Oh Michael McDonald the only voice on earth that sings high and deep at the same time. Never seen anything like it. I saw them all in concert in Florida before Michael left the band. Heard all the great songs!!! Love the Doobies
TheBrandon425 not exactly; if you listen closely, you can hear Micheal’s voice softly echoing throughout the room since his mouth is so close to the microphone. In addition, he sings certain verses at a different tempo and pitch than he did in the original studio recording, which further proves that he and the band are truly singing the song live. It only sounds like lip syncing at first because Michael is one of those rare artists who’s voice sounds just as good live as it does on the radio. True, lip syncing was used by some bands for select live TV performances back in those days, but they would still play their instruments regardless, and some bands would simply play live for real, even if they sounded different than in the studio. That technique was mostly used by artists who were unsure of the audience’s reaction to them actually playing live, so they would cheat with that, letting the recording cover their voices while they played their instruments live. Listen to this video and the original recoding side by side, and you’ll hear the differences which set them apart from each other.
This is Doobie Brothers 2.0. Their sound changed when McDonald joined in the late 70s. Try some earlier songs like China Grove, Listen to the Music, or Black Water.
To me, their best stuff, BY FAR are the whole Captain And Me Album, the whole What Once Were Habits Are Now Vices and the whole Stampede album. BY FAR the best!
Love Micheal McDonald. Two different styles of Doobie music, but still great sounds. No other group can claim having the distinction of pulling off that feat. I was living in the Bay when the original Doobies started and I'm a fan for life.
You can never turn your back on true classic unforgettable songs like this one. Myself personally, play this song every time I’m cleaning or cooking or sometimes both. I thank my mother for introducing this song to me, I just love it.
It was a big #1 hit for the Doobies in 1979. Written by Michael MDonald (and Kenny Loggins who is not in the group). Great lyrics. Michael McDonald was not the original lead singer of the group. He was brought in to replace singer Tom Johnston who was having health issues. Tom sang their earlier big songs like China Grove, Jesus Is Just Alright, Listen to the music. Eventually Tom came back and is still currently the lead singer of the group. They're about to play the New Orleans Jazz fest this month.
The doobies were around long before George micheals song.this song is a big piece of the fabric of my life for my early years.the doobies were big in high school.1972 to 1975 and their success continued long after. 3cheers from Canada
Hey, if he could be asked to play multiple times for those anal-retentive perfectionists Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, then rocket science is a walk in the park, lol.
I love Michael McDonald’s voice! He was with the Doobie Brothers before he went solo! I probably first heard it riding with my Dad! He loved all music from R&B to rock to county to gospel! ❤️❤️

Bless you in the name of Jesus too. I’ve been a musical old soul from birth, and this song hit the airwaves when I was 10 years old. I’m telling you I could not stop playing this record for such a long time. It just hit me so hard because I love beautiful, rhythmic melodies coupled with tight harmonies and few artists did it better than the Doobie Brothers, and Michael McDonald’s voice is just addictive. So, per your request, that’s my story. I also love that you are listening to music and posting it from a musician’s point of view. Keep it up.
Just 5 days ago I saw Michael McDonald in an outdoor venue on a blamy night in Seattle with my 44 yr. old son...it was fantastic. His voice is strong and intoxicating. He changed the Doobie Brothers sound when he joined (my son says they aren't the Doobie Brothers without him) I love both incarnations. Bravo to the old school video.
i believe was 5 years old when this song came out and it made me wonder what he was singing about. I would always sing along when it was on" typically back then" an am radio station. All i knew then about music was i loved it and that all kinds of it made me feel something. And this particular song at that young age just made me feel really good and happy for some reason. I can remember my mom in the kitchen cooking a big smelly boiling pot of collar greens with the radio on and that song was like sugar to this little boy back then running around the dining room and kitchen in circles singing it with all i had in cut off rustler shorts. Wow i am 51 now and life is so different. But about your channel. Very refreshing. Once again i am happy i discovered your channel but not just for these reaction videos, "yet it tends to keep me up binge watching two nights in a row now😁" but for all the other playlists as well. Some obviously i have not got to yet. I am looking forward to digging into all of it and was very excited to see you on the panel chat the other night. That's how i discovered your channel, and i hope to see you on them often. Brandon Derrick and ABL are my main news sources. I relate to truth and that is hard to find in mainstream media if at all. I appreciate what you are doing and how straight forward you are. Keep on keeping on. My mother introduced me to this song when I was 4, I was born in 75. God bless her for giving me the love for good music this is one if my all time favorite.
I was born in 1980 in Lakewood, Washington and this is the music I grew up with. Used to play on the radio all the time when I was a kid. I don't know why, maybe my Mon's influence, but stuff like Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, Lionel Ritchie, Billy Ocean, George Michael, etc. really struck me as the kinda music I would really gravitate towards. Music with soul, harmony, emotion...hard to explain. I love all different types of music from metal, hip hop, techno, soft rock, R&B, jazz...all kinds and from all different countries and artists. But this right here has always stuck with me as my preferred style that I keep going back to.
The Doobie Brothers are together again and are on tour. They will be in Saint Louis Aug. 13....cant wait to see them...first time in 25 years that they are touring together. Love their music.
Keep in mind this is a live performance, not a lip synch. And still not a single note or beat or harmony out of place. That's the kind of talent these guys had. Who on today's Billboard Top 100 comes close to that kind of musicianship?
I remember as clear as day when I first heard What a Fool Believes. I was on my way to an all girls slumber party sitting in the back of a station wagon that was turning onto Princess Anne Rd. in La Canada Flintridge. It was an exciting time & an exciting song. Very exhilarating & a feel good beat 🎵 As I got older, the song had more meaning as I disected the lyrics. It is a classic. 1978 offered up some fantastic music 👏
WOW! Love The Doobie Bros. My favorite song by them. Love Michael McDonalds unique voice. Was one of the songs choices on my personal list. Whoever requested this song Thank You!💯
Written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. They wrote 2 more songs, which ended up with Kenny Loggins singing lead vocal and releasing them under his name. Produced by Ted Templeman. Years later, he produced Sammy Hagar and Van Halen. MM also sang with Nicollette Larson, Steely Dan in the 1970s. In the 1980s, MM sang on solo albums and with Christopher Cross, late James Ingram, Patti Labelle and Toto. Not given much publicity. In 1983, Ted Templeman brought in MM to finish writing lyrics. The song was I'll Wait. the credits are as follows: "written by Van Halen and Michael McDonald". This was the lineup from 1978 to 1984: David Lee Roth, late Eddie van Halen, Alex van Halen and Michael Anthony.
The guitarist with the handlebar mustache is Jeff (Skunk) Baxter who played with many groups (Steele Dan , Dire Straights etc.) and has worked as a consultant for US. Defense . Love the Dooley Brothers all along. Listening, Dancing , Lyrics. Thanks for your videos. Be blest.☦️👩🏻🦳🐾🐾🇺🇸
Song was written by Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins in 1978. And if you don't know who Kenny Loggins is, hit one of his videos. Great rocker. Where was I when the song hit the radio waves? Stationed at Fort Carson turning wrenches on Chinook helicopters at Butts AAF. Doobies are one of my all time favorite bands. Their sound continued growing and moving in slightly different directions and they took chances. Great band.
The guitar player sitting down is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter from Steely Dan. He now works as a defense consultant and chaired a Congressional Advisory Board on missile defense.
I just stumbled upon this and I was a young woman when this came out. It was a monster hit for them but probably lead to McDonald moving on. They did one more album but then he went solo with great success in the 1980’s. Saw him a couple of years ago and he’s still got it. He was supposed to tour with The Doobie Brothers including Tom Johnston this summer but that is probably on hold now.
Everybody always says The Eagles had the best harmonies, but everybody always seem to sleep on the Doobie Brothers harmonies. Right up there with the Eagles!!!
I do like the earlier Doobie Brothers, but this song brings back some chill memories. I was four-ish and riding around with my parents all the time with this song. It reminds me of rain and windshield wipers.
I was a kid in the 70's on a carnival ride called the himalaya and this song came on along with another song called "Sara" by Fleetwood Mac and I was hooked!
When this song was released in 1979, it played on radio all day, every day for months and months and months. When Renaissance Man says that it's a song that we never get tired of hearing, he is right.
I remember playing GTA V running down citizens on the curbs and sidewalks while my radio was tuned into Los Santos Rock radio and this was playing. Good days
Michael McDonald's voice makes women go crazy. Amazing voice, talented man. He was a fantastic solo artist as well. With some of my faves "I keep forgetting" and "Sweet Freedom" love love love!!!
Merry Christmas! Michael McDonald had a unique voice. You could definitely pick him out of a crowd. This was played a lot while I was at Union before I transferred to Jackson State. Good memories.
I LOVE this song. Play it in the kitchen frequently. And I must confess, I have spent 40 YEARS trying to understand just what the lyrics are, and just what it's about . . . but it's embedded in my wiring just the same! : )
Michael McDonald is lead singer. But he was backup singer to gobs of artists. This run at the beginning was created by them but was repeated in new wave music and is in tons of songs. Michael is one of the best singer coming out of the 80’s.
The guitar player with the big mustache sitting, is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, he played with Steely Dan. Amazing guitar player. He now works for the American government's defense department.
Well, this song was released 4 years before I was born, so I don't really remember the first time I ever heard it, but I do remember always loving it. And although it's basically a "sad" song (about a man who is in love with and thinks he still has a shot with a woman who couldn't care less about him), it always makes me want to dance every time I hear it because the sound is just so damn catchy.
It took them a long time to record this. They almost hated playing it live. A lot of key and tempo changes, lots of instruments, and the harmonies were extremely difficult. Great video.
I have inside info about the guy in the front with the aviator sunglasses and headphones who's sitting with his guitar. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter had grown so tired of the commercial direction the Doobies were heading that he was basically checked out by this time. Skunk was not only refusing to play for this taping, he was actually listening to a Jazz record at the time. Pretty much the modern day equivalent of browsing soundcloud during class.
Just seeing MRM reaction when Michael McDonald starts singing is priceless, and this is what music should be about, regardless of who's singing, its got put a smile on your face. Thanks for sharing. cheers!
He is making me laugh early in the morning he’s cute, when they said the white man has the power, did you see the look on his face that was a trip. Everybody has the power. This guys going to make my day I’m going to laugh all day. 😂😂😂👍😂😂. You cool. 😎
This track came from the album Minuet by Minuet. What A Fool Believes won a Grammy for Song Of The Year in 1980. Check out Minuet by Minuet the title track
Michael McDonald changed the music for the Doobie Brothers. It took me a long time to like it. I'm older now and can appreciate the change but I still prefer the pre-McDonald Doobies.
This is the singer that sang the duet with Patti Labelle. “On My Own”. You did a reaction video to that song and you were quite impressed with Mike McDonald in that song.
Doobie brothers always had some great uplifting songs. There is no mistaking Michael McDonald's voice its so smooth.
This song is not uplifting. The music is, but the song is horribly sad.
His voice is EVERYTHANG
Seals and Crofts Summer Breeze ....always brings me back to the feeling of the 70's. Makes me feel fine .
Love that too

Michael still performs with other bands. I saw him perform with Toto a few years ago; they were all gr8 as always. :-)
You are oh so lucky!
@@sunshyne8539 thanks sunshine, yes I was. Unforgettable memories.
Ah the days before sampling, auto-tune, and songwriters who played instruments and performed their own songs without lip synch
Hans Gruber Yep when real talent emerged organically.
They still do that.

The irony being, they're lip synching to this!

Excellent Doobie Brothers song. Taking It To the Streets (also by the Doobie Brothers), also great
YAASS!!
We played that in high school band for pep rallies! 🤣
This is Doobie Brothers 2.0. Their sound changed when McDonald joined in the late 70s. Try some earlier songs like China Grove, Listen to the Music, or Black Water.
Tom Gibson also Long Train Running. I liked their earlier sound better when Tom Johnston was there instead of Michael McDonald.
I like both incarnations. The Rock bluesy folk beginning and the rnb soul later version.
To me, their best stuff, BY FAR are the whole Captain And Me Album, the whole What Once Were Habits Are Now Vices and the whole Stampede album. BY FAR the best!
I like both. Just like Airplane and Starship, etc. I like all of their iterations.

This song received Grammy Awards in 1980 for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Great tune with great lyrics.
This is the guy you though was black singing with Patti Labella
I recommend two pre-Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers songs: "Black Water" (No. 1) and "Listen to the Music" (No. 11).
Those were my favorites as well. I'm just not a big fan of MM.
Marcus Oh-really-us Yes, those are good. I never understood why they let him sing!
Listen to the music is my all time fav doobies song!!!
Tom Johnston is the best doobies singer, but MM ain't bad!!
Clear as the driven snow and South City Midnight Lady are my all time favorites.

"Minute By Minute". Close your eyes until you hear Michael's voice. 😁
Wow. I just saw Skunk Baxter also here! That guy is so versatile. Bongos. Missile defense expert. Guitar. It’s just wherever the day takes him. Lol

"China Grove" for the licks!

"What A Fool Believes"
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool don't see
Tryin' hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life
She musters a smile
For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize
It never really was
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him...
Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
Someday, somewhere, she will return
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
There's nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees...

Michael McDonald's voice makes women go crazy. Amazing voice, talented man. He was a fantastic solo artist as well. With some of my faves "I keep forgetting" and "Sweet Freedom" love love love!!!
One of the great rock groups in history....a travesty they are not in the Hall of Fame...all because of the name.
Well you're in luck, they up for nomination and look pretty good!
They got in ...May 2020 don't know if delayed due to the coronavirus.
Merry Christmas! Michael McDonald had a unique voice. You could definitely pick him out of a crowd. This was played a lot while I was at Union before I transferred to Jackson State. Good memories.
This song won a Grammy for song of the Year in 1978. Great song.
I was 8 when this song was popular. I liked it. It was comforting. I had a messed up family life at the time and this was a song that made me smile
OUTSTANDING... going to see these guys july 18 2020, London Ontario.. with Michael McDonald 👍👍 totally excited...
i think it's cancelled now.
@@cameranmanner4701 im pretty sure ... was going to see zz top may 16th as well... no full events will happen this yr..
It was a staple on 70's and early 80's radio & variety shows when I was a kid. I still appreciate the band's vocals.
Music has a way of collapsing time and space. I appreciate how wonderfully you are amazed by that.
You have to try Black Waters by the Doobie brothers. Love that song reminds me of my childhood.
Modern Renaissance Man...love the Bass Guitars in the background....
The guitar player with the big mustache sitting, is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, he played with Steely Dan. Amazing guitar player. He now works for the American government's defense department.
I really enjoy the variety of music that you review. Great channel!
They were nominated for a Grammy award for this song.
I remember this from my childhood in the ‘70s; something about those chord progressions just made me happy, and still does! 🙏🏻✌🏻❤️🌈
One of those songs that gets better and better the more you hear it and fully listen to the lyrics
Love the Doobie Brothers! Great music. Crazy fantastic vocals!
Solid band, solid tune ..
This is a classic! Love the Doobs
This tune won Grammy's for song and record of the year in 1978.
I love this tune from Michael McDonald, man. And, I love your videos. Greetings from the Philippines. Much love!
Thanks for sharing. cheers!
No problem!
@@Modern-Renaissance-Man Have you ever done any of Gordon Lightfoot's music? He was great.
Adore Michael McDonald!! This particular song is the best to me. Love the Doobie Brothers. Just fab!!
He is making me laugh early in the morning he’s cute, when they said the white man has the power, did you see the look on his face that was a trip. Everybody has the power. This guys going to make my day I’m going to laugh all day. 😂😂😂👍😂😂. You cool. 😎
They never it say the wise man has the power
Listen to the song properly
One of my ALL TIME favorites!!!
The studio recording of this is probably the one to hear. Still amazing that they could do it live, but...
Thank you, Ty! Great memories of time at the beach. Love, Pam & LoLa
❤️🐾❤️
This track came from the album Minuet by Minuet. What A Fool Believes won a Grammy for Song Of The Year in 1980. Check out Minuet by Minuet the title track
Michael McDonald changed the music for the Doobie Brothers. It took me a long time to like it. I'm older now and can appreciate the change but I still prefer the pre-McDonald Doobies.
This is the singer that sang the duet with Patti Labelle. “On My Own”. You did a reaction video to that song and you were quite impressed with Mike McDonald in that song.
