Artistry is one of the most important things in the world because it lifts us all! There are so many amazing artists who have touched millions & your father is one of them.❤❤❤
A little bit of trivia...the video for the song has a "West Side Story" theme. The dancer in the red dress was Penny in "Dirty Dancing". Patrick Swayze also was one of the un-credited dancers in the video.
The outro was the result of them keeping the tape rolling at the end of the song and the band just jamming out. Steve Lukather's guitar solo in that outro is one of my favorites. The guy is insanely good, a really nice guy and funny as hell.
@@alansmith7626 Yeah, I think about that interview every time I hear one of his/Toto's songs now. Rick Beato is an amazing interviewer. The interviews he's doing with the legends of music is like a history channel of music. His interview with Sting, Bernard Purdie, Brian May, Larry Carlton, Peter Frampton, Pat Metheny... this list goes on. So glad that history is being preserved.
Well, "Luke" can sometimes be full of himself but he's still very sympathetic at the same time. Had problems with his wife and partying but he's carried on. One of the best guitar players back in the day with rocking and jazzy licks. Just iconic. The drums/groove, the vocals, Dave's piano, Steve's guitar and so many different elements.
Steve didn't know David would take off with that stride piano at the end of the take. Steve just improvised over it. After the take, Steve and David asked the control room "did you get all that?" Producer said "every note". By the way, this was take TWO. Easy as pie when you have all the talent in the world.
70s kid here. I'm announcing that because. What I'm about to say. Has been uttered in some form, by past generations. For the first time. Not only were most of these guys on Boz Scaggs “Silk Degrees” same ones played on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. Even after winning Grammy’s doing their own music they still played on other superstars albums. 🤯
When this song came out I was working in a mall in San Antonio Texas and across the mall was a sound store. And they would play this song over and over and I loved every time they played it. And they would crank it too. Great memories.

That great Porcaro 1/2 time shuffle. Steve's keyboards in the middle and Lukather with that out solo. Then if you watch the video, you get Cynthia Rhodes. Unbelievable song.
Check out Toto's song Hydra (prog rock/cinematic rock) from their second album Hydra. Perfect to listen to with headphones. There's a lot going on musically and listen carefully to the beginning...maybe even turn up the volume for the first 33 seconds. It sets the tone for the song with very cinematic synths and sound effects of water dripping and a dragon's breath. I know that may sound nerdy, but it is a great song. Written by the entire band and features a bit of everything you love about Toto.
The famous Jeff Porcaro "Rosanna shuffle" beat. The amazing drummer perfectly gels with the rest of the band on this song. If you want some of the newer side of Toto, take a listen to anything on either the "Mindfields" or "Falling in Between" albums. Rock music at its finest. Love that you're getting into Toto.
It's actually "The Purdie Shuffle" by Bernard Purdie. John Bonham uses it in "Fool In The Rain", which inspired Porcaro who then discovered its origin.
Yes it's definitely the Bernard "Pretty" Purdie shuffle. 83 years old. An amazing influential drummer who has played on countless recordings and with numerous artists. Check him out.

Guys, an important note: Steve Lukather sings the verses flowing around G major, but then all the transition hooks up high to F major are sung by Bobby Kimball, who truly made the vocals so memorable, in my opinion. That being said, Toto is a band's band. No one was better in that era musically than these guys.
My grandma was a Roseanna. Her mother was Italian her father Scottish Irish. I love Scotland and would die for her . But I’ve got an emotional connection to Greece, through perhaps Roseanna’s mixed ancestry.

Another song by Toto to check out is "99" from their 1979 album Hydra. It was one of my radio faves that winter - hearing it *always* takes me back (just like "Rosanna" in the summer of ‘82 and "Africa" in the spring of ‘83).
"I'll Supply The Love" reached #45 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1979. I hope you guys do "99" and "Without Your Love." They're more ballad like but I think you'll really enjoy them.
Actually, Steve Lukather is the one singing and playing guitar in the beginning. Not Steve Porcaro. Steve porcaro played synthesizer, and did some backing vocals. But Steve Lukather did the lead vocals.
Oh my goodness 😳 I loved this so much. I didn't realize just how great this song really is. I definitely slept on this one. I'm with you guys, I ❤ Toto and their amazing artistry. Please don't tell me that y'all don't know Rosanna Arquette with Madonna in "Desperately Seeking Susan" 1985. The entirety of the Arquette family are in the Entertainment Industry. David is one of the brothers, well known, whom was married to "Friends" alum Courteney Cox Then there is also the other living sister, Patricia, a very noteworthy television actress and Academy Award winner. I just remember when this song came out and hit the radio waves it was a nonstop talk all about the song that Toto wrote for that famous girl~ Rosanna! If I recall correctly, somewhere down along the line I'm not sure if it came directly from Rosanna or from one of the guys in the band, but someone said that she did inspire them with the name title, however not the lyrics. I believe she broke up with the band member shortly after the release. I dig your reaction guys~ oh those faces! 👍 😊
Africa was a HUGE song. In that year’s Grammy Awards Toto opened the show with a live version of it. Toto couldn’t physically be at the show so it was fixed for them to perform from wherever they were on tour. It was that huge. I’m sure it won at least one Grammy also. I could be wrong on that but I don’t think so. Try Asia! Great great band formed when Toto broke up.

Top 10 drum into, and fills. Awesome song.
Love, love your reaction.
I was rocking and dancing along with you guys. Great musicians! This song is fire!!!
Agree with you guys: this has always been my favorite song by them. Super talented band.
I dont think Toto ever broke up?
Great memories. My first son was born in 1982. This song still gets me.
Hi, Guys! Hi, from the Bahamas! Try "Rosana: 40 Tours Around The Sun", Also by ToTo! It is one of the best live versions of this song!!! " Africa " also, same live concert!
God Bless!
Without your Love, I’ll be Over you and I Won’t Hold you Back - great Love songs with Steve Lukather on lead vocals - worth a listen.
I was a college junior when this came out. Good stuff!
