Its one of THE hardest drum grooves to play correctly! Drummers like me LITERALLY judge eachothers skill levels on "Yeah... but can you play 'Roseanna' correctly?!?!" 💯😎

    • @anony_meows

jeff porcaro was one in a billion kind of drummer. the rosanna beat is easy, but giving it life like how jeff played it? hardest thing to do, and that's the mystery. because this is the one song can easily felt really off without jeff's feel, even if the drummer played all the correct notes.

However Wrecking Crew was a studio ensemble, while Toto was a group of studio musicians who decided to form a decent band. However they did continue parallel studio career as well. One early example of Jeff Porcaro on drums would be Leo Sayer song "When I Need You". Lee Ritenour's piece "Mr. Briefcase" has Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate on it. Steve Lukather, the lead guitarrist and second vocalist of Toto has played guitar as a session musician for some of the biggest hits of the past. A few artists he played with Michael Jackson (Beat it, Billie Jean etc.), Lionel Ritchie (Running With the Night), Donna Summer (She Works Hard for the Money), Chicago (Hard Habit to Break), Richard Marx(Repeat Offender), George Benson (Give Me the Night), Elton John (I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That), Paul McCartney (No More Lonely Nights) and many many more. Not only did he play on these, but he also produced music and wrote for a lot of these and other artists. Chances are, if it was a hit in the 80s, Steve was playing on it.

This video inspired Michael Jackson to make his Beat It video in the same "West Side Story" style. (Side Note. Guitarist Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro of Toto play on Beat It and a few other tracks from Thriller. Keyboardist David Paich and Steve Porcaro are also on the Thriller album.)
Cynthia Rhodes, who plays Rosanna in the video was in the movie Dirty Dancing and is joined by actor Patrick Swayze who is seen as one of the male background dancers in the red jacket.
The song is about actress Rosanna Arquette who was dating Steve Porcaro at the time.
The song peaked at #2 for five weeks in 1982.
The song was from the album Toto IV, which went Triple Platinum-certified.
As individuals, the band members’ performances can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a HALF A BILLION albums.

Great reaction guys...well 2 out of 3 anyway. Fun fact #1: MJ liked this video enough to borrow the theme for Beat It. #2: Patrick Swayze was one of the dancers.

The woman in the video - Cynthia Rhodes (born November 21, 1956) is a retired American actress, singer and dancer. Her film roles include Tina Tech in Flashdance (1983), Jackie in Staying Alive (1983), officer Karen Thompson in Runaway (1984), and Penny in Dirty Dancing (1987).

This song, believed to be written about the actress Rosanna Arquette, is one of two chart-toppers supposedly inspired by her. The other is "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel.

Toto was formed of LA studio musicians who made hundreds of hits for others, who hung out their own shingle. Just for a start, check out "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs, an all-time GOAT groove, featuring half of Toto. Then consider that Jeff Porcaro (drums) and Steve Lukather (guitar) played on Michael Jackson's"Beat It." Yeah. They're THOSE dudes.

A little more than a year ago, I put together the pieces of an incredibly intricate web surrounding this song...
    The dancer is Cynthia Rhodes.
She played Penny in 'Dirty Dancing'.
The song is about actress Rosanna Arquette who not only WAS a dancer, but appears in Pulp Fiction as drug dealer Lance's pierced girlfriend.
When u connect Penny's post abortion condition to Uma Thurman's Overdose condition on Lance's floor, then link the Pulp soundtrack cut 'Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon' to Dirty Dancing character 'Baby' who basically grew up in that film witnessing those crazy events, the Pulp Fiction dance between Travolta and Thurman matches Baby and Johnny's 'Time of My Life' finale.
    It's all connected.
