Tudor Black Bay 58 925: What’s The Tarnish Like After 1+ Years? And Am I Saying Goodbye To It?

  • Опубликовано: 14 авг 2024
  • The Tudor Black Bay 58 is one of the most popular watches out there because there is just something so appealing about a good solid 39mm classically designed dive watch with design cues from Rolex Submariners of old. Tudor has made a note of the popularity and they have put out a great selection of BB58s.Last year, 2021, Tudor released some very curious BB58s including one in solid yellow gold and then perhaps the most interesting the BB58 925 in Sterling Silver. We know that tarnishing is an intrinsic part of anything silver but Tudor claimed that it had created a silver alloy that would not change “nope not in a million years.” Turns out that was not the case as my watch tarnished and many others reported tarnishing as well.
So in this video I will recap my BB58 925’s tarnish journey alongside the many tarnish tests i conducted over the course of nearly 1.5 years of ownership. Then I will give a final update on what the tarnish looks like right now 8 months after the last major test and update. Do you like the look? Let me know!
If you would like to buy my BB58 925 ($3450) or my BB58 Blue ($2950) with free shipping in the continental US, please email me at thewatchidiot@gmail.com with your shipping zip code so that I can get a shipping quote for myself!
If you’d like to learn more about the Black Bay 925 take a look at my Tudor Tarnish Tales playlist! I take a look at the 925 for what it is beyond the controversy that has surrounded the tarnish. What is it like to live with on a daily basis? How comfortable is it compared to a steel Balck bay 58? How does it wear on different straps? Would I buy the watch if I had a chance to redo everything?
    • Tudor Tarnish Tales
Background for the video: The advantages of silver include a warm and bright white color (especially with the fully brushed case), and additional heft to make the watch feel more special. However, silver’s main disadvantage is the fact that it oxidizes and tarnishes. Tarnishing is still one of the biggest concerns about the 925 and for good reason. Tudor said that it created a brand new alloy to fend off tarnishing, but the results are something only time could provide. However, one month after buying the 925, I got some answers because my 925 did start to tarnish and more reports of tarnishing came up as well. Now we wait and see how the tarnishing will progress.

Thanks for sharing TRI. Your channel has been arguably the best for showing us how your 925 progressed over the time that you have had it. I love the 925 proportions and my black dial version is 'almost' perfect (no watch is perfect). I've currently enough dive watches (I know I've said that many times before) but I've not ruled out adding a 925 to my collection at some point in the future. Great reviews as always TWI. With the UK heatwave I'm still in G-Shock mode. Isn't it odd that some of us can switch between our analogue mechanical marvels to a digital and back and still love them both.

No disrespect intended towards you (I think you're a great guy and continue to enjoy your channel), but this for me is a lesson in how fickle this hobby can be. 12 months ago and I really wanted this watch and was stressed out about "tarnish gate". 12 months on & I had completely forgotten about the existence of this watch 🤣

As an owner, 2 months in and I’m still loving it! Even with its slight oxidation… I think they all tarnish differently depending on region, temp, climate etc. I loved seeing your updates on this watch and surly will miss them. As for that, I’m 2 months in and can’t wait to see how the tarnish looks in 10 months. If interested I’ve already uploaded a few videos on its tarnish journey!

Thanks for the update! As cool as it would have been to see it turn into crazy colors I think it's an overall better message that it hasn't tarnished like crazy, like you said it shows that the silver used is relatively stable. I'm tempted by your offer though! Good price on both watches

I think its added quite a bit of 'extra' character to the watch over the past year and a bit and I say extra because the watch is already unique and beautiful upon its creation.
To my eyes, it now seems to have developed a beautiful personalised look for you and your lifestyle.
It will be a shame to see it go. Excellent video as always 👍

I love this watch and would love to buy it from you soon once I get the money. I think the tarnished silver will look really rugged and worn looking which I love, especially once it's tarnished over several years. If this watch is still available in a couple months I will definitely email you about buying it. This watch has so much character and I love the gray color on the face of the watch

I am sorry to hear you are selling both your BB58s. I thought you had finally gotten your blue to fit well and I was looking forward to more tarnish updates on your 925. As for me, I have owned my B58 (black/gilt) for a year now and I love it more every day. I am wearing it on a rubber tropic strap for the summer, which is better suited for the heat and humidity, and the combination looks amazing. I also bought a Forstner jubilee (great bracelet at a very low price) for it and it looks absolutely incredible on the jubilee. Cheers!

Hi…thank you for sharing your experience with 925. I want to ask you about one specific issue on my 925 if you have or had similar problem…I got it with original braun leather strap and even though I wear it barely once in a week that strap started to disintegrate. To be more specific…once you put the watch on your wrist and lock the strap in the clip you put rest of that hanging strap into strap holder…that small squires leather thing…and this part is falling apart…like splitting into two layers…some textile material on the bottom and extra leather layer over it. I’ve already returned the watch once because of this issue…original dealership…and they repaired it under the warranty…but like six months fast forward same problem appeared. I am wondering am I the only one or am I doing something wrong:)
    Thank you for your insight!

Seeing you as a Tudor fan and selling the Black Bay58s only 8 months later makes me hesitant to get one. Ive always wanted one and it seems to be fit for me I have a smaller wrist the size is right the thickness is to my liking and I really like Tudor as a brand. But theres certain things like the petite nature, very thin bezel hard to grip, faux riveted bracelet and vintagey looks that have kept me from pulling the trigger. Seeing more people seĺl these off I think I might look elsewhere for my first luxury diver.

You can easily clean silver with:
1 soup spoon of baking soda
    1 soup spoon of salt
    125ml approx white vinegar
    Warm water
    Aluminium foil
Put the foil on the botton of a small recipient, then add the salt, the baking soda, the vinagre and the warm water. Put your silver watch / silver jewels inside. Enjoy the Magic! 😃

Yeah cleaning up tarnished silver especially when it's light is quite easy and it ends up pretty spotless which is cool. I just don’t understand these watches that, let’s call a spade a spade - RUST. If a stainless steel watch showed signs of ‘tarnishing’ (which is rust…) it would be completely unacceptable. Equally, if a car began to ‘tarnish’ it would be a disaster! Silver and bronze are not suitable materials for a watch. Simple.
