darker and much sadder. We can still avoid what it predicts but I doubt we will wake up and listen. I fear we are doomed to the sound of silence. Honestly though the fact that I am commenting on an "Arab Man's" RUclips channel gives me hope. No slight or slur intended.
Sha: It really touches our soul.I cry everytime I get to listen to it unlike most who only hears it.
@@jeanmarienadal7268 me too.. this song just touches your very being... it definitely gives me goosebumps and chills everytime I hear it ...
Its amazing how taste differs so much between people because I wholeheartedly think this version is terrible.
Best cover ever. Disturbed brings the true message of the song to the forefront. The sadness, anger and frustration of the lyrics ring true in David’s performance. Gets me every time.
I like Simon and Garfunkel, but they really made it better, it's rarely done.
Kristi Marriner You said it well Kristi
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is still the best cover ever for me. This one is right up there for me though.
DarkenSeyreth “Hurt” is second. So painful to hear or watch 😞
Disturbed modernized it brought to the current times we are living in.
I just LOVE this version of the song.
The original was ok, but I never paid attention to the message.
Disturbed and David Draiman, DEMANDS me to LISTEN to the message. They taken it to a different level.
And the lyrics are even more on point today than 50+ yrs ago. ;)
The original is waycbetter than okay, some of the best harmonies and haunting focals ever put to music
David Draiman was actually sick when this was recorded.
Quite possibly the best rendition of the song. It carries so much weight in what is happening in the world today. Much more so than when it was originally released.
When you only focus on David, you can also hear it. It's really not much, he just usually has even more control. But luckily he's so well trained in his craft, that unless you really pick it apart, you can't really hear it. And maybe it also gave this particular performance just that tad more tenderness. Imperfections can be perfection - so to speak ;-).
Henk Poort may well have outdone him...
No, it's the same old sh@t
Covid-19 anthem.
@@LuiWallentinGttler The only thing you can hear is a stuffy nose, the poor sweetheart. He did an incredible job, I agree that nobody would know.
I listened to S&G sing this song in the sixties and loved it... I’d sing along... I’m sure I’ve heard a hundred times before Disturbed covered it. I can honestly say that I never heard (I mean really HEARD) that song, or felt it, or understood it until I heard David Draiman sing it. As much as I love S&G and their music, David Draiman made that song real! Thank you for your reaction of this! 😊
I still four years later am amazed with his vocal up, and down control.
I believe the big deference is in the 70's the song was sang like your mother was warning you, now. Its like your father is telling you with the glare(that he's right and you better listen) like OPEN YOUR EYES AND LOOK WHAT IS HAPPENING.
I love this take. You’re totally right.
There’s a reason that there are Hundreds of Millions of views. Rarely is the Cover a wonderful interpretation of the original. Disturbed owned the arrangement and performance. Best Cover Ever.
Altering my ‘Will’ to have this played at my funeral.
Me too This song is incredible
I played Neilson Without You at my mums funeral ! it ummm left everyone in tears
Paul Simon (the songs writer) liked Davids version also. He sent him an email to tell him so. The band was so honored they posted it on their web page.
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance. Good job! Try "The Night" by Disturbed too.
David Draiman was trained as a hazzan. Like Floor Jansen, that early training has given him immense control over his voice.
I love the look not just on your face but the expressions in your eyes while watching.
Arab man this girl nails it.
Take a listen.

So I have been watching a number of reactions to this live performance by Disturbed to find the nuances of those best reactions that are really appreciating what they are hearing “within” this performance, not just reacting because it’s popular and will bring the clicks and views. You my friend hit the top of the appreciation ladder for sure. There is a captivating that needs to be fresh when one hears this performance for what it truly is; probably one of the most spectacular music/vocal/message performances ever recorded.
I am INCREDIBLY critical when I feel there is greatness in a performance and choose to dive into the gritty detail to pick what I feel is in this list I hold as “The greatest vocal performances. As an example, Pavarotti singing Nessun dorma from Puccini’s Turandot in his 1994 performance in Los Angeles was absolutely flawless and at the ending of the vocal, Pavarotti hit that closing climax more exacting than any time I had ever heard it which is the signature emotional hook of that piece. The combination of every musical and emotional element was absolutely brilliant and it was clear in the close up of his face that Pavarotti himself knew he had just achieved absolute musical perfection. Another is Whitney Houston absolutely cementing the legacy as the greatest rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl in 1991. Her account of what emotional rush went through her body when she felt the collective wash of pride at that exact moment when the music crashed its start was an amazingly telling timeline as to how that sort of brilliance can push out of someone with such otherworldly musical talent and capabilities. I am a drummer, a musician. I have an incredibly critical ear like many folks who love the unvarnished perfection in live performances and can absolutely capture every detail. David Draiman and the ensemble gathered for the Conan performance here created what in my opinion is one of the overall greatest live performances ever witnessed using the brilliant poetry from Simon and Garfunkel. The original is excellent. But in this version, Draiman paints every verse with a definitive vocal color so exacting to the lyrics with haunting precision. The supporting instrumental backdrop literally could not have risen to a more exacting emotional canvas to accompany where Draiman went in every measure. You my friend heard all of that in detail and I can tell.
Very similar to the silence at the close of a spectacular performance where the witnessing audience needs a second or two to come out of the dream state trans they were just thrust into, the reactions where there is a few seconds to gather thought at what was just witnessed are the reactions that speak the most truth. Your appreciation and empathetic envy is obvious and that right there is what gives you the top reaction spot for me. You saw it right from the start and really got it. Excellent. Thank you for an honest reaction. 👍🏻😎👍🏻
Holy wow Scott. I don't know what to say. Thank you so much for this. I don't understand why you don't do this professionally, you should be a critic, you should have a blog/vlog out talking about this. I know I would read every article and watch video you put out. Please consider it, i'd really genuinely enjoy getting your perspective on "The Greatest Vocal Performances". Thank you for putting a smile on my face and for making me feel this good. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment
@ScottKennedy
It's called the 'Perfect Silence'...that span of time when the voice stops, and the audience is so spellbound, you could literally hear a pin drop. Every singer yearns to hear that just once in their lifetime. You definitely hear that at the end of this song.
Well Arab Man, I truly appreciate the accolades. Seriously. I have genuinely considered doing this sort of thing and now that I can see that there is a pretty sizable thirst for, I guess one would call it “affirmation”, knowing others see and hear these types of things the same way you do. I’ve simply had this passion for the finite detail and nuances that many don’t realize are the differences between performances where one makes you appreciate some very good musicians, while the next makes you not understand why you’re crying. I know exactly why particular pieces draw tears from certain folks when they actually don’t truly comprehend the lyrics of a song. Specific dynamics in a musical piece can absolutely do this in the most unsuspecting ways and it’s fascinating to me how unpredictable it can be very much depending on how one is actually listening to the dynamics of the piece. It’s very cool stuff!!
So in the midst of all the other things I do (the big one being the development of a tech method for GPS systems I have acquired a patent for that is absolutely revolutionary but will need some huge funding to fully realize), once I find myself a clear opening to do it right, I think I am going to take that suggestion. I thank you for the added push my friend!! Undoubtedly you will get some credit for that, lol. I have had some interesting comments regarding my detailed analysis and when I thought I was simply talking too much, lol, others truly appreciated that someone was able to take the simple “Wow” and put it into words.
When I have the time, I’m going to do it!!
👍🏻😎👍🏻
De Co, you are absolutely correct. That “Perfect Silence” and the sort of jaw dropping emotional connection brought on by the emotional tension and the feelings of irresolution of an emotional description presented with absolute clarity is perfectly presented in Brian Crumbs performance of “Creep” on America’s Got Talent. He did an AMAZING rendition of that song to the point it visibly made Howie Mandell literally uncomfortable in his chair. Even Simon Cowell described the presentation as breathtaking and he was absolutely right. If you haven’t seen that, it is well worth a watch. It’s stunning.
@@Far2hip that was my first thought as to the "Perfect Silence!" I am 81 years old and I think that was the first time I was aware of the amazing silence when Brian Justin Crum finished his performance. Breathtaking!!
Good and intelligent review, dude. How can anyone not be moved by that voice singing that particular song. Keep up the great work!
One of the best live performances I have seen in modern times either live or on youtube! AMAZING!!!!
You MUST watch their video. There is so much symbolism, layers of messages, in the video. It’s an absolute classic.
Yes, this one part, it gives me goosebumps all over, every time!
WitchyWomyn I agree the video is must see.
Agreed. The video they did really punches you in the gut.
Was genuinely blown away after seeing the video for the first time.
A B S O L U T E L Y
I’m born in 1965 and brought up listening to the original and yes I got this feeling from the song. But Disturbed just neatly pulls you in and ends up just slapping you awake. In today’s world we are the silence. To bring change let your voice be heard. Hell no Silence
I couldn't have said it better myself. Born 1965 brought up listening to Simon and Garfunkel .But Never have I ever heard a song sung better than the original Artist ,truly breathtaking.
You should react to the official music video by disturbed of the “sound of silence”. It is also excellent!
I still marvel at the way the audience was dead silent when the last note played, then they exploded. Incredible.
I remember when I first heard this version. It made me cry like a baby. The soft, almost shy warning the original song was about the dangers of the modern world was turned into an anguished, angry accusation by Mr Draiman. Powerful and oh so true.
I listen to this Cover frequently. It's just got so many levels to it. I am glad that you enjoyed it Arab Man! It makes me feel uplifted.
Your reaction is intelligent and articulate. Great reaction! Glad I found your channel!
Yey!
David was classically trained as a cantor who is someone who sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue. His "vocal fries" are kept moist and not dry to preserve his vocal chords, and he can growl with the best of them without damage. Compare this to "Down With The Sickness."
That night live on Conan he was sick with the flu and still sang perfectly
Love your comment about comparing the two versions of this song. I grew up with the original and thought it was great. Now I’m listening to this version and love the power and intensity that David puts into it. I don’t care which one is playing I stop and turn it up till the end.
I always felt this version of this song starts of sad and hopeless, then as the song cersendo, the story line is more frustration and anger, then ends with a resigned hope. It reflects the times we are currently in.
I agree with you that this is the same song but not.
Great review. 😊
Yey! 🙏🏻💚❤️
Don’t forget, Garfunkel reacted too and this rendition wins them all!!💕
THE BEST COVER EVER!!!! goosebumps every time
Wherever he’s singing you could hear nothing but the beauty of this track 👌
Listening to the original vs this version it sounds to me like the original conveys a warning to future generations while this version conveys the rage that the warning was not heeded.
Original comment. /s
Love the name btw
Disturbeds album Evolution came out in 2018 and has another song with David’s softer voice Hold on to Memories is amazing. Give it a listen.
Whats even more incredible is that he was sick with the flu and had a fever when he performed this song.
love this mans voice ,liked the song before but love it now .Just amazing ...goosebumps
Watch their original video of this song, it is even MORE powerful!!! The visual really makes a difference!
David is a classically trained singer. His highs are off the charts and with that rasp wow
He’d had throat surgery and was still recuperating . Watch their official video. It will blow your mind. This version actually makes you hear the words. It’s a warning.
AND HE WAS STILL RECOVERING FROM ILLNESS ....VERY SPECIAL 👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏👊👊👊❤🌹🏴
I was at the 1976 performance of Simon & Garfunkel‘s version of the song. What makes this young man’s vocal abilities beyond exceptional is, during this life performance he was suffering from a very bad head cold!
Awesome choice! May I suggest doing the late and great Chester Bennington from Linkin Park's cover of Adelle's 'Rolling in The Deep' Live next? Loving these reactions.
His name is David Drainman. I've always loved that song.
David is a classically trained Jewish Cantor. He was also very sick during this performance
I might be ONLY 74 yrs old, but I STILL think you da best! Vision, clarity AND emotion come together for an always passionate review!
I could listen to this forever.
David was sick the day he performed on Conan's show. It shows how great a singer and entetainer he is. Incredible!
I heard he was really sick during this performance, and he still gave my soul chills.
Thanks for "covering" this song. It is amazing!!
David's voice is so low and beautiful the passion and emotion grabs you by the throat
Simon and Garfunkel was a warning. This is a cry of why didn't you listen
Davids Voice Slays Always
Not bad for a bald-headed Jewish guy🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Hahahaha
let's just ignore the antisemitic part but yeah this is true, having long hair automatically makes your singing better 😤😤😤
If you mean David, he's catholic, not Jewish.
@@publicguy1664 He is Jewish by race.
@@publicguy1664 lol. he's as Jewish as it gets.
Agreed two "different," but equally beautiful songs.
He was pretty sick that evening and still made us feel a certain way.......Stunning!!!!
Loved your take on Disturbed’s Sound of Silence!!! His raw emotions were really played on with this song. My favorite rendition ever!!! I’ll be listening to you again!!! 😊
...I will be 62 in Aug. I have been listening to this song since my early teens...until Disturbed cover...I had Never really Heard the Words...It was never as PROPHETIC as it is Now...I could loop this All Day
Sorry, I'm rewatching your reaction, and still appreciating the awe with which you're listening ... !!!
He was also sick during this performance. Amazing.
What a great range of his voice
Great reaction, exactly on point. The original was a warning now ignored ignored, this was a four alarm disaster alert announcing the last chance to get out. Thank you stay well.
In 1963 Paul(like the apostle) warned us; now David(like the king) is screaming we have Arrived... Clever. We are now living in the sound of silence. Neon light was television... And so prophetic like the visions of David
David Draiman You are incredible!!!! We love you so much!!!! My voice is a joy, as this song should have been played this way 30 or 40 years ago!! Thank You!! David!!!!
🙂🙂
you have to watch the song with the video!!!!! The video is the best!!!!!!!
The actual video of the group singing this is potent
You MUST watch the original video... this performance is great, but his original performance in the video is even better. It's even more powerful and emotional.
I heard this quite a few years ago, at the time I thought that there was no way that He was going to get it right or make it sound good. Oh man was I mistaken, happily mistaken...... This is the best version of the song I've ever heard. it's BRILLIANT.............
You hit it! Our generation learned from songs like this.
So beautiful
Nice! The official video is also impressive & don't miss Henk Poort's cover of this!!!
Simon and Garfunkel actually really liked this cover. What a wonderful cover. So well done.
EPIC.and HE was sick and thought this was not his best..what was his best..all of us melting into nothing..His control from rasp to calm..he is on a whole other level...he is the best prove me wrong..LIVE AND SICK
You should listen to the official version he sings, because he had flu whilst on the Conan show. His voice is even better , if possible, David is an amazing performer.I
love him!
Paul Simon said he loved it but now its disturbed song, they were able to get the message across to soooooo many.. I have the highest respect for David and his band..I have never loved a song as much as I do this one.. it touched our souls
Fun fact, he was ill with the flu when he preformed this
Best part about this song, is the song writing and arrangement is so good it vanishes. That allows the vocals to shine
I really don’t know how you came up on my feed, but ya did. I’m all for giving new young people the chance to react to music. First, there is no bad music. For all, it’s just a matter of personal taste. I was around when Simon and Garfunkel’s version came out. The 60’s was a decade of Rock, Pop, and Folk music. Simon and Garfunkel definitely fit in with Folk music. It was just a way to tell an entire story in one song. Folk music was a way that artists or musicians could make their views, political or not, known to the world. One cannot do a cover of a legendary song, by legendary artists, unless you can do the song justice. David Draiman, and the rest of Disturbed, really did Simon and Garfunkel justice. Only the greats can do justice to the greats. Simon and Garfunkel themselves are huge fans of Disturbed’s rendition. David is classically trained, and in this particular song, you can hear the absolute greatness of his voice. For those that say this was better than the original were probably not even born when it came out. It’s one of the most iconic, legendary songs of all time. Disturbed gave a legendary song new life and did a damn good job of it. I love both renditions, for different reasons. For the younger generation, and even people of my own (which really drives me nuts cuz they should know, but don’t), this song was Simon and Garfunkel’s protest of the Vietnam War. As I said, Folk music was all about the story.
I showed this to my wife, raised in the Hong Kong style absorbing of culture. She made one point, while she loved Disturbed version, she felt that the original's slow and downplayed exit was more powerful. I came around to her ideas, as the continued power chords did indeed obscure the message by the end. Both versions are powerful in their own way.
@@Angotha I'm not an ancient. Pushing 40 this year. Fought in protests in Hong Kong, and supporting those back home in the states. Don't let your prejudices, cloud your reactions. The reason the original is more powerful is because it speaks slowly and softly. The words and the reasons need digestion. Disturbs' version is more powerful on a musical level, but the original leaves a longer lasting impression.
Angotha why so angry?? Why did you attack David for his views? RUclips is a forum for everyones opinions, not just your own. To call someone ancient is so disrespectful. Your parents did a lovely job raising you. You really shouldn’t even have an opinion on this because you can’t understand the totality of the words of this song, and what it truly means like we “ancients”. We can all see, by your snotty attack, that you’re still a baby 👶 in diapers for and have a lot of growing to do. But remember my dear, life goes by in a flash, and you too will be ancient before you know it. In the meantime, suck on your “baba” tonight and try to grow up a little before you make asinine remarks on something you know nothing about.
@@lovetocheerx0x0 Yeah. I wasn't expecting that reaction. I am not sure if some people get the irony of responding to people who hate people who are different by automatically distrusting people who are different or older. It's kind of a sad commentary on where we are. We have gotten more tribal.. because... the internet... allowed us to reach out further??? On a side note, as she brought up ancients and how they can't understand the feelings, they should check out 2RG or 2 rocking grannies. Lovely channel. As for me, I am older yes, and my playlist is still mainly comprised of Rise Against, MCR, SoaD, The Decemberists, Atreyu, Bad Religion and Bullet for my Valentine. (I'm a little behind the times musically as an expat for nearly 2 decades.) Older doesn't mean we don't understand or connect, it is just that experiences have taught us to look at things from many different angles (unless we are of the type who sadly never grew). A little more understanding would not hurt anyone. Anyway, thanks for responding and have a great day.
@@Angotha Will do, thanks. And you have a particularly delightful day. Byeonshin.
This is him on a bad day, he had influenza for this Conan performance. If you're up for it, listen to the band's official video - it's intense
They won a Grammy for this performance. ❤
Raychele-They were nominated for a Grammy and lost.
No....nominated. But didn’t win
whar a good reaction you said it perfect the same song but a new song
I put this cover and Johnny Cash covering Hurt, as two of the best covers I’ve ever heard
An immortal demon with an angelic voice
I’ve watched a lot of vocal coaches and musicians watch this rendition and I just love the facial expressions
His voice commands attention
I applauded the first time I heard this too. Paul Simon said he was moved to tears the first time he heard this cover.
-I watched so many reactors speaking about this song. You are by far my favorite. You respect the singer. (subscribed)
-Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan.
-David: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."
It touches your SOUL everytime.
Just to say how powerful this cover was, Disturbed was the first and only time Paul Simon shared a cover of this song on his facebook
I was one of the people that cried when I heard it . I knew the original song but this one has sooo much heart n soul in it. It’s the first time I have ever cried listening to a song and I haven’t heard another song that did that since🤧
Appreciate that he understands that there are 2 songs here.
This version always makes me cry, so emotional.
I heard he was ill that night. The video they did of this is phenomenal!!!!
Paul Simon loved this much he posted it on his fb... David( the lead singer) used to sing as a cantor and his voice is classically trained... Songs like this are awesome... Not only because of their content... But because you. Can actually... UNDERSTAND... What the words are...
Finally!! Here is a knowledgeable singer reacting to another very skilled singer.
His cantor is why so many appricieate this version. Both deserve recognition. Enjoyed your reacation video as well. Peace, and Love to Music that connects us all. 🎶 ❤ 🎶
An excellent and well trained voice in pop is a rarity. In Rock it’s the norm.
Love your tongue in cheek intro. Made me laugh. Those are rare these days. I've always believed unless you can laugh at yourself you have no right to laugh at anyone else. Congratulations brother! Well done!
He's got a crispy, crunchy, tender, flaky voice.
Sounds like you are doing a food review. 😂
haha, nothing like deep fried chicken
@@kittykat8169 haha yesss listen I do love to cook :P
Every time I hear this song I am taken on an emotional journey like never before. This for me is better than the original , it awakens senses I didn't realise possible from a song or singer. Just a jaw dropping piece of perfection.
This is what Simon and Garfunkel wanted.... The 70's was not ready. They then re recorded it with a happier tune. ❤
