You guys are so entertaining. FYI the singer song writer here is Pat Simmons. He as well as Tom Johnston, both guitar players, write and sing. Their music is so versatile. Long train running is a great one to get your reaction to. BTW Pat and Tom are Doobie founding members. MM filled in for awhile during Tom Johnston’s temporary leave of absence. They still tour today. Another rabbit hole??
Yeah, Patrick Simmons dominated the early hits, McDonald the latter half of the DB tenure. Seems one of the few bands where their fans accept two lead singers with equal gratitude
Saw them in 2011 and is still the most entertaining show I have been to. When they had done a few encores people began leaving but we noticed that the Doobies were hanging around the side of the stage, slightly out of sight. So we went up and they were waiting to talk to anyone who came up to them. Amazing guys and great fun to listen to. No pretensions at all, just loved being appreciated.
Yeah, that's the thing about this era of the Doobies. Sounded great when I was 15. Still good, but not epic. Black Water and I Cheat the Hangman are my favorites from this period.
Great reveal! The Doobies did not become famous when Michael McDonald joined the band. They were already huge, with multiple hit songs, including this one, which is more swampy than their other early hits. You should definitely react to more of the same, like "Listen To the Music" "China Grove" "Jesus Is Just Alright" or "Long Train Running," all classic Doobies.
LOL! I chuckled when Nick said "It sounds nothing like the Doobie Brothers." Since Michael McDonald came later many people at the time thought he sounded nothing like the Doobie Brothers. Both are great, but the Tom Johnston era is more rocking which is my favorite. When I was a kid my dad played the Doobie's album "The Captain & Me" all the time and I still enjoy it. Thanks for the reaction, Nick N Lex. I don't have time to comment a lot these days, but I still check out your channel when you post because you're a great reaction team. Keep rockin'!
Great reaction!! You both really make these “ first hearings” so much fun! For those of us old-timers to hear these great hits from our youth through your ears is a real treat!! Keep up the great service. Been a fan since you both started the YT channel a couple years ago.
The band at this time consisted of Tom Johnston: guitar, Pat Simmons: guitar, Tiran Porter: bass, John Hartman, drums, and Michael Hossack: drums (yes, the Doobies had two drummers!!). Two additional musicians who worked on this album would later become full-fledged members: Keith Knudsen and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter(who was formerly of Steely Dan).
It's so cool watching people discovering this music for the first time. I've been listening to the Doobies since their first radio hit which was Listen To The Music (ironic) in 70 or 71 and I loved them from the start. They have gone through many changes since their first lineup but many of the original members are still around. You really need to go back to the beginning because through all the changes the music has maintained a high level and all these songs that I've heard a million times on the radio still sound as fresh today as they did 50 years ago.
This is before Michael McDonald, put Pat Simmons is singing most of this song who was still in the band after Michael Mcdonald joined. Tom Johnson did most of the lead vocals before he left and Michael joined. Current the band is doing show with both Tom and Michael. A friend saw them in Vegas last week.
This is Patrick Simmons the lead guitar singing. Their main vocalist back then was Tom Johnston guitarist Tom Johnston left the band for awhile but it was really that Michael McDonald joined the band more than anyone leaving
Pre-Michael Doobies is the *best* Doobies by far, imo... and not just because I'm not a Michael McDonald fan. I just personally love their older style. Listen to the Music Long Train Runnin' China Grove Rockin' Down the Highway ...and the list goes on.
The Doobie brothers were born without Michael, but he gave them a new sound, a new vision of music. With or without Michael, the doobie brothers are amazing!
I never adjusted to McDonald doing the singing for the Doobies. It was a huge change in tone, going from rural music to a guy most comfortable with blue-eyed soul music. Little Rive Band was a great guess.
Sooo Fun! Great guesses! Now, the "before Michael" rabbit hole. I'm going to give you tunes others might not...."Without You," "Eyes of Silver," "Road Angel," "Another Lonely Park, Another Sunday"....dang soooo many and not counting the massive hits!
Ha! I JUST wrote that in my comment! :D That was me and a bus load of kids in Louisiana 1975, singing the last verse/chorus harmony on our way to school or home :D.
Great visual. This was my mom's favorite song. Was on the radio constantly, lucky for her! Great song. They had so many pre and with MM. Love him and Doobies. Have seen them a number of times!
Next up - The classic Doobie Brothers sound was established on the songs Long Train Running and Listen To The Music. These are the songs that founded The Doobie Brothers as a mega band. The harmonies and musicianship shine through and the Doobie's signature sound was established.
Michael McDonald took over when Tom Johnston got sick when they were on tour . Two camps for the band. Personally I like them both. They are different but they both so good.
If you want classic Doobie Brothers, listen to Long Train Running, China Grove, Listen to the Music... just for starters. You'll love that time for the band.
Saw them in 1974 when this album was released. I was a young lad of 16. Years later I had pulled my camping trailer into a remote campground in Oklahoma. Behind the counter was a gold record on the wall. The lady checking us in said her husband had been road manager for Doobie Brothers when this album was released.
This was very commercial for 1974 when it came out. Doobies started off as northern California biker band and the Hells Angels loved them. Michael Mcdonald came in and turned the band more towards r&b but they had huge hits before Mcdonald ever came into the band. China Grove has one of the best riffs ever recorded to 24 track tape
I Cheat the Hangman. Haunting riff on that song. But yeah, the Doobies were a bluesy biker band...before their soul/R&B/fusion period. Livin' on the Fault Line is a really overlooked album. Chinatown and the title track are ridiculously good.
Another great song by the Doobies that was sung primarily by Pat Simmons was "Toulouse Street" from the same titled album. I bought the single of "Listen to the Music" & I believe "Toulouse Street" was the "B" side, and I fell in love with that song.
I believe the Doobies are now touring with both Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald, and Patrick Simmons of course, who wrote and sang on this. I believe Tom left in the late 70's for personal and health reasons but returned when Michael left for a solo career.
This video was so cool. You both are so fun to watch! Love the song ! Had no idea it was the Doobie brothers. But heard countless times growing up. Glad to see you Lex! Nick i do enjoy the metal reactions a lot but i miss the two of you together and your reactions! Fun song and glad Lex hid it who the band was! Love you guys! Have a good rest of your week!
The Doobies has many hits prior to Michael. A lot of people really reacted negatively to the introduction of Michael McDonald. I'd say both lineups were great in different ways, unlike Chicago, which became schlockmeisters after Kath.
Lol!! “schlockmeisters”. Pretty harsh. True, Chicago did become rather sappy following Terry Kath’s death. My biggest complaint about post - Kath Chicago is the horns were not as prominent during Bill Champlin era. Peter Cetera leaving the group in ‘85 to go solo was a major setback, as bassist Jason Scheff is very good but very different than Pete.
That was fun watching Nick try to guess. The Doobie Brothers music before Mike Mc is a whole different animal. And that tune is different than their other great music. Very versatile band. Compare the songs Rocking Down the Highway, or Long Train Running style to Cheat the Hangman or Toulouse Street and you'll understand. Black Water is from my favorite album What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and it doesn't sound anything like the other songs on it. Song to See You Through is my favorite track.
My vote goes to Doobie Bros before McDonald. This song has such good memories attached to it every time I hear, it makes me smile. I love your reactions... new sub after just seeing this first one.. !!!
Tricky. That is one of their most "southern band" sounding songs. I was fortunate to have grown up in the SF Bay area, when the Doobie Brothers came from. Pat Simmons went to nearby Leigh High School and I had a roomate that played in a band while in high school with him. I used to hang out in a friends used record store (where I bought my first Genesis album) and Ty Porter (the bass player for the Doobies Brothers) used to come in quite often.
That whole album is great probably my Favorite before Michael McDonald joined the band. Another Park Another Sunday, Daughter’s of the Sea, Eyes of Silver give you quite a taste of the variety they always brought to the table.
Ah I needed this one today, had a lingering bad mood from an aggravating conversation hours ago, and the song tore a bunch of it away - Used to hear it on classic rock and oldies stations all the time but it's got to have been a few years. This is the first I've ever heard a reactor mention Little Feat - their "Waiting For Columbus" double-live album has been a favorite for... damn, 30 years. Guess I'm off to search the channel and see what you've done of theirs.
Jeff Baxter played pedal steel on the album/song during his transition from Steely Dan to the Doobie Bros. This is the best of the non-Michael McDonald stuff along with I Cheat the Hangman.
It's interesting that Nick guessed Little Feat. That last time I saw The Doobie Brothers live, in 2019, Bill Payne was the keyboard player for them. As some fans know, Payne was the keyboard player for Little Feat. Actually, this was one the styles that the Doobies had developed pre-McDonald. This was one of their biggest selling singles prior to him joining the band.
That was fun, and Nick, those were some great guesses. Great idea, Alexa. I would've been shocked if he figured it out, but the moment you said "different vocalist", he figured it out, lol. Love that : )
This was actually one of their two lead vocalists from that era. Tom Johnston is the one on most of their older hits liek China Grove, Long Train Runnin', Listen to the Music, etc., but this was Patrick Simmons, and this was the one big hit he sang on. He sang on a lot more, but this is the big one. Tom Johnston left and was replaced by McDonald in '76, but Simmons remained in the band until they disbanded in '82.
You didn't grow up with the Doobies like us old farts. If you did you'd know Pat Simmons voice in a second. This was very entertaining!! Please do more like this! Thank you. PJ 🥰
And then Steely Dan's debut album did not have Michael McDonald in the group.....but when Michael joined the band....the sound of Steely Dan change to a really R & B/Soul music vibe.....Michael brings a soulful/Black Gospel Church Flavor to their music or any band he joins. Hahahahahaha.....lol.....hahahaha.........I want you guys react to "Diamond" by The Doobie Brothers.....it is Fire!!!! I am not going to say anything more but it is a surprise!!!
10:04 Nick doing the Swedish Chef from the Muppets doing Michael McDonald!?😂👌👍❤️ Would love to see You guys react to the scene in 40 year old virgin with Michael McD’s on the TVs in the stereo store! 🤣
This was so much fun, watching y'all play this game! This is a game I've been playing off and on for most of my adult life! I LOVE turning people on to music they've never heard, and getting their reactions when they are thrown a curve like with this amazing song! Great song, great reaction! Thank you, guys!
I'd recommend a dive into their 1972 album, Toulouse Street. Original Steely Dan guitarist Skunk Baxter joined the Doobies in 1974 and Michael McDonald joined in 1975.
You two are so much fun, and share so much info along the fun way. Me and three high school friends sang this in four part harmony driving to school every day for a year.
The Doobies and Chicago (there are probably more ?) are two super bands that had "two " runs with two different before and after sounds...all good :) Peace and love
I've seen these guys 20+ times since the mid 70's and every lineup has produced great music! Being a "Doobie Brother" truly means brother! Members have left & returned several times for various reasons and welcomed back. They have allot of hits, but the best stuff comes from the deeper cuts. Black Water is a bit of an anomaly as far as their sound, so you should really check out some of their more progressive stuff and yes, some of it is with MM. Songs like Livin On The Fault Line, For Someone Special, Rio and others that everyone here are mentioning. Love your guys reactions and taste of great music!
“Pure as the Driven Snow” is another amazing Doobie song.
You guys are so entertaining. FYI the singer song writer here is Pat Simmons. He as well as Tom Johnston, both guitar players, write and sing. Their music is so versatile. I like Pat’s song called Depending on You
Yeah, Patrick Simmons dominated the early hits, McDonald the latter half of the DB tenure. Seems one of the few bands where their fans accept two lead singers with equal gratitude

The Doobies (both versions) and Steely Dan.......WOW ! the material that keeps on giving !
Ahhh, to be in high school in the 70's, a magical time. Lucky enough to see them in concert back then.
Ditto here. Well said.
Yeah, that's the thing about this era of the Doobies. Sounded great when I was 15. Still good, but not epic. Black Water and I Cheat the Hangman are my favorites from this period.
'That 70's show' was like going directly back in time to my life script! Never got to see them, but they played a big part of my ''soundtrack'! 🌝
This is 70s gold platinum. Such a classic sound.
There are lots of great pre-Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers' songs. You guys are into a treat as you explore that era of their music.

Bill Payne of Little Feat played keyboards with the Doobie Brothers as a session musician and sometimes with the touring band.
We were at a friends house after school and he played this album. It had just come out and been a fan ever since.✌️
What a gem ! It’s Cajun style.
Alexa, I love the way you sing song. ❤️😋 Doobie Brothers rock in all incarnations.
This is the voice we are
Use to such a great song!!!! Tjis was alot of fun u two

"Clear as the Driven Snow" is a deep cut, but it will take you on a JOURNEY and is not to be missed.
This song is great to sing along with.

Very Hypnotic song
