Simply Red was not a one hit Wonder. He is great. He still sings to this day❤
Simplly Red was the band name. "He" is Mick Hucknall.
His voice is still brilliant.
ExACTLY HIS VOICE IS LIKE NO OTHER
i think he's sold something like 60 million records, far from a 1-hit wonder
Seriously, you are the first reactor ( and I've watched many ) who actually understood the Pater, Mater lyrics. And the rest too. Great reaction.
This
Shon's switched on. Have noticed really good analysis and understanding from him in many of his vids.
Exactly! Pater and Mater are of Latin origin and he knows the meaning. Very astute.
It's where we get words like Paternal, Maternal, Patriarch, Matriarch etc.
@@patrickwells8349 Yeah, I had 3 years of Latin in High School
He's from Manchester UK and now at age 63 he can still sing with the same clarity and smooooooothness
Simply Red are phenomenal. Yes this is about his mum who left when he was 3. This is early 80s. He wrote this when he was 16 I believe. They were HUGE world wide.
Simply Red did not write this song
Mick Hucknall of Simply Red wrote this. You were almost right , he wrote this when he was 17. I , like you think they are incredible. What a voice.
@@cathyyonce8492 mick Hucknall wrote this.
@@cathyyonce8492 What?
@@cathyyonce8492 Then who did?
Mick Hucknall is one of the most prolific singer/songwriters in recent music history. His voice is velvet, soulful and moving on all levels. He and Simply Red are one the most criminally overlooked, underrated and unappreciated bands. This band is an absolute must have for your music catalog. You will never be disappointed in whatever album you play. Soulful to his very core. It is his essence.
That "yodeling" is called "Tremelo."
Yes, its lovely.
Proof once again that real soul knows no colour. Mick Hucknall was and is one of the UK's finest. 🙋♂
He's English. Simply Red are/were a very soulful group. Check any of their hit songs and you won't be disappointed!
Definitely, especially 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' his cover of the Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes classic soul song from the '60's. It's FIRE!! 🙋♂
This is almost 40 years old. I grew up in the 80s. Fantastic decade for music.
If You Don’t Know Me By Now is a great Simply Red cover of a Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes song. You’ll love it! Thank you. Love, from Oklahoma 🤍
Mick Hucknall is English & his voice is full of vibrato. This song is said to be about his upbringing. His mother left the family when he was only 3. It affected him the rest of his life. Glad you checked Simply Red out. Love, from Oklahoma 🤍
Great reaction! Check out this song by Simply Red “ If you don’t know me by now” . Would love to see
You react to it!
There is a live version.. his voice .. just like this recorded version
Yes,that was my favorite one by far. I hope he listens to it soon.
Also, the original Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes!
This is one of the reason why I am a subscriber of this RUclips channel, Shon gets the music and the artist behind them. Not many reactors catch that British father and mother reference in the beginning of the song. 😎
Gave you a thumbs up because i agree but for the record its Latin, not British. Nevertheless Shon is very astute and eloquent. Much more so than most reactors.
He was abandonned by his mother, this is why in the beggining he says “get to meet her sooner or later”, it’s heart breaking.
And he did many years later....
Motherless child💧
myself can identify
Holding on🤍😌
Yes. When you know the back story, it's crushing. As a child who's hero (Dad) left without a goodbye...I feel this.
@@89801wink i hear you
This is an all-time great song!!!
The black guy he tips his hat to is part of the band.
This song is almost 40 years old. Just crazy!! This is when music videos were made to be "little movies." Incredible story that was beautifully filmed.
Timeless classic
I believe that Simply Red is categorized as jazz. Mick Hucknall wrote this song when he was 17 years old and it was released in 1985. The band members have changed but they still perform and the music is really great. Mick's voice is magical.
More R&B than jazz.
What a voice, not many are blessed to possess a voice like this ❤
If you like this one. I think you’ll like true by spandau ballet.
Simply Red is so fantastic!! It amazes me hardly anyone ever reacts to “Sunrise”. It’s such a banger he put out later on his career.
He wrote this at 17 in 1980s Manchester, this is over 35yrs old :)
Simply Red "Money's Too Tight To Mention" 🔥❤️🔥
I have no idea how/why you only have 45k subscribers, your reactions are always on point and so much better than the majority of the reactors out there. Don’t give up, more and more people are going to discover your reaction videos and you will have the following you deserve
🎉🎉yes
He’s got rocket, we just have to help with the logarithm :)
I totally agree. Shon is very astute and eloquent. Much more so than most reactors.
Michael James Hucknall has a voice full of soul. Now, at his 60something still got it! As Simply Red, the band, they had a bunch of hits in the 80s & 90.
I always say that if the artist is good, check live versions. Try Verona in Rosso or in Sydney. Try songs like:
If You Don't Know Me By Now
Stars
Sunrise
Something Got Me Started
You Make Me Feel Brand New
For Your Babies
Fairground
There's a lot to choose from!
That little ginger can sing like a MFer
The way I CACKLED 😂😂😂😂 but you are 💯
Released in 1985!! 🎶🎼🎵🎸🎤🎧🎹🥁🔥🔥🔥
Glorious use of the muted trumpet. It has always added a perfect touch for me.
His voice is as good today as it was back then. Very strong vocals. If You Don't Know Me By Now is incredible.✌❤🤘
If you don't know me by now is every bit as good. You'll want to hear it for sure ☮️
yeah, this song came out in 1985, so it's much older then one might think...
I'm always surprised by the fact that you are a genius! And so YOUNG!!!!!!! I'm a fan!
Check out the live 1992 Montreux version. His voice seems even crisper live. And he is so effortless in his delivery. So good!
This is almost 40 years ago! And, he still sounds great singing it today. Check out Bobby Caldwell-"What You Won`t Do, Do For Love".. Hall & Oates-"Sara Smile".. Michael Bolton-"How Am I Supposed To Live Without You".. Rick Astley-"Never Gonna Give You Up"...some Blue Eyed Soul you will love!
It's been that long since this tune came out ? Wow I'm nearly 65 and I remember this guy, I love this guy.
Yes. Came out in 1985! 39 years…time flies, but the classic songs can make time stand still! You hear an old beautiful song that you liked, and it takes you back to that time. Classics.❤
They have so many more hits, If you don’t know me, Stars, Money’s to tight to mention, Fairground & many more so please check them out. ❤️🇬🇧
Money's too tight to mention is one of my favs!
This song is from the 1985 album Picture Book
Single originally released in 1985 and hit #51 on UK charts.
Rereleased as a single in 1986 and it went to #1 on Billboard Top 100 in the U.S. and to #2 in the UK Singles Chart.
Nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Duo or Group With Vocals.
Holding back the years came out I believe in 1985 He has a lot of nice tunes. You should check out , a cover he does called " If you don't know me by now" absolutely beautiful . Great reaction.Ty for sharing this tune with us. ❤️
I never clicked on a video so fast! Mick is an amazing singer. Never a one hit wonder. Check out "If you don't know me by now".
“Strangled by the wishes of Pater, Hoping for the arms of Mater, Get to me the sooner or later”-some of the best lyrics ever in a song-so powerful
Back in the mid 1980s I used to record MTV Music Videos on VHS tapes. MTV used to do the best song of the week countdowns on the weekends. This video & song were one of my favorites that I used to play all the time. Simply Red was/is an incredible band.
Money’s Too Tight to Mention, Stars (my fave!), Sunrise, If You Don’t Know Me By Now, Something Got Me Started, just to name a few. Mick Hucknall is Simply Red. I love his voice.
Simply Red “if you don’t” ❤
Blue eyed soul at it's best even at 40 years later. Many great hits. Check out the video for STARS. ❤
Groovy far out glad you liked. It
They just released their ‘24 touring schedule.. and - Mick sounds even better (IMO) today!! Definitely not a ‘one hit wonder’… but not played as much in US as they are in Europe! Mick wrote this song when he was 17… it was popular over 40 yrs ago (pre auto-tune), so you’re enjoying his true - amazing - voice! Thanks for your thoughtful reaction.
Even in 2024 he still almost sound the same. A gifted voice.
Absolutely loved your reaction to this. I would encourage you to explore more of their music. Mick’s voice is special.
He sings just as well today and he sings just as well live , he’s got a fantastic voice
If You Don't Know Me By Now is a cover he did but really shows off his voice!
watching younger gens reacting on here it's become almost expected that everytime a song/voice sounds soulful they assume they're black.
it's fun to see it happen.blue eyed soul strikes again😊
this seems to be the song most reactors start with.hope you'll do more.
This song, Stars, and If you don’t know me by now, are some of his top and biggest hits. This takes me back to Taunton, Massachusetts in the late ‘80s.
Thanks Shon for the reaction to this song. This is one of my favorite songs and now will be stuck in my head for days! Keep up the good work.
I’m a little old 76 year old British women. Love Mick Hucknall he’s from my neighbourhood. I love your reaction to this, so empathetic, so intelligent, more people should subscribe, your good.
A very popular group from Manchester UK, with lots of hits.
Fairground
Money's too tight to mention
This song came out in the 80's.... He also has a Great song called (If you don't know me by now) should be your next song by Simply Red!
#1 Only and favorite
shirtless Reactor💋
Big Passion for Music🔥
My favorite 1985 hit !!
Shon....you seriously shock me at times, I'm a huge enthusiast music, voice, instrumentalist and just love the pure sound of heaven. You said it, just after you were finding what word fit for thos man's vocals in this song. You nailed my friend, it's like a sift yodel. Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees in their song, Zoo much Heaven Barry does this yodel like no other!@
Their song "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" is great, a bit more uptempo.
And still relevant for many people.
You need to watch this video live 1970 Chicago 25 or 6 or 24 . Heard this song a thousand times and didn't realize that the lead guitarist tore it all to hell. FIRE!!!!!
I got to see them play a show in Mannheim Germany in 1987 or 88 while I was stationed over there in the Air Force. They were just so good live. The singer wrote this song when he was just 17 years old. Amazing band.
Simply Red is a great band but this song is next level. Mick Hucknall’s singing coupled with a truly soulful and beautiful accompaniment makes this song an enduring classic.
That place is Whitby a seaside town in Yorkshire, England. The ruined building at the beginning is an Abbey on the hill above the town. Originally built in 657AD ( yup over 1,000 years ago) then rebuilt in the 13th century in the Gothic Style. Bram Stoker, who wrote Dracula, used the Abbey and Whitby as a blueprint for the setting of his novel.
I'm a New Canadian Sub today.
As a 73 yr old girl...I've loved the evolving music scene. Saw Elvis, The Cure, Tragically Hip which is a Canadian band (New Orleans is Sinking) btw ACDC Is electrical terminology. At 50 yr old I discovered Easy E & fell in love (Louisville Slugger) & then Eminem & a new genre opened up for me. Santana produced Smooth & I think you'd like it. We should talk 🤣
Heart and soul in his voice.
I love this song so much this is the first time I've listened to it in years because it's so beautiful and I get so overwhelmed with emotion that it makes me cry every single time...what an amazing and underrated singer...no way is this singer a one hit wonder...
Simply has sold over 60 million albums and well over a billion hits on here. Doesn’t seem interested in America, which is a huge market for any artist. Shame as I’d love to see this band live. Feels like he’s one of those artists from the old skool. Still playing sell out shows all over Europe since 1985 I hear people say. Anyhow I think he’s a very skillful, emotional singer. Check out his singing for BB.King ! Bless you Sir!
@@Billybofey "Ma'am" not "Sir"... Liz is short for Elizabeth🤣🤣...
I second the recommendation for Andy Gibb, Shadow Dancing.
Andy was the baby brother of the Gibb Brothers ( Bee Gees). He passed away in 1988, aged only 30. Andy was not a Bee Gees, as he was much younger than his 3 brothers
i read it was an 11 year gap that's why he wasn't in the group.i assume 11 yrs between him and fraternal twins robin, maurice
This mans voice is incredible. Thanks for the reaction.❤
Mick Hucknall was 17, yes 17, when he wrote this song and recorded the video. Watch his current today performances, is one of the top 5 LIVE performer in the World. Never mimes at concerts which the majority of US performers do.
I watch him live 2 times in croatia in pula..his voice is awesome and smooth.legend
Oh man, this takes me back..hard to not get all nostalgic listening to this. Simply Red had a few hits and were a great band.
He wrote this song when he was 17 years old,one of my top 3 favorite songs!
Simply Red from Manchester, England. Phenomenal band, phenomenal singing from Mick Hucknall whose voice only gets stronger with age. Check out his concert in Cuba which is also on RUclips.
I wish Simply Red would tour in North America… I keep looking out for them. And more than just a one-hit wonder… check out Sunrise, Stars and Fairground… among many others. LOVE! ❤
"If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "Stars" - you gotta check out these two Simply Red songs! So good!
Its the quiver in his voice.
Mater and Pater are the German words for Mother and Father, I believe.
..
Mater and Pater originated in Latin.
What a great music video!
Beautiful voice, Beautiful song. Always loved it❤❤❤ That "yodel " may be his vibratto.
This song is from Simply Red's 1985 debut album. Mick Hucknall wrote it at age 17.
Since you hadn't known of Simply Red yet, you're in for a very worth-while "rabbit hole"...
"Holding Back The Years" definitely wasn't a one-hit wonder.
All best from Germany
Yes, please there is more Simply Red. You will love it.
TY. They’re a great group, great lead singer, 1985 to th 1990s, only the lead singer ever stayed the same all these years, great vocalist, other songs Stars, If You Don’t Knoe Me By Now, Never Never Love, Something Git Me Started, Sunrise…., Muick Hucknull sings his heart out. So soulful.
The Red has pumped out many hits. He's a joy to listen to. Peace Everyone.
This was the music of my Youth, Mick Hucknell is the lead singer of Simply Red and from Manchester, England. My all time favourite song is Stars by Simply Red, on the Album Stars, I believe it had 5 #1 hits on that one album alone. The late 70's early 80s produced some great artists and songs. Your comment that you expected him to be black with his soulful voice, you need to listen to UB40 and the song Red Red Wine, the white guy singing Reggae style. Thanks for the memories
"Talk it over" and "Bring it on back" by Grayson Hugh. Blue-eyed soul from the late 80s.
I love this song. Thank you for reacting to it.
Singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, is a powerhouse of talent! The Band Simply Red were around form 1985 to 2010. I seen people react by just listening to the songs and they a hugely surprised when the see the singer for the first time, because they could have sworn that he was black! If you want to see more of him I recommend the song....If You Don't Know Me By Now!
The 80's knew how to do melancholy, that's for sure. I LOVE this song!
Simply Red was a very successful group from the mid to late 80's . Check out the album Picture Book 1985.. Out freakin standing!!! The singers name is Nick Hucknell he's Irish.
This was an amazing reaction!!! You get this song and his style so well.
His voice compleme ts the sax so well, it almost sounds like the saxophone itself. He feels soul and blues so deeply. You should here this live. He is INSANELY good.
I’ve had the pleasure of hearing Mick sing live and incredibly , he sounds even better live .
Mick Hucknall has a fantastic voice, and Simply Red brought out some amazing songs.
The sweetest poetry coupled with that voice, consumate musicians, Is he Scottish ? Wets the eye, every time.
One of those songs which means more as the years go by.
Simply Red; simply brilliant!
Lovely reaction! You should listen to him singing Stars, this guy has a brilliant voice
Smooooth af…Mick is amazing. He does a rendition of “If you don’t know me by now” absolutely amazing
Young man, you are too precious, I watched several of your reactions to different songs before, and I just had to subscribe to your channel, I simply couldn't hold off on it anymore. Not only are you musically intuitive but you are intelligent on top of it! This song, which came out in the 80s, in 1985 to be exact, is just goose-bump-inducing and beautiful! The way you analyzed it really impressed me! Way to go, bro, keep delighting us with more of your reactions! And I also like the fact that you have no shirt on like you're just chillin' at home.
Great group. Great reaction. Pretty sure it was around 1985, my senior year of high school.
Simply Red are from Manchester and they are one of the most successful bands to come out of the UK in the last 40 years, they've had many many hits here and across the globe. Mick Hucknall has one of the best voices in music, period.
Mick Hucknall wrote the song when he was 17, while living at his father's house. In a 2018 interview, Hucknall said the song was inspired by a member of the teaching staff at Manchester School of Art, where Hucknall was a fine-art student: the lecturer suggested the greatest paintings are produced when the artist is working in a stream of consciousness, which Hucknall then tried to apply to songwriting - "Holding Back the Years" was the second song he wrote using this method.
Simply Red has SO many other amazing songs.
