He wrote this song when he was in his mid teens about his mother who abandoned him when he was a baby. He was holding on to the wishes of meeting her and getting a love he never received
Probably the best male blue-eyed soul singer you will ever hear!!! He does mostly originals, but a lot of incredible classic R&B covers. He is not a one-hit-wonder....he has several US hits, but her doesn't tour as much as he does in the UK, Europe and Australia. I saw him live in Los Angeles and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. There are many live performances on RUclips of him. His nickname is "Red" and his real name is Mick Hucknall. He is amazing.
Amazing? Yes. Best blue eyed soul singer? Naw... Marc Broussard, Bobby Caldwell, Michael McDonald, Van Morrison, Bob Seger, Daryl Hall, Righteous Bros, George Michael, Amy Winehouse,...IMO, all better.
@@joelspaulding5964 you're entitled to your own opinion. How much simply Red have you listened to? How many live performances have you seen of him? Just curious.
He has had thirteen studio albums, six compilation albums one extended play and fifty three singles, he continues to make music and perform. He also owns a successful vine yard in Italy and has stakes in several restaurants, he is also involved in property investments. Basically, he doing alright for himself 😊 He’s been a favourite of mine for about 40 years. To last that long in the music industry, he must be doing something right. 👍
I would put this on a Loop and listen to it all day long. When we first heard it we all thought he was Black (like Bobby Caldwell, Tom Jones, Righteous Brothers, Michael McDonald, Hall & Oates), but the “Blue Eyed Soul” came through. We didn’t know until years later the video came out. What a beautiful song, great lyrics, great arrangement, great images, I love it!….. SanJoséBob
This was really great! Simply Red's sound is so classy. Those scenes of castles in Ireland were awesome. You guys mentioned Dion Warwick songs and Luther Vandross, that was very cool to find out. I remember hearing that Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees wrote the song "Heart Breaker" specifically for her. She turned it down a few times, having already recorded "Walk On By". She didn't want her image to appear to be too sad and gloomy. She later changed her mind and decided to record it, it was a Big hit for her. Much love to you guys. Love your channel.
buried wife, family, friends. thank God I lived it, wish I could hold onto it but is what is. Hope to see them all again (got some apologizin' to do, straight up included)
I interned at a radio station in San Francisco in college and I got to see this band and meet them when they toured with this album. They were phenomenal and very nice. Hit their song "Money's Too Tight (to Mention)" for more funkiness. Mick Hucknall's voice definitely has that blue-eyed soul vibe going on.
Lord have mercy im crying 😢😢😢 .. bring back memories ❤❤ one of my all time favorite songs ever!!!❤❤❤...when all you have is menories .. being 11 hearing this all the time thinking of family and friends and being young❤🙏
It is a group- please do not forget that, all band members are playing characters in this video. Check out their first single Money Too Tight To Mention. So relevant today in the UK.
😍😍😍What I heard is that they were called Red in the beginning. But when people asked about the band-name and they said "Red" - they got "what!?" - Just "Simply red", one of the bandmembers said... And there you go! 🙂More, please! Thanks guys!
This is a remake, the original was released in 1982 by British punk band Frantic Elevators, which Mick Hucknall the lead singer of Simply Red fronted from 1979 to 1982. The Frantic Elevators version is available on RUclips
Oh my Lord, I forgot how much I loved loved this song! I got internal goose bumps hearing this song and I don’t care if he has red, white, pink or black soul? This Ginger Guy “Simply Got it.” He tore at my heart strings. Bless you. 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
One of the best Bands of the 90's .You would love them Something Got Me Started, New Flame, so many. Many children gere today because of their songs....😊💌
This is the one I listen to the least. The ones you listed are all jams.. I also love "Something Got Me Started", "For Your Babies", "So Beautiful", "Angel"
And Simply Red always did the megahit "Stars". Mick Hucknall has an amazing vocal range. And yes, he also fall into that "Blue Eyed Soul" genre like Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Michael Bolton, and Daryl Hall.
I grew up in the seventies and I loved randb, metal, and hip hop but this is one of my favorite songs ever. No matter your age but it hits a little harder at my age lol. Great reaction.
Simply Red had at least 10 songs in the UK Top 10. "Holding Back the Years" didn't win the GRAMMY, but it did win ASCAP Pop Music Awards for Most Performed Song, which is pretty cool.
This track is an all-time classic, I will never get tired of it. I loved your conversation about aging, but for real, one of the things I like about your channel is seeing people around my age holding it down on RUclips. That means a lot. And Olli, I hope you appreciate your good genes!
If you liked this, check out Simply Red. LIVE at Stafford, it is an entire concert, this song is on there, but check the first 10 minutes, the opening, it is so great, Mick is famous worldwide, is nearly 70 years old today and still playing concerts. He is very soulful, and no one can sing better, he is an amazing LIVE performer.
For a another great singer, this one from Ireland, give Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic" a try. A song than I can truly say can be truly transformative.
I'm an 80's kid which means i'm 50 and this was n still is one of my favorite songs. I'm a NY kid Hip Hop was all my stuff then, but thank u to MTV and all the videos and different music, or i would not know any other great music from around the world growing up.
Fellas, the first time I heard Simpy Red's Holding Back The Tears was an episode of Miami Vice. Miami Vice used MTV music to play on their shows. Soulful Cat!!!
another example of great talent from across the ocean that made amazing music but never had the same level of appreciation in North America - there is so much talent out there -- thanks for keeping your minds open
Hi Guys. Thanks for another great video/reaction. Another good Simply Red song to check out (they have a few) is "Money's too tight to mention". As for Dione Warwick - I love her, just a few of her songs you might want to check out are: Heartbreaker, Walk on by, Do you know the way to San Jose?, I'll never fall in love again and I'll never love this way again.

That dude is soul!
I want my youth back! I want 1985 back and stay there forever!
That soft, "That's all I have to say" after that roar is brilliant. So good.
I love that part. The man said his piece!
Guys...They are still filling arenas...😘
Simply Red also did "If You Don't Know Me By Now'', "Stars", and "Money Is Tight".
Mick Hucknall Wrote this song at 19, and Simply Red went on to become an epic band with many hits…
He sounds just as good today, the vocal talent is insane.
He actually sounds better today.
His voice has turned a little raspier, but he still hits that beautiful high note.
This still sends a shiver right down my spine 40 years on ! Simply gorgeous !
Try Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now...crazy vocals 🔥
It is a cover from original Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. A very excellent cover!!
Love Simply Red!
An often overlooked/forgotten MUST HEAR Classic,, Simply Red "Money's Too Tight To Mention" (Official Music Video A MUST!!)
A cover but good one nonetheless

Age has been kind to his voice. He's even better now.
This song brings me to tears
You have hear Money Too Tight, soul to the max.
He wrote this song when he was a kid, amazing.
Not just a redhead, he's the ginger Otis Redding (for a couple of songs anyway). Voice as smooth as honey dipped in molasses.
I heard Smokey Robinson was his idol. I think you can hear that in his voice.
Otis Redding said he tried to make his voice sound like the trumpet 🎺. I can hear it in his voice for sure.
Beautiful voice I love his version of you make me feel brand new
I love Simply Red's performance of 'Stars' before a Russian audience when he was older. Magic !
The most charismatic and talented singer

As a teen, liked the song. As an adult, love and appreciate it
This song is so affecting. Gets me in the feels.
Can't judge a book by its cover. Soul knows no bounds - race, colour, ethnicity or gender.
You dudes ain't old, your experienced! I'm 66 and my minds 21 but my body is 90. Still rocking !
