I loved that Nick pointed out how close this is to Steely Dan. Two members of The Doobie Brothers recorded with Steely Dan. Michael McDonald did some backing vocals for them and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was an actual member of Steely Dan on their first few albums. Also, I think there was just a sound several groups latched onto back around that time. So much good music. Both Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers were the soundtracks to my childhood. It’s always great to know people are keeping this music alive and introducing younger generations to it. So cool!

Prepare yourselves for quite the rabbit hole with The Doobie Brothers. Be aware tha Michael McDonald joined the group on the album "Taking It To The Streets". He replaced front man Tom Johnston who burned out in the middle of touring. They had already established themselves as rock stars with their primarily guitar driven blues/funk/southern rock sound. When Michael joined them with his voice and piano based music, the bands sound transformed. Both versions of the band created legendary music.

Michael McDonald is the vocalist and you hear his high harmonies in “Peg” and other Steely Dan songs. Plus, he shares the stage with Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs in that DVD I sent you called “The Dukes of September.” They take turns doing each other’s songs. They do “Peg” and “What a Fool Believes.” So you have it live. Of course, the guys are older (it’s from 2012, I think) but they sound pretty good (not at their peak, but pretty good). It is amazing that during this period of time the good bands went through major changes in style. Before Michael McDonald became the lead, the Doobie's were more bluesy. The original lead was Tom Johnston 1970-1975 with an amazing bluesy voice. Mc Donald, also an amazing voice, stepped in from Steely Dan from 1975 to present. Black Water, great song, was sung my Johnston. An AMAZING band, maybe McDonald would sound a little like the Bee Gees, maybe. I grew up on the Doobie's and never thought of the Bee Gee's. To me the BG were in the Disco vibe, the Doobie's never had that vibe...Bluesy Rock. Both McDonald and Johnston had amazing voices, different, but great! A new Rabbit Hole for you! This cut is off the Doobie Bros "Minute by Minute" album, which is a gem, top to bottom. They started out as very Southern rock, and did very well there. But then they took Michael McDonald on and their scope broadened dramatically. Seriously, a very worthy album for your review.

AND they had a terrific lead singer in Patrick Simmons. And he's dynamite, truly. But all those vocals - when you say "all six could be singing on this"... it's ALL Michael McDonald. And that's the most obvious link back to Steely Dan because he was arguably the best studio vocalist of his time. I was about 18 when I first tried singing along with McDonald vocals - DON'T DO IT! He's a freak of nature, and mere mortals could seriously hurt themselves trying to mimic him. With all that shade and tone and hue in his voice, no one realizes t just how high those lines go.

We didn't realize how spoiled we were with 70's music. Pop jem after rock classic after prog mindblowing. Radio used to be so awesome and wide ranging. And then the 80's signalled the anything goes spirit too! No wonder music is so important to me. Some of the songs you kids play (like this one) I haven't heard for soooo long. In my mind I hear the vinyl noise along with the tune!
As others have commented, a strong connection with the Doobies and the Dan, and the earlier Tom Johnston D Bros are also great. (Black Water & Long Train Runnin & more). Yep, Lex, you were on target with your memory of Black Water. I'd love a reaction to it. 😃

we took all the great music of the 70s for granted, but the first awakening came already in the 80s, which many people think were great - not for me, all this Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and others plus the stupid stuff, that was produced in Germany, wasn't mine. I'm glad I already had Rush (just discovered in 1980) and Maiden and I also listened to many american bands as Nightranger, 38 Special, Sammy Hagar, but also "older bands" as Kansas, Heart and at the end of the decade came Dream Theater and I was saved :-) In the 90s I didn't buy many CDs, but I bought Cycles, which I liked a lot and Brotherhood, which was ok, after that I lost track of the Doobies

Michael McDonald gets lumped into the "Blue Eyed Soul" genre (with fellow vocalists Rod Stewart, Daryl Hall, and Steve Winwood not bad company to keep)! The Doobie Brothers go much deeper! McDonald stepped in for original lead singer Tom Johnston after health issues bounced him from the group threatening to break the lineup completely apart. Nice save! The production quality of these guys and their contemporaries that you are covering are what truly separates them. And along with their willingness to step outside the box of creative rules, defined the popular music landscape of 70's rock. A rabbit hole lined with silk (much more comfortable than if it were lined with gold)! Oh, and definitely check out the Doobie's Live! They always get the crowd rocking!!!!

This is the second time I've watched this reaction and it's probably my favourite since I've started watching you. You've explained before about how you react, almost apologising for it. But that's what makes it so great, you can see you really 'feel' it. You couldn't have picked a better song Nick, it's bulletproof. I'm sure you picked up Michael McDonalds vocals on Peg. There was a programme about Yacht Rock on BBC4 a while back. It was presented by Kate Puckrick who was a presenter of 'yoof' programmes in the 90's in the UK. It featured the usual suspects, Chris Cross, Toto, Doobie Brothers. Also discussed whether Steely Dan were, personally I think Dan were too diverse to be pinned down to one genre. Anyway this was picked as a prime example, the 'Doobie bounce'. When that chorus hits it's irresistible. I always get the same feeling from the Eagles, One Of These Nights, another brilliant pop/rock song with brilliant backing vocals.

I just like the sound of the band before MM.

Unbelievable talent. You might’ve said it but you ought to do some full album reactions for the DB’s! Their early stuff is really incredible and iconic.

The Doobie Bros are a great band with a good line of albums starting in 1972 , just like Steely Dans first one coincidentally .. There is the Tom Johnston era and then Michael McDonald era and most fans do lean to the original line up as being the best but the McDonald songs get better over time also .. Go back to the beginning and go up from that point ..''''Listen To the Music'''' is their very first hit and a big hit from their very first album and then check out The Captain and Me album 1973

The Doobies are essentially two bands. Tom Johnston was their original front man. While he also has a very soulful voice, his musical style was much more rock. When Michael McDonald took over the band changed over to a pop/R & B feel. If you want a complete contact, listen to Listen to the Music or China Grove, two of their earlier songs. A real different sound.

Just like Steely Dan (and Chicago), late seventies Doobie Brothers stuff like this is very different from early seventies Doobie Brothers. Both are very good, but it's almost like two different bands sometimes. And yeah, this 1979 song sounds a lot like 1977 Steely Dan, mainly because both bands were following the musical trends of the time. (As I write this, I'm remembering that in the seventies we called them "groups," not bands.)

So much to choose from with The Doobie Brothers. I prefer the earlier stuff a bit more myself. "Another Park Another Sunday", "Take Me In Your Arms", "Long Train Running", "South City Midnight Blues", "Ukiah", (South City and Ukiah are two cities in Northern California), and their take on "Jesus Is Just Alright" is a MUST listen. They started out as a biker-band in San Jose and the Santa Cruz mountains and slowing went more mainstream. Have a wonderful day!

Ha! This band has 3 guitarists - including Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter, who was the lead guitarist on Steely Dan’s Haitian Divorce - and the main vocal in this song is Mike McDonald, also a vocalist for the Dan… most noteworthy in Peg.
There were 2 versions of the Doobies - pre McDonald & with McDonald. Many big hits during both eras - more guitar-based before… and more keys w/Mike.
    Pre-Mike songs:
    Black Water is awesome!
    China Grove
    Long Train Runnin’
    Another Park, Another Sunday
    Listen to the Music
    South City Midnite Lady
    Jesus is Just Alright
    More McDonald songs:
    Minute by Minute
    Takin’ It to the Streets
    One Step Closer
    Dependin’ on You

Michael McDonald co-wrote this with Kenny Loggins, who did a nice solo version of this on his solo album (I love the few albums he did with Jimmy Messina - 70s country pop rock of a high caliber). A fun little Donald Fagen/Michael McDonald collaboration is the live “New York Rock & Soul Revue”, which they did at the Beacon, along with a bunch of others including the great Charles Brown, Phoebe Snow, Boz Skaggs, and the Brigati brothers from the Rascals. They do a bunch of classic soul number and some Steely Dan numbers, too. Fun fun fun.

Steely Dan is my favourite US band. The Doobies are my second. This is from the Mike McDonald era of the band, when Tom Johnston took a hiatus. I prefer the pre-Mike era if I'm honest. The albums 'Captain and Me' and 'Stampede' are stunning pieces of work. The combination of the rock (Tommy Johnston ) and country (Pat Simmonds) is an irresistable fusion. I'd recmmend a tune called 'Clear as the Driven Snow' to give you a feel for their excellence. It's not one of their huge hits but it is a wonderful song. These days the Doobies have returned to their Rock/Country style although their recent 50th Anniversary tour included Mike McD. The Doobies are one of the great live acts.
