He was 17 when he wrote this. It is in part about his mother abandoning him and his dad. It's also about leaving home to make your own mark in the world. Holding back the years - holding back past memories and the fears you face when moving on ❤ "If You Don't Know Me By Now" is the cover you're thinking about. He does it justice indeed. I love his voice
I agree. The commercialism of the music destroys the listening of the actual song and lyrics. I prefer old school 60s 70s live music or studio nor even just the song playing. No video. As if the song is not important enough alone. Sad. Come back 60s 70s style . Lol😂
This song was Simply Red's very first Top 40 hit in America. The song did peaked at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the early summer of 1986. It stayed at #1 for one week. A beautiful song indeed!!!
The best thing about music is that u can interpret one way & I can feel it another way. It is about his own life experience, but it's very open to interpretation. Oh & he's even better live, I couldn't believe it!
Great reaction. Mick grew up around the corner from me in Denton, Manchester, UK. He wrote this at 17 about the struggles he had with his mother abandoning him and his father when Mick was very very young, and then the clashes he had with his father when he was growing up on the poverty line. You've GOT TO DO more Simply Red but please do the LIVE stuff !!! For a recommendation you can react LIVE to this when Mick was in his beloved home Town playing at the "theatre of dreams" which is Manchester United's football stadium. Mick was a "RED" "Simply Red" !!! (the term of endearment to Manchester United) and had been watching them from a young age. In 1996 Sir Alex Ferguson the infamous Manager introduced him at Old Trafford where he did a sell out concert. All his hits are in this concert but if you want to hear just an acoustic guitar and Mick singing this song LIVE it is from about 41 minutes in. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do.
Love Simply Red, they were my fav for a few years 25 years ago. You must do a LIVE Simply Red! Mick Hucknall is the ultimate live performer. The entire band is fire! BP I know you don't take requests, per say, but I would suggest the beginning of a live concert from 1996, LIVE AT OLD TRAFFORD, when they come onstage and the first song sets the mood for this really talented band led by Mick Hucknall. They are still touring today.
"Holding Back the Years" is a song by the English soul and pop band Simply Red, released as the third single from their debut studio album, Picture Book (1985). In 1986, the ballad[4] reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. The group's frontman Mick Hucknall wrote the song when he was 17, while living at his father's house. In a 2018 interview, Hucknall said the song was inspired by a member of the teaching staff at Manchester School of Art, where Hucknall was a fine-art student:
You forgot to say he was 3 when she walked out and she never contacted him after that, when he found her years later she wanted nothing to do with him… very sad.
They are phenomenal live!!! Stars from the Symphonica in Rosso concert is stunning and exactly how he describes where the crowd sings the chorus. It’s amazing. 👌🏼👌🏼
Great reaction. I’ve seen Simply Red a number of times. Great live band. Can I also suggest Raye she’s a UK independent artist who picked up 6 Brits this year more than any other artist ever. Please can you react to Raye performing her song Oscar Winning Tears at the Royal Albert Hall, you want regret it.
I recall this song being about his mother abandoning him and his father when he was a kid after having an affair. I could be wrong, that's what I remember. The woman in the video is supposed to be his mom and he is witnessing the affair.
I am so enjoying ya'll and you singular reaction to the music i grew up on.. i wish schools would have music appreciation for the young folks . so they could understand better the journey of music from then to now
This is his original song. Hes Irish roots but grew up in northern England. Pater = father, Mater= mother. This song has been sampled relentlessly. The great ones always are.
You want to see a man who still had the same amazing, powerful voice when he was in his 80s as he did in his 20s, you must check out the group "Procal Heram" performing "Whiter Shade of Pale"

In a 2018 interview, Hucknall said the song was inspired by a member of the teaching staff at Manchester School of Art, where Hucknall was a fine-art student: the lecturer suggested the greatest paintings are produced when the artist is working in a stream of consciousness, which Hucknall then tried to apply to songwriting - "Holding Back the Years" was the second song he wrote using this method
When I first heard something from them I was about a week ago,I heard the name simply red but didn't know any of their music , he voice is so cool love it,n I really enjoyed listening to ur little chat 😊 thank you for all you do😘🥰
1:05 The song is called Sunrise by Simple Red. It uses Hall and Oates beat from I Can't Go For That and it is a total JAM. It was released in 2003. Definitely you should check it out!
Mother's Finest - Baby Love !!!! Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime !!!! The Clash - The Guns of Brixton !!!! Ted Nugent - Writing on the Wall !!!! The Knife - Silent Shout !!!! The Vibrators - Keep it Clean !!!! Babylon Zoo - Spaceman !!!! Ace of Base - All that She Wants !!!! Brother Dege - Too Old to Die Young !!!! Eddy Grant - Living on the Frontline !!!! Praying Mantis - Dream On !!!! The Kinks - (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman !!!! Kingdom Come - Mad Queen !!!!
Time goes by quicker as we age. Years when we are younger never suffers issues and problems we have until we grow into adulthood. These Years are basically what form us into becoming who we are or in some cases who we choose no longer to be. You know, the geek at school at a 25 year reunion might have become a hottie with a massive career. Times change, focus changes, but the summers as a kid to most are immortal. Love your reactions and reviews of UK bands/singers. As this one has a film out about his life - Better Man (which is also a song) can you please review Robbie Williams. And James - Laid.
Every reactor plays this song, and it is a great song, but you will really see the talent here if you check a live song or performance from one of the concerts on YT, Live from OLD TRAFFORD 1996 is fire.
No offense to BO or his Guests, but they area ALL forgetting how OLD these songs are when they think the Original Hook is a cover since someone else has used it since its original release... Samples, clips, redeux, etc are things you all have done, so you must know SOMEONE did these hooks, riffs and catchy lyrics first, lol. I think BP needs to at the very lease look up the song he's gonna react to as far as year of release, who wrote what, and who else performed what, as well as when etc. No need to back story [the Comments provide excellent info about back stories.] Still, love the authentic enjoyment and vibile impressed by what is being heard, thanks BP.
Simply Red did a cover of "Night Nurse". You really should react to this one. Here is some more information about the song. The original artist was George Isaac. Watch the official version of the video.
Hi guys, great reactions! I wanted to drop something here that I think you'll appreciate. This is Toto live. Toto - Hold The Line (Official Video). It's a good one! Have a great day!
Bro - I kept watching your reactions and thought for sure someone would have hit you with it, but I am not seeing it so I'm going to request a reaction from you. As a girl dad, you'll understand why. The song is Alyssa Lies by Jason Michael Carroll.
I feel really bad but my sister was going out with this guitarist Jamie in a band called Hammerack and in those days you had to be 21 years old to get in the pubs but because i knew the band i'd get in i was 14 but my first experience was a bar called the Gladstone and my first band was called Fat Sally and i was 12 now i wasn't the only underage kid there but most where girls and they where 18 years old. I lost my virginity with one of these girls in the restroom cubicle.
Men talk like ‘a wins a win’ if a teacher or some other woman had hit them up at a young age. But I gad a relative that was 6 ft tall and cute at 13, and high school girls came on to him and some seduced him. And honestly, his body was ready but his mind and heart was not, it messed him up badly. Hanging out with an older crowd exposed him to substances that made him feel better though. Except of course they didn’t make things better. It didn’t help his parents were going through a tough patch too and were missing the clues of his being abused. Eventually his friend told his parents who then told the boy’s parents and they got their act together. As case when staying together for the child did save the marriage, and the child too. But he was probably in his mid twenties before he was back on track mentally, emotionally and scholastically. Rape is rare. Even if you are so young you don’t truly understand the power being used against you and the consent you imagine you are giving. You are too young to really understand and consent and so it’s rape.
Quit overthinking this song you're over analyzing it. He wrote it about his mother when he was 17. When she died and it's about his mother, she had real bad addiction to drugs and alcohol and it took her life when he was 17. That's what it's about. Not all this crazy stuff you're talking about. It's about his mother rest in peace
Gangster rapper watches your reactions ahead. Obviously he's checked out your reaction to Simply Red prior to this! Lying is easy to detect when using common sense. Jealous bones in this man too. Word of advice: Just relax. Enjoy!

Thank you. Lived a similar experience and I’m 66. We get stronger when we don’t let our past demons define us.
I was a huge Simply Red fan as a teenager. I've had this album in vinyl , cassette, 8track, and cd. I love this album.
A lot of singers from the UK have very soulful voices.
This song was Simply Red's very first Top 40 hit in America. The song did peaked at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the early summer of 1986. It stayed at #1 for one week. A beautiful song indeed!!!
He wrote this song about his mother.... I believe she had addiction issues and left him behind
Whitby, North Yorkshire, England is where this was filmed, Mick 64 now and voice exactly the same……
The best thing about music is that u can interpret one way & I can feel it another way. It is about his own life experience, but it's very open to interpretation. Oh & he's even better live, I couldn't believe it!

Он шикарно поёт вживую и действительно зрители поют припев все вместе и это очень впечатляет

You forgot to say he was 3 when she walked out and she never contacted him after that, when he found her years later she wanted nothing to do with him… very sad.
Yesss! You should definetly check out Simply Red live. He is an outstanding singer! Check out Simply Red in Cuba for example.
'Picturebook' which contains 'Holding back the years' album came out in the mid eighties...one of the best containing many chart hits!
First time I've noted a Boz Scaggs vibe to this one. He's such an incredible vocalist.
Simply Red live in Cuba, what a journey got to check it out

You're likely thinking of "If You Don't Know Me By Now", they covered that song perfectly.
I recall this song being about his mother abandoning him and his father when he was a kid after having an affair. I could be wrong, that's what I remember. The woman in the video is supposed to be his mom and he is witnessing the affair.

SUNRISE - (I cant go for that Hall & Oates cover)❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Im addicted! Love this one!
One of my Favorites!
"Sunrise" is a Simply Red hit. He took the music from "I Can't Go For That" by Hall&Oates.
Released in 1985 and the band wrote it!! Outstanding song!!💜🎵🎼🎶🥁🎙🎤🎹🎸🔥🔥🤘🤘

There's a concert video where he does exactly what you were saying at 4:30 here, the crowd sings loud.
Simply Red are great. You should listen to more. Mick Hucknall is the former love of Catherine Zeta Jones (Douglas).
He does a cover of If You Don’t Know Me By Now, really good!
He wrote the song.
lots of these songs from the 80s and 90s need the video for full effect.
Brand Nubian used this song as a sample for their song "Hold On" back in the 90s.
Do the right thing by simply Red is fantastic
1:05 The song is called Sunrise by Simple Red. It uses Hall and Oates beat from I Can't Go For That and it is a total JAM. It was released in 2003. Definitely you should check it out!
The cover song you were referring to was “If you don’t know me by now “ previously released by Harold Melvin and the blue notes
He's right the concert video is so much better even though the vocals are almost identical
Strangled by the wishes of pater(father)
Hoping for the arms of mater(mother)
To me this says it all, the struggle of every little boy
“If You Don’t Know Me By Now” is the cover you are thinkong of I’m certain, it’s wonderful and deserves a reaction.
The cover they recorded and had a big hit with was Moneys Too Tight To Mention. It’s groovy as hell.
The "Reagonomics" part of that song got them in some trouble
Hey Robert & Krizz!

Another song kind of in this ballpark that’s really good and relatable is “Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen
❤❤❤❤❤
Simply Red did a cover of "Night Nurse". You really should react to this one. Here is some more information about the song. The original artist was George Isaac. Watch the official version of the video.
This song was not a remake. He did the remake on Harold Melvin’s “If You Don’t Know Me By Now’”

I'm sure the Simply Red song you're thinking of will be 'Money's Too Tight To Mention' 😉
Yes it is about his mother leaving him and his dad when he was a child
Mick Hucknall has enormous talent. He doesn’t need to STEAL (or SAMPLE) anyone’s hard fought original work.
If You Don't Know Me By Now - Simply Red
Is this a re-upload? I swear I watched this last night, but my youtube app says I haven't watched this yet.

The videos in the 80's were a crap shoot, sometimes it would have meaning, sometimes it was just weird lol

Brother Dege - Too Old to Die Young.
Stars is a better song
The video really takes away from the song lotta times
