He’s trying to find himself after boarding school stripped him of his individuality. He no longer recognizes himself any more. “I know it sounds obsurd. Please tell me who I am”.
Roger Hodgson is one of the coolest guys on earth; I met him years ago and let me tell you, this dude knows how to give hugs! Very, very friendly and nice.
Again, this is the music of my generation. I’d forgotten what a well written, arranged and executed piece this was? Thanks for the memories! ☮️💕 I love your guys’ energy. You’re going to change the world!
Supertramp were definately huge! They were played on the radio for ages in a row. As a matter of fact, they still play them big time on the radio in Canada. They have so much to say in their songs.
Finally, my favourite band of all time. The Logical Song and Goodbye Stranger are the two most played songs from the album but there is not a bad song on the LP. You need to hit ANY song from their four consecutive classic albums between 1974-79: Crime of the Century (my favourite album by anyone ever), Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments and Breakfast In America (their most successful commercially). The next LP, Famous Last Words (1982) is also a great album. Please, please guys react to a lot more Supertramp. The ultimate anti-education system song by them is School, the lead tune from Crime of the Century. It has such a haunting harmonica intro. Supertamp uses a lot of saxophone, harmonica and even occasional clarinet but they are most known for the electric piano playing of lead singers/somgwriters Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. Their overall musicianship is among the best of any group but their lyrics are often serious with great social commentary. Get on the 'Tramp train boys.
So glad you guys are finally doing some Supertramp......Such a gifted, versatile, and under appreciated band IMO. You could literally pick 15-20 of their songs and they would leave you blown away. The harmonica in "Take The Long Way Home", is mesmerizing to me. Thanks so much guys, hope you enjoy this band and get to more of their great stuff in the coming months.
Curious that the boys never heard of them, I can understand the generational gap for lots of groups but these guys were the greatest band in the world for a few years. I know in my home town they (along with Charley Pride) held the local arena attendance record.
@@sallybannister6224 79 to 87 ate my favorite times. The stuff with Bob Calvert are great! Some of the stuff with Lemmy are pretty cool.. I haven't listened to anything after Electric Teepee.
John Helliwell is such a boss on this track. The way he does that clap, looks around and across to Roger ‘Jesus’ Hodgson, effortlessly collects the sax and takes centerstage for the solo. 70’s swag! In addition to Supertramp being such a cool band name, they were just so full of talent with so many instruments here: the alto sax, Wurlitzer electronic piano, electric guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar, bass, Elka and Oberheim synthesisers, acoustic piano, Hammond organ, Hohner Clavinet with wah-wah, siren whistle, drums, castanets, timbales, cowbell, and woodblocks!
This album was extremely rare in that it was flawless. Set aside the time one day and listen to it straight through. Its more than worth it. Good reaction.
Actually there are a fair few albums that are flawless (just off the top of my head I would go with: Disraeli Gears (by Cream), Cosmo's Factory (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Aqualung (Jethro Tull), L.A. Woman (The Doors), Led Zeppelin IV (??), Machine Head (Deep Purple), Demons & Wizards (Uriah Heep), Close to the Edge (Yes), Foxtrot (Genesis), For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night (Caravan) & Secret Treaties (Blue Öyster Cult). What was class about Supertramp was that they pulled off the trick after releasing two albums that were average at best. The follow ups were anything but average however with Crime of the Century & Breakfast in America being flawless and Crisis? What Crisis? & Even in the Quietest Moments being damn close 🥰🥰🥰🥰
@@shannonbennett987 I was merely pointing out that you were factually wrong...and I freely admit I had no idea you were so emotionally fragile that my last comment would destroy your sense of self-worth as it apparently has...and so I apologise and from now on I will only converse with people who are emotionally mature enough to cope with it. Yes when I was in high school i kept hearing this song not knowing who? But i liked it, it came on in the background at the school store where i was hangin, asked who is this, and 3 hot girls there immediately said the "Logical Song" and thats how I discovered the band.. Burned into my brain...

School was the first Supertramp song I ever listened to in 1975 and was hooked from there on. I also liked the Crisis What Crisis album which was overlooked by critics
The Logical Song was a double single with "Goodbye Stranger" off of the same album. Both big hits. You guys will love Goodbye Stranger, it has IMO the greatest outro guitar solo in rock history.
@ 8:47 that digital versus and sound is actually from an NFL game boy style box of the day, the sound engineer was playing during the rehearsal and they added that because they loved the sound, this predates cell phones btw. These guys were masters of sounds.
"You hear the phone ringing?" Actually, that wasn't a phone. It was a Mattel Electronics Football game, which was a first generation handheld game that was very popular at the time. The tone that was in the song was the tone you get when you fail to get a first down on 4th down and have turned the ball over to the opponent.
Roger's song is about being sent to boarding school for 10 years and what the hell it was all about. His voice is so amazing and there was no auto-tune back in 79. He's still singing and performing this in his 70s and can still hit those notes. John is always fantastic on the sax.
This song, and the whole album, was huge in Canada. I was in grade 9 or 10 when it came out, and everybody was singing it. Never had a song moved me before
You guys are fantastic & loved when you said & I quote “HE LOOKS LIKE JESUS” end quote! Lol loved it & definitely love this song,I’ve always loved Supertramp from way back, was my favorite band back in the day ❤️
One of the best concerts that I ever saw was Supertramp…the Crisis What Crisis tour in 1976 which was an album often overlooked but as excellent as Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America. Amazing album cover which is very appropriate for today’s times.
The drummer is using traditional grip with the left hand which came out of the jazz tradition going back to drummer boys during the Civil War who used it when Snare drums were slung at a 45 degree angle. Most rock guys don’t use it, but a few of my favorites do use it in rock. Steve Smith of Journey totally came out of a jazz background, Stewart Copeland of the Police and Neil Peart who actually changed from matched to traditional grip late in his career after working with a jazz teacher in order to revamp his technique. There are a lot of others, but on the whole most rock guys use matched grip of which there are many variations, but that’s a whole other conversation lol.
Good job guys. Supertramp is an all-time favorite. Especially early Supertramp. Too many great songs to list but a few are Crime of the Century, School, Fools Overture. Peace.
That saxophone always catches first time listeners off guard lol
These guys deserve to be in the Rock in Roll hall of fame
I had to go and look, that tells me the HOF is a sham.
Amen.
What their NOT! That’s the Crime of the Century!
Long time ago
Agreed 💯!!
Unbelievable 👍 good....and fun.
Oh fantastic song!
Epic song.
Favorite Supertramp piece
My favorite song is Goodbye Stranger.
Supertramp could do NO wrong in the 70's. So many amazing songs.
This was my first song explained and translated into spanish in the eighties...
Favorite Supertramp song is Long Way Home
‘Take The Long Way Home’ … you’ll love it.
Love this song!
Supertramp is Master Piece 😊 I do remember the first time I heard in the 70ths and I'm still love than 😊
Supertramp was, indeed, very big in Canada

The youngs guys descovering the best music from the past. The best musics.
You guys are hysterical! I love your commentary!
Oh ya, this album came out in my senior. Everyone was sing it.
The band of my 15's!
The "phone" sound was actually Coleco Football, a handheld game that was huge at the time.
Recommend Supertramp "Give a little bit"
Soundtrack of my teenage years. I was lucky...
The whole Breakfast in America album is amazing! Goodbye Stranger is the next track on the album. Recommend!
I have been whistling to that sax for about 35 years and I'll probably whistle to it till the day I die

Wow! From all of those, I just know how to play the woodblocks!! :-)
You have impressive knowledge of the instruments it makes me wonder if you are in a band?Supertramp are terrific, and as you say talented.
Next recommended Supertramp song:
“Bloody Well Right”
The piano solo intro is so sick that you’ll be replaying it in your heads the rest of the day.
Supertramp. One of the best bands ever. What great concerts
The Logical Song is a movie for the mind if you close your eyes and listen to the journey each instrument takes you on.
the sax is so f ing killer... can't overstate it
11 in 79. Love these guys.
Love this album ❤

Goodbye Stranger is a masterpiece, what a band
When I was a kid, this was a huge hit here in the USA. And yes, very quotable.
You missed a chance to begin your comment with “when I was young…” :)
Nice so talented, supertramp is awesome!!
Coincidentally, they have a song called “School” which was a popular FM song you can still hear on classic rock stations.
Yeah caught that too Mike! Lol
YES, Mike - this is my favorite by Supertramp! Hope they react to it :)
That song was played very little when album released. It built up a little steam with each passing year though.
School was the perfect song for audio store sound rooms. Just about everywhere you went that LP was in the premium listening room.
School was the first Supertramp song I ever listened to in 1975 and was hooked from there on. I also liked the Crisis What Crisis album which was overlooked by critics

Yeah that outro is great, and so is the one on Boston's "Hitch A Ride". Can't go wrong with either pick IMO.
Agreed its masterful
Crime of the Century albums School, Rudy, Crime of the Century, and yes, I'm from Canada and it was!
