I remember I had a really nice stereo in my 77 MG. This song came on and the drum solo played separately around the 4 speakers. It gave chills and made the hair on my arms and the back of neck stand up. Every time I hear this song it takes me right back to that day like it was yesterday. My fave song of all time.
Phil always said " I'm not a singer that can play drums, I'm a drummer that can sing."..I think this is the song he wrote after divorcing his first wife..Sounds very suspicious n angry.... Greatest!!
Mate, it’s called creating an atmosphere, as the people at the concert all wait for this iconic song and its build up gets everyone extra excited….🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Exactly! It's part of the performance-- creating drama and anticipation, building suspense. We are now so conditioned to demand and receive instant gratification, we are unwilling to allow for a build-up...and missing a whole lot, like a lover who doesn't understand that the build-up can intensifie and prolong the pleasure...and can be fun! You said it yourself, when you were talking about the chills and excitement...the anticipation!
The reason he'd left the stage before the start of the song, was to have his head-mic and in-ear monitors fitted under his shirt. Hence the long, drawn out intro - to give him time. If you watch the rear catwalk as he's walking around the stage during the earlier part of the song, you'll notice that there are no drums on the catwalk. They came out of the floor when he was about 10 feet (3m) from them - just in time for that epic drum drop. Perfect timing. Finally, I take my hat off not only to the other musicians on stage, but the sound, and lighting, crews efforts that went into making this one of the best all-time live performances in musical history. Thanks for posting.
@@cazzychaps Actually, in this case it wasn't. According to interviews with PC I've seen, at THIS show it was played at about 60% through the show. The encore seems to have been 'Sussudio', in which he had his full percussion section, his backing singers, and his horn section on stage with him to accept the applause of the audience. In fact, I cannot remember him EVER using 'In The Air' as an encore. Yes, it's his most popular song, but the rest of the musicians would have felt 'cheated' to have not appeared onstage for the last song.
When Phil first came out with this song, i was in my teens, and we all know it was a badass song, but in my mid-50s, it's has an iconic awesome rhythm and brings back great memories from that time. Back then, there were so many bad ass bands with music that stood the test of time, and listening today, the music is better for more reasons than i can explain
Dude your reaction is priceless...Phil Collins is one of the greatest, also one of the greatest drummers around, i once saw him to a clip with a set of 26 drums set up he is amazing, he safly retired respectfully when he believed it was time...but he was/is a great artist and his music will never be firgotten. Thankyou for sharing this from a HUGE Phil Collins fan 😁👌
The build up is a part of the show and the vibe. This song was the very first mainstream song to find its way to TV courtesy of a lil show called Miami Vice
Heard this song at age 11 on the radio and remembered my friends and playing the air drums😂😂later as a college student, Phil Collin’s was featured on Miami Vice and the song was kinda reborn. Now, 43 years later, the song, the build up and that drum-line still has the same effect on me. I don’t know anyone male/female black or white who doesn’t feel something when the beat drops from those drums.
Phil released In The Air Tonight in 1981. This performance was 2004 in Paris. Just keeps getting better. Whether he's with Genesis or solo, he is a great singer, great drummer. Check out the duet he does with Chester Thompson at the same concert. You won't be disappointed.
9:11 Right here. The crowd starts to cheer. They have been waiting and waiting and waiting - and it’s about to DROP! I’ve watched several vocal coaches react to this and talk about how difficult it is to sing like he does while playing the drums like he does. Simply one of the best ever.

I LOVE watching people discover Phill Collins for the first time!! Phil was the drummer and a back-up vocalist in the early line-up of Genesis, when Peter Gabriel was their lead singer and primary lyricist. They were all in their teens and early 20s then. It's totally worth looking up some of those videos of their performances and tv guest appearances. Phill took over singing when Peter left. Eventually, the line-up was just Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks. In the 80s, Phill simultaneously recorded/toured with Genesis AND had a solo career AND also acted in a few tv shows and movies. AND he played drums on a few tracks on a few of Peter Gabriel's solo albums. He is one of the best percussionists to ever bang a drum. A real legend. PLEASE go down that rabbit hole and react to more of this amazing man's music. You won't be sorry.
Phil started is professional career with Genesis 1971 as a drummer, and at one point, he was considered one of the best drummers in the world, his career expands almost 50 years countless awards, gold albums. Hits after hits….listen to Genesis.. Dance on a volcano, jaw dropping!
There’s a certain texture to his voice that draws you in but the pull is really the emotion he is invoking for us to feel! The music accompanies rather than drowns out the vocalist!! This is a fantastic song!!!
Can you imagine how wide we were grinnng waiting for that drum beat to drop ?! 🤣🤣🤣... To see new people react for the first time..not knowing Phil was gong to hit the skins ?!...a thing of beauty... Phil Collins was the drummer with Genesis..who later went on to form Toto..when a singer quit and he became the lead singer... afterwards Phil went solo... an amazing performer..who today can't play the drums as the wear and tear have limited his talent..but is still revered around the world... Pick anything with his name attached..his music is varied depending who he's playing with or what decade it was created... Welcome aboard...🌿🌿🌿
This is a Great Megastar and it's a deep rabbit hole my friend, the reason why he was dressing during the build up is because it was in the middle of the concert... I have been to this concert in Athens, this here is in Paris. He has a tremendous solo career as well as with the band Genesis, you won't get disappointed.
I’m almost 70 and this song is on the ‘list’ of favorite, epic songs of my life. I enjoyed watching your reaction seeing this first time from the master himself. You don’t know what you’ve been missing from the ‘80’s. Thanks.

I saw him in NYC (Barclay Center), amazing night, he was performing from a chair, unforgettable night for me and my girls.
Never seen you before. I love watching the reactions of those who are experiencing music for the 1st time for one reason or aother. I'm not that old, but this song cameout when I was in high-school. Everyone would ride around, windows down & would play this song simultaneously, SO LOUD. It was like being at his concert. Phil Collins is a legend! ❤
Everyone's waiting for those drums
💯
And while he slowly walks across... "You won't make it in time! Hurry up!" 😂
He's making you wait for them on purpose of course.
the keyboard?
even if you aren't aware they're coming
I love when the younger generations appreciate the music that I grew up listening to. Even if it does make me feel old!✌️💙🙂
You aren’t old. You were just there the first time he played it. But I but I get it.
Greatest!!
Karen Carpenter felt the same way!
Phil Collins is a legendary icon. He was EVERYWHERE in the '80s
This song ALWAYS gives me the chills, especially when the drums kick in
Yassss!!❤
Patience is required!!
TikTok generation have zero patience 😢
Some things are worth the wait (especially that drum fill!) 😎
@@alanbeesby2220 😎 He got it in the end…that’s the main thing. It’s a new realm to him… I was impatient with my comment 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ 🇦🇺🐨🇦🇺
Not everyone it seems.😅
I can only wish I was a time traveller, I would definitely go back to watch this performance of the great Phil Collins.
This was usually done as am encore, thus the break
@@cazzychaps Actually, in this case it wasn't. According to interviews with PC I've seen, at THIS show it was played at about 60% through the show. The encore seems to have been 'Sussudio', in which he had his full percussion section, his backing singers, and his horn section on stage with him to accept the applause of the audience. In fact, I cannot remember him EVER using 'In The Air' as an encore. Yes, it's his most popular song, but the rest of the musicians would have felt 'cheated' to have not appeared onstage for the last song.
Thanks for the explanation. I saw him in Hartford in 1987 while attending UMass
Above his greatest hits..Miami Vice Soundtrack and Lion King are his works too
Phil Collins is an amazing drummer, singer, writer, etc. He wrote this and you couldn't go anywhere in the 80s without hearing it.
Omgosh this guy is cracking me up!! Phil Collins rocks❤❤❤
The build up is a part of the show and the vibe. This song was the very first mainstream song to find its way to TV courtesy of a lil show called Miami Vice
An absolutely perfect performance! Agree?
If you watched Miami Vice...you know this 😊
Gives me goosebumps thinking about that scene!
Almost like the good old days
I just said that!
@@Alltheredroses Gets me emotional every time.
Or perhaps if you've had a history of listening great music....
I went by your thumbnail I had to watch your reaction to this iconic song. This song brought back memories ❤️
9:11 Right here.
The crowd starts to cheer. They have been waiting and waiting and waiting - and it’s about to DROP!
I’ve watched several vocal coaches react to this and talk about how difficult it is to sing like he does while playing the drums like he does. Simply one of the best ever.
Cruising down the highway on a hot summer night, windows down, arm out listening to this with my friends..felt like everything was slow motion…good times!
This is the best reaction vid I've stumbled across! The expression on your face when Phil started on the drums & carried on singing.... brilliant 😂
This actually wasn’t the start of his concert. This was the 16th song he played (out of 24). The arena held about 20,000 people.
After a pause, it was the beginning of the second part
It was actually 80,000 not 20,000
@@bobbiehofer4924 Not true. This concert was at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, now Accor Arena. It holds 20,300 people for concerts. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accor_Arena
Dude, you could only dream of seeing someone with Phil's talent in a 80k arena. Not for less than 1k.
@@scottrackley4457 not sure if that was directed at me, but I was part of the 56,000-person audience for Genesis at Dodger Stadium. Saw Phil solo and with Genesis at smaller venues too.
Phil is a legend! U just witnessed GREATNESS‼️
I love this song by phill Collins always have an always will.❤❤❤❤❤
The crowd knows what is coming ❤
I’m giggling here…waiting for him to sit down!
He also played drums for The Bee Gees on a few tours.
Yes it's his song. He wrote this amazing song and played the greatest drumming solo I've ever heard! You will be in shock 😮
Phil started is professional career with Genesis 1971 as a drummer, and at one point, he was considered one of the best drummers in the world, his career expands almost 50 years countless awards, gold albums. Hits after hits….listen to Genesis.. Dance on a volcano, jaw dropping!
Good job for not interrupting that drum solo!
Thanks.
Phil said he wrote this song after he divorced his first wife.He also said He was a drummer that could sing,He said " Not a singer that could play drums".
Another one of his divorce songs is "I dont care anymore" ...
It’s all about the slow build, my man! ❤ This was written in the 70’s- the performance here was 30 years later. Timeless, timeless.
Reaction videos to this song are hands down the best. Every comment before the drums is unintentionally hilarious.
He is one of the best drummers in history! He was a drummer before he was a singer. I'm so gutted I never saw him live
I did Fantastic ❤
Me too.
This has been one of my favorite songs all of my life! ❤Phil Collin’s music
Part of the show....it is the anticipation because you knew what eventually would be coming!!
There have been many theories over what this song is about, but the truth is that Phil wrote this song while he was going through his divorce. This is a manifestation of the emotions he felt. It is by far the most famous song of his incredible career.
Really ?!! Impatient. This was a fantastic build up
The Drum beat is The heart beat of everyone listening ❤️
Probably one of the best live performances ever. Peace, Love!!
Yes it is his original song it was sampled just like every other rock song for the last 30 years.
Best drummer ever !!!!! Sr Phill Collins !!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙋🏻♀️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Unique talent !!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
And now you know why people love Phil Collins. A true presence from the moment he stepped on the stage.
Phil Collins is one of three artists who sold over 100 million copies solo and with a band, which was Genesis in this case. The other two are Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson.
An OUTSTANDING way to begin his concert 😎👍 Love his music... Love his drumming... LOVE his lyrics and how he delivers them ❤
Born in '72...I hardly listen to much current songs...but I will forever have these kind of songs in my playlist.
Songs from the 70s, 80s, 90s for me were some of the best.
Most of the best songs came right from the heart & soul of the songwriters & singers.
Phil is now in a wheel chair, he's disabled and unable to play the drums, he's a legend.
O goodness!! I pray he has good thoughts ❤
Sad 😞
Oh, didn't know. He was a hero to me when his daughter was born & he wrote & sang a song to her.❤ also when he took a long leave of absence to raise her. ❤❤❤
Wasn't this one of his last combo performances? I feel like he quit drumming not long after, and its why the buildup was soooo extended.
I didn't know. I hope his health improves.
It's so nice to see the younger folks understanding the absolute beauty in music. ❤ I watch this video all the time!
I loved your reaction to this song. He was in pain when he wrote it because he had been betrayed by his wife.
It will always be a classic song, as everyone has felt his pain in their life. Phil Collins is a legend.
Phil is a master at commanding the stage and the audience! "Just Another Day in Paradise" is a must as it speaks to a social issue that just seems to never get resolved. Great reaction (eventually) lol. Stay strong and safe! New sub at age 66! 🤠
You were a twinkle in your parents eye when he recorded this and I was a very young woman in her early twenties when this song came out and you felt this song in your soul because we understood
Phil is a master at building the suspense and anticipation that when he finally gets on his drums its all worth it,lol!!🎶❤✌
Angry Phil Collins is our favorite Phil Collins!🥁🎹🎸😄
Thank you for enjoying ! Collins was awesome in his day!!! Love be him always will!!!
